So you guys missed the All In One shot which explains everything. I don't wanna spoil anything but Absolute comics is basically their Ultimate Universe. They're all ongoing and they're adding Absolute Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Martian Manhunter and the New Gods (which may or may not exist in the Absolute Universe). They've got some incredible creative teams doing the books which has me excited about DC for the first time in years.
Hey guys, I actually am enjoying this episode more than most although I do like them all I was at my LCS about a month ago digging in their dollar box and right there in the middle was issue of the 1962 space family Robinson. I could not believe it was in the box when I pointed it out. He looked at it and said our mistake you found it. You keep it. It’s such a pleasure to shop in a place that is so honest and you can still find some gems in a dollar bin. Not too many shops like this around anymore.
So often, the one comic I needed to complete a run is a nothing issue, one in which nothing of note occurs, it isn't low print run, the cover is by the title's regular artist as opposed to an artist whose work everyone wants. Conan The Barbarian #61 is such a comic for me, it took me years to find it in the wild. Thankyou Richard for nominating Sandman Mystery Theatre, a fantastic title that's easy to collect in its entirety because no-one wants it or has heard of it, so you can find back-issues all over the place for next to nothing. And I'm pleased John that you're enjoying Starman, another excellent title which too few comics fans appreciate.
John, don’t forgot, along with the celebrity comics you cited, DC also bestowed titular comics upon Jackie Gleason and Ozzie & Harriet. Richard, DC recently published a miniseries about the Golden Age Wesley Dodds Sandman, written by underrated writer Robert Venditti (who did a nice run on Hawkman a few years back). So yes, he is still occasionally in the spotlight.
Missed the live, caught the rewind shortly after! Great job as always, guys! Also, for those early alt music fans, 1983 also had Hootenany from the Replacements! Worth it for "Color Me Impressed" alone!!
I love Sandman Mystery Theatre and still own the complete run I purchased during its original publication. The series featured several serial killers who really put Wesley Dodds (The Sandman) through the wringer. I also very much appreciated Wesley's romantic relationship with Dian Belmont, a character who was a far cry from your typical "hyper-idealized" comic book female. Guy Davis' artwork was the perfect fit for this book.
I’m a little confused (respectfully) you guys read the DC All In special last week, so this is like the MU and their Ultimate Universe ongoing. It’s not Elseworlds. This is the flip side of the DCU coin. So this is the first of the Trinity out of the gate with of their Darkseid Alternate DCU. That’s the point of the retelling of the Batman (and subsequently Superman & Wonder Woman) origin story in this alternate universe based as it is on Darkseid as its genesis energy vs. the DCU proper which is built on Superman energy. I believe that would be the point of this launch? 🤷🏼♂️
Richard , for learning/brushing up your french by reading comics may i suggest reading the asterix series. I believe asterix is a french series comic. I have only read the english translation. I find the series quite amusing. If you had never heard of it , the series revolves around the main character Asterix and his friend Obelix . They live in Gaul - part of ancient france _ and i think the only region unconquered by Rome. They have a secret potion that gives the drinker superhuman strength so you have a village of super powered people. Hilarity ensues when the romans time and again tries to conquer the village.
I gotta say I kinda love this first issue of Absolute Batman. Bruce's apparent new parental situation makes him vulnerable. The crime over run city is the worst I can remember it being. And this new Alfred might be the best version of the character yet. The Bat-axe was a bit odd but not as silly as I might have thought it could be. So even as an old fart that's been reading Bats for about 47 years, I'm really looking forward to seeing where this story is going.
John and Richard, I could be wrong about this but I believe there is an underlying story behind this alternate universe which was either created and or is controlled by Darkseid. There is a lot more to these absolute characters than just trying to reimagine them.
I think it’s establishing a new continuity. And I like Absolute Batman! Looking fwd to checking out Absolute Wonder Woman and Superman also. I’m old too btw lol
In the spirit of 1983 being the best year in music (with 1984 a very close second), and 1986 being the best year in comics, maybe it's time to transition the "25-year rule" to the "40-year rule", where some of the best copper age comics were about to be released.
Just read Absolute Batman, too. It was enjoyable but they didn't reinvent the wheel as far as I'm concerned. I wish DC and Marvel would go the Saga way of doing books--six in a row then take a break like Staples & Vaughan do--or do "seasons" like Morrison and Sharpe did a few years ago on Green Lantern. To be honest, this old fart (i have a few years on both of you) finds myself turning more and more back to the books and characters I loved as a kid. Modern day comics are bewildering. And hey, stay off my @#$%ing lawn, you two!
Richard, is there any connection between the Zoot comic and the woman named Zoot in Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Is the comic book even about a woman named Zoot???
Absolute Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman takes place in darkseid’s universe. This is a take on a darker universe controlled by darkseid. That’s the point of the comic.
In 10 years Superman and Batman copyright ends. I feel like these absolute Batman and Superman bookw, besides boosting sales exists to hinder any company from trying to use these characters for their own lines.
I want to read the first issue or two of each Absolute... series for myself, but I'm not wowed by what I know. They are 5 bucks for less pages, stories that are dark and gritty, and will probably get overwritten by the next event. The All In special basically sets this up like Earth2 from the New 52 era - there just to set up a Darkseid event that the "real heroes" will solve. We all know by this time next year, the two universes will team up to destroy Darkseid and the Absolute universe will disappear.
JSA fans were absolutely blessed in the 1990s with Sandman Mystery Theatre and Starman. Both books are well written with fabulous art.

Oh I like that new “headline grabbing” opening! Keep that going! Very exciting! 🤩🙌🏼🥳
Yes! Thank you!
Sandman Mystery Theatre was a wonderful series. A real gem. :)

They creators have signed two year contracts. It's sticking around

Great show guys.
I've recently discovered your channel and have been loving catching up on your previous episodes.
Keep up the great content.
:)

Great show. Sandman mystery theatre was great. I still have some issues.
Plots? I remember those. Maybe with the nostalgia kick going on, someone will resurrect them.
I love the 90's Blue and Gold era of X-men.

Shades of the Ultimate Universe with The Maker as the catalyst.

Great show, as always!
BTW, did you guys hear that MEGO is creating toys based on the old Atlas/Seaboard comics?
I would give tht absolute Batman a “its ok”
So you are telling us that there is a non-zero chance we might get "Absolute Pat Boone"?

Really enjoyed the first issue and look forward to more. Also excited for Absolute Superman with writer Jason Aaron. Both on my Pull-list

Richard: Maybe you could show your bondage cover collection, some day in the future?👀
I did enjoy Absolute Batman and will continue through. As far as the best year in comics, 1986 was awesome, but 1940....???
Let's get an episode devoted to music and comics. The kiss comic with blood in it. Guess what rocker is a comic collector and so on.
OK guys .... what's the difference between honky tonk and boogie woogie? I could never figure that out.

5 books i think.... i hope.
"What is the point of Absolute Batman #1," you ask? The real point is to repackage an old story in a new wrapper to make new money.
Absolute Batman is Peter Parker, to your Stan Lee Imagines point. Grew up less advantaged but smart and invented his tech as a youngster.
Is the new bat logo that way because Bruce Wayne works for the sewer department now?
Batman’s head is so small on the cover….
Looks like Cap has a 100 pound tumor on his chest
Why does Batman look so ridiculous? If that's the contemporary idea of him, it's downright laughable.
A kind of different Batman beating up thugs in a kind of different way. Meh.
