Vintage Honda S65 engine seized, attempting to unlock (fail!). Disassembly preparation!!!

  • Hey everyone,
    Welcome back to episode 3 of the series on my 1965 Honda S65. In this video I make attempts to unlock the seized engine, as well as prep the nuts and bolts for disassembly using PB Blaster penetrating oil.

      Hey Carl! I’m also very limited besides the C70 passport I disassembled cleaned and reassembled last winter. So far, so good!

    Dave, Now you've done it. I went from small motors to 1970's, 1980's mopeds, scooters etc. In the last 7 years I've had 40 of them come and go. I've only worked on one Honda, similar to yours. I'd get the propane heater out, and go around ight away, before even trying to remove some of those nuts/bolts. Heat them up, then when they are hot, spray some more penetrating fluid on them. (Be careful not to catch on fire). That bike needs a lot, and having watched your videos, I can tell that you wouldn't be happy with it only partially working. Before the cosmetics, work on the basics. In this case ignore everything except the engine and kick start, check the piston rings to see if they are locked up first. If it is truly locked up, more than likely it isn't just from sitting, it was the person before that broke it and parked it. That's my two cents. Good luck.

    ...enjoyed the update Dave......most people don't give penetrating oil enough time to do it's job....for really stuck hardware, I like to give it overnite...
    makes a world of difference...looking forward to the next video.. :)

      And on the really rusted bad fasteners, like on that shock, penetrating oil alone won't do much. Its gonna require heat and quench to give the best chance. Heat up fastener till cherry red hot using a MAP gas torch, then quench it with cold water. If that doesn't work, drilling out is your only recourse at that point.

    Dave try ATF and actone 50/50 mix on rusty bolts,works great.You have to shake the container,it tends to separate ,when the it sits on the work
    bench.

    I think selecting 4th gear will make it easier to move the engine by applying force to the rear wheel. One have to think the opposite way regarding transmission. I think…

    Penetrating oil will most certainly help. But with fasteners that look like they have rust welded themselves as one, the only thing that is really going to help you with those, is heat them up cherry red with a MAP gas torch, then quench them with cold water. Your right about parts of this bike looking pretty far gone. Who knows, maybe you will prevail, only way to know is to do it. Good luck!

    What I would do is disassemble the engine to see how bad the rust is , trying to force it may break rings and bend parts . If you do not want to do the work , then sell it for parts . there is a lot of people looking for parts for these bikes .

      Not much. Thought I could record audio to solve some of the echo issues however, not the case. Check my latest post - I picked up a new microphone.

    Remove the engine and soak in a kerosine bath for awhile,that might help unseize it.

    the kickstarter doesnt really put a lot of torque on the crank. you should really get a socket directly on the crank
    shaft and gently rock it back and fourth to free up the engine . there are a few good videos on how to free a seized motorcycle engine on youtube . also maybe consider just dropping in a lifan engine so you can have some fun on the bike while you are rebuilding the original engine.

      Hey Jeff! I am totally thinking of a Lifan. I picked up a “rebuilt” S65 engine… from a guy I’m not sure I trust. It’s a gamble but it looks clean!
