    Respect from the United Kingdom pal!, you probably saved me from injury because I was gonna use a normal drill to get my 200 cc 4 stroke go cart to start because the pull cord is broken and I think it’s also flooded so I have been struggling to get the thing going and it used to get started on the first pull.

    I really enjoy every one of your videos. Just remember your wheelchair is temporary. I am in a wheelchair permanently. It's not so bad for me because I still have one leg to stand up and work under the hood and have a midrise lift that my wheelchair fits under. I've been working on cars professionally for 23 years, after I was injuried if been working in my wheelchair for 9 years and have adapted quite well. I can still do everything I used to be able to do in my wheelchair at my home shop, even heavy work. Stay positive my friend as it's the best way to overcome an obstacle. My home shop is much smaller than yours, but it is as organized and well thought out as your shop. I really like your ideas

    Hey Jeff Dewalt has a new line of tools called Flexvolt. The batteries can be used on any Dewalt 20v tools. It's a 20v/60v battery. More mA on 20v tools or standard on 60v tools. They are pricey but maybe they could be used on your project. By the way there is also an adapter that lets you use the newer 20v batteries on the older 18v Nicad tools.

    You would bendy benefit from s 9ah or even a 6ah. They can deliver a lot more current. Those wires you have linking the packs are likely too small to provide a benefit. But you may also be maxing out the drill. Torque test channel consistently shows that 9ah improves performance

    Torque wouldn't be changed by voltage or current. Get a starter and modify it to run your tool you made. Weld a handle on it and you will get the Torque you want. Oh and wear insulated gloves. LOL

    try holding it so the handle is not on the foot peg and use a lottle strength ot even a ppring to lighten the initial start up load on the drill. Or use an extended on that handle to increase the moment arm by which you can hold it in place.

    I made mine with a harbor frieght halfinch drive socket wrench cyt the handle off amd tacked welded a drill chuck on the other end and made sure to keep the clockwise and counter clockwise selector free to be able to change depending on the engine and when the engine starts it spins freely just the same as the socket wrench would and it engages in whichever direction u choose and it took about 15 mins and 10 bucks to make instead of ripping apart a chevy starter i mean ur tool definitely looks nicer but mine does the job and is really strong also i found using a air tool or a corded drill it doesnt struggle or potentially ruin a cordless also at lowes u can buy these drill starters for craftsman weedwhackers the tool cost 20 bucks but is ment fir 50ccs and under

  • @WSmart1
    @WSmart1 6 років тому

    Here’s a thought Jeff. Try a little different technique in how you apply the drill. When you hit the button, hold loosely on the drill and let the handle slip or rotate a bit before you catch it firmly, kind of clutch it by hand. Not too loose. You don’t want it to get out of hand. But that way the drill is moving when the sensor checks and maybe it adds a little zip on the initial punch too. Loved that shot of the bird on the silo. Really captures a moment in Midwest landscape and outdoors when you panned out.
    Be real youtube, face life without the booze.

  • @RedfishInc
    @RedfishInc 3 роки тому

    The drill starter is a good Idea especially for those who may only occasionally need to start a small engine. For those who need to start engines on a more or less regular basis I think a portable starter made from a car starter and a lawn battery is more the ticket. Similar to the starters they use on formula 1 cars or racing go karts. Should be very easy to build and fairly cheap too if you use junk yard parts. Even a starter from a lawn tractor would probably turn that honda engine just fine, paired with a 7 amp hour SLA battery it would be reasonably light weight as well. Anyways just thinking out loud.

    Thanks for you build !! Great idea !! Liked !! From my background in electronics, I would say the voltage drop on the hanging battery is enough to cause it to supply less than 1/3 of the current that would be possible if it had heavy wire. It looked like you used 12 gauge wire which is good for 20 amps which seems like that is ok ... but that 24 inches ( i figured 6 in x 4 - each battery for each color) of 12 g wire offers a lot more resistance than the battery that is hooked directly to the drill. In addition i guess it's the current regulator on the motor that is kicking out ... so even with a bigger battery you will probably still have the problem - i am only guessing on that :) Good Luck !!

    Hay brother get a 12 volt starter for a polaris 400 2 stroke scrambler. it has a gear reduction drive and is about the size of a brigs & stratton starter but with the power of a car starter. then get an old 10 speed bike and rob the gear set off the rear tire. it will spin one way and free wheel the other. weld the 10 speed gear to the starter gear then weld your cranking sprocket to the other side of the 10 speed gear. now take one of your 12 volt drill lipos and wire to it with a switch. now make a small box to house all this in and you are good to go. or better than this is to just buy a hand held 12 volt remote starter like the ones the go cart racing community use to crank thee modified engines. those work amazing and would crank your atv all day no problem at all and cost you less than that big ass drill probably did! hahahah love ya bro, glad to see you thinking outside the box. i live outside the box! visit me sometime.

    That gel cell that you connected up doesn't have the high amperage discharge rate like those lithium-ion batteries. The gel cell will struggle to discharge at 30 amps but the lithium batteries will produce over 100 amps or more. I learned about batteries way back when I was racing RC cars. Yep, had a few hard lessons in batteries.

  • @diychad7268

    With your battery setup hooking them in parallel like that won't double the current it will just double the life of the battery or in other words how long it will last before it dies and you need to charge it again, of course hooking it in series would give you 40 volts but the same amount of life as one of the batteries..... However because of the circuitry attached to the batteries and in the drill I'm pretty sure everything's regulated to that 20 volts so even if you put 30 volts to it the motor in the drill is still only going to get 20 or I think it's 18 actually

    Interesting and informative video. Did you consider getting the Dewalt XR Brushless 3 Speed high torque 1/2" drive Impact Wrench instead of the drill/driver. Seems like the Impact Wrench would've been more suited to what you needed the tool for. Great video and a great education in power tool electronics. Tesla's interest in the possibilities of AC current is vindicated once again.

      The bolt on the flywheel will loosten with an impact. I have to over tighten it with an impact to use that drive or it comes loose. It would need to be a LH thread. Thank you for your thoughts - just wished to get back for you trying to help out. Thank you - Much appreciated!!!

    Good video. I have to make me one of these. Maybe use your foot starter to turn the engine to TDC on a/the compression stroke. Too bad there is no compression release.
    I have a little 3hp briggs that I was starting with a 1/2" drill with a 1/4" socket extension. After it kicked back twice it twisted off the extension. Pulled out my hair on that one. Turned out the flywheel was not a great fit to the crankshaft. A session with valve lapping compound fixed it.

      Neat write up you had there Dan! Actually the second gen engines do have a compression release. I did film reaching over the seat, holding light pressure on the kicker and as you suggested/thought that did work perfect every time. We were up north in the cold last weekend and everything worked wonderful. It was below zero in the mourning. The 350 wouldn't start after a long crank. Forgot to turn switch to run - duh..... ;>)

    Hey there good Sir. I know that this video is several years old, but wanted to know how you are doing this without the bolt coming lose. Looks like one of your answers was to use a drill instead of an impact gun. Is that correct? I want to do this on an NSR50 and and NSF100 with a super high hp and compression stroker-big bore motor. Did you have to drill out the access port or was that motor already setup with the access? My motors don't have one. Thanks in advance

    Liked the video before I watched it! I wonder how one of those battery powered impacts would do?

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  6 років тому +3

      Hi Tony. If you meant to use for the cranking purpose the impact's are a different design to obtain the torque with a hammer effect. I did use an impact to tighten the crankshaft bolt a bit above normal where it is being turned backwards (loosen direction) to start the engines in an abnormal way... You bet, did follow your thought idea for sure!

    the reason why more amps makes the stop issue worse is there is less voltage drop under load, computer senses greater potential for damage/heat buildup, then shuts down quicker than if you used a lower amp battery setup. probably would still crank the beast over quick with a small battery

    You’re adding capacity by hooking 2 5 amp/hr to get 10, what you want is more current, (amperage) to get more grunt. When you increase voltage you decrease amps. A 10 amp/hr battery has more capacity in run time over the 5 , not power. The power would increase by wiring the batteries in series , pos-neg, neg to pos.
    Now you have more power. It would eventually burn out the motor, but not for a long time considering how short a Burst it actually runs to start the bike.
    The way you were doing it you were just making a bigger battery of the same power.

    I have an outboard motor that I need to rig up DIY starter for. They offer an electric starter kit, but charge $750 for it. I was wondering how to make a safety drive & the Chevy starter drive unit looks like the answer.

      Try the Performance Tool 3/8" Drive Ratcheting Socket Adapter. It is sold at Speedway and on Ebay for maybe $12 bucks or so. However, remember that you have to reset it after each use of it may get kicked back to the wrong direction when you have used it. It is like using a seat belt, in that you know each time you get into the car, you need to fasten your seatbelt. Same with this adaptor, as you have to always check it to make sure it is in the correct drive position or it can indeed kick back on you and possibly ruin your day, for sure. Tape or JB weld can lock it in place permanently so you don't have to worry in using this adaptor. The starter piece works great too, but if you are only using this for an occasional start up on a hard to start mower, edger or such and have limited welding equipment tor welding skills, then the ratchet adaptor is likely all you will need. I went to a local Auto Zone today to see if they had such in stock. The two simpleton people working the counter there today really didn't even know what products they sold to begin with. Good luck in tracking down the ratchet adaptor. There are some great videos on using such on UA-cam, mostly under hard starting lawn equipment though.

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  5 років тому

      Unfortunately it turned too slow (snaps violently when compression hits) shearing off the left hand threaded torx bolt in the center of the chuck which holds it on. Reason being that the drill is running backward for this use and the chuck wants to unscrew. That tiny torx wants to stop it from coming off but is not strong enough. (I did bust several on testing) Hope this helps you out where what you said is very logical....
