In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida - Iron Butterfly (R.I.P. Ron Bushy Drum Cover)

- Rest In Peace Ron Bushy! A friend asked me to play this one ... to be honest it’s a song you have to know and listen to if you are drummer.
Now, this is me playing the 17 minute song in one take with all the little imperfections you would expect of someone playing from memory a 17 minute song and only two times!
To be honest, I spent more time on trying to find the right drum kit for this one then playing the song. The drums are featured in a way that they must sound like the muted drums from the 1960s ... so I pulled out the concert toms and played melodies during the solo section.
Now this is mostly a drumless track. Meaning some of the drums leaked through ... nothing I could do about that one. So, I played this one to a click track created with the original drum track ... it moves and I think I did a good job staying with the band, but there are moments!
The solo section was on click too ... now I wish I had chops, but that’s a different matter 😳😁
I think the drums sounds very cool with the reverb! But that’s my sound ... I mean my Gretsch kick and floor tom! The Pearl fiberglass toms really cut through with the clear Remo Ambassador heads!
Anyhow, I did my best on this one! I hope you enjoy my ramblings too! Jump to around 5:00 to hear the solo section ... peace everyone!

I went backwards today ! Nice playing and epic choice to do. To the solo!!!
Someone asked for this one! Crazy … it’s like playing four songs at once! 2 takes … crazy thanks for watching Chad! 😁🤘🏻
It sneaks up on you and is quietly fabulous.
I appreciate your encouragement my friend!
I’m stunned.... what an amazing performance!!!!!! U rock Earl!,
Bryan Corey ... thanks Bryan .... someone asked me to do this one! So I gave it a try! 👍🏻✌🏻🤟🏻🥁👊
The song to wander around the dance floor, wondering what’s going to happen next. ;) Thanks. It’s sinuous.
Thanks for watching Chris … it’s a long journey!
Right on Earl!!
Thanks for the feedback David! 🙏🏻👍🏻🥁😊
Nice job...great tom work...really excellent.
High Number ... thanks for watching my friend! I appreciate the feedback!
My friend big up drummer like 19 good week
LEG-ACY ... thank you my friend! I appreciate the feedback!
My grandma wants me to learn the song for her I like sure I'll learn it and this cover is going to really help me
Thanks! Thanks for watching my friend… I hope you did great!
Watched this this a year ago, see my comments. Kuddos, you still rock it - and still cool 😎
Thanks for watching Sandy! I’m glad you enjoyed it … I’ll look forward to reading you other comment.
Dammmmm!!!!!! Very good!!!!!
Steve Regutis ... thank you Steve! 👍🏻✌🏻🤟🏻
Cool..... I'm surprised you put on this long piece....... But a great drum cover... nice solo Earl... 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
Someone asked me to play it! I only did two passes of this very long song … but if you want this song you have to play the long version! That’s the famous version not the three minute version! Thanks for watching!
Love those open Toms
Marty Boosinger ... thank you Marty! 👍🏻✌🏻🤟🏻🥁👊
Very brave to cover such a long song. But it was always exciting. Epic!!! Great sounded!!!
Drumico .... thanks for the feedback and encouragement! Brave is one way to look at it! 😄👊👍🏻🤟🏻✌🏻🥁
Awesome job Earl!!!! 🤟😈
Mykie -V ... thank you Mykie! I hope all well up there! 🤟🏻✌🏻👍🏻
Wow Earl, I still have the original vinyl and the album sleeve, I was about 17 when the album was released, and that solo, just how I remember it my friend.. dugga dugga dug dug.... dug dug. Great piece of 70's rock, thanks my friend, enjoyed...
Churr Doii Drumma ... thanks for watching! It’s a beast of a song to play because it’s so repetitive and all over the place in the same song! 👍🏻✌🏻🤟🏻🥁👊
You hit the epic button Earl! Been years since I've heard this and you are correct - about any rock drummer had to file this under required listening. Dude - I enjoyed the hell out of this. The tom sound........NICE! Just rich and full but plenty of attack. And when you bring the rimshot in with it, it sounds SO damn good. Anyways, I could comment more but I'll just like and listen to it again tonight. Loved it
Trey B ... thanks Trey! I spent more time on picking and setting up the kit then I did playing the song. To be honest I couldn’t do it more than twice! It’s to much to memorize and nail in one sitting. You know I’m the production team, so it has to be done in full takes or nothing! Thanks for watching it once ... I would be truly honored if you watched it twice! Thanks for the encouragement!
@@earldrum I didn't even think about having to mix and match on the kit Earl! With the range of the song / solo, I should've thought of that. Don't you love not having a team............LOLOL! I fire up the cameras and go "Please work. Please just work". Never fails - one or three will crap out before I'm done....LOL!!!! But, it's the only way to consistently keep content. Everybody knocked off early so I'm on my second pass. This is so f'n kick ass Earl
Trey B ... I understand “hope” the camera works issue too well! It’s funny that there are YT drummers that have a team of people that can film and record their videos! Of course I don’t have a million subs and I’m not a teenage girl! 😳 But I love switching my kit up! It makes me play differently!
Most neighbors would say, "Really, 17 mins of constant drumming! Stop!"
If I was your neighbor I'd say, " Really! 17 mins of fn drumming! Dont Stop! YEAH! 🤘 EPIC cover Hammer EPIC
UziBooBooDooDoo Drum Covers ... I’m blessed my neighbors don’t live close enough to care! But yes 17 minutes ... I could only play it twice ... because it wasn’t going to get much better! Forget perfect! So I said, it’s not perfect, but I can’t do it again! So I mixed it and sync’d it to my video and thought it’s not too bad! So that’s it! Thanks for the kind words Uzi! 👊👍🏻🤟🏻✌🏻🥁
😎 Cool!
Thanks you! 👍🏻
Oh wow😯!!!Earl this is new to me buddy. From min 6:31 to 9:15 just drum solo and again before the end!!! Man you must be exhausted. You did and outstanding performance. Keep Rocking my friend.
Greetings from Texas 👍👍
The Masked Drummer ... I gave it my best two complete takes and said that’s it for me! This is take 2 no edits just my playing! I am play you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
@earldrum Fun fact when they recorded the actual song they did actually two takes. So this makes it as cool as that fact with the original song. Keep the drumming going I like the renditions you threw in there. It just grooves and its a bleeding banger through me Bluetooth (well, I'm using headphones to listen to this as I wrote this lol) :D
Enjoyed your great cover
DRUM ON ... thank you Ronnie! I appreciate your support!
@@earldrum 👍
Solid job, buddy
Thanks for watching Tim! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😊👍🏻🤘🏻🥁
In the Garden of Eden!! Oh yeah! Great song and wonderful playing brother!
Michael ... thank you for watching! I appreciate your feedback! In the Garden ...👊👊👊👊
It’s a three act play: the setup, the solo, then the coda drop in. Nice.
Thanks for the feedback Chris! 😎🙏🏻
...excellent
Thanks for watching and the feedback! 😀
Wonderful. Thanks Earl! 🥁🤙
Claes Isacson ... thank you my friend! 🤟🏻🥁👍🏻
caramba !..... great cover of a great song , I was 15 and I used to hear 20 times a day - now a days Ive been practicing with my drums . thanks a lot to allow me to see how to do it !!!
Thanks for watching Luis! I appreciate the feedback! 🤘🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
its Hammer time: )
Midnight Raiin ... thank you my friend! 👍🏻✌🏻🤟🏻🥁👊
WOW!!! I LOVE IT!!! I absolutely love these drums. I'm a huge fan of concert toms. I have a set of Quadra Plus from the 70's that I've been recording with. This has to be my Favorite video that you've done so far! Keep up the great work and keep those videos coming. Thank You Earl!!!
Jerry Mckenna ... thank you Jerry! This was the only kit set up that made sense for this song! I’m glad I kept the drums and bought the new heads. Thanks for watching!
great job bro.
Thanks for the feedback
Ok, look this is a classic. You cannot make it your own. Sorry. I memorized every stick stroke when I was 12. I'm now 68 and play the entire 17 mins a few times a year. This is one you gotta get down right, my man. Certainly a worthy attempt. Looking forward to a re post.
Bob thanks for watching! Learning every stick stoke on a three minute song is quite difficult sometimes! I’m so happy you did that when you were young and have that solo memorized! I’d love to see it if you record yourself playing it! I have songs from my childhood where I memorized the drum solo like Chicago’s Make Me Smile … I know it note for note … so I understand the request! I love to put this song on sometimes to hear Ron Bushy’s great drumming on this take! But to be honest a friend asked me to play this one … I played it through two times … got the basic groove and muddled through the solo! I never thought 9k people would view it! Learning a 17 minutes song note for note in one take is probably not going to happen again! I don’t have a production team, recording engineer to start and stop the track to get it just right. Nope, I don’t see that happening! But thanks for watching and your comment is noted!
@@earldrum well, then. I am quite impressed! You know what they say about books? Same applies to music. So much music to play, so little time!
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Play long....and prosper....and may you continue to be inspired by all the great drummers!
Be well, fellow percussionist!
@@bobd4083 thanks for understanding Bob! You are right it takes time to get some songs right. I appreciate your honest feedback! Thanks!
Classic 🙌 love it👌
Dieter Hobson ... thank you my friend! 👊🤟🏻✌🏻👍🏻
Look at the Kit , right out of the 70s ! Love it !
Billy Nolan ... thank you my friend... yes, the kit made this cover! 👍🏻🤟🏻✌🏻🥁
Love the solo section!!! Drums sound awesome man!!
Little Drummer Channel ... thank you Jerimy! This is one of those request videos ... I tried to have fun with it and play what I heard and remembered about the classic solo!
Wonderful! I have not tried covering this one for years.
Richard Burton ... thanks for the kind words! I only had two takes in me! This was take two!
Only you Earl would tackle that beast. Bravo
B Noble ... yes, I’m crazy enough to give this one a try! It was a challenge to play, but I fun trying ... thanks for watching! 👍🏻🤟🏻✌🏻👊
Hello Earl... I love that solo !!! 🤩🤩
Excellent drum cover and fantastic performance !!! 😎🙋🏻♂️🥁🥢
LIKE# 12+1👍 to encourage 14...
Paco Drums ... thank you Paco! I appreciate your support and feedback! ✌🏻👍🏻🤟🏻🥁👊👊
Amazing job Earl! My dad introduced this song to me when I was a kid :)
AR Drummer ... every drummer dad does that to their kids! I did that too! 👊👍🏻🤟🏻✌🏻
That solo was smooth, good work
Drink a Beer and Play a Game ... thank you for the feedback and encouragement! 👍🏻✌🏻🤟🏻🥁🥁🥁👊
I know the song didn't realize it's 17 minutes now that's a long song!! I assume thier might be a shorter radio version? Those sweeps from the mounted toms to the floor tom and snare are cool!! And I like how at around 12:40 you just explode and it sounds all huge!! Very cool cover Earl!! Big like and respect from me!!
Zax Drums ... yes 17 minutes! It’s one take, I know it could be better, but I couldn’t play it a third time 😳 ... thanks for watching Zax!
❤️🥁❤️
Deep cut!
Great job Earl!
Did you carve YOUR first set of sticks like Ron Bushy claimed to have?
😉
Jay Klein ... I’m not as old as Ron Bushy! Thanks funny 😁 No, but drum sticks used to be $1.50 a pair!
This is an incredible performance Earl. That solo is stunning and how you kept it so tight throughout the song is amazing. I've probably typed too many words now to say I'm speechless but I am and this is absolutely magnificent.
I decided earlier this evening to upload three covers and I'll upload a few more throughout the week just to get a start on my new channel but after that it'll be infrequent as I don't want to get too bogged down again.
Andrew ... thank you for your encouragement and feedback! I am humbled my friend and glad you enjoyed it! I look forward to seeing your covers. By the way, was it just the pressure to post videos that shut your channel down (if I can ask ... if not no problem)? I was wondering where you went my friend! I look forward to hearing and seeing your covers!
@@earldrum it was a combination of posting, answering comments and watching countless videos. It was taking up a lot of my time and there was never a proper break from it. This time I'll be nowhere near as active as I don't want to get burnout again. Thanks for asking brother.
Andrew, I hear you ... I don’t watch or comment as much as I used to. Making videos for me is just fun ... have gone to usually one camera, occasionally two like this video. I really spend no more than an hour or so on the video recording and usually the editing too. I take my weekends and just drum and enjoy myself! I’m playing at church and recording and playing a few projects presently. All this keeps my mind on other parts of life ... but youtube may seem important but it’s not. It’s the people that are important in life. I’m glad your back my friend! Have fun and enjoy life. No stress to comment on every video! I appreciate you! Rock on my friend!
@@earldrum thanks brother. God bless you.
Way to go Earl!! Great tune man...you are killing it! Have a great week man!!
Little Drummer Channel ... have a great week as well Jerimy!
Sorry, nice try but go back and watch Ron! Not even close brother but one of the best I've seen. You have to do this solo with what Ron was working with, snare off, two floor Tom's, two on the rack and a base. So strip that down and do it right! Gunny
GySgt USMC Disabled Veteran
Drummer; Pillars of Freedom
Thanks for watching Larry … I didn’t even try to copy or learn Ron’s solo! I spent less then one hour playing this song maybe three times. That’s all I had … it’s me playing along to the record as I did when I was 17 years old!
Not quite. Keep working on it. It's a well played spin off but it's missing far too much from the original solo.
Thanks for watching! I have no interest in playing the drum solo note for note! I don’t think Ron Bushy ever played it note for either! But I’d love to hear your version of this song. By the way SINA, and her production team have a note for note version! By the way, I played this song two times from top to bottom that was it with a few stops and starts! I rarely spend more than one hour on a song, this was done under one hour! This was done as a request for a friend! 🙏🏻
Toda la canción excelente pero el solo de verdad fue espantoso :/
Thanks for the feedback Roberto! 👍🏻😎✌🏻🙏🏻
YOUR NOT REALLY THAT GOOD maybe u should start doing SALADS???????
I can see you don’t like me, my weight, or my drumming. That’s fine dude. I decided to delete your stupid comment and not to engage with a drunk dude at 6 AM the first time. I’m glad you watched a 11 more minutes of this 17 minute song! For the record, I’m sure you can’t play a simple drum groove … if you could you wouldn’t criticize a drummer who clearly can play better than you! Put out a drum cover of any song and prove your a great drummer or go to bed dude!
