    Aww sorry that your tortoise is aggressive!! Thankfully I got lucky with my baby, and she LOVES to snuggle. The only time she tried to bite me is when she's hungry, because for some reason she's convinced my fingers are food😂

      mine isn't, but try to get yours when it is young so you can create a bond with it from early on. The only time when mine bites me is when it thinks that my finger is a carrot, overall, Russian tortoises are great pets, but make sure to take care of him/her properly!!!

      I can only speak from my experience, Ive had a gopher tortoise and now have a russian and theyve never been anything but docile. The gopher was a bit timid and would hide in his shell if you got near but my russian is fine with handling or anything else and both love/ loved getting taken out of the tank to let explore my livingroom or yard for a while

    hello! my baby tortoise is about a year old and I’ve had him for 9 months, and I’m just wondering, when do you see them grow? like is it a very subtle thing that happens over time? he’s stayed about the same size as your tortoise in this video and I’m worried that he’s maybe not receiving the nutrients he needs :(

    is romaine lettuce ok to feed a russian tortoise?

    • @RussianTorts
      @RussianTorts  7 років тому

      Yes but not as the only food. You want to make sure that their diet is as close to natural as possible.

    • @saltysteven3639
      @saltysteven3639 7 років тому

      RussianTorts okay what kind of greens should i feed them?

    • @MyStolenEyes
      @MyStolenEyes 6 років тому

      Lettuce is a good thing to add to their diet for hydration purposes, but don't think of it as a food source, more of an easy help to hydrate a tortoise if they are showing signs of dehydration or are recovering from something that limits their ability to access their water dish.

    which is better. big tank or little tank. my torties is 2 times the size of yours i am 9 years old and live in a shack but found thesentorties redfoot

    • @RussianTorts
      @RussianTorts  7 років тому +1

      Release the tortoise back into the wild or build it a cage outside that is very large. It is highly unlikely that you would be able to properly take care of an adult redfoot tortoise inside of a shack

    • @kathryncastanares525
      @kathryncastanares525 7 років тому

      please please pleeease put that poor thing back. if you have to ask if a tort of that size can be in a tank inside a shack, you shouldn't be caring for it. this is a life, not a toy. and a wild one at that. please let her go back to her natural home environment. and after you have done more research on how to proper care for a tortoise, and are actually able to provide the right set up and daily care, than go buy one from a breeder or adopt.. wild tortoises should really be left in the wild where they belong. many species are becoming more and more endangered because of pet and food trade etc. please do the right thing.

    • @MyStolenEyes
      @MyStolenEyes 6 років тому +1

      EASYGAMER262 Roblox boy If it is considered an invasive species it's probably best to contact the local wildlife authority rather than release it back.

    My tortoise just won’t eat, if been to the professionals twice but still no change. He has a heat/uvb combo with 35 °C for 12 hours. Apply water and spray some everyday very early before the lights go on. Tried various foods, but nothing. Tips? He recently got a vitamin B shot, but nothing changed. Handfeeding him seems to have no effect anymore either. My little man “Kappa” won’t eat.

    what size should I keep a russian tort in?

    • @RussianTorts
      @RussianTorts  8 років тому

      As big as you can possibly go. Potilla's cage is 4x4 feet and that is too small for her. Ideally you would make her cage 8x4 feet

    • @Mark-xd3lg
      @Mark-xd3lg 8 років тому

      RussianTorts would a 8×4 cage/enclosure be suitable for his whole life

    • @Mark-xd3lg
      @Mark-xd3lg 8 років тому

      RussianTorts and where can I buy a tortoise in Canada that ships online.

    • @RussianTorts
      @RussianTorts  8 років тому

      yes 8x4 feet is a good size for their whole lifespan. If you are getting a baby I would put it in a smaller enclosure first (smth like 4x2 feet) as it is easier to maintain the proper humidity in a smaller enclosure. Baby tortoises need a relatively high humidity so that their shell develops normally. I don't know if there is anyone who sells tortoises online in Canada, you would need to search that up yourself

      Try not to feed it too much fruit! Maybe as a treat from time to time but don't base it's entire diet off fruit and lettuce, there's not too much nutritional value in either.

    • @juliosfather4994
      @juliosfather4994 6 років тому

      I wouldn’t feed it strawberries. It has a level of acid and it can hurt the animal, the only fruits it should eat is watermelon but only once in a while, never regularly

  • @bradz1037
    @bradz1037 7 років тому

    One suggestion. You should remove the water bowl from the Russian Tortoise enclosure. They poop/pee in the water and drink it which gives them high levels of toxic bacteria. They get plenty of water from their food and soaking every few days. If you do this will will notice that your tortoise will become significantly more active within about a week. Otherwise you seems to be doing a great job!

    • @RussianTorts
      @RussianTorts  7 років тому +2

      I do not agree with that suggestion. When I see potilla defecate in the water bowl I clean it immediately. You want to make sure you provide your tortoise with access to water. I agree, they get plenty of water from food and soaking. However, I want to give her the opportunity to drink whenever she wants. I personally believe that this is beneficial to their health. Her activity levels have nothing to do with her water bowl. She has not defecated in their for a while, neither has she drank any water in a while. It is just winter outside and she can sense that as we had a cold snap recently

    • @kathryncastanares525
      @kathryncastanares525 7 років тому +1

      Although it is unsanitary to have feces in the drinking water, you most definitely need to have water available at all times for your tort actually.. normally responsible pet owners clean their water and food dishes to prevent any drinking of contaminated water. it is usually pet store employees telling you that they dont need water etc to make the tort seem lower maintenance in my own experience anyway. thats the only time i have ever heard or read about it other than this comment.

      no it is not tortoise prison if they are raised in captivity it is fine they don't need to be out side but it is great to let them go outside and kale is good for the tortoise shell it is good to let them have fruits and veggies whole because it's good for her beak I have a Russian tortoise and he is very healthy and don't keep the lights on that long they do need to have darkness cause in the wild they would not have lights on them, but I really do enjoy these vid they are very helpful 👍
