Dude. Wow. This is really well done. Scott Stokely and yourself both put together some truly appreciated content in response to that other channel. You went above and beyond in describing the fundamentals of what went wrong with his grip.

This video, made me realize I've been throwing exclusively with a backloaded grip, wondering why I can't get a disc to flip reliably. I didn't even understand what you were talking about so I grabbed a disc, and as soon as i gripped it I understood and it makes a ton of sense. Valuable info, subscribed.

Bravo! I have never thought about grip being front loaded vs back loaded and I'm a 999 rated player of 13 years. But, I have been stumbling upon this discovery recently as well. Noticing that there's a difference in grip in a tunnel control shot (back/mid grip) vs a distance shot (front). This has been very eye opening! I'm excited to work on this. Thanks!!!!

This is also to say, it's taken me 13 years to try tweaking this. This information could be gold to some young new players in the early developmental stages. Bc I feel that when you find a grip (4 finger mid/back loaded power grip for me).. then a player tends to not change it, but everything else they focus on. But, I was curious after tweaking form. Why does it feel internally like I'm not generating the "juice" at the end of the whip? I thought.. maybe my 4 fingers are slowing the rotation of the disc micro-seconds before release.. I think there's validity in that. Then you mentioned: focus on being "front loaded" for power, I'd agree.

Thank you for this. I tried the pinch modified fan grip they were talking about Saturday on a pretty open course. I immediately felt like I had no idea where anything was going, as I suddenly was not getting clean releases, and I was not gaining any distance, either. I played around with my grip during the round a bit, and the one drive I felt good about was on the last hole with my regular grip.
My regular grip now, thanks to this video for the words to articulate it correctly, is a front-loaded power grip. I spent a lot of time at the beginning of this season trying to improve, and grip was a big thing I worked on. My previous grip was super comfy and super controllable: It was a back-loaded 3-finger power grip with my pointer finger just resting over the rim. When I switched and got comfortable with getting that pointer finger in on it and putting pressure through with it, I did gain pretty immediate distance (and I eventually got back the amount of control I had previously had).
I'd wager real money you were dead-on: He was using a back-loaded comfy version of a power grip, and front-loading is what made the difference.

Thank you for sorting that out.
I thought these IB videos “The Power Grip is Fake” were click bait.
    His reasoning was half baked.
I long ago came to this realize that a fan type grip gave more control and a power grip gave more distance. But if you throw it for a long time you can have control with your power grip. I can even putt with it.

It’s like tiger woods said “swing as hard as you can, now swing at %70 to stay in balance and hit more fairways ” these pros throw so much farther than us they don’t throw at %100 all the time which is why they don’t always need max spin or speed. That’s why we see pro using fan grip sometimes to throw 400ft because if they go full power they throw over 500ft. The grip explanation of front loaded vs back loaded makes so much sense that something I want to work on.
Keep up the good work!! Love the videos!!

Hey guys....so I watched the other video and played a round yesterday with the goal of using the "front loaded" grip for the entire round. Just some quick background. I've been playing for 1.5 yrs and throw 300 ft max.
The course I played has both wooded and field holes. I have to say you hit it right on the nose. After about the first 6 holes I noticed myself naturally moving toward my more traditional "mid loaded" grip for gaps I needed to hit. But in those field I was able to sneak out an additional 50 ft of distance with the front loaded grip.
When I watched your video it made total sense why I was making the change and could not agree more on your explanation.
Keep up the great work and as always keep slinging em' with different grips!!

I’ve struggled to throw 300’. The concept of the disk pivoting around a pinch point as part of the throw was a revelation. As soon as I let this happen by using a two finger and thumb pinch grip I was getting 300’ with very little effort. My accuracy degraded but wow. So now I have to figure out a grip that gives me better accuracy and consistency with a clean pivot action.

We are big fans of all of these form and instructional videos. Filming so many pros we have noticed that quite a few of them will use modified fan grips for a large percentage of their shots. Mainly because they have such huge distance, they are more worried about control and accuracy. We did a mic'd up round with Ricky Wysocki and he said that he throws EVERY shot with a modified fan grip. He also has huge hands so that may also be a comfort thing. Keep it up guys. I saw that dudes first video and started thinking that I had missed something so I modified my grip over the course of playing all weekend. To be frank I couldn’t throw it full force with that grip as it kept flying out way too early. So I decided that the dude was probably misunderstanding what was happening. Basically, I figured out that the most important thing about that grip was the pinch up front. It did indeed help me turn over discs easier but now that I’ve seen this video I realize that I had only figured out half the puzzle at best. Thanks for clarifying. Btw the only reason I gave the dude the time of day was because he was referencing this channel. So it was good to see a reply.

I have been experimenting with that for a longer time. I think a two (three) finger pinch can help a lot to concentrate on the release point and what is actually happening. Maybe you learn for the first time that you don't throw the disc but you let it pivot ouf the hand.
Also the front and backloaded grip can have a huge impact on spin and noseangle. So i recommend a lot doing a lot of changes and try out what feels good or weird, what gives more distance or later fade (=more spin)

Well I'd like to thank both you and Iceberg TV. Even if he didn't fully grasp the various grips 😁 he led me to your channel, and your grip videos had an immediate impact on my game. I've been playing on and off, for about three years. Not counting wind aided flukes, my max distance was about 200 feet, with 170-180 being common. And then I watched his video and a bunch of yours, and headed to play my fave local course yesterday (Mountain Crest in Las Vegas). The result of my first day with a new grip? I overthrew multiple baskets that I've never reached before. I was hitting 230 regularly, and had more than a few over 250. My bag is generally understable and I was turning stuff over on most drives; what a GREAT problem for me to have! I've played this course a hundred times, and I'll bet I had my "best drive ever" on more than ten of the holes. I cannot thank you enough!!! And Iceberg deserves some credit, because he brought your teaching to my attention.

Interesting video and take on front-loading vs back-loading for accuracy and ease of release point.
Conversely, Uli's take on it is that you should front-load the grip for accuracy since it provides more spin and thus less wobble to your touchy shots.
I guess it's a trade-off of hitting your line versus "maintaining" your line.

Please do a video on the deep flight plate thumb. How is it not better to use that thumb forward to better pinch the front pivot? I've seen shots where it seems like half their palm is on top of the disc and they throw it 600ft. How is that possible? The disc just gets awkwardly torqued and crushed if I try anything that looks remotely similar since the fingers and thumb/palm don't align.

Great video. Another important factor to take into account is the hand size of the athlete. A lot of these players are very tall and have huge hands so their fan grip or modified grip covers a lot more ground on the disc. I started out with a power grip but had issues with control and it felt like my pinky was forcing the disc to go right. I then switched over to a fan grip and got better distance and a little bit more control, but still wasn’t quite right. I now use a three finger power grip for my distance shots and it has greatly improved not only my distance but also my accuracy. I now use a modified fan grip for up shots and shorter distances. So again, keep in mind that hand size also has a lot to do with the group that should be used in every player will be different.

I am a beginner, and am struggling to get any distance consistently. Only manage about 200 feet on a good day.
I am not getting good spin on the discs, meaning they will not work properly for me. Am suspecting lack of spin for this.
After watching this video, I am beginning to perhaps see my problem. I am using a power grip - but I am gripping very hard with all fingers. This I then guess leaves me without any real pivot.
Hopefully it is now the big eureka moment when having you explain this grip. I need to front load! I need to loosen the rear fingers!
Ohh! I need to go out and test this!
    Thank you!

Great stuff, as always … THANKS!! I’m just coming back from a shoulder injury, so I’m hoping this grip information might help me get some distance back without throwing as hard as before.

Great video. I tried the modified fan grip yesterday in a few rounds because I'd tend to midload my power grip. Through front loading the shots got quite some additional power but the fan grip for me tends to create a lot of wobble because my middle finger caught the the rim in a weird way. That was extremely frustrating so I'm gonna go back to the power grip and experiment a bit with the loading. Thanks for clearing that up, otherwise I probably would have spend a lot of time trying to make the front loaded fan grip work for my.

It is quite simple. Find what works best for you: power grip, fan grip, or over the hip potato chip grip! I don’t really care. Technique is very important but everyone is different. Great video as always. Thanks providing actionable information to improve my game.

I started playing this past spring. I learned a lot from your videos. After four months, I've hit a wall in the distance around 390’s. And I realized I was mid or backloading without thinking. I will have to try a front-load fan grip 🤔

I would recommend our most recent grip video on the channel for a complete look at grip. The advent of TechDisc has brought new light to this subject. The video is called “how to grip the backhand”

If you want more spin on the power grip leave the pinki off you see Drew do it in the video here there’s 30-50 feet more than 4 fingers imho

All this time my grip was back loaded, so the pinch grip felt good but awkward at the same time. Thanks for clarifying.

i get more snap with the pinch grip. ive done both for a while now, my issue is nose angle. I feel that pinch grip helps my nose angle exponentially compared to the power

Very nice, I've been using Drew's fan grip for a long time now, and I'll use it until I have enough arm speed to even the "max distance"

So how should the fingers be loaded on a max distance power grip? Front loaded? How much pressure should the mid and rear fingers apply? Or do we just squeeze with all fingers equally for max distance?

    • @OverthrowDiscGolf
      @OverthrowDiscGolf  2 роки тому

Front. I’d stay loose but the finger holding the disc in your hand should be your index

I’ve always felt like using a fan grip loses distance for me and power grip I can get way more spin on the disc but for controlled shots I use more of a fan grip

6:48 are you sure that's a mid-loaded grip, and he's not just hooking his pointer and pinky fingers? Aren't the middle two fingers just not involved?

I backloaded it because front loading kept my nose up. I had to put more force to keep my wrist pointed down to the point it was uncomfortable. The pinch grip lets me front load it with the noise down easier than a power grip. Just find what feels comfortable and nose down. For some that’s powergrip for others it’s pinch or modified fan grip
