My boss has one. All she saw was BMW, SUV and sporty. I don’t think she even test drove it. Trunk is too low with hatchback to be as usable as a normal SUV and suspension is harsh. That said, as Mr Geese notes, it is a fun car to drive on a windy road between 40 and 70 in manual mode
You might have a point when it comes to certain cars but not all or even most. Many people actually do research before they spend 45K. If they don't on their first car they WILL on the other ones 😂 So I give this a partially true 🤔

It's crazy, i just don't get why people buy these. Almost every Coupe Crossover looks worse than the original SUV. Even though i don't like SUV's to begin with i'd rather buy an X3 than this.
Sports Activity Coupes are the official vehicles of adult babies who still haven’t learned that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. “I want a coupe, but I also want 4 doors and a hatch. I also want SUV ride height, but sports car handling. Finally, I want sports car power, but econo car efficiency.” You end up with a car that does none of those things well.
Very well said and if i may add something, i need something more for my 60 grand car as well and that is reliability and quality and i ve never had these at any BMW i ve owned or i ve driven before.
You might be overestimating the mechanical/vehicle dynamic knowledge of these buyers. My internet analysis of these buyers is that the thinking goes like this: "I've made it in this world and it's time I got a BMW to let everyone know. Hmmm, what's this big car? 'X4.' It's bigger than that other car and the same price! That little car is so dumb. Give me the big one. 8 year finance? Sure. Vroom!"
@@DassRoc You must have been living under a rock for the past decade or so since SUVs are the largest selling automotive segment. As such, there are lots of buyers who want different things, from large SUVs for families, to compact ones, to those who like even this X4, all with different tastes in design.
I love the styling of these crossovers like the X6, X4, GLC Coupe, GLE Coupe. It’s odd and it’s mission is not about the functionality. It’s about the style. If you want the full functionality then buy the X3 and let stylish people buy the X4. I like anything odd looking so I’m one of those people who like this car. It’s perfect for what I would want it for. I don’t plan of having lots of kids, I don’t drive around with lots of friends, i don’t put lots of crap in the trunk, I don’t like big SUVs, I like cars but a car with a bit more presence like this odd looking X4 is exactly what someone like me would drive.

JUST GIVE ME A DAMN WAGON. This is just as miserable as the 3 and 5 series GT's. BMW has the 5 series sedan and a 6 series coupe/gran coupe which are both appealing in their own rights, but then they said what about a 5 series coupe/fastback? And it's horrible. Who asked for it? What purpose or void does it fill? BMW appears to have a director for each number series and they all want their own lineups. 3 series- sedan/M, wagon, gt and SUV. 4 series- coupe/gran coupe/M, convertible and SAC. There are far too many models in their current lineup and most are stepping on each other's feet. Just head over to their website and you'll see what I mean. And nearly $58k for this... this thing?? Nope.
One thing that's always bugged me is that no car manufacturer matches the vehicle colour on the infotainment system to the vehicle its fitted to. Always looks like you're adjusting the settings on someone else's car. How difficult is it to code that in?

The X4 is that weird Uncle in the family that changed his name to Janine and eats only asparagus at thanksgiving dinners so that their pee smells weird in other people's bathrooms. But still annoyingly fun to drive. Epic vid. And beautiful drone shots in this one.
I agree, the X4 is strange at best. A sort of out of proportion hunchback. What isn’t weird, however, are these reviews! Keep up these kick-ass reviews @savagegeese I haven’t watched a video yet that I didn’t agree with.
Video cannot show how beautiful this X4 is. Go to dealership and check this car, nice style and shape better than X5,X6. BMW never disappoint you about their performance
hot take: I like the look of the X4. Unless they lean in to their boxy nature (ie: merc g wagen, jeep wrangler, etc...) most suvs just look awful. These suv coupes at least inject a bit of flare and style into the segment

You're 34 years old, unmarried, and still working on your marketing degree while snapping photos for your mom "when you have the time." You date a guy unironically named Chad who takes city jobs and has a "voicemail box that is full." Chad is looking to get promoted and has been brown nosing for the last six years at the Austell water authority. Your excuse for yelling at the bartender at the community college watering hole is "you have chronic depression" which was triggered when he ignored you momentarily while serving the cuter, younger girl at the other end of the bar. You haul ass in your BMW X4 afterward, and you don't care if you get pulled over; your mother taught you it was okay to yell at and demean law enforcement because your dad still pays the tickets.
Anyone buying this over a 5 series estate/wagon needs taking out back and shooting. The 5 estate starts from £4K less, is faster, more economical, looks worlds better, handles better, and for most people/objects has more passenger/cargo space. And you’re getting an E segment platform instead of a bastardised D segment one.
Very good review as always, but your "identity crisis" theme, with all due respect, merely means that you just don't get this vehicle. The problem is your lack of understanding it, not its identity. For zillions of other people, there is no confusion about its identity. You're overthinking it and trying to fit it into a preexisting category in your mind that isn't there. Every car does not need to be a sports car and raised up. When I need cargo capacity are use my parents minivan. It’s comfortable and it ridesNice over there of rough roads because I’m not trying to look 3 feet off the ground and I’m not gonna take it to a road course.
The X4 and X6 are worthless and pointless as a concept. They are fugly, it is to heavy and high for a coupe so it doesn't handle has well as equivalent 5 or 3 series sedan or is it as fast, it is not as spacious as the equivalente X3 or 5, it is not an off roader and I bet it also spends more gas than an equivalente Sedan. No point. Worst part about this idea? Mercedes went after it and copied the freaking ugly car.
I think the motor has been overly hampered with boost by gear, it should pull harder in the lower gears. I heave the European version in my 2 series and for how powerful it feels in 3rd, it should feel far more savage in first but it’s not, it just revs out smoothly but a little slower than one would expect. However where I have a manual and far less weight than this car, in sport mode, even in comfort if you give it the revs it will absolutely launch and launch harder than the NA straight 6 cars.
I had the X3 35i, with 300hp, and it was fantastic except for the initial start off like you mention. Consensus on forums is that BMW “softens” the launch via tuning/software and has done this on many different models. Otherwise I would avoid the 4cyl on the suvs as a rule, it’s just too much weight. Buy the 6 turbo and you’ll enjoy it far better.
You should have reviewed the X4 M40i. It’s got all the options, power and adjustments you need. I’ve driven this car, Macan, evoque, fpace and the BMW is the best all round. Throw on the 21” wheels and it looks fantastic.
Whenever I see this on the road, I'm always more Careful. You have to be a certain kind of person to get one of these. Great review though :) I too find it difficult to put my eyes on it
I came here after watching the Ford Edge ST video. As ugly as the BMW is, it provides a good perspective of how optimistic Ford is being with their similarly priced Edge.
I know everyone has done one by now, but can you PLEASE review the M40i versions of the X3 and X4? I want to hear your opinions on those enhanced (albeit still not fully M) trim levels. I want to know if those trims are better and worth the upgrade.
I'm sure this comment is going to be buried and not seen by Mr Geese, but his explanation of BMW variable ratio steering is incorrect (or at least misleading). The ratio increases as you go further from center, so that you get the on-center feel of a low ratio but with only two full turns lock to lock. It gives you the best of both worlds for high speed driving and car park maneuvers. The explanation was over simplified however its a two part system using a variable gear and also electronic assistance from the EPS which is how the different drive modes effect effort. The steering is far less reactive in comfort mode vs sport due to the assistance and the ratio does change based on wheel angle. Although BMW does not state percentages in any materials.
13:33 - Torque launching will rapidly increase ATF temps which will shorten the life of your transmission even if the clutch stall speed is around 2,000-2,500 RPM. Do not torque lunch your vehicle! Get a proper V6 if getting off the line fast is your main concern/objective.
It all depends on what sort of budget you have to work with. I have purchased used, out of warranty BMW and MB vehicles at prices too low to turn down. I can tell you that in doing so you are going to have to bite the bullet and pony up for the things that do go wrong. AND there will be things that do go wrong, even with that I would still buy a used BMW or MB again without question. My 2006 BMW M6 (bought it about 5 years ago), purchased the vehicle for about $18k, and I have had to fix a few minor issues. However since the original purchase price (about $100k) is so far beyond what I actually paid for the car, I am ok with having to pay a "premium" to own the car. I get to enjoy a vehicle that would have been out of my price range...originally. Even with the added expense for repairs, it is still not "crazy" expensive to own the car. Reason I think this is, even "budget" brands charge so much for repairs now a days, owning a use "High Line" car is still a reasonable option. Of course you would have to purchase the used vehicle for a price that makes any future repairs doable. It's the depreciation on vehicles like BMW and MB that make them a viable option for someone that wants an upscale vehicle, but who would not have been able to afford to purchase one new. This "debate" would not be possible if the BMW or MB vehicles held their value, it is only through their incredible depreciation that you could even make this argument, as I have here.
At 3:45 and 15:47 - do the front dome lights remind you of a certain superhero? Maybe a friendly, neighborhood BMW. I'm one of those people that actually like these vehicles because they are different. However, I would prefer the X6M because it looks more unusual. Yeah, I'm weird.
In my opinion this is the best infotainment in the business. Physical controls for everything use on a daily basis and there is the screen for redundancy. Very nice interior and I like the integration of the analog dials and digital display.
As a Honda Crosstour Owner, this is probably one of the few cars I'd replace it with... I don't know about this version (2019), but the current 2023 version is 1 inch wider, 2 inches taller, and 10 inches shorter... The shorter I don't think will be a deal breaker for a wagon lover, but I'm sure it'll make it much more fun to drive.
Bmw vehicles spend way more time in the shop than on the road, they are endless money pits, over excessive use of plastic materials that require replacement parts.
I tend to agree with you. The funny thing is, they can't make enough of the X Drive vehicles. It's been over five years since I've been to the SC Plant but I do know that they have not stopped plant expansions since they open in 1994. And hiring is constant. So, people are buying them. We were told that every vehicle has an owner waiting for it. Personally, It's not for me for just the reasons you stated. But, I'm glad they are SO popular.
Charlie Zellner yes they are selling like hot bread, even the older ones are still getting purchased, I do believe once a driver gets into bmw they are hooked permanently, simply because the performance is very addictive, however the materials being used are not safe for long term operation, I’ve had coolant hose leaking literally break off from the heat, and such wear and tear damage could lead to further damages if it’s not detected right away, it’s a lot of discrepancies, and inconvenience with these vehicles, but they get drivers hooked.

Calvin Chann Bmw is probably the brand that leads with multiple models it’s to the point other brands are copying whatever model does well in sales, I think certain models need to have everything replaced once it gets to 100k miles even at 50k parts are failing, some models are reliable, and some are less, I don’t think they have any economical models in their lineup, everything is pretty much a money pit.
He's saying there is an issue with merging into traffic in 55-65 MPH roads in this car... I daily drive in the same type of traffic in my 1995 stick shift pickup.. about 120HP. We get so spoiled with modern vehicles. lol

dammit, every add is giving me a playback error and on other videos too. This started about 2-3 days ago and is incredibly frustrating. If you tell me to remove my ad blocker, hell no; in fact, it will make me want to add more anti-tracking, garbage blocking do-dads. That front lower ball joint arm looks expensive when it needs to be replaced. Now, as far as the X4 goes (and X6), it can drive off a cliff foo all i care. Sure, it may be a good car, but it has too many compromises. Worse yet, the way the door window trim comes together at the A-pillar really annoys me and just throws the whole car off, more than the car itself. Hey BMW, just give us back the (GREAT) 3 & 5 series WAGONS and if you must, add a trim that jacks the suspension up like the Outback and/or Alltrack/Allroad.

When I was growing up , we always knew what kind of engine was under the hood. And BMWs used to designate the motor with the second and third digits of their model designation. Now, they're sticking 4 cylinders in everything, and most buyers don't have any idea nor do they care. Which makes them morons. 4-cylinder turbos suck in comparison to a nice normally aspirated V6 , anybody who says differently again is a moron. They really should have given you a M40i with the inline 6 turbo, bigger brakes, and adaptive suspension. That kinda solves your criticisms of the lack of power off the line and the "too hard" suspension for daily use. Of course, you sacrifice your wallet to fix those issues.
If you want practicality, safety and speed, get a Volvo V60 T4 R-design , or any car like that, not this abomination. You will compromise from ride height but you will get more stylish and safer car for less money.
I had an X4. I was disappointed; it was a brute to drive. I sold it and bought a Mazda 6 wagon. It would outperform the x4; it has more storage and is cheaper to run than the X4. I think the X4 is a waste of money.
The BMW X series is an SUV/coupe mix, just like the Mercedes GLE coupe. It's an ugly car and I assume designers were aware of that. It's a car for people who feel a Hummer is too subtle.

Takeoff is relative, my tuned 340i i6 turbo with zf 8spd leaves the line like a slug next to my charger hellcat... that 4 popper is a 4 popper hard to expect much from it.😁
I guess I’m one of few ‘weird’ people who like this car a lot. I have been eyeing on S5 for a year until I moved to midtown Toronto where there are 4-6 major pot holes on every block thanks to the horrible weather and multiple big constructions. Punctured my tires 3 times in 6 months, etc. So I needed some ground clearance and still did not need a Regular SUV. This car did fit my needs 100%. Tried M40i and it was so much fun to drive. The exterior was so much better than the previous version. Checked the cargo and it was plenty. People complain about rear seats but I rarely have people in the back so it was not my problem. Now I have to say I ended up buying X3 M40i because fully loaded 18 X3 M40i I purchased was more than CAD10k cheaper than almost loaded 19 X4 M40i. X3 was less fun but not $10k less. I agree it is a niche car and I think BMW knows that too because every dealership I know carries only couple of X4 while they have easily 15-20 of X3s. But just like GLC Coupe I see this more on the road and I believe they are becoming more practical. I know so many people hate this type of cars with passion but I don’t think they will fade away anytime soon lol

JUST GIVE ME A DAMN WAGON. This is just as miserable as the 3 and 5 series GT's. BMW has the 5 series sedan and a 6 series coupe/gran coupe which are both appealing in their own rights, but then they said what about a 5 series coupe/fastback? And it's horrible. Who asked for it? What purpose or void does it fill?
BMW appears to have a director for each number series and they all want their own lineups. 3 series- sedan/M, wagon, gt and SUV. 4 series- coupe/gran coupe/M, convertible and SAC. There are far too many models in their current lineup and most are stepping on each other's feet. Just head over to their website and you'll see what I mean.
And nearly $58k for this... this thing?? Nope.

One thing that's always bugged me is that no car manufacturer matches the vehicle colour on the infotainment system to the vehicle its fitted to. Always looks like you're adjusting the settings on someone else's car. How difficult is it to code that in?

hot take: I like the look of the X4. Unless they lean in to their boxy nature (ie: merc g wagen, jeep wrangler, etc...) most suvs just look awful. These suv coupes at least inject a bit of flare and style into the segment

Anyone buying this over a 5 series estate/wagon needs taking out back and shooting.
The 5 estate starts from £4K less, is faster, more economical, looks worlds better, handles better, and for most people/objects has more passenger/cargo space. And you’re getting an E segment platform instead of a bastardised D segment one.
I talked to a BMW employee and they hate the X1, 2, 4, and 6 too.
In terms of styling, the X1 and X2 are pretty good vehicles. The X4/X6, not so much. It depends on the viewers' opinions, though.

Very good review as always, but your "identity crisis" theme, with all due respect, merely means that you just don't get this vehicle. The problem is your lack of understanding it, not its identity. For zillions of other people, there is no confusion about its identity. You're overthinking it and trying to fit it into a preexisting category in your mind that isn't there. That's not the car's fault. Planning to buy one.
Every car does not need to be a sports car and raised up. When I need cargo capacity are use my parents minivan. It’s comfortable and it ridesNice over there of rough roads because I’m not trying to look 3 feet off the ground and I’m not gonna take it to a road course.
The X4 and X6 are worthless and pointless as a concept. They are fugly, it is to heavy and high for a coupe so it doesn't handle has well as equivalent 5 or 3 series sedan or is it as fast, it is not as spacious as the equivalente X3 or 5, it is not an off roader and I bet it also spends more gas than an equivalente Sedan. No point.
Worst part about this idea? Mercedes went after it and copied the freaking ugly car.

I think the motor has been overly hampered with boost by gear, it should pull harder in the lower gears. I heave the European version in my 2 series and for how powerful it feels in 3rd, it should feel far more savage in first but it’s not, it just revs out smoothly but a little slower than one would expect. However where I have a manual and far less weight than this car, in sport mode, even in comfort if you give it the revs it will absolutely launch and launch harder than the NA straight 6 cars.
I had the X3 35i, with 300hp, and it was fantastic except for the initial start off like you mention. Consensus on forums is that BMW “softens” the launch via tuning/software and has done this on many different models. Otherwise I would avoid the 4cyl on the suvs as a rule, it’s just too much weight. Buy the 6 turbo and you’ll enjoy it far better.
So, BMW is re-releasing the Pontiac Aztek. Hideous!

You should have reviewed the X4 M40i. It’s got all the options, power and adjustments you need. I’ve driven this car, Macan, evoque, fpace and the BMW is the best all round. Throw on the 21” wheels and it looks fantastic.
Whenever I see this on the road, I'm always more Careful. You have to be a certain kind of person to get one of these.

I know everyone has done one by now, but can you PLEASE review the M40i versions of the X3 and X4? I want to hear your opinions on those enhanced (albeit still not fully M) trim levels. I want to know if those trims are better and worth the upgrade.
I'm sure this comment is going to be buried and not seen by Mr Geese, but his explanation of BMW variable ratio steering is incorrect (or at least misleading). The ratio increases as you go further from center, so that you get the on-center feel of a low ratio but with only two full turns lock to lock. It gives you the best of both worlds for high speed driving and car park maneuvers. It's an entirely mechanical system and the ratios are not affected by drive modes.

The explanation was over simplified however its a two part system using a variable gear and also electronic assistance from the EPS which is how the different drive modes effect effort. The steering is far less reactive in comfort mode vs sport due to the assistance and the ratio does change based on wheel angle. Although BMW does not state percentages in any materials.
Seems like BMW put this out to catch some wind with America and their SUV Craze...
13:33 - Torque launching will rapidly increase ATF temps which will shorten the life of your transmission even if the clutch stall speed is around 2,000-2,500 RPM. Do not torque lunch your vehicle! Get a proper V6 if getting off the line fast is your main concern/objective.

It all depends on what sort of budget you have to work with. I have purchased used, out of warranty BMW and MB vehicles at prices too low to turn down. I can tell you that in doing so you are going to have to bite the bullet and pony up for the things that do go wrong. AND there will be things that do go wrong, even with that I would still buy a used BMW or MB again without question. My 2006 BMW M6 (bought it about 5 years ago), purchased the vehicle for about $18k, and I have had to fix a few minor issues. However since the original purchase price (about $100k) is so far beyond what I actually paid for the car, I am ok with having to pay a "premium" to own the car. I get to enjoy a vehicle that would have been out of my price range...originally. Even with the added expense for repairs, it is still not "crazy" expensive to own the car. Reason I think this is, even "budget" brands charge so much for repairs now a days, owning a use "High Line" car is still a reasonable option. Of course you would have to purchase the used vehicle for a price that makes any future repairs doable. It's the depreciation on vehicles like BMW and MB that make them a viable option for someone that wants an upscale vehicle, but who would not have been able to afford to purchase one new. This "debate" would not be possible if the BMW or MB vehicles held their value, it is only through their incredible depreciation that you could even make this argument, as I have here.

In my opinion this is the best infotainment in the business. Physical controls for everything use on a daily basis and there is the screen for redundancy. Very nice interior and I like the integration of the analog dials and digital display.
This "Identity Crisis" model has risen from the BMW design shittery in 2023/2024 into a iconic beauty. Okay, not quite the ass, but everywhere else.
As a Honda Crosstour Owner, this is probably one of the few cars I'd replace it with... I don't know about this version (2019), but the current 2023 version is 1 inch wider, 2 inches taller, and 10 inches shorter...
The shorter I don't think will be a deal breaker for a wagon lover, but I'm sure it'll make it much more fun to drive.

Bmw vehicles spend way more time in the shop than on the road, they are endless money pits, over excessive use of plastic materials that require replacement parts.
I tend to agree with you. The funny thing is, they can't make enough of the X Drive vehicles. It's been over five years since I've been to the SC Plant but I do know that they have not stopped plant expansions since they open in 1994. And hiring is constant. So, people are buying them. We were told that every vehicle has an owner waiting for it.
Personally, It's not for me for just the reasons you stated. But, I'm glad they are SO popular.
Charlie Zellner yes they are selling like hot bread, even the older ones are still getting purchased, I do believe once a driver gets into bmw they are hooked permanently, simply because the performance is very addictive, however the materials being used are not safe for long term operation, I’ve had coolant hose leaking literally break off from the heat, and such wear and tear damage could lead to further damages if it’s not detected right away, it’s a lot of discrepancies, and inconvenience with these vehicles, but they get drivers hooked.

Calvin Chann Bmw is probably the brand that leads with multiple models it’s to the point other brands are copying whatever model does well in sales, I think certain models need to have everything replaced once it gets to 100k miles even at 50k parts are failing, some models are reliable, and some are less, I don’t think they have any economical models in their lineup, everything is pretty much a money pit.
He's saying there is an issue with merging into traffic in 55-65 MPH roads in this car... I daily drive in the same type of traffic in my 1995 stick shift pickup.. about 120HP. We get so spoiled with modern vehicles. lol

That front lower ball joint arm looks expensive when it needs to be replaced. Now, as far as the X4 goes (and X6), it can drive off a cliff foo all i care. Sure, it may be a good car, but it has too many compromises. Worse yet, the way the door window trim comes together at the A-pillar really annoys me and just throws the whole car off, more than the car itself. Hey BMW, just give us back the (GREAT) 3 & 5 series WAGONS and if you must, add a trim that jacks the suspension up like the Outback and/or Alltrack/Allroad.

When I was growing up , we always knew what kind of engine was under the hood. And BMWs used to designate the motor with the second and third digits of their model designation. Now, they're sticking 4 cylinders in everything, and most buyers don't have any idea nor do they care. Which makes them morons. 4-cylinder turbos suck in comparison to a nice normally aspirated V6 , anybody who says differently again is a moron. What moronic designer thinks it was a good idea to have the infotainment screen jutting out of the dash instead of being incorporated into the dash? What a shitty design!
They really should have given you a M40i with the inline 6 turbo, bigger brakes, and adaptive suspension. That kinda solves your criticisms of the lack of power off the line and the "too hard" suspension for daily use. Of course, you sacrifice your wallet to fix those issues.
If you want practicality, safety and speed, get a Volvo V60 T4 R-design , or any car like that, not this abomination. You will compromise from ride height but you will get more stylish and safer car for less money.
I had an X4. I was disappointed; it was a brute to drive. I sold it and bought a Mazda 6 wagon. It would outperform the x4; it has more storage and is cheaper to run than the X4. I think the X4 is a waste of money.
The BMW X series is an SUV/coupe mix, just like the Mercedes GLE coupe. It's an ugly car and I assume designers were aware of that. It's a car for people who feel a Hummer is too subtle.

Takeoff is relative, my tuned 340i i6 turbo with zf 8spd leaves the line like a slug next to my charger hellcat... that 4 popper is a 4 popper hard to expect much from it.😁
I guess I’m one of few ‘weird’ people who like this car a lot. I have been eyeing on S5 for a year until I moved to midtown Toronto where there are 4-6 major pot holes on every block thanks to the horrible weather and multiple big constructions. Punctured my tires 3 times in 6 months, etc. So I needed some ground clearance and still did not need a Regular SUV. This car did fit my needs 100%. Tried M40i and it was so much fun to drive. The exterior was so much better than the previous version. Checked the cargo and it was plenty. People complain about rear seats but I rarely have people in the back so it was not my problem. Now I have to say I ended up buying X3 M40i because fully loaded 18 X3 M40i I purchased was more than CAD10k cheaper than almost loaded 19 X4 M40i. X3 was less fun but not $10k less. I agree it is a niche car and I think BMW knows that too because every dealership I know carries only couple of X4 while they have easily 15-20 of X3s. But just like GLC Coupe I see this more on the road and I believe they are becoming more practical. I know so many people hate this type of cars with passion but I don’t think they will fade away anytime soon lol
