    It is very important to soak your Russian Tortoise once a week so that it can clean its system. It's also very important for the health of the tortoises skin and shell. Thank you for watching, feel free to leave a comment and ask me any question.

    Holding your tortoise on the opened palm gives a much more solid platform to rest her plastron onto rather then dangling with a few fingers. Just a stress related thing. I have no discomfort with my Gilda as I have had her for 10 years now. You are right about it being hard to breathe on their back, that is stressful. It is good to take a paper towel or towel on your palm, then place your little friend on the towel therefore less stress of lying it on it's back at all.

    You're right, I actually stopped soaking my tortoise in that tub as I saw the oily film on the water. Completely forgot about mentioning that once I stopped. Thanks for pointing that out as it is indeed very harmful

    I didn't want to come over as saying that you were inexperienced by saying that if you were not comfortable with handling your tortoise. That you was more like the you for the people in general. I like your advice, but the problem while making a video is that I only have one free hand so this is the safest way to hold the tortoise in the video. Otherwise I will try to adopt your way of holding the tortoise. Thank you for being respectful and not ignorant like some other fools

  • @RussianTorts

    Tortoises are generally not animals that like to "play" They are not what people consider social animals. So to reduce the stress I try to not move my tortoise around too much.

    This is normal, your tortoise is just scared of you. Once it gets to now you better this will stop. To help, approach your tortoise slowly and make sure it sees you approaching it. When you pick it up don't pick it up from behind but instead make sure it can see your hand

    Your diet sounds fine to me. Just add a source of calcium (powder, or cuttlebone) and you got your basic diet. If your worried about fiber you can also try giving your tortoise some timothy hay.

  • @RussianTorts
    @RussianTorts  11 років тому

    Alright, well as long as she got a big and awesome inside enclosure you are safe

  • @RussianTorts
    @RussianTorts  11 років тому

    Well nothing really, as long as you got your tank set up properly (which I'm assuming you have) it doesn't matter how your brothers room is. Just make sure you got somewhere close by to place the misting bottle, poop bucket, calcium powder, hay, and all the other supplies you might have. I got a big cupboard under my tortoises tank for that reason.

    I just use a big tupperware tub, drop them in it, go to the sink and fill it. Eliminates any carrier or dirtying things up. Also I can put them in the sink while I get fresh water after they poop then back in they go. I refuse to let them soak with floaters and tear them up, no one wants to soak in shredded turd water. My female set a record yesterday...SEVEN times.

    • @hayypoopie

      it is a sink regularly used for cleaning clothes, he said. he most likely cleans the sink after he uses it so that not only the people using it after don't get gross turtle poop on the, but so that the turtle isn't bathing in a dirty sink.

    Just put a large enough, shallow water bowl in their indoor and outdoor pens and there's no need to soak your Russian. I've had my Russian group for 12+ years and never soaked them because they find the water bowl and drink from it 2-3 times a week.

  • @gabbymarie9713
    @gabbymarie9713 8 років тому +2

    I've had my Russian since late December. I'm wanting to soak him but I've heard from numerous people that they always need to have purified water, no matter the case. So if I just fill up my sink with tap water, that would be fine? or do I need to put drops in after I have it filled?

    • @RussianTorts
      @RussianTorts  8 років тому +1

      Depending on where you live tap water is fine. However, if you want to play it safe, it is always a good idea to dechlorinate the water. Zoomed makes a product called "ReptiSafe" but you can also use any other fish water conditioner. I have done both and my tortoise has been fine

  • @RussianTorts
    @RussianTorts  11 років тому

    Her legs would still dangle if I do that since she is bigger than my hand. I usually don't hold her long anyways, just for the videos to show people what she looks like. You're right about the drying but my tortoise normally goes into hiding after a bath so she wont dry of in her hut. She doesn't look stressed to me when I dry her, she is pretty used to me.But I agree if you are not really comfortable handling your tortoise just toss her back in the cage to let her dry
