Also the key to the 33 is to back off the treble and gain on your amp and increase the bass. The pedal then does a killer job of compressing and tightening up everything to sound amazing.

Hello. I've got Precision Drive and I can add to the discussion. I always felt that tubescreamer style pedals were very limited with their capabilities. I've always had the tone knob all the way up, drive knob all the way down and volume tweaked somewhere in the middle (and still didn't get that bite I was looking for). Fortin to me is also very limited. It sounds very good, but at the end of a day it's just a fixed eq boost (and pretty expensive one). PD, I think, has the best capabilities to tweak the tone to your needs. Don't base your purchase on a sound sample from YT video, you may get a general idea how the pedal sounds like but that's all. Very good video, cheers.
Totally agree with your sentiment on not buying just because of a YT video. I've said it in a handful of videos cautioning people to not just buy something they see in a video (including mine). These videos are fun for me to make and share, but at the end of the day they are just an example of how a pedal can sound with my playing, my specific signal chain, my specific mixing, and pushed through all the YT compression, and then played through your phone, computer, headphones or whatever else you're watching these videos on. Thanks for watching man!
Thanks Igor, just ordered a clone for 50€s, you sound like a very intelligent guy, I have been in a search for more drive with my strat neck pup without sounding muddy...( maybe Impossible), and Im not so heavysolo keen as im 57 soon, but this Precision ped seems sumthing? So this Precision D ( Demonfx ) is kinda a compromise to try out if it kills my bluesyjazzy strat or not...!🕶🕶
The Fortin 33 kinda reminded me of an SD-1 style overdrive with how much it tightens up that low end. I've been using SD-1 style pedals in front of my amps for a while and i'm surprised that i don't see as many people using it as much as the OD808. I've always felt as if the SD-1 and pedals like the 33 make you heard in a mix a lot easier than tube screamer pedals, yet Tube Screamers do a very good job at maintaining the natural tone of the amp while tightening up your pickups enough to be able to sound tight and consistent.
I always thought tube screamers are "intended" to be used with boomier amps like dual recs or slo100 in modern conventional use. I think they're almost redundant in front of a 5150 style amp as it is almost exactly what the amp does. Coincidence? Probably not.
@@shadow105720 they sound really good on the rhythm channels of the 5150 amplifiers, i'm personally not a fan of the lead channel on those amps myself, as i feel the rhythm channels on both the peavey iterations, as well as the 6505 and the EVH 5150's rhythm channels sound miles better than their lead channels. That's just me though, and you might get better results using different pedals to boost the lead channel. I usually wind up using the lead channel as an actual lead channel so that i don't have to use a clean boost in the FX Loop, but using a clean boost in the loop to make your solos shine more gets you some pretty cool results as well, and can even be used on the lead channel if you dig the tone coming from that channel more than the rhythm channel.
The OD808 is just a killer pedal all around. The Precision Drive sounded too muddled, almost like it couldn't handle with the open C section of the song...that 33 pedal though. Lol. I like that metallic sound, simply because it sounds like Meshuggah. Great vid!

The Maxon sounded good, a little thick on the bass but not muddy. The PD seemed the most well rounded and tightest. The 33 might need you to tune down another step or two lol
sick video dude! i have to ask, does the Precision Drive act like a boost pedal and not just an overdrive? ive barely used many pedals in my 15 years of playing believe it or not, so im a noob just getting real into it, but i have a Randall Diavlo RD100 and it desperately needs a boost, im torn between the Precision Drive and a good ol OD808 just because everyone praises the OD808 so much for getting the job done.. i have a Boss Metalcore pedal, and a Horizon Devices Apex Preamp, and then an SD1, but when i try using them they completely overload my amp.. i wanna lean more towards the Precision Drive because of the modern touch and the options it gives, but wanted to ask first.. cheers dude, great stuff on your channel
It's an overdrive pedal so it can be used as both an OD or a boost (just keep the drive at zero and you have a boost). It's a fantastic pedal, but not cheap. You can get some similar tones out of other pedals that are worth checking out. I know you said you have an SD-1 but you can get an SD-1 to sound like the factory settings of a PD. I made a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/xfqK44mK3eU/v-deo.html Also if your ODs/boosts are overloading your amp it's likely to do with hot pickups and too much gain on your amp, gotta dial the gain back on your amp and let the pedals push the amp. Thanks for watching!
I think for the style of music you are playing in this video the fortin cuts the best in the mix. Tonally for me the maxon was my favorite. I like the amount of low end it keeps in the tone vs the other 2. It is worth noting though that fortin just released a mini 33 which is about 199 usd and tonally is pretty much the same as the big brother.
The Fortin cuts really well for percussive and rhythmic chug parts. I find for big, open chord progressions it’s a bit harsh. Overall the Maxon is probably my favourite pedal across a variety of amps. It pairs well with almost anything. Thanks for watching!
Shit maybe the Maxon, the Pdrive is full too! The 33 I feel might be better paired with a recto. I have owned the Pdrive, grind and am currently using the buxom boost. I have the synergy app system so I feel I need a variety of overdrive pedals! Might get a Maxon
@@jonathanstubbsguitar5340 Right? I'll be honest, I don't like how the 33 feels in the room all the time (if that makes sense) - it can be harsh and too aggressive if not set just right...but recorded in a mix there's nothing like it. But all around, that Maxon is the shit. It's just such a solid pedal for the money. Having both the 33 and a Maxon or PD is a great set up, use either where needed and where each shines. Thanks for watching!
Just got a Precision Drive and I'm pretty meh on it. I preffered the Fortin type stuff for this kinda stuff. And right now I have a Highwind Direwolf, J Rockett Rockaway, and SD 805 I each preffered over the PD. It just makes my amps sound more artificial (EVH el34, PRS Archon, Mesa TC)
I do know what you mean about the PD, it does have a bit of an artificial sound in certain applications. I like it more for low tuned stuff, it works well for percussive type djenty bits, but generally speaking there are other ODs that sound a lot more organic. I'm working on a shootout between the PD and a Plumes right now and you can really hear the difference that an more open and organic OD has compared to the PD. Thanks for watching!
The way i hear it: Maxon - my baseline... sounds good; Precision Drive - Slightly tighter than the Maxon, but almost the same; Fortin 33 - Trebly as hell (in a good way)

I’m on the same path for choosing an overdrive pedal for my Mesa Single Rec 50 w solo head. Recommendations and is it preferred to run the od pedal in front of the amp or through the effects loop? Thanks in advance
Really depends on your style of playing, but generally speaking with a Recto I like an OD808, it's just great all around. But a EQD Plumes is also a great buy considering the money. Boss SD-1 is also a no brainer. Pairs well with pretty much any amp, costs like $50 and sounds just as good as pedals that cost 5 times the price. I always put my ODs in front. Thanks for watching!
@@ScottBynoe thanks Scott. I typically run a GE7 eq or my my mxr 10 band eq through the effects loop. Gives the tone some added punch while on the gain channel without too much saturation.

Totally. They each have their own character and purpose. I have a bunch of overdrives and I find some just work better with certain amps, certain pickups, and certain tunings. Thanks for watching!
With the right riffs and the right application nothing really cuts quite like the 33. I like it for percussive and rhythmic type stuff. It falls apart for me a bit with big open chords, I feel like it looses clarity and gets a bit muddy, but when you get into the chugs it's a great pedal. Thanks for watching!
just bought (for 50€s) the Demon FX Prec Drive, to use just normally as a drive ( hopefully with gain and definition...): only PETE THORN has demoed the Prec Drive with a strat and to a clean amp! these countless "boost" demoes do abs nothing for me: who needs a boost pedal for heavey meth???? if im right Ill get some more out of my strat bluesy/jazzy/drivy tone ( thats what PRECISION would imply!) if wrong, the pedal would add nuthing but sterileness to my lovely tones, ha! Ill wait pacefully for the clone, cause I have a HUNCH that it could help precise-taylor my tone furtherfartehermore, DIG IT? I also have OVERDRIVE pedals not overdriving too much , so am I using them as a BOOST???? as in an episode of the Jeeves: BOOST for Birdsburg!🕶🕶🕶🕶🕶🕶
Hey thanks for checking out the video and your suggestion. These pedals are frequently used in front of overdriven amps as I’ve demoed. In fact the 33 and PD are specifically designed for this purpose, so doing a demo in front of a clean amp wouldn’t actually serve the purpose of why most buy these pedals. Also, if you listen on headphones or good speakers there is a very noticeable difference in sound between the three. Thanks for watching.
No offence Daniel Sinclair but that would make no sense. These pedals are made for high gain and overdriven amps......shootout with a clean tone would be like demoing a guitar with no strings....lol.....what's the point? Can def hear the diff between these pedals, especially the 33....
@@ScottBynoe Thanks for your reply, I'm currently looking at purchasing a PD so while doing research I'm looking to hear what this pedal has to offer and it's key features. So I'm interested to see what it does to the tone and what the applications are for this pedal. Since the PD works like a boost/gain/noise filter I'd like to see how it drives the gain section of an amp. I'd like to know if the PD is going to play nice with the rest of the rig (7-10 other pedals). Upon listening again with my studio monitors the difference between the pedals is so nuanced it's hard to tell if the PD is doing anything different at all. For example, your Maxon808 is basically a tube screamer and I know how a TS808 sounds. The tone between the Maxon and PD is indistinguishable so it has me wondering if I should just stick with the TS808 or save up for a 5150 (or get my ears checked). I removed my thumbs down (I was just being grouchy in the morning) thanks for the video.
@@peteryanick9238 I understand metal dudes can hear the nuanced difference between the various hi-gain distortions. Running hi-gain into hi-gain just seems redundant if not detrimental to the tone. As I've said in my reply to Mr. Bynoe it has me wondering if I should just stick with my TS808 or save up for a 5150 rather than shell out for a PD if it doesn't really do anything diffrent.
@@MODIAK Hey thanks for the change of heart and the response, appreciate it. I don't make any money by doing these videos, and I do them for fun and to share my love for this stuff, so if you find it even a little informative/helpful/entertaining that is great. As for the TS vs the Maxon you'd have really similar pedals between the two. In terms of the "upgrading" to a PD it's hard to say if it's worth it depending on your setup. The built in noise gate of the PD is a nice to have, and it does have a bit more flexibility in terms of the tweaking the tone. I purposely set the Maxon and the PD to sound as close as possible to prove the point that you can actually get a really similar tone from both pedals (but you can get the PD to sound fairly different than I have it set - has a lot more gain, boost and brightness than I'm using). With that said, I am planning on doing a bit of a deeper dive and demo into each of these pedals on their own in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for that if you're into it.

It falls apart for me a bit with big open chords, I feel like it looses clarity and gets a bit muddy, but when you get into the chugs it's a great pedal. Thanks for watching!
Fortin
Fortin Hexdrive is killer as well.
Need to get my hands on one of those. I haven’t had a chance to try one yet!
just bought (for 50€s) the Demon FX Prec Drive, to use just normally as a drive ( hopefully with gain and definition...):
only PETE THORN has demoed the Prec Drive with a strat and to a clean amp!
these countless "boost" demoes do abs nothing for me: who needs a boost pedal for heavey meth????
if im right Ill get some more out of my strat bluesy/jazzy/drivy tone ( thats what PRECISION would imply!) if wrong, the pedal would add nuthing but sterileness to my lovely tones, ha!
I have BOOST in my ZOOM G2, and my beloved EQ peds called Fender Engager BOOST( A great engager thou Im not married! and a perfect quick EQ!)
HD Nano Attack is better than all
All hear is 5150. Maybe try shooting out with a clean amp tone.
