Aww sorry that your tortoise is aggressive!! Thankfully I got lucky with my baby, and she LOVES to snuggle. The only time she tried to bite me is when she's hungry, because for some reason she's convinced my fingers are food😂
mine isn't, but try to get yours when it is young so you can create a bond with it from early on. The only time when mine bites me is when it thinks that my finger is a carrot, overall, Russian tortoises are great pets, but make sure to take care of him/her properly!!!
I can only speak from my experience, Ive had a gopher tortoise and now have a russian and theyve never been anything but docile. The gopher was a bit timid and would hide in his shell if you got near but my russian is fine with handling or anything else and both love/ loved getting taken out of the tank to let explore my livingroom or yard for a while
Cody Tanksley like humans, torts have different personalities. Make sure you get to play with one before you take it home! My Russian is very friendly and patient, even with children.
hello! my baby tortoise is about a year old and I’ve had him for 9 months, and I’m just wondering, when do you see them grow? like is it a very subtle thing that happens over time? he’s stayed about the same size as your tortoise in this video and I’m worried that he’s maybe not receiving the nutrients he needs :(
Lettuce is a good thing to add to their diet for hydration purposes, but don't think of it as a food source, more of an easy help to hydrate a tortoise if they are showing signs of dehydration or are recovering from something that limits their ability to access their water dish.
Release the tortoise back into the wild or build it a cage outside that is very large. It is highly unlikely that you would be able to properly take care of an adult redfoot tortoise inside of a shack
please please pleeease put that poor thing back. if you have to ask if a tort of that size can be in a tank inside a shack, you shouldn't be caring for it. this is a life, not a toy. and a wild one at that. please let her go back to her natural home environment. and after you have done more research on how to proper care for a tortoise, and are actually able to provide the right set up and daily care, than go buy one from a breeder or adopt.. wild tortoises should really be left in the wild where they belong. many species are becoming more and more endangered because of pet and food trade etc. please do the right thing.
EASYGAMER262 Roblox boy If it is considered an invasive species it's probably best to contact the local wildlife authority rather than release it back.
Do you still give her worms, snails etc? I just got a box turtle and I'm trying to figure the diet out 😂 what calcium powder do you use? Where do you get it?
russian torts do not eat protien but box turtles do, feed your turtle worms and veggies. i got my calcium from amazon but get one without d3, you can maybe also find some at a petstore.
I got my calcium powder at a pet store, I cannot remember if it was feeders supply, Petco, or petsmart. If you need look up ‘box turtle food list’ and there you should find information for it.
Not every russian but they can get really territorial. If they have enough space to roam around there shouldnt be any problems. Even then, every animal has its personality
Dap Donut They have personalities. I have 2 myself and one of them is really friendly and likes being with people. The other one is pretty friendly too but a lot more shy.
Dap Donut not at all! I have a male and female pair and they are the sweetest. They need to be loved and taken out of their enclosure regularly so they can learn you aren't a threat, then they will become your best friends. Mine even like my dogs!
Ambercaye Late reply, sorry. My tort is friendly. Its a personality thing. But I just make sure my tort sees that the hand feeds him, and brings water. I've had him for a year, and he lets me touch his face now.
aww :") my tort is chill with kinda whatever im doing, hes chill with anything, but im sure if youll have your tort so long - almost 10 years- it will be so friendly too!
When I got my russian tortoise he was very friendly already, it really depends on their personality. I would play with one before you get one so you understand their different personalities.
My tortoise just won’t eat, if been to the professionals twice but still no change. He has a heat/uvb combo with 35 °C for 12 hours. Apply water and spray some everyday very early before the lights go on. Tried various foods, but nothing. Tips? He recently got a vitamin B shot, but nothing changed. Handfeeding him seems to have no effect anymore either. My little man “Kappa” won’t eat.
Where is everyone getting their Russian's? I now have a male and a female, and they have never even tried to bite at me. Mine are really friendly with me and each other. I just can't believe mine are the same species as these pint size biting terrors I see on youtube lol.
yes 8x4 feet is a good size for their whole lifespan. If you are getting a baby I would put it in a smaller enclosure first (smth like 4x2 feet) as it is easier to maintain the proper humidity in a smaller enclosure. Baby tortoises need a relatively high humidity so that their shell develops normally. I don't know if there is anyone who sells tortoises online in Canada, you would need to search that up yourself
Try not to feed it too much fruit! Maybe as a treat from time to time but don't base it's entire diet off fruit and lettuce, there's not too much nutritional value in either.
I wouldn’t feed it strawberries. It has a level of acid and it can hurt the animal, the only fruits it should eat is watermelon but only once in a while, never regularly
One suggestion. You should remove the water bowl from the Russian Tortoise enclosure. They poop/pee in the water and drink it which gives them high levels of toxic bacteria. They get plenty of water from their food and soaking every few days. If you do this will will notice that your tortoise will become significantly more active within about a week. Otherwise you seems to be doing a great job!
I do not agree with that suggestion. When I see potilla defecate in the water bowl I clean it immediately. You want to make sure you provide your tortoise with access to water. I agree, they get plenty of water from food and soaking. However, I want to give her the opportunity to drink whenever she wants. I personally believe that this is beneficial to their health. Her activity levels have nothing to do with her water bowl. She has not defecated in their for a while, neither has she drank any water in a while. It is just winter outside and she can sense that as we had a cold snap recently
Although it is unsanitary to have feces in the drinking water, you most definitely need to have water available at all times for your tort actually.. normally responsible pet owners clean their water and food dishes to prevent any drinking of contaminated water. it is usually pet store employees telling you that they dont need water etc to make the tort seem lower maintenance in my own experience anyway. thats the only time i have ever heard or read about it other than this comment.
LIGHTS!!!,.....echh,....terrible.,....."OUTDOORS".,.....Collard greens (no Kale).NO,NO,NO water conditioner!!!,.....whatta' you??,....."NUTS"?????.Distilled water from the grocery store.,.....Get them (it) out side.,.....Tortoise "PRISON".
no it is not tortoise prison if they are raised in captivity it is fine they don't need to be out side but it is great to let them go outside and kale is good for the tortoise shell it is good to let them have fruits and veggies whole because it's good for her beak I have a Russian tortoise and he is very healthy and don't keep the lights on that long they do need to have darkness cause in the wild they would not have lights on them, but I really do enjoy these vid they are very helpful 👍
i have a russian tortoise and he is so sweet. best bday gift ever. i have had him for almost 2 years.
thanks for helping me learn how to care for mine
Their so sweet if you give them love And attention they almost act like a dog with a shell.

Rock 'n' roll man keep up the good work.
Nice. How often does she eat kale? I never tried kale before for mine so Im curious. Shes so fierce and adorable! Her nickname should be Ms.Pacman ^_^
I’m looking to get a Russian tortoise. Are they normally that aggressive?
mine isn't, but try to get yours when it is young so you can create a bond with it from early on. The only time when mine bites me is when it thinks that my finger is a carrot, overall, Russian tortoises are great pets, but make sure to take care of him/her properly!!!

Do you if there's a herb mix like that available in the US? Thanks for another awesome video!
I've had no luck finding it in Canada or the states. I always have to smuggle it into the country :p
@@RussianTorts why smuggle?
What is the herb mixture?
Where did u buy the timer for the light???
Can i also use eco earth aka coco fiber
Yes for sure
yes it actually is a favorite choice for a russian tortoise
I have one of those
why is patilla so angry? are all tortoises angry?
definitely not. Potilla is just mean. When I had Noel, my box turtle, she was the sweetest thing ever.
Cody Tanksley like humans, torts have different personalities. Make sure you get to play with one before you take it home! My Russian is very friendly and patient, even with children.
RussianTorts My tortoise is lazy help me get him to be active
Aww. Why is all this so darn cute lol
When you total change the substrate?
hello! my baby tortoise is about a year old and I’ve had him for 9 months, and I’m just wondering, when do you see them grow? like is it a very subtle thing that happens over time? he’s stayed about the same size as your tortoise in this video and I’m worried that he’s maybe not receiving the nutrients he needs :(
is romaine lettuce ok to feed a russian tortoise?
Yes but not as the only food. You want to make sure that their diet is as close to natural as possible.
RussianTorts okay what kind of greens should i feed them?
Lettuce is a good thing to add to their diet for hydration purposes, but don't think of it as a food source, more of an easy help to hydrate a tortoise if they are showing signs of dehydration or are recovering from something that limits their ability to access their water dish.
yes but with weeds
which is better. big tank or little tank. my torties is 2 times the size of yours i am 9 years old and live in a shack but found thesentorties redfoot

but really put it back
Which green vegetables u give your tortoise pls inform me
They eat weeds grass flowers leaves etc just make sure to research before
Do you still give her worms, snails etc? I just got a box turtle and I'm trying to figure the diet out 😂 what calcium powder do you use? Where do you get it?
Cg May no these Russian Tort are herbivores :)

Do you feed her that amount of food everyday?
Is every Russian tortoise angry and protective like potilla?
Not every russian but they can get really territorial. If they have enough space to roam around there shouldnt be any problems. Even then, every animal has its personality
Mine is really friendly, she will walk up to me and greet me in the morning
Dap Donut They have personalities. I have 2 myself and one of them is really friendly and likes being with people. The other one is pretty friendly too but a lot more shy.

How do you get your Russian tortoise comfortable around you?
I couldn't tell you. Mine hates me and chases me through the cage whenever I try to clean it :p
thats kinda cute XD mine does that only when he wants to singnal me hes hungry (and his in house not outside)
Ambercaye Late reply, sorry. My tort is friendly. Its a personality thing. But I just make sure my tort sees that the hand feeds him, and brings water. I've had him for a year, and he lets me touch his face now.

Can hermann tortoises eat kale
Yes
Hi how many inches is the russian
does she eat the spider plants??
Yes, she nibbles at them occasionally
is she ok if she does that
Yes they are completely safe for tortoises
what size should I keep a russian tort in?
As big as you can possibly go. Potilla's cage is 4x4 feet and that is too small for her. Ideally you would make her cage 8x4 feet
RussianTorts would a 8×4 cage/enclosure be suitable for his whole life
RussianTorts and where can I buy a tortoise in Canada that ships online.
yes 8x4 feet is a good size for their whole lifespan.
