I totally screwed up the title of this track several times lol It's Lonely is the Word NOT "world". Glad I caught it somewhere during the reaction.
This album is a metal masterpiece.
Iommi does the almost perfect marriage of Heavy Metal and Blues. In my opinion better than anyone else.
Just such a cool vibe all the way through.....haunting.....almost a ballad ,almost a rocker......unique. Shows off the musicianship in Sabbath like no other song.
No other song touches my heart as deeply as this one. I could melt into a river of tears almost every time. All the love kept inside... Searching for it's expression, meeting no reception in the world...
I think this song is about suicide and existentialism. "The traveler" in this context is someone who is just about commit suicide because he is nothing to lose ("Hang your head", "I'm leaving very soon", "Life's a losing game", "It's the only road I know"). He is also feeling existential about life: "higher than stardust", "I used to count in millions then. But now I only count in one". Referring that he comes from countless star dust and will again return to star dust after passing away. That's just my interpretation though
I always thought the background keyboards during Iommi's solo at 8:04 sounded VERY similar to the background keyboards used at the tail end of Page's solo in Stairway to Heaven.
That solo damn, my favorite from Iommi
Gotta get onto the next album 'Mob Rules'. Some great tracks there!
What a song! Tony's best work in this track. As for the lyrics i think its more a spirotual thing where he left the earth behind and spiritually am able to travel all across the cosmos but hes the only and is all alone
Three sabbath’s and an elf.
Lonely is the word. What is the word? Lonely.
Think this song is Ronnie writing how he felt when left Rainbow. He had no were to go and take my hand. Is him as loney traveller. black sabbath take his hand. Higher than stardust when he was in Rainbow. Then he’s gone to zero when he left.
This is the one that resonates with me.
this is the only Black Sabbath Album that has both Bill ward on Drums and Ronnie James Dio on Vocals its what makes this Album
While I don't think Mob Rules is quite as good as this, it does contain my favorite Sabbath track of any era; Voodoo. And controversial opinion: Dehumanizer is the best Sabbath album. Glad you are discovering the magic of the DIO era.
I hear it as a song about misfits and social castaways, artists and vagabonds who have no clan or social standing and no concern for such trivial things, loners follow their own path and are not actually lonely, it is society telling them they should feel lonely, Ronnie tells us this thinking is wrong and we should strive to forge our own individual paths, as lonely as they may be
Great album review!
Are you bouncing back to Priest next, or going somewhere else?
one more album then back to Priest
Very very bluesy
This is Tony Iommi's comfortably numb. Not open to debate.
I got confused, too, on word/world, not having had the album. Do you think the Word is a spiritual meaning, like Jesus or God?
Could be given the album is heaven and hell but I didn't see it that way
Lonely is the word. Not world.
