Am I the only one who doesn't have a bird but still can't wait for the next video to come?! I love how you show us all how to respect the animals that are in our lives. I am a better parent to my dog now. I have a great respect for this channel.
I don't have a bird. I had horses for about 25 years and trained a few. I like watching these videos because I see training mechanisms, here, that might have been adapted to training horses, if I had ever had the brains to think of it. I think these videos help us think about *why* the specific training works, and that, in turn, helps us better see things from the animal's point of view.
I think Indian Ring Necks, have the most adorable, cutest voices and behaviour's of the Bird's in the Parrot family? How could this adorable, Birds, family not want him? So, sad... 😪
Its pretty easy =( When somebody buys them for their speech, their cuteness and such, and find out that some wont talk as much, or flies 'too much' or something they don't expect, they can't understand why they're not like they see on the internet =(
I dont have the time (or make the time) to watch all the videos. But when I saw the title I was confused because I thought this was a project/hired situation by the owners. And seeing the comment makes me think she recently officially acquired him as her own (?) As a result of owners giving him up? I do want a add a couple things though... Maybe they wanted a better life for him? Some people (especially if they can't stop biting or realize they don't have the time to train) just want better for their furry or feathered little friend. I have been in that situation despite knowing what to do. It isnt nice knowing I would be judged harshly if that was the case.

I think she meant that she had 3 months to make him a trained bird that was highly desired and wanted by ALL humans, as he hadn’t been trained before
I can understand why the owners got frustrated. I have my IRN from 12 years and he is very intelligent and attention seeking. There needs to be at least one person playing around with him else he starts shouting. We actually studied his behaviour and figured out ways to calm him down. Got some complex toys to keep him occupied. Also, he is not comfortable with human touch so sometimes we get bitten when trying to pet his head. Any other part of body is absolutely no touchy. A lot of people lack this much dedication or simply doesn't have enough time to spend with them as much as they require.
Aw, what a sweet bird! I've been living with an African Grey named Smokey for almost 31 years now, and I just have to show her how to do something once or twice and she learns almost immediately just by watching me. I bought her some foraging toys and it takes me at least 5 times longer to fill them than it takes her to get the treats out, lol.
I have grown to love birds.. and honestly.. I have my depression to thank for that. About 3 months ago I found myself wanting to care for something to make me feel important.. and after reading about Budgies.. I couldn’t stop thinking about getting one. So my family and I went out and found a young Budgie. I named him Edwin. I have always been a dog lady.. so training animals is something I really love.. and learning how to train Edwin has been so much fun. We have built so much trust in each other and he recently started giving me kisses! It was such a great feeling of success! His flight training has gone well so I have moved his cage to a bigger room to keep working on distance. He’s so young still so I’m really excited to watch our relationship grow and continue to bond. As long as everything continues to go well between Edwin and I .. I plan on getting another parrot of some sorts in the future. But not until Edwin and I are completely ready! I don’t want to loose focus on him.. but I honestly can’t wait to see what other bird friends make their way into our family. Thanks for all of your tips! It’s been nice to see how different all the parrots are and what works for some and not for others.
Jamie you are so intelligent. It never ceases to amaze me your ability to understand animals and train them. You’re a master of conditioning! Every psych teacher should use you as an example in class lol
It's so interesting how individual birds are so different. My GCC thrives on excited praise and gets distracted by food treats, and determined to steal the treats rather than do the training. When training we don't always give good treat for each good action. We'll say "good boy!" Then randomly he'll get a food treat and when the session is finished.
I haven't watched your channel for a while, but I'm really chuffed to see touché again, (on the other hand I thought he was rehomed so it's also a shame to see him back!) I love his little language!
My lovebird and I were watching this together and when he heard the clicker he got REALLY animated. I thought he was just curious but every time you clicked he got excited and started looking around. Apparently he wanted to train. Aren't parrots fabulous? And yes, we took a short break to practice touch training and spins on a new surface.
Well, here is something funny: About 10 years ago, someone thought it was a good idea to set 4 of these birds free in a park in Amsterdam..... the population now is estimated to be around 20,000. I live 20 minutes drive from Amsterdam and I have during the winter sometimes more then 10 of them in my small garden coming to eat my bird seeds and apples (that I put there for them...)
She was training him to focus on the task at hand.. the blue string. If she rewarded for the yellow, it would confuse and prolong the training. I felt bad for a moment too, but the training was focused on getting the basics completed first. She communicated with Touché properly. Next step, the next color, etc.
PLEASE HELP US! Just rescued 20 yr old female ringeck. Was left in cage for the last 3-4 yrs no bird or human interaction other than feedings and when the grandmother would talk to her and take her out. Granddaughter was terrified of her and said Beabea the ringneck was "nasty" and had attacked her before. I can tell its fear aggression. When we went close to her cage she immediately backed away and has not tried to bite any if us since being here.. I can feed her with my hands. After she takes it she backs away and eats it. Shes loves all food. Especially corn. When we got her home she was receptive to target training however its only been done in her cage as she isnt clipped and its a new layout and I dont want her to get hurt or hurt anyone else. I dont know her body language or cues good enough yet. I dont want to miss something and her hurt someone bc i didnt see it soon enough. Shes been through enough and deserves to be free of her cage. She was in a 3footx18x18 cage with no toys and dirty bc they were to scared to clean it. It was rediculous! I immediately got her a flight cage which she is so much happier in. I can tell she is a wonderful bird she just needs the right ppl and help environment to grow and flourish. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you❤ Edit to add.** She is desensitized to so much, loud noises, kids, animals and it dont take long for her to investigate new toys and perches. which is probably due to her age which is a guess bc they didnt know for sure. Just that they had her around 15 yrs and she wasn't a baby when they got her. She also had a mate but she killed him. She does seem bird aggressive. I also noticed most of her back is bare with only down feathers closer to her bum and on her sides. Its only on her back. Not sure if its plucking as there is no feathers in her cage since being here and no other bald spots. I see her preen her back and rub aggressively with her head. Almost like she is irritated. We unfortunately had a hit financially and used our savings for vet care for our other rescues and to get the last two rescues home. She will be going one way or another and sooner than later. She needs to be seen as I don't think she has ever been to a vet before. I couldn't leave her. So many ppl wanted her but. Think they just wanted to sell her as she was free. Shes a wonderful bird and I know with patience, time and love she will be able to enjoy her last years and not in a dirty cage, all alone with nothing! 😢
I can't believe people would buy a bird and just leave it in the cage for the rest of their lives. Thank you for saving her and also I'm pretty sure it's no doubt that it's plucking as she's been along 15 years with no time out the cage and no interaction.

I went to a bird rescue/store today to see what they have for feed, toys, and products. There were so many birds needing re-homing. People really need to research and take the time to decide what type of bird they are suited to and realize that they are taking on a responsibility that can last decades. I’m not suited to large birds as They freak me out and I don’t like the noise or mess they leave. I love smaller birds.

Should I feed this birb with fruits/vegetables? So here is the situation I'm in - I'm supposed to take care of the birb for a month while my sister is out of town, and usualy she feeds him various seeds but I noticed he stops yelling (which he does A LOT, like a donkey from hell) if I 'bribe' him with cucumbers, apples, cherries, various berries or even watermelon. 😄
He did so well! I wish there had been something like this in the 1990s when I had my Cockatiel. I think he would have loved this! Really cool to watch. 🦜
Hmm. I wonder if all birds are as cautious about object that have a different orientation than that which they are used to. I suppose it makes some sense. Objects that can change orientations could be dangerous in the wild. Though, one would expect other animals to show a similar fear. I don't recall my cat ever being cautious of objects that had their orientations changed. In fact, if anything she was often curious about them. Perhaps it's a prey/hunter dichotomy. Prey animals tend to be much more captious of nearly everything. Hunter animals, less so.

Unrelated to the video but are budgies good starter birds for 2 responsible kids/pre-teens and an adult? My brother has been wanting a bird and my mom thinks it’s a good idea so i’ve been doing some research on them and their care and I just want to know because some people say they are and some people say they aren’t.
I’ve never had to train my bird to use or play with a toy. Just put it in their cage and they will do it on their own automatically, usually right away
I have loads of wild Alexandrine Parakeets where i live ( Some are really big, more than 50 cm's from head to tail ). They fly freely through the city and through feeding i can get them on my balkony and feed them but not by hand. Is there a trick to get wild parakeets even closer ? Would love if i can feed them by hand.

Unfortunately my birds are now so triggered by the sound of the clicker mostly because I spent all of this time and energy teaching them to associate the sound of the clicker with being rewarded with treats that when they hear it and don’t get a treat they get upset. So because I’m a renter and live in a place that has hollow doors that aren’t able to be completely sound-proofed, they’ll hear me clicking for a different bird and the other bird will get upset that he’s not getting a treat. I don’t know what to do. Now as soon as I bring out the stick and click maybe 3 times it seems to piss off my birds and cause them anxiety I’ve basically abandoned target stick and clicker training because of how upset they get after just a few minutes
New, Aussie mum who bought her first one yesterday. He’s only 12 weeks old. What foods are best? I know I need to get syringes to feed the mushed up pellets but anything else? And how often do they feed? Sorry…..Alexandrine

Vegetables should be a part of his normal diet, and fruits are great as treats. Just don't give too many sweet things.
I was going to say just how many pine nuts can he eat when Jamie says she was breaking them in half.

Objects that can change orientations could be dangerous in the wild. Though, one would expect other animals to show a similar fear. I don't recall my cat ever being cautious of objects that had their orientations changed. In fact, if anything she was often curious about them.
Perhaps it's a prey/hunter dichotomy. Prey animals tend to be much more captious of nearly everything. Hunter animals, less so.

It's a chopstick. Just a plain old chopstick like you get at a Chinese restaurant.

Unrelated to the video but are budgies good starter birds for 2 responsible kids/pre-teens and an adult? My brother has been wanting a bird and my mom thinks it’s a good idea so i’ve been doing some research on them and their care and I just want to know because some people say they are and some people say they aren’t.

I’ve never had to train my bird to use or play with a toy. Just put it in their cage and they will do it on their own automatically, usually right away
I have loads of wild Alexandrine Parakeets where i live ( Some are really big, more than 50 cm's from head to tail ). They fly freely through the city and through feeding i can get them on my balkony and feed them but not by hand. Is there a trick to get wild parakeets even closer ? Would love if i can feed them by hand.

Unfortunately my birds are now so triggered by the sound of the clicker mostly because I spent all of this time and energy teaching them to associate the sound of the clicker with being rewarded with treats that when they hear it and don’t get a treat they get upset. So because I’m a renter and live in a place that has hollow doors that aren’t able to be completely sound-proofed, they’ll hear me clicking for a different bird and the other bird will get upset that he’s not getting a treat. I don’t know what to do. Now as soon as I bring out the stick and click maybe 3 times it seems to piss off my birds and cause them anxiety
I’ve basically abandoned target stick and clicker training because of how upset they get after just a few minutes
You could have different toned clickers for each bird. (You'd have to abandon your current clicker as all of your birds are used to that click sound)
