Hey mate, I'm sharing this on Facebook as a must see before amateurs play live. Very good advice! Less 'is' More. Used to hear a DJ who loved to do spin backs whilst transitioning if he was losing the mix.
I love using echo, delay, filters, some flanger, a couple other things. All in moderate quantities, of course. You can't just keep hitting the filter every 4 beats because it'll sound annoying. But in the right spots, all of the effects I've mentioned can create a great atmosphere and build-up for what's ahead.
The resonant filter, it's not per se a delay, it's a phase shift. Ok, the difference is subtle, but the resonant filter is an analogue effect, and in analogue, unless you had some kind of mechanical device (rotating magnetic media, a spring with speaker/mic attached), you couldn't really get a delay, you could get a phase shift, which is a small delay which is shorter than half a wavelength, is not perceived as a delay, and doesn't cause comb artefacts when added to original signal. The result of this phase play, basically the only audible one, is a difference in frequency response of the filter. While the EQ is designed to always be smooth, the resonant filter accentuates, amplifies the frequencies around the corner frequency and then decays sharper than an EQ.
hey phil, in your opinion, what is your take on DjTechTool's and their videos on using effects (/watch?v=QrNqFXnI_Pg)? It seems like they use it a great deal in their performances, contrary to what your saying in this vid. And so could you see these effect techniques being incorporated to djing? Thanks! I am learning a great deal from your courses btw
Always giving very sound and wise advice, thank you so much for your time and dedication.
That's really nice to hear, glad to help :)
This is exactly what I was looking for and what I needed to know.
Thank you!

You rock Phil. Structured, accurate and informative as always!
thank you for another awesome video, phil, it is much appreciated :)
Wow! What an excellent video and thoughtful/accurate opinions on effects usage.

wow solid advice thanks man!
Good perspective thank you.

LOL 07:31 a friend of mine does that all the time, he uses air horn when he does it, so annoying
Test the effects out first with your spare time to see which ones that will please you.
Yes :-)
always try new effects. its the only way to learn. probably better in your basement instead of a show
