Btw just wanted to point out.. the RAM popping up when you move the clips isn't an Apple specific thing. Basically all laptops with removable RAM modules do exactly the same thing lol
But oh Apple fanboys don't know anything else besides MacBooks iBooks and so on. They think Apple invented everything first and others copied from Apple.
I don't think it's fanboyism, just lack of experience

I had the same issue with my 2012 13 1278 MacBook Pro. The upper slot is through hole soldered and the bottom slot is BGA soldered. The BGA solder balls are known to crack. I was able to fix mine with some flux and a heat gun. Make sure you put tinfoil around the slot so it doesn't get melted by the heat gun. Only the balls should be exposed to the heat gun. It can take up to three minutes of heating to reflow the balls. The logic board is designed to absorb heat. You will need to remove the cpu heatsink, speaker and the Sticker with the serial number. Let the board cool for at least 10 minutes before reinstalling.
You're a life saver! Just tried this on my old clunker Mac which has a RAM issue. Followed your trial and error method and it looks like the bottom slot is a bit damaged. Have taken RAM out've that one and voila! I can now get all my docs off it. Phew. Keep up the good word Ken!
Glad it worked!
Thank you so much! I’m usually good at figuring out tech issues.. replaced my HD no problem. But when my Mac wouldn’t start up and just beeped at me I had no idea what to do! All I was doing was looking up quilting fabrics (yep.. 29 year old super quilter (: needless to say my Mac is now back up and running and I’m ordering fabrics again! The same solution worked for me, only using the top slot. Thanks so much!
Thank you! Thought my old MBP was toast, but I got her running again thanks to your video!
FINALLY a video that explains how to fix this. Been holding onto mine for 2 years without knowing how to fix. Funny that it was as simple as "remove bottom RAM" lol. Anyway, THANK YOU
Man, this is the first I've heard of this failure mode for these machines. I know some older PowerBook G4's had dodgy RAM slots, but not this. A bummer, but at least now I know whenever I go to invest in one of these used what I may be up against.
Usually the bottom Port is the one that goes. I use one 8gb stick on the top. It's slow but it'll work
But it's OK to pay that "little" extra for something you know will just work...Oooops.
Awesome! Finally here early. Love your show, Ken!
I have this MacbookPro mid-2012 for a while and yesterday I decided to repair it by myself after 2 reparation places told me it's impossible because it's the mother board (and the cost of repairing it it's bigger than the laptop).
So I started looking and looking... and I knew it's the RAM somehow, but man... this video...
Thank you so so much! Now it works!!!!!
It was as well the bottom ram slot!
Hi, thank you for the video. Very well explained. I am seeing the same with my 2013 MacBook Pro Retina display. Do you have a solution for the same?
During this quarantine I worked on my Mac (I had this issue for over a year). Looks like the logic board cracks sometimes internally (by loads of moving it, weight, etc) and the pins start failing. I took it to the "Genius" bar and they told me it was worth nothing. I worked on it a little bit and finally made it work, however if I move it it happens again. I haven't tried the one ram approach but will do it. P.S. In some angles (Horizontal Scree, vertical Keyboard) it runs nice and smooth
I love how ken doesn't care how long a vid takes to get out
Yes "licks fingers"
everything that the MacBook did from the kernel panic to the flickering black lines to the three beeps is exactly what happened on my 2010 iMac today
I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro that I use every day and runs 24/7
the only issues I've had with hardware was the fan bearing dying and my MagSafe literally melting and giving me a burn
maybe the "runs 24/7" part has something to do with the RAM slot still being fine because the heat makes the solder able to move around slightly and not break off or something?
Sooooo I have a 2011 mbp and I have installed 16 gb of ram on it. I have never had a problem with the 16 gb even though there should not be that much. Anyway, I also used the dosdude’s patcher for catalina. 6 months go buy and I am using it as a daily driver because I am a high school/ college student. All of a sudden the screen gets messed up and starts beeping the same way. I have upgraded my MacBook Pro to its highest specks and I am not sure what could be happening. Could it be that my Mac is not regulating the ram and letting it get full? I am thinking it does not regulate the ram and then will panic if there is not enough. Pls someone help me
I did the same thing one day earlier before I watch your video....boom it works ....happy at last I found the same thing in you tube what I have done ...many said change your logic board ...any way thanks dude,,,
Krazy Ken definitely knows how to create a moment of suspense
So the fix is using only top slot? Would it be okay to buy a larger ram and use in top slot?
my cousin also has wonky RAM in her mid-2010 MacBook Pro
it only recognises 2GB of RAM, and the GPU likes to just stop working at random if not in safe mode (because safe mode uses software rendering)
I swapped the RAM sticks out and it didn't help
I have a 2011 MBP 13" and i'm now terrified this is going to happen to me, I mean, my logic board also has corrosion because the previous owner spilled something on it, but now I have a second thing to worry about... yay
love your videos keep up the good work ken
I had the same issue with my old MacBook Pro Late 2008.
I need help install serrria on my MacBook 2011
I have a refurbished 13 inch Mid 2012 MBP that I got from Marietta College and both RAM slots are still intact.
Had a 2013 MBP die on my friend this week. Messed with it for quite a while, and it ended up dying even more. At this point it just chimes and sits on a black screen. Every attempt to reinstall an OS for some reason made the computer reboot 3 minutes in. Weird stuff.
Scares me a bit since I have a 2012 MacBook Pro. I’m hoping it might actually not have this issue for right now since I have an upgraded model. (not sure if from apple or other people).
My old Macbook (mid-2007) had a bad RAM slot and I didn't have the know-how or interest to repair something on the motherboard so instead of having 4GB of RAM with 2 2GB dims I just old had 2GB of RAM with 1 2GB dim
I removed the pressure pad which is explained at 12:36.. that pad had the shape of my ram which told me that there is a lot of pressure to the ram. in other videos i saw people installing credit cards under the lower slot to lift it up. so removing this thing could be the trick- for now its working fine with 2x 8gb ram
Watching now! Saw the rough cut so hope to see something new.
Mac Yak this was fun with animation but had a Mac but disk drive wasn’t co operating
How much deitatewed wam is needed to server?
I was playing with my 2009 MacBook Unibody, and I noticed something about this video. The Crucial RAM you bought was DDR3L, a fully compatible, but less power hungry version of DDR3. MacBooks really do not like this type of RAM. I have several DDR3L sticks in a collection, and when I got my MacBook with only 2 GB of RAM, I tried to upgrade it with these DDR3L sticks, and got a 3 beep and 5 sec pause POST error. That might be the reason why the green Crucial RAM never worked. Even if it was the RAM pin issue, it would be highly likely if the crucial ram would have never worked at all.
I have issues with my working ASUS ROG G73SW Since it has flickering blue pixels because it has video problems... I’m sure it needs some fix. 😔
My mid 2012 mbp did the same thing. I put a piece of folded paper between the ram slots and never had a problem again
@@goysb4jays566 yes, occasionally I’ll have to reseat it. But I don’t use that computer as much as I used to. But since it’s working again it’s my backup computer
I have a mack book uni body from 2010, i was poking around and opening stuff up, when i pulled out the ram. Later that day i booted it up and it started beeping. Realised it was because the ram wasnt pushed all the way in
I had this on my Mid 2012 like 7 months ago. One out of two of my 4GB RAM Sticks burned out, so I had to take out only of the RAM sticks that was corrupted/broken. It runs perfectly fine on 4GB of total ram now, although I can spend like £40 to get the 8GB ram sticks upgrade. It's nothing to be worried about.
It was a 2011 model of the MacBook Pro (The eject button is removed when Apple removed the disk drive in the later model and replace it with the power button)
Hey, I'm just wondering... is it ok to use only 2gb of RAM on top slot? I can't go outside because of the COVID-19. Can somebody tell me the pros and cons using only 2gb of RAM in my 2012 Macbook Pro
FYI (I'm not that into techs)
It’s just gonna be really slow
why you don't make pram reset or nvram reset
may can fix.
Help I have a 2009 MacBook Pro and recently the touchpad started to get jumpy with the mouse cursor.
Either liquid damage or a swollen battery pushing on the underside of the trackpad making it wonky
Keep the vids up!
This was really helpful, and thanks to the guys who originally documented this pretty ridiculous defect from Apple with a stupid high price tag, that is guaranteed to fail around the time the warranty expires
Found this very interesting, just sold on my Macbook 2012 because of this very issue! If I carried it around or moved it, it would show artifacts, freeze and restart. Tried all sorts to fix the slots but eventually gave up!
Yeah... it’s a nasty defect.
@@ComputerClan Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome. More to come. : )
What is typically the "good" slot for RAM in the mid 2012's? Top slot or bottom? Or does this just depend?
Macintosh POST errors
New World Macs (1999 - Onward)
3 beeps: No good banks
Intel-based Macs
3 short beeps repeating every 5 seconds: Incompatible RAM types
Same thing happened to my 2011 17” MBP. I just bought a single 8GB stick for the top slot. Interesting that it seems to be a common problem
It hit the 17-inch too? Dang...
My 13' has the same problem. Fixed it with an old credit card cut to small pieces an putted them onderneath the ram slots so all the pins made contact
Harold... Maybe out of the same call center all the "This is Harold from Windows. I am the calling because we detected a viruses on your own computer." calls come from.
i have that issue and im fixing it today maybe because the ram did not fit snugluy
In any system that java memory slots 3 bips equals to ram problems
so I ended up her because I have a similar issue with my Air... not the same thought,it boots and runs.. but at random I get similar bars all across there screen, mine aren't black, mine are all random colours. it freezes, shuts down and sometimes boots back up on its own, and sometimes not... I read that it could be the logic board... that's really scary-
If you were to sell your MacintoshTV?, how much would you sell it for?
Got the same model and error. I mean it works with a single slot. I learned my lesson with apple stuff back then.
You know it's an ancient MacBook when the CPU, RAM, and storage aren't *all* soldered to the motherboard.
I had this problem on my mid 2009 MacBook Pro I replaced the ram and the ssd and the hard drive it did not help in the end I just bought a new MacBook Pro
This happened to my old white iBook G3. That was super fun. Then I got my aluminum PowerBook G4, I fucking loved that thing.
I have a laptop just like this model, just some context it works
I once pulled a 4gb ram out of my dell laptop and put it in my mid 2012 mbp and it came out exactly like that. At that time I almost sh*t myself. I put the original 2gb ram back in and it's suddenly ok. The thing is the 4gb ram is still OK and works fine on the Dell. Now I'm scared of buying a new 8gb ram for the mbp. Any ideas? Thanks
Love the Blues emblem!!!!!
wtf , thats beeps in 1:02 , i thnk my mbp is failure again with same issue
huft
Macs have different beeping patterns depending on what fails in the POST. In the case of the one shown in the video, it was RAM or RAM slot failure.
Should have sent it to Louis Rossman
I'm writing this comment in the exact same model of Macbook Pro that appears in this video and I've never had any issues with RAM, even after upgrading to 8GB!

is it weird that I have gskill 1600mhz 8gb ram stick on my MacBook?
Why would that be weird?
I have a 2010 model, exact same thing... bottom slot not allowing to boot... stuck with 4gb... pissed
pfft
imagine being stuck with 2GB because the computer can't recognise more than 2GB, no matter if you have one 2GB stick inserted (like it should) or two 2GB sticks inserted
and both RAM slots seem to work fine
I just switched out my RAM for my 2012 MB Pro non-retina and this stuff happens? Did I just dodge a bullet..?
Not sure. This issue doesn't relate to the RAM modules. The issue is the RAM pins on the board.
Oh God. That Hannah Montana in the intro 😭
Your intro is insanely good
Thank you : )
CJ Scratch Torres solves the issue by reinforcing with a stiff plastic card like you mentioned in the video. Check out his video instead.
Okay, I’m having this same issue right now (actually have had it for about 3 years)
Thats clearly a piece of abstract art
You would think apple would design the computers to detect if one ram slot isnt working and only use the other, maybe pop up a message saying “please check your ram”

Are the pins repairable?
Yes. They can be scraped and re-soldered. Jay may take on this computer and repair it.
I know i saw when you put the finger to the bars and the firnger was seeing like i was edited
I changed the RAM but still have the black bars what do I do?
The pins on the board are probably bad. They will need to be soldered or you can get a new board.
@@ComputerClan Yes I finished the video all they way through and left one stick in the top slot only and it works now, thank you for the video. Also would you think its worth it to buy an 8gb ram stick to put in the one slot that works
So no flux and pencil thin soldering iron or hot air rework? This is clearly a solder reflow job.

Lol same! Don’t feel bad about it. Think I might be helping my dad build a Raspberry Pi
"pretty standard stuff, you got the hard *drave* , your battery and your electronics..."
Would this affect the 2009 models?
yes
MacBook Pros 2012 13" had problems with the RAM slot, MacBook Pros 2012 15” had problems with the graphics chip. Apple had done a great job again. And when you complained to Apple about your macBook, they installed the same hardware crap again.
You forgot to unplug the battery, Krazy Ken!
it says dont unplug battery :(
you're supposed to leave it in
I remember when I was a kid I would always have 2 pieces of paper and made a paper MacBook
Apple certified RAM is just like saying certified pre-owner cars are somehow better than regular RAM or different. Not really SODIMM DDRxL non-ecc is the same across all systems. I use “PC only” RAM all the time for Mac upgrades and it works just fine
Those checkered flags on the screen are giving me seizures.
wow im early, if only I could watch it right now
I’ll keep it warm for you.
@@ComputerClan i think its a gpu issue
@@bloctans_4 it’s not.
3 beeps every 5 seconds means the RAM did not pass an integrity check, as in the memory might be unstable.
Lol that’s why when laptop running and take ram out it’s fun looking
Ha ha I'm working on a 2012 macbook pro and this is exactly the same issues
I was actually positive it was not the RAM sticks' fault, considering the weird patterns on screen. I've never seen a RAM stick that shows partial signs of life. In my (admittedly limited) experience, I've seen nothing like that, only darn dead RAM you could not boot with, or perfectly working RAM.
