    Amazing to see these drawer queens still radiating their pride, glory and story through the years! ✨️
    And, even after a whole 3 years, the track still looks fresh!
    If you ever decide to take it apart to make a new layout again, count me in! 📬

    Wow that’s noisy , but why not . So many people in model railways get caught up on detail that they forget to have fun ! Love these models . The 103 is a particular favourite , but the 120 looks good too . The 103 was iconic as I grew up in the 60s and 70s , first seeing it in a Minitrix catalogue . Although I am s UK modeller I do fancy having a small fleet of German and Swiss prototypes . I will be going down the Fleischmann route I’m afraid as they are 2 rail , like my UK stock . I love this channel and I am learning much about German trains from it .

      You can have a look at hamo too, they come up frequently on Ebay UK at reasonable prices.

      @@The3rdRail thanks for reply . I’m now hooked on your channel . I hadn’t thought of Hamo but will have a look . Are couplings all interchangeable between Fleischmann/Hamo/ Roco . Did locos have NEM pockets back in 70/80s ? . Now watching your Swiss Ae6/6 video !

    • @The3rdRail
      @The3rdRail  3 місяці тому +1

      @@russellbenton2987The answer is: it depends... NEM started to appear in the 1980s, but a lot of manufacturers used loop couplings before that. I know fleischmann had a system of interchangeable couplings, I think roco started with loops to then introduce their own stuff and NEW. Basically it is a zoo, but you should be used to that in the 2 rail DC world 😉

    Love the quirky micheline autorail … and nice sound in the end! a well known german cartoon charatcter once said: »der lärm ist mir noch zu leise!«😄.

      The microphone in my camera doesn't do the "Lärm" any justice, it is too whitenoisy in the video, but not too far... Thanks for the visit!

    Lol - I was on my local dog friendly beach this morning (at 0530) and it was 2degrees (cent) in the wind - not warm! Having said that, I wish I had your challenges when it comes to running stock - and I bet I'm not alone!!!

    The last moments of the video are a real symphony ! You mentioned the sensitive paint of the 3054.....I've seen many that have lost their paint and even repainted a used one. I'm happy to see the comment below explaining it.

    Wonderful seeing the more odd ones out as well, such as the Michelin rail bus. Tbh, you have just turned up the flame for us for future acquisitions since that one wasn't in our field of awareness. Most intriguing that M actually have produced the model. The 103 is of course one of Ms and DBs classic. Still such a magnificent loco, especially in the original TEE livery with all metal coaches in case of M. Thank you for sharing 💓

    I know what you mean about 3054s having fragile paintwork. For unknown reasons marklin decided to mould the body from a plastic called delrin, usually used to make bearings. The thing about delrin which makes it good for bearings is that nothing sticks to it, including paint. This is why it tends to fall off in large flakes.

      Thanks for the explanation.

    • @The3rdRail
      @The3rdRail  4 місяці тому

      This is a very interesting explanation, which I am hearing for the first time. I am struggling with it to be honest. It doesn't sound like Märklin to use a material classed as non-paintable (and more expensive than the stuff they were using for other models concurrently) for the wrong purpose, to then carry on doing it for 10 years on 6 versions of the same model... But I wasn't at the factory at the time... I'd love to find out more though, would you be able to point us to the source of this anecdote? But thanks for sharing and your visit today.

    • @johnbuttery1171
      @johnbuttery1171 4 місяці тому

      From what I can tell 3053 and 3054 were one of the first attempts to make a plastic body rather than cast alloy. At the time delrin was newly available and being used for many applications as it hard wearing and has good dimensional stability. The problem with paint detaching would not have shown up for a few years. I think they switched to something else by the time of 3357 at least so they realised their mistake.

    • @mountainmanpedro

      @The3rdRail and @johnbuttery1171 I have a later airport express set that I purchased used with this paint failure (the cars were fine)....I'm going to inspect it and see what I see. I'm really curious about this.

    • @The3rdRail
      @The3rdRail  4 місяці тому +1

      We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. There were already quite a few models made of plastic and painted back then: 3001 (1953), 3016 (1955), 3064 (1963), 3070 - TEE Ram (1965), 3072 (1966), so it is not as if they didn't know how to handle plastic when the time came to release the 3053 in 1966. The 3054 came out in 1971. I was given a brand new 3054 in 1981, and after 2 weeks it was already showing paint problems,
      II think this might have more to do with the formulation of the paint for certain colors: for example, silver on roofs (ie Railbus - 3016 or V60 - 3065), pinstripes or running numbers also flakes off very easily, whether the model is made of metal or plastic. Or it could be that they could not get the right shade of beige using primers, so simply applied the colors to the plastic...
      Anyway, it is hardly a life or death matter... 😀

    Such a terribly short postwar life for the elegant Bavarian S 3/6. No idea what the Belgians had in mind there! By the same token a shame for the princess model to meet a similar fate.
    The Belgians had also gotten their hot little hands on many 3-axle Prussian compartment coaches as reparations your research has shown. You'll find as I that until acquisition of a few #4135 older tin-plate 330/2 match quite well with the size and period styling of the fictional 5920 locomotive

      I wouldn't look furtherfor a reason than standardisation, after a few years, the vast majority of what was left was of KPEV origin and available by the tens if not hundreds of units.

    The Michelin was interesting. There has been a digital version available on Fleaby recently, I did consider it, but I only tend to buy German Prototypes. I think I bought a Wismar railcar instead. The Belgian liveried BR 18 used to be available in The Primex range, in a set with Wagon Lit coaches ( Orient Express train I think) Primex 2701

      Thanks, Michelines are a nice collection theme, there were quite a few versions in EST, SNCB, FS etc liveries. The 2701 loco is a brown P8 (=3098 tooling) I think, nice too, who doesn't like a P8? 😀 Thanks for the visit! Have a good weekend.
