I'm a postal employee that was hired in 5/1997 as a PTF city carrier. I since (2007) am a SSDA (clerk) after an interstate transfer. Postal employees earn 4 hrs sick leave per pay period (104hrs annually). Years of service do not change this rate. Annual leave starts at 4 hrs earned per pay, then jumps to 6 hrs after 3 years of service then 8 hrs ppp after 15 yrs. Sick leave is not paid out in lump sums at retirement. Only Annual leave. Unused sick leave is added to your years of service with any remaining balance. If possible, a retiring employee should deplete all sick leave rather than use it to add the service time, because using it allows the employee to continue earning it (4hrs/pp) and annual leave continues to increase. The employees end up at nearly the same finish line, with the "user" getting another 4 hrs SL while they begin to deplete the still growing balance. Because it bumps the Annual and sick as the employee stays on the rolls using the sick time the balance AL increases every week. On retirement, the cash out check for unused AL could be significantly higher depending on how many months saved sick leave they go out on "sick" Annuity (pension) is earned at the rate of 1% of your highest annual salary average (high 3years) multiplied by the years of service. Employees who begin collecting their pension past age 60, get 1.1% of the pension calculations. So a 25 year employee that has a high average of $100,000.00 per year (right! just for easy math) would get an annuity (pension) of $25,000 per year. (25 X 1%/year X 100,000.00.) full pension retirement based on MRA (min retirement age) 30yrs at age 56 (used to be 55) 10yrs service at age 60, 5 years service at age 65. Social security can be looked up as the website for estimates, and federal employees who complete 30 years of service can receive a supplement from their social security before reaching the minimum age to collect at 62. Thrift Savings (the postal 401k) has matched funding from USPS up to 3% when the employee's contribution is at least that much. So a postal employee that puts 5% of their base salary (not overtime) gets a net deposit of 8% each pay into the Thrift. I have 23+ years of service with USPS and will attempt to deplete all 10 months of sick time beginning 8/30/2021 giving me 25 years service for my pension

Wow that sick leave will make me rich😂 at my present job I took one day off and I have been there for eight years! My boss has to tell me to take my sick days.
The insurance is complex. It's so complex I had to sit in a class for like 4-6 hours after I converted to career and have the benefits explained to me and I still didn't understand all of it. I will say it's the best insurance on the market compared to any non government job. You will not find any better insurance, you just won't. It's really really good insurance.
Big bruh..they don’t cash you out for sick leave only annual. If you don’t use your sick leave you lose it. I’ve been with the post office for 6.5 years. You give a lot of good info other than that, respect 💯
I stand corrected... I was at a retirement seminar im gonna attend .. soon. I skip em all the time.. cuz they are very confusing.. 😒. But thank you.. I am pinning your comment up at the top cuz they need to know. I appreciate ya!
Provisions of the Civil Service Retirement Act provide for the granting of credit for unused sick leave in calculating retirement or survivor annuity at the time of an employee’s retirement or death (see 562.4). Each 8 hours of sick leave represents 1 day of retirement credit. Unused sick leave days are converted to calendar time retirement credit, based on a 260-day work year (260 days x 8 hours = 2,080 hours). Previously, there were no provisions for credit of sick leave upon retirement for employees under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), except for those who were in the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) and transferred to FERS. See 580, Federal Employee Retirement System, for details for credit of sick leave upon retirement for FERS employees who formerly were covered by CSRS. Enacted in 2009, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 (Public Law 111-84) changed this. FERS employees will receive credit for unused sick leave in the same manner as CSRS employees. The change will be phased in, as follows: (a) 50 percent of accrued sick leave hours will be credited for all FERS retirements commencing October 28, 2009, through December 31, 2013; and (b) 100 percent of the accrued sick leave hours will be credited for all FERS retirements that begin on or after January 1, 2014.
They add unused sick leave to your years of service example if you have 29 yrs of service and 2000 hrs of unused sick leave and retire your pension will be 30 yrs of service
I am married with 4 children a few with special needs one of which is autistic. I currently work as a amazon delivery driver and in the hiring process of usps. Just did my fingerprints and I applied for a CCA. I'm 36 and my goal is to buy my family a home and live comfortably and retire with some vacations in between such as disneyworld. Right now at Amazon we are independently contracted through and 1099 and we don't get 40 hours and make between 16.50 to 19.50. I love what I do but I need stability and a career and make sure my family is taken care of. When I went downtown for my fingerprints I was told turnover was bad due to these young kids not wanting to work and also even though it's legal go out at lunch and smoke. It's a darn shame. But my question is can all this happen for me and my family at usps? I do have some health problems so I'm definitely excited about that. But nothing that can keep me away from the job
Jay I’m in thousands of dollars in debt. I’m 38 could I possibly knock out a nice chunk of my debt working here. I messed up a lot with student loans and medical bills and going on almost 40 I need to at least secure something before it’s too late. I want to live the later part of my years better thank the first part. I have some goals I want to accomplish give back to my parents. Is it possible to get my credit right? Thanks Jay❤️
Can I ask a question from the outside looking in? What if two USPS employees are married, does each have to have single insurance, or does one waive and one has family coverage? Is there a benefit in making a certain choice? I am interested in my own mind compared to some other careers.
The downside to the vacation and sick leave being paid out to you is it will be heavily taxed. Also it is very hard to accumulate vacation leave as a PSE,CCA or MHA because you are on a 360 day term and you are essentially let go and rehired every year so your vacation time gets paid out during that time. Since only career employees get sick leave it could be a few years before you worry about sick leave.
Not hard.. To accumulate leave as a pse.. Only if u call out alot. It accumulates to about 90 plus hours a year. But i believe i was clear about the benefits .. which is the main focus
You should be a cup half full type of guy vs a cup half empty .. Optomism.. vs pes.. We are gonna be taxed reguardless.. And not HEAVILY... Its just .. taxed.. normal.. taxes. You earn money.. n it gets taxed.. Kinda how it goes here in America. 😉
@@MrFinesse316 A lot of people will look at the paycheck and be surprised. It counts as income tax so the income you get taxed will likely not taxed like a bonus but people are surprised when they see the massive tax on it.
@@ericlivingston8027 Whats quite interesting though.. is EVERY job that has a payout of ANY kind... Is taxed. The 80 hours on your 5 day break.. is just like having a regular check.. Taxed. No different. Alot of people are aware of that. If you get a bonus at work.. its different. This is just accumulated vaca time. Sick leave etc.. Or.. Many work jobs.. that dont have that at all.. Waitresses.. cell phone store clerks.. chefs etc. The moment you work for a major company. . . You will be taxed.. Period. Even if u win the lotto. So no.. its not a downside. Its life. . TAXES.. DEATH.. AND TRAFFIC .. IS ALWAYS GUARANTEED IN LIFE. 🤣

Don't be silly my dude nobody keep their sick leave we use it all the time. And if by retirement you still have sick leave available most ppl use it all before calling quits
My mom actually got a nice return after she retired from sick leave alone and we are talking some grands my mom worked hard at our downtown post office put in 21 years. Only time my mom left work was when my brother passed away she was out for a month. My mom has been retire for a little over a year now from there she is still living partly off her sick time alone. My mom is also frugal doesn’t have any bills and owns her home. Her and my dad never have to work again my dad retired after 20 something years working as a custodian for one of the school districts where we live he also got a nice check after he retired from his job again in the thousands there are actually people who don’t use up all their sick time.
Dude, the USPS is a joke anymore. Unless you are working as a new employee on career status in a large office like in the city then you are probably ok. If you are in a smaller office, part of POD and not a career employee, it is a joke....a bad joke. It is nearly impossible to come across a career job these days unless someone is getting ready to retire or has died, then the job might get filled but the person who has been a PSA the longest gets first dibs and that person probably has been waiting for at least 4-5 years, the least, I say again. After a year as a PSA then you qualify for benefits but not the federal TSP so you are squandering away years that could could be pension years waiting to get on career status and there is no guarantee you will ever get on career status unless you are offered a job at an office that most likely will not be your first, second or third choice, usually some crappy one no one else wants which was my experience. I know a guy who waited for 16 years to get the clerk job he wanted. The USPS these days is trying their best to prevent people from getting carrier status and keep everyone part time which means for the PSA's a never ending crazy work schedule at different offices, different days off mostly based on short notice weekly schedules and those days off are always split with shifts that vary from 2 hours up to 10 hours depending what you are doing. Amazon has made most clerk and Carrier jobs a living hell between the thousands of spurs and parcels that flow in 7 days a week. The attitude of most employees is beyond disgruntled and throughout my time at the USPS all everyone seemed to care about was retiring. Management communication was terrible, call-off's were frequent, carriers, clerks and the maintenance people did not get along. I was spoken to in ways by other high sonority employees who would have been suspended without pay or terminated in most private sector work places, just for doing my job the way I was trained but not to their liking because "that's the way we did it 30 years ago....blah blah blah". The union filed so many grievances almost daily that I doubt management addressed half of them and most were over small frivolous matters that could have been fixed on the spot. If you are a disabled Veteran, like me, don't expect any kind of special treatment in acquiring a career job, the union could care less about that, your disability rating might help you get your foot in the door but it won't help at all in securing a career job and the only thing your disabled status gets you is just a way for the USPS to show the Fed that they hire disabled Vets. And speaking of military time, you can only buy back 5 years of service to apply to your pension now so if you were a Lifer or had say, 12 years in and you think you will be able to buy back all those years to apply to your pension, you not getting it, 5 years and that's it. But remember, you have to be on career status to qualify for that. I never worked as a carrier, I was asked if I was interested in a part time carrier position but their career path was the same as the clerks, work as a part timer, all different cities, all different routes, all different days off, last minute schedule changes and wait forever to get a carrier job. Plus the carrier call-off were much more frequent so you always planned on getting that morning call from the carrier supervisor asking you to come in on your day off. Hence the reason why all the part time carriers got 40+ hours per week, not because they were scheduled for it in the first place. My best advice to anyone looking at a postal career is; If you are offered a FULL TIME, CAREER JOB, then accept it. If you are offered anything less, regardless if they tell you it will "soon" turn into a career job, don't accept it and find work elsewhere. I knew a lot of people, including myself, who were fed that line of B.S. about career jobs opening soon and if you just take a part time job it won't last long. B.S. The best day of career with the USPS was the day I turned in my badge and time card and walked out the door. .
@@MrFinesse316 I know my opinion is all negative and I am truly glad there are USPS employees who are happy with their work, jobs and the people they are in contact with. Unfortunately for me I was working for a poorly ran POD and the management not only created but accepted the toxic environment they, I feel, had created. I hope you have a fruitful career, continue to enjoy your work and retire comfortably on your USPS pension. A lot of career employees deserve good treatment because I did see a lot of dedicated hard working people but the problem was the cancerous ones and the poor management who overshadowed them. I'm back in the private sector again and actually enjoying coming to work, making more money and working normal hours but I get some strange looks from people when they find out I actually quit the USPS. My better judgement has forced me to keep my mouth shut about the environment because the general public and customers don't need to know what actually goes on there and bad mouthing the local main office just makes the good postal employees look bad. Good Luck to you sir, I can tell you are one of the good ones and if more people had an upbeat positive attitude like yours's I had worked with, I would probably still be there. .

Facts get in and show what type of worker you are and that will determine what you will make basically hard work pays off
Thanks J. Motivation 💪
Big bruh..they don’t cash you out for sick leave only annual. If you don’t use your sick leave you lose it. I’ve been with the post office for 6.5 years. You give a lot of good info other than that, respect 💯

They dont cash it...They credit it.. I knew we got something for it .. just didnt know how to word it.
Can I ask a question from the outside looking in? What if two USPS employees are married, does each have to have single insurance, or does one waive and one has family coverage? Is there a benefit in making a certain choice? I am interested in my own mind compared to some other careers.
you can both have individual insurance
The downside to the vacation and sick leave being paid out to you is it will be heavily taxed. Also it is very hard to accumulate vacation leave as a PSE,CCA or MHA because you are on a 360 day term and you are essentially let go and rehired every year so your vacation time gets paid out during that time. Since only career employees get sick leave it could be a few years before you worry about sick leave.
Not hard.. To accumulate leave as a pse..
Only if u call out alot.
It accumulates to about 90 plus hours a year.
But i believe i was clear about the benefits .. which is the main focus

Exactly! Thank you. Not everyone is wasteful and have no ethics when it comes to work.
I just emailed please respond
B.S. The best day of career with the USPS was the day I turned in my badge and time card and walked out the door. .
You are entitled to an opinion.
Good Luck to you sir, I can tell you are one of the good ones and if more people had an upbeat positive attitude like yours's I had worked with, I would probably still be there. .
