  • When I posted my New Year's Day lunch plate of food one of the items on it that got the most attention was the hot water cornbread. A lot of people had never heard of it. It's pretty easy to make and very delicious. My friend, Colleen, who is the expert on hot water cornbread in these parts, is here to show me how to make it.

That looks good. You know what I wish? I wish UA-cam was around when Vestal was alive, I learned to make dumplings watching her on some tv show that I can’t remember now. But I bet she was an awesome cook

Have you tried searching for her on UA-cam or Google? I typed in Vestal cooking show and got a few hits I wasn't sure which one might be the one since I didn't really know who you were talking about.

My grandmother used to make these when she cooked black eyed peas. Colleen is right. They are the perfect trinity of food - black eyed peas, collard greens and fried cornbread patties. I remember adding butter to the top of mine and watching it melt. I loved these things. Great memory!

It is called "Poor people's eatin" made the same way as "fry bread" only using cornmeal instead of flour. It is all Southern Style eatin'. I wish we would have had the cornmeal instead of the flour, it would have tasted much better!! We usually ate the Fry Bread with Pinto Beans, but this would have definitely been 10 times better! We were lucky as kids if we had food at all. Have been in that situation as an adult a few times too, but God came through every time! I will try this as soon as I get some more cornmeal. So simple and easy to make. Happy New Year!

I made my first batch of hot water cornbread, today for lunch. I made the patties too thick and they didn't get completely done in the center. This afternoon I watched your video and realized I needed to make the patties thinner next time. I had three thick ones left over from lunch, so I sliced them and made them thin and cooked the patties a second time, with the raw center side down. Wow, that works, but next time I make them, I will do what you two did and make them thin to start out with.

She married my East Texas daddy and learned to make all the favorites...Hot Water Cornbread, Sawmill Gravy, Chicken Fried Steak, Collard Greens and on and on. I am a great cook because of her and Colleen she taught me to throw together, never measure.

It's good with blue corn too.
Now you made me want some for lunch but I have errands to run and decent cornmeal is hard to find around here.

I never heard of hot water cornbread, but I am certainly going to try it! I make cold water cornbread: white (plain) cornmeal, salt, and cold water. Stir it up and drop it by spoonfuls in hot oil in your skillet. An old man (kin) used to keep a fridge in his shed stocked full of cornmeal so he could fry cornbread like this for his dogs every afternoon. He called it dog bread! My aunt calls hush puppies: shut up dogs!! I love you Mark Lowry.... You tickle my funny bone! I love to hear you sing "House of Gold" matter of fact, I listen to the Vocal Band every night to fall asleep! God Bless you!

Well, aren't y'all just the perfect picture of domestic tranquility cooking together? We make those but we call them cornbread patties. Also, if you havw leftover blackeye peas, mash them, add sage and raw onions to this same mix. They are definitely delicious!! ❤❤ Good cooking lesson.
