  • Judy Collins visits with Joan Rivers in this November 1990 TV broadcast of Joan's daytime talk show. Judy discusses her status as one of the "survivors" of the music business, and also promotes her new CBS Records CD, "Fires of Eden." You can watch her performance of the CD title track on a separate clip here on my Judy Collins UA-cam channel

This is a very beautiful interview. It looks like it began to sew a seed of a very important friendship between these two amazing woman. Judy is eloquent and describes where she came from and her life thus far beautifully. Joan Rivers lost her husband to suicide on May 15, 1987. It would be just 14 months later from this interview in November 1990 that Judy's own son would also take his own life in January 1992. The fact they talk about each being "survivors" takes on even more relevance given the future. It was Joan herself that phoned Judy after her son's passing and persuaded Judy to keep working. I think her support was a great gift to Judy healing from such tragedy. God bless Joan and Judy forever.

Joan was such a great interviewer. Natural, genuinely engaged and so conversational as if speaking to a girlfriend in a cafe.

It seems like such an odd combination - Joan and Judy - but they make it work. Joan asked some interesting questions, and Judy gave thoughtful answers.
