Thank you for this video. Thought I had a bad shifter. Pulled the cover and the cable is not moving. Pulled the cable out and it is broken about the point it enters the bike frame. Saved me some money there. Great video.
I may not comment but always appreciate your vids. I've a few bikes with either r8000 and r8020 shifters and more than a few occasions this has occurred mainly to the left front mechanic shifter. Once or twice its been due to frayed cable but I've lost approx three shifters unable to shift up to the big ring and lock out and unable to rotate the lever, the bikes are kept clean and correctly lubed after each ride and the levers have been sprayed with light lubricant. I've been told it's a known design flaw, which unfortunately gets restrictively bad and irreparable just out of warranty time and have had to find £300plus for each replacement.
Thanks for creating your video and showing me how to remove that bottom cover to get more access to the ratchetting part. My cable end broke there and the ratchet system on the right shifter for the rear derailer jammed up on me. Of course it was in the highest gear so, I thought in the lever it was in the hardest gear. Once I pulled off the bottom coverof the shifter, I found my missing broken cable and it was the culprit why my shifter locked up on me. I appeciate you making the video for us! 🙂
Thanks, i didn't know about the inspection cover - opened it up and voila, the end of an old cable was still in there. Took it out and now shifting up again :)
Very good instructions, I have used your examples every time if I am in a difficult repair or one that I seldom do your detailed perfect instructions with all the details that the repair enjoyable and systematically easy and successfully working when I am done. Thanks
Thanks for this great video. It saved my day. Not sure what happened. The end of the cable just got loose and stuck, but it looked okay. So I just put it back, and it worked again. I need to replace the cable, but as a quick fix, it works for now.
Sometimes the cause is wear on the lever support - it means the up ratchet doesnt move out of the way of the pawl in time. You can check by putting something around a mm thick between the suport and the lever and trying to shif up. If it works then you can replace the lever support or add thickness to the old one by using e.g. a piece of thin plastic. I had a left dura ace lever do exactly this, fixed it with a dab of epoxy and a bit of black 1mm plastic sheet.
Thanks, very clear instructions. I have this issue but on the rear derailleur / right shifters. So will go ahead and inspect the cable and replace if necessary.
I had a similar situation with a stiff shifting front D and it was a cable housing that was to blame. The wires had shifted and it was no longer a clean cut at the end. After replacing with new housing it was much better instantly. The problem can really only be friction in the cables or something really wrong with the cable attachment point, to the point where the lever arm would be much shorter than it should be.
Hi, your videos on 105 have been superb but I have run into a problem: the recess part into which the cable end goes in the hood has dropped a few mm into the shifter body. When I put a new cable in and pull it tight, the head of the cable snags and won't shift (LHS/front derailleur. Any way I can re-rotate the part into which the cable head sits so the cable head fits where it should? Many thanks.
Back the question.. Why do you think the non-frayed cable was not working.?I have he same problem even with a non-worn new cable. Shift, a bit rough, but shifts fine without tension. Thanks
Nice vid! At 8:18, for your left shifter, when you thread the cable in, there is this metallic cable catcher. Is there a same cable catcher on the Right Shifter too? I realise my Right Shifter is missing this component and been experiencing the same issue you mentioned about no gear engagement.. thx!
@@FreeToCycle thanks. It’s my Summer bike stored Nov to May. Do you think that in storage the cable tension front mech should be on in large ring or in the small. Good question. I’ve seen question asked before think answer always been. No difference. Wonder if there is one.
My shifter works when I take that cover off but once it's back on it doesn't shift. Edit: Nevermind, a generous dose of WD40 and spraying with grease helped.

As always, THE place to go for the most comprehensive maintenance videos. Thanks once again! Brilliant!

It's funny how I sometimes working on my bike I hear your accent in my head! Inspiring channel🎉!

I fixed mine by putting a flat Lego piece on the back of the lever support black plastic thingy
@@epizzoli6104 hi, do you have a picture of that ?
Thank you for such a good clear demonstration 😊
Nice, after stripping down my Ultegra shifter after I broke a cable all seems to be working. Thanks!!!

Replace the outer cable housing. If you can’t see an issue elsewhere!
How is the bike THAT clean? I clean mine pretty well, but that looks like the whole thing went in an ultrasonic tank. I need to up my game.

Same for the right hand shifter!
@@FreeToCycle thanks!!
I owe you a beer if I am ever in your area
This happened today to my R9100 left STi, what was it on this , obviously the cable, but why was existing non frayed cable not working !? Thanks
Replace outer cable housing and lube front derailleur pivot points!

Leave on the inner chainring, the cable is under tension if left on the outer chainring.

How much gears does this bike have?
my left hand lever is very stiff to move up - was like that from new and is no better after a professional service.
I've had 2 that were like that, no idea why!
I have this problem with my rear derailleur, but when I press the small button and then the larger one, the larger one suddenly shifts.
Great idea doing it at first without the chain..................
My shifter works when I take that cover off but once it's back on it doesn't shift.

Since I moved over to di2 maintenance free 😊
Yeah, gee that's very helpful to know. Not really keen on the need to charge
I have both, and the Di2 is far more hassle free, but if it breaks, wow it's expensive, especially if it's a Di2 hydraulic lever.
