I’m am sure young drummers are watching this thinking “what’s the big deal? Anyone can do that.” But it’s not true, his time, feel and restraint make the groove that JR plays incredibly challenging to copy. Like the late, great Jeff Porcaro, John has the magnificent ability to find just what the song requires and play it flawlessly. There are so many personal stories I have heard that support my observation. As mentioned in other comment, it’s the reason he’s one of the most recorded drummers in history. Listen to Quincy Jones’ “The Dude” if you want a master class in how to play for the music. Kudos JR for another masterful performance.
Such a legend! His drum clinics would be one of the more interesting ones to attend because he's played on so much famous music over 40+ years. You wouldn't necessarily have to be a drummer to enjoy it.
Yeah, he's definitely playing a few parts here. On the recording you can hear the hi-hat is constant and all those lovely tom fills, particularly in the bridge, are layered on top.
I wish the audio wasn't using the on-camera mic. Getting a feed from the mixer would have given some decent kick volume to help drive this groove. It seriously needs it.
I see a lot of drummer these days hitting so hard and a million fills (church drummers mainly) no dynamics, drums either choked or as flabby as flat tyre!!!! Then you have JR Robinson...👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Yeah but he got these gigs for not just right time right place. He proved he could deliver every time, to be not to egotistical, to be completely professional, to do the right amount not to show off etc, people obviously wanted to work with him. Facts are, he made or found a niche and owned it, and recorded 100s of albums. Maybe Vinnie was too busy to take it!
