So sad they singled out Alan Freed,He deserved many more years playing the hits I'm sure he'd be delighted people are still listening to the music he put on the map RIP Alan
Alan R.I.P. A lesser known fact about Alan is that during his rise to fame and move to NY where he worked at 1010 WINS, he built a home in Brookville, NY now known as the Gold Coast. The split ranch home began its build in 1956, was built to spec and unlike the other homes in the area had a unique floor plan and layout unlike any other home in the neighborhood. It was completed in 1958 but unfortunately due to the payola scandal, he was never able to move in. The house was purchased by one family whose name I protect here and in 1963 my parents became the second owners. I lived there for 28 years and my parents still reside there after 55 years. We have nothing but great memories from there. The house will be sold probably sometime in 2019-2020 and unfortunately its legacy will probably be lost as well as people buy these homes for millions and knock them down to erect Hugh mansions in this area now. A special note to Alan Freed, I was too young to have ever met you but I thank you for having built our family one incredible house. R.I.P sir..................
Thanks for sharing your memories. I think Freed was a pioneer who became an easy target for politicians who loved the publicity they got for attacking him and the other DJs. Glad you and your parents were able to enjoy the home he built.
Alan Freed was the pre-eminent DJ of early Rock n Roll. He had the guts, and the drive to take Rock out of the dark and into the bright lights of the music entertainment field. He was a genius. Great guy.
He wasn't the only one from that era whose life was cut short, but he is in great company, to start naming names wouldn't be appropriate, because I'd be bound to forget some and then someone would say, 'but you forgot so and so." Let's just leave it at that, that era spawned Rock n' Roll and there were many great artists in the 50's at its birth. Allan Freed was the first of many great DJ's all around the world who brought us Rock and Roll music.
Child actress Tuesday Weld! Only 13 years old here playing 17 year old Dori. She was the ultimate Hollywood vixen. Her affairs, (one with Elvis Presley) marriages, Romps, and divorces graced the covers and stories of many gossip rags of the era. Now retired in Hollywood Hills.
Excellent, a movie that was made to pretty much showcase the music, they weren't out to get any Academy Awards. Alan was great on 1010 wins. After Payola, it was never the same for him. He died way too young.
Ironically, the "Popular Music" (read whites only radio) DJs were all taking a lot more payola money (Bigger market, more competion) than Freed ever took, but, the real point was to "get" him for "corrupting" the white kids, with "race" music!
The one that catches my eye is the uncredited dancing girl during Rock Rock Rock by Jimmy Cavallo. She has a flowery skirt. Her energy and dance steps are remarkable. She spins beautifully and although we enjoy seeing her legs when her skirt goes up she even dances barefoot. Wish we knew her name. Wish I had a prom date like her back in the day. We could have torn up the dance floor.
This has something to do with rock made by white musicians, this is more connected with soul and funk which is a direct influence of rock and roll from the 50s which was black music to dance, I mean Michael Jackson and Prince of modern rock and roll of that legacy and not the white artists that is another type of music very far from that influence of rock from the 50s
Frankie & his Brother Louie Grew up in our neighborhood in Fort Greene Brooklyn May he RIP They were great guys very talented ,As far as I know Louie is still around & doing his Music etc.
Amazing how the exquisite Valerie Harper looked the same at sixteen as she did throughout her life. She's on screen for a few seconds starting at around 1:18.
Wish I had a Dollar for all of the Alan Freed, Shows that I walked to the Brooklyn Paramount from my House, Only 15 Minutes Away etc & the FoxTheatre also etc.Good Old Brooklyn, How I still miss it etc.
Connie Francis did the singing voice for Tuesday Weld's character. If you watch the film all the way through, you will spot a teenaged Valerie Harper (yes Our RHODA) applauding Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. The actor who played Tuesday's father played Robert Reed's boss on THE BRADY BUNCH.
Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed watching this movie, bringing back memories. I was good friends with Little Butchie Saunders of The Elchords, whom was friends with Frankie Lymon.
In 1958, Freed faced controversy in Boston when he told the audience, "It looks like the Boston police don't want you to have a good time." As a result, Freed was arrested and charged with inciting to riot, and was fired from his job at WINS. ....Copy-paste from wikipedia ...oh my God! what a freedom to speak there was.
First, she was tormented by addiction and bad relationships. She also had a knack for turning down great roles like Lolita in 1962. Life just didn't go her way unfortunately.
Retail you are correct he coined the phrase rock n roll this is our generation the street corner 50s did you know the bible guarantees a resurrection see acts 24 vs.15 their are no lies in the bible his word
Anyone know this old song. I heard part of it but don't know the artist "They called it rock, rock, rock, and it started in Kansas city *something something* who heard it from New Orleans" ?
Love this movie, should have got someone a little prettier to play Gloria, adversary to Dori, quite frankly its not close. Anyway my favourite part is when Dori's father gets caught up in the music without realizing it and Aribella ends up on the floor 😂😂
I enjoyed this film, but it seems to me that many of the artists and songs that were included in this movie were actually not very well known at the time, and some never became well known. Even the artists who actually were well known, are not performing big hits (except for a couple of exceptions) and instead are performing fairly obscure songs. Was this movie supposed to be a way of introducing new artists and new songs? I feel that it would have been more beneficial to have popular artists doing their biggest hits, as it was often done at the live Rock & Roll concerts.
I am not sure what year this was filmed? Elvis was serving in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. The “Big Bopper” also known as Jiles Perry "J.P." Richardson Jr. was killed in the Plane Crash on February 3, 1959 along with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. Some people consider that date “The Day The Music Died” which was immortalized by Don McLean in his 1972 anthem “American Pie”.
I clicked on this with the expectation it was going to be a serious documentary on Alan Freed. Instead I get what looks to be a Z-grade "exploitation flick" by the opening credits. *NO THANKS!*
I just hated hearing Connie Francis's wonderful voice coming out of Tuesday Weld! It was so distracting, I couldn't enjoy the film as I would have otherwise. I also didn't care much for Weld's character; Dori was a little manipulator, really worse than her rival, Gloria.
I feel sorry for Lavern Baker, talent the size of a house, but her career was totally kneecapped by some of the worst material ever (Her record company made her into a novelty act... including forcing her to tour with an embarrassing "BF" called 'Stumpy', who was like something right out of a minstrel show!)
So sad they singled out Alan Freed,He deserved many more years playing the hits I'm sure he'd be delighted people are still listening to the music he put on the map RIP Alan
Alan Freed was a pioneer when it came to promoting Black music. RIP UK

Pedophilia is rife in Hollyweird since its inception.
It is steeped in iniquity & peddles in sin.

Randanzzo was awesome, great singer

Frankie & his Brother Louie Grew up in our neighborhood in Fort Greene Brooklyn May he RIP They were great guys very talented ,As far as I know Louie is still around & doing his Music etc.
This is a lie. In fact, the Lymon Family lived in Harlem, NY in the Washington Heights section during Frankie and Louie's upbringing.
I had the biggest crush on Teddy Randazzo after seeing this film way back when.
This is a really good movie 😊
Four minutes in and I'm already getting popcorn.
Great music from the 1950's ! Tuesday Weld who performed on 'Dobie Gillis".
She also co-started with Elvis Presley in the 1961 drama, “Wild In the Country.”😉👍
