As cheesy as this is, it actually is really fucking clever game design. So many developers don't think this smart anymore. Or like how The Sorrow fight in MGS3 showed all the enemies you've killed. Like that's fucking cool-ass game design.
At the time, there was nothing cheesy about it (nearly 20 years ago). It was completely unexpected and amazing along with all his other tricks, like faking your system shutting off, or switching inputs.

Lol strange thing is that is not too inaccurate. The most remarkable thing about Psycho Mantis is while he can read minds. There were minds he read throughout his career that he wished he hadn't. The 4th wall break was awesome, then having to switch from controller port 1 to 2, it was quite powerful back in the day when gaming was still getting on it's feet
First time I fought Mantis, I thought the "Hideo" trick was actually my TV messing up, so I turned it off and back on, then asked my older brother what the problem was. He laughs and tells me "Oh thats just Mantis messing with you.....HAVE FUN" and walks out. Took me a dozen tries to beat him. 25 years later he's asking me how to beat things in MGSV.
Now, Psycho Mantis would just use the Bluetooth in his mask and check people's FaceBook, then be all, "You're in a relationship, aren't you? And you define it as "it's complicated."

David Reyna He also gets pissed when you use a Sixaxis controller since they don't have vibration. If you use a dualshock though, he exclaims in glee "YES! VIBRATION IS BACK!".
If you try and change your controller from player 1 to player 2 otacon calls you and mocks you for trying to use the same tactic twice. Snake just grumbles about not being able to move 😂 such a good callback to the original fight

The neat thing about this fourth-wall breaking was that it was also a clue to beating him. It got you thinking about your memory card slot so when he started reading your movements you might have thought "well, how about I change my controller port?"
I remember being a kid and defeating him fair and square with Flash and Automatic rifle, it took me more than half an hour. I didn't know English back then so that Colonel was no help for me. I knew he was reading my memory card, never crossed my mind to change controller ports.

It only does the memory card thing if there's save data on there that it was flagged to look for. I'm sure by this point someone has compiled a list of every save file there's a reaction for.
I didnt know that you have to switch controllers back then and defeated him without it. It was possible but took forever. You could still hit him once in a while, when he was off screen. :)

He's tacitly admitted that he often writes the plot around his more out-there concepts. The Colonel doesn't say "I need scissors, 61!" because he's a malfunctioning AI as much as he's a malfunctioning AI so he can say "I need scissors, 61!" Metal Gear Solid 2's ending was pretty openly not meant to make any sense, at least at the time - it was a collage of ideas that were all developed separately, by different people, and pasted together. Now, this requires a lot of skill to do effectively, but it's not just that Kojima is so talented that he can pull off weirdness that wouldn't work in other games, it's that the games are structured *around* the weirdness in a way that most narratives just aren't.

As cheesy as this is, it actually is really fucking clever game design. So many developers don't think this smart anymore. Or like how The Sorrow fight in MGS3 showed all the enemies you've killed. Like that's fucking cool-ass game design.

The 4th wall break was awesome, then having to switch from controller port 1 to 2, it was quite powerful back in the day when gaming was still getting on it's feet
First time I fought Mantis, I thought the "Hideo" trick was actually my TV messing up, so I turned it off and back on, then asked my older brother what the problem was. He laughs and tells me "Oh thats just Mantis messing with you.....HAVE FUN" and walks out. Took me a dozen tries to beat him. 25 years later he's asking me how to beat things in MGSV.
Now, Psycho Mantis would just use the Bluetooth in his mask and check people's FaceBook, then be all, "You're in a relationship, aren't you? And you define it as "it's complicated."

I remember being a kid and defeating him fair and square with Flash and Automatic rifle, it took me more than half an hour. I didn't know English back then so that Colonel was no help for me. I knew he was reading my memory card, never crossed my mind to change controller ports.

It only does the memory card thing if there's save data on there that it was flagged to look for. I'm sure by this point someone has compiled a list of every save file there's a reaction for.

@rayhanrehemaputra1719 It's because the weirdness is kind of the point. Kojima is like David Lynch: he uses the surreal as his canvas, rather than just adding weird ideas to a regular story.
He's tacitly admitted that he often writes the plot around his more out-there concepts. The Colonel doesn't say "I need scissors, 61!" because he's a malfunctioning AI as much as he's a malfunctioning AI so he can say "I need scissors, 61!" Metal Gear Solid 2's ending was pretty openly not meant to make any sense, at least at the time - it was a collage of ideas that were all developed separately, by different people, and pasted together. Now, this requires a lot of skill to do effectively, but it's not just that Kojima is so talented that he can pull off weirdness that wouldn't work in other games, it's that the games are structured *around* the weirdness in a way that most narratives just aren't.
