  • The Art Deco in Mumbai, India style is a notable feature of the architecture of the city. It was used primarily for office buildings, residences and movie theaters, during a period when India was part of the British Empire. On 30 June 2018, an ensemble of such buildings were officially recognized as a World Heritage site by the UNESCO World Heritage committee held in Bahrain as the Victorian and Art Deco Ensemble of Mumbai.
Mumbai is believed to have the second-most Art Deco buildings in the world, after Miami

Nowadays, Mumbai suburbs (Oshiwara, parel, goregaon east, BKC) are looking much better with highrises glass facade futuristic good looking buildings...
no wonder this mentality of preserving "garbage" in the name of heritage, has spell doom for South Bombay,.. this art deco garbage needs to go ..for modern clean buildings to come up.
Only cst station, regal cinema, Bombay High court, clock tower, taj hotel and gateway of India should be considered a "true" heritage...apart from that all buildings with ac butting out with their dilapidated art deco facade needs to go. How hypocrite of this building owners after ruining their art deco facade with ugly AC butting out..they claim the building is still a heritage...why? Should it be preserved? İt has been mutilated, you yourself have done it!! İt no longer deserves "heritage status" they need to be razed...down to ground... And new centrally cooled buildings with good modern of futuristic facade should come up.
Also roads need to layered with good surface ,roads are garbage as well. Cheers. Be happy in your own little ponds if you compare it with world level it's no where near to roads in America or Europe , even china has better roads.
-the writer of this thought belong to a "architecture fraternity " Have a good day.

The reason the suburbs are looking better than south Bombay is due entirely to incomes. The jobs have moved north and thus the infrastructure has followed. South Bombay’s only real path to success at this point is tourism. Destroying our heritage would destroy its last hope at survival. Also Art Deco is a very pretty style. It’s far more charming than any glass high rise.

@@Raky2427 İ am not against art deco style, i am against mutilation of art deco facades, on one side these building owners say they wanna preserve art deco,, then they themselves destroy it by putting ugly AC's butting out a , poor grill fabrication around their dilapidated windows, and ugly mobile towers on their heritage art Deco buildings.
      Why?
İsn't that a destruction of its heritage ?
Why some things when it suits you comfort and profit you allow it, and when it doesn't , you say it's a heritage.
      That's double standards.
İn plain English it is hypocrisy.
These building owners are indeed a bunch of hypocritic elites.

@@weheartart9366 the building owners should definitely be forced into improving the facades of their buildings. That’s without doubt. I don’t understand why you feel that warrants a complete redevelopment of the city? Why don’t we instead recommend that the BMC put out a plan to improve building facades.

@@Raky2427 as an architect, when you see things from my perspective, the old needs to go , for something new to come up, too much of same art Deco style means decrease in self value,
less of art deco means more of value.
Anyway the buildings are near their expiry date.. end of their lifecycle, if you don't raze them now , it will itself get torn apart . İf it goes like that , a slight earthquake shake will bring this so could novelties to dust..
      İnstead of waiting for it..
Think like it why not we build truly Indian buildings ,with a blend and mix of maratha, or perhaps, mughal architecture and slight fusion of art deco ,?
      Will it look good ,
      Absolutely!!
      Will it last long
      Absolutely.
      Will it house more people?

@@weheartart9366 The idea that buildings must be destroyed after a certain point in time is ludicrous. The concept of upgrading buildings is not a new one. As an architect you should know that 30% of all pollution is caused by construction. The idea of continually upgrading buildings instead of complete redevelopment has been widely accepted across your own field as a method to reduce pollution. Also, the idea that Bombay art deco is not Indian in character is simply incorrect. It was the first widespread architectural style in the city actually designed by Indian architects. Now would I also like some more indo-sarasenic and maratha buildings in the city, absolutely! But you want to destroy what makes Mumbai the city it is. If architects actually wanted to build new art deco and truly Indian buildings in Mumbai, they already would have. Mumbai has gone through its biggest construction boom in history. But no, that hasn't happened. the only style that has been constructed are glass box towers, which though quite nice, are not Indian in the slightest. Your idea would leave Mumbai a boring city devoid of character or personality. Now to tackle your final problem. Inbuilt parking. A solution for this has already been planned but hasn't been brilliantly implemented just yet. Due to new regulations you might have noticed that new buildings have a massive excess of parking. The idea being that they can provide parking for numerous neighbouring buildings. So all your issues can be solved without destroying anything.
