    Those small „canards“ are deployable Mach trim compensators. At higher Mach number, the nose of your aircraft goes down („Mach tuck“, „tuck under“). To compensate you need to trim the aircraft up, which drastically increases drag. To compensate, the smart designers added those small wing extensions, which create a nose up moment -> much less trim needed.

    The "canards" are glove vanes. Early model F-14s had them, removed later. They open at supersonic speeds to shift the centre of pressure forwards, to counter the wing sweeping back. This keeps the stability margin slim and preserves high manoeuvrability. Without them, sweeping the wing aft would cause a very rearward centre of pressure, very stable but bad for agility.

    The early F14s had the canards. They really didn't do anything, so they were removed and disabled later. Also A was woefully underpowered. Also F-14 was the first one to have the digital battlefield system. You could slave the plane to the AWACS and have the radar off. This way it was extremely stealthy and could lock without the enemy ever knowing about it.

      They actually did do something. They moved the centre of lift forwards when the wings were swept, so the pitch response at supersonic speeds was still good. They were removed when it became apparent the mechanical complexity wasn't worthwhile for the very rare occasion a supersonic turn fight might occur.

    • @Skilly_J
      @Skilly_J 2 роки тому +48

      Wow, lots to unpack here. As mentioned, the canards did have a function, but they were removed because it was essentially overengineering. Next, the A was not "woefully underpowered"; it used the same engines as the F-111, which as many know was the fastest low altitude bomber for decades. The F-14A could almost keep up with it in "Zone 5" afterburner. It was FAST. However the A's engines were very prone to compressor stalls at high Angles of Attack, and had less ideal performance at MIL power and were later replaced by GE engines. Finally, while it did have "Link 4" datalink, you COULD NOT lock onto those tracks and fire on them; they were essentially an overlay on the TID (the radar display) which helped you to cue into a target's location, altitude and direction.

    The glove vanes extended AFTER the Tomcat had transitioned into supersonic flight.
    This is why they are rarely known about. They did not extend when the wings were programmed aft manually.
    So F-14A's at airshows and the F-14A's in the movie Top Gun did not have them deployed as they did not exceed Mach 1.
    The glove vanes aided in performance at supersonic speeds, but ultimately were not a huge improvement.
    The F-14B and D variants did not have the glove vanes, they were only installed on the F-14A models.
    Regarding the Radar systems.
    The F-14A was the first "Production" Tomcat and as such the Radar and its abilities were completely operational.
    The F-14A was built with the AIM54 Phoenix missile in mind, meaning that the Radar was purposely selected for its ability to integrate the AIM54.
    There is footage on UA-cam of an F-14A Tomcat acquiring 6 test targets and firing on all 6 with the AIM54A.
    The AN/AWG-9 is an amazing and extremely powerful Radar, even by today's standards. I think it is still the largest and most powerful Radar to have been fitted to a fighter/strike aircraft.
    Also, TWS (Track While Scan) is nothing to do with a weapon's "fire and forget" capability.
    TWS just means that the Radar will use part of its power for tracking a target and it will use the remaining power to keep scanning, giving the crew better situational awareness and also allowing for more targets to be picked up.
    RWS (Range While Search) focuses the Radars "cone" (the area the Radar is looking at) and provides more detail on targets in this "cone".
    STT (Single Target Track) is exactly what the name implies, you are focusing all of your Radar's power on a single target. This is often the mode that will be used when guiding Fox 1 missiles (semi-active Radar guided) to a target. A "Fox 1" missile does not have onboard Radar and relies on the launch vehicle to update the target position and guide it in.
    The AIM54 Phoenix is a "Fox 3" missile, it has an onboard Radar that activates once the launch vehicle stops giving it guidance, meaning that the launch aircraft can remain in TWS or RWS Radar modes and launch on multiple targets without alerting the targets that there is a weapon guidance lock on them.
    The biggest reason why the AIM54 was such a scary weapon was that the TWS/RWS feature on the AN/AWG-9 was strong enough that the Tomcat could keep 6 targets actively tracked while the missiles were inbound, meaning the missiles did not need to activate their onboard Radars.
    Once the AIM54 was closer to its target, it would enter its 'terminal' phase and activate its onboard Radar for more accurate guidance calculations. Once its Radar was activated, the target would then receive an RWR warning, however, it was already too late.
    The AIM54 was within seconds of impact, giving the target less than a few seconds to react.
    The AN/AWG-9 Radar also had another 'party trick'.
    Because of how powerful it is, it is able to 'burn through' ECM (Electronic Counter Measure) jamming pods at greater ranges.
    The way most ECM Jamming pods work is that they deliberately send multiple echoes back when they detect a Radar signal. This results in the Radar seeing the bearing of the target, but not the range as it will show multiple targets on the same bearing line, but at varying ranges.
    This makes missile tracking difficult as the missile does not know which range to fly for.
    The closer the Radar is to the ECM, the more Radar energy is focused on it, allowing the Radar to "burn through" and see the actual target and not the echoes. The catch is that the target is usually within visual range by the time this happens, meaning you are going to be dogfighting and are at a higher risk. Some missiles have a HOJ (Home On Jam) mode, in which the missile would average the ranges and fly toward the target's "noise".
    The Tomcats AN/AWG-9 was so powerful that it could burn through most ECM jamming pods while still at BVR ranges, meaning the Tomcat crews could still engage from a 'safe' distance, without having to resort to dogfighting.
    Even if it did, the F-14 had EXCELLENT nose authority and was exceptional at dogfighting, even though it was a large aircraft.
    One of the key reasons for the Tomcat's EXCELLENT flight handling characteristics was the all-moving horizontal stabilizers (rear wings) that had a surface area of 70ft² each, totaling 140ft² of surface area controlling the aircraft's pitch.
    Compare that to the F/A18 A/B/C/D Hornets' horizontal stabilizers (rear wings, also called "Tailerons" on the Hornet) which had a total surface area of 88ft² squared, or 44ft² squared each.
    Hope this read was fun and not too technical :)

    • @fdenrico9861
      @fdenrico9861 2 роки тому +3

      it is a fun read, I've been watching DCS content lately so it's fun to finally understand what these terms the DCS players often use, one thing i'm confused is the RWR not triggered until the missile goes pitbull, in my understanding, RWR triggered if you've been "seen" by a radar, however on the TWS mode you described, when the Tomcat tracks their targets, why're their RWR not triggered? is it because of the radar intensity of the TWS mode so it doesn't picked up by the RWR? why isn't the RWR triggered *before* the phoenix uses its own radar?

    • @Blandy086
      @Blandy086 2 роки тому +3

      @@fdenrico9861 - Hi mate, cheers.
      When I speak about the RWR not triggering, I mean in terms of a weapon launch warning.
      The assumption being that if you are a potential target, then you will be operating in an area with active radars.
      Most pilots will acknowledge an active radar, but generally won't react to it until they get a threat warning.
      So yeah, any time I mention the rwr not giving a warning, it is in reference to the warning type.
      While in TWS/RWS mode, you are using a low power profile that an RWR would see as a general scan and as such the RWR will treat it as such.
      Because you are not needing to guide the weapon into the target, just close to it, you don't need all the information to be exact.
      As such, you don't need to focus the radar beam.
      When the AIM54 gets within 11 miles, it will activate its own onboard radar, which will then focus onto the target to provide accurate information.
      This is when the targets RWR will go bezerk with a missile launch warning.
      The catch is, the target will think it is a launch from the radar 50 miles away, when in reality, the missile is 10 seconds away.
      With semi-active missiles, you need accurate information to guide them to the target.
      TWS/RWS can still be used, but you need to know when your missile is close to the target so you can switch to STT mode and give the missile accurate information.
      Given that the missile won't show on radar, this makes this next to impossible, so semi-active missiles are launched in STT mode and the targets RWR will be alerted as soon as the missile comes off the rail.
      Hope this helps.

      @@Blandy086 ahhh i see, now i understand why
      in any scenario, it'd be normal if you're being tracked by radar since you're not flying a stealth plane, hence why it is considered normal and relatively safe when your rwr shows that you're being tracked, only when rwr shows that there's a missile launched that it is considered dangerous
      that's where the TWS mode advantages comes in... thanks for the explanation!
      plus it's interesting that you can use a fox1 missile similarly to a fox3 missile like that, even though it requires the pilot to do it manually instead of let the fox3 missile do its own thing with its own onboard radar

    I believe the F14, F15 and the F16 benefit from the 'lifting body' experiments starting in the 1960 in that the shape of the fuselage contributes to a significant degree the lift of the airframe. That's why there are famous stories of F-15 wings and horizontal stabs being damaged so badly in the last 20 years of warfare where they could still make it back to base after being hit by AAA or SAMs.

      They produced a maximum of 20,900lbf of thrust while the F110-GE-400 23,400lbf of thrust... A difference of only 2,500lbf.
      They were too prone to compressor stalls, which is why the F-14B onwards had the F110-GE-400 engines.
      Keep in mind, the new engines increased weight and the top speed never changed...
      Operational figures for the F-14 Tomcat, not the "No fuel, slick paint, speed runs to break records" configuration.
      F-14A -
      Weight: 40,102lb

    Well those Phoenix missiles are something special.
    They can switch from being a Fox 1 (passive radar quided) like the Sparrow to being a Fox 3 (active radar homing) like a AMRAM from the hornet.
    When you launch the Phoenix, like Phly said, in TWS long range it first comes off the rail passive as Fox 1 with the F-14 needing to ceep the lock on the target active or it is defeated. Once it gets close enough it goes Pitbull what means the missiles own radar starts emmiting and painting the target, what alarms the target of its presence but the F-14 can breake lock and go defensive, making it autonomous from the F-14.
    You can also send a Phoenix active from the get go like in a close proximity dogfight fust like a Sidewinder, just heavier and more explosive.
    That missile was astonishing for it's time.
    I think in the Traininggrounds Phly just had the Aim-54s active from the start reducing theyr tracking range although it should not be a problem locking a hot or cold target, notched yes but not just limited to rear aspect.
    I am looking forward to seeing the F-14 in action, thank you for the videos Phly

    • @RocketToTheMoose
      @RocketToTheMoose 2 роки тому

      The F-14 doesn't need to keep an STT lock on the target in the first phase of flight for the Phoenix. It uses track while scan mode to keep track of the target with it's computer, and relays that information to the the missile. The missile itself doesn't use it's radar like a Fox 1, instead relying on it's own INS and course corrections from the mother ship to get close. Then, as you say, it goes active with it's own radar. It can also be fired as a Fox1 semi-active missile (like a Sparrow) with the F-14 having a hard STT lock on the target, but it will never go pit bull in that mode.

    • @StarStream4U
      @StarStream4U 2 роки тому

      @@RocketToTheMoose indeed the F-14 can just keep the bogey on TWS for the Phoenix to find the target, maybe I phrased it wrong yes but that is how it was explained to me if I remember correctly.
      Or they just used the 'Fox-1' explanation during phase one as why I should not break TWS lock since the missile would go dumb if the RIO looses the target.
      I do not know if you can lose the target and reaquire it for the missile to then correct onto it.
      You could also fire the Phoenix Fox-1 during boresight mode, with the radar just pointing straight ahead and illuminating everything Infront of it, giving the missiles the ability to just follow the first best radar reflection. But since that is a very inaccurate mode if you have a furball (many jets close together) and has a short range it would not be my mode of choice.

      The PWTF30 is interesting though, as its effectively a scaled down version of the engine in the SR-71. However the need to operate/fight at varying speeds and altitudes, gives the GE-110's a considerable edge. Phly Daily goes on a crazy explaination about how the F-14 Missiles work. Here's a TLDR verison:
    The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.
    In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was.

Don't know if you can in this game, but that's a tactic IRL back in the day. Also, IRL you would accelerate when you land and hope your hook caught that way if you missed the cables, you could take back off. Does that work in this as well?

    Never noticed that your engine sounds cut off, when you reach supersonic speeds. I mean, of course you should stop hearing your engine when you fly faster than the speed of sound, but it's still a nice detail to implement :)

    Honestly my first impressions of the jet is that is cool and all, but 60 countermeasures is not a lot. Even though I do run single chaff and single flare (mixed). This only gives me 30 pops before I am out and dead. I don't think this is going to be a massive issue, but maybe in the future the f14 can receive a ecm pod.

    16:22 So that’s not actually related to the TWS capability, TWS is exactly what the name says, you can keep tabs on a target while still scanning for other threats without them knowing you’ve locked em. Being able to disengage comes from the Phoenix seeker, because the range is massive, the time to pitbull is also massive and basically the Phoenix will always be pitbull in war thunder maps.

    some F-14A’s had those canards they where fazed out by the time the D variant of the tomcat come around

  • @retrocny5625
    @retrocny5625 2 роки тому

    Those sweeping canards you're referencing at the start are Glove Vanes. They would deploy above supersonic speeds around 1.4 mach, and only the F-14A had them. And from what I understand, even then on deployment, they usually didn't use them or deactivated them some how. Later models of the F-14 did away with them all together. My understanding is that they were a giant maintenance hassle and they had trouble with them, more trouble than they were worth I'd assume. I believe the purpose of the glove vanes were to give the pilot more pitch and turning authority at speeds above 1.5 mach, essentially to pull more G at those speeds. I'd think you're not really doing a lot of hard maneuvering at those speeds anyway, since it's well above the best turning speed for the Tomcat...but that's the extent of my knowledge about it.

    Those little canard are called glove vanes, they are only on the A varient to help with super sonic flight stability

    Basically, the defining factor of the A variant are the engines with their tendency to compressor stall.
