It's not Linux, nor Gnome, it looks like it but it's not. Linux GNU Deepin developers have contributed their part, partially in writing OpenHarmony PC system/PC mode base, codebase which gives you a clue on why it may look like that. Some apps that are ported like ZWCAD, is likely to be ported from Linux development side to get the full complex CAD desktop app working. It's OpenHarmony base with Harmony Design technology on HarmonyOS distro of OpenHarmony with it's own custom HongMeng kernel from Huawei Technologies. As you can see the windowed management is structured different from Gnome Linux, despite looking similar, full screen is first, then minimize and red X for close lol
HarmonyOS 5.0 is not based on Linux. This is a new kernel. The earlier versions did use Linux, but Huawei ditched it for an in-house micro-kernel, which is much lighter and efficient.
so, is it a completely commercial os only for specific devices? or is it like android or chrome os where the base os is open and the more advanced user facing functionality commercial?
HarmonyOS is commercial OS for specific Huawei devices with more advanced user-facing functionality, where as the base OS, OpenHarmony, alongside global Oniro OS side is open with barebones and allows advanced functionality that can be added in customisations by other 3rd party FOSS developers and software vendors, similar to Linux-based ChromeOS.
I heard it's Q1 2025 new year, January-March period. At first I thought it will be December, but it's too tight in launch wave with Mate 70 series that includes the next MatePad Pro model
Full third party Chromium browser is ported but also embedded as a browser kernel for HarmonyOS from OpenHarmony base, that stems from Chromium Embedded Framework on version 114, pre-Manifest v3. Long term plan is to replace or co-exist with primary Servo browser kernel which Huawei is now one of the top 3 contributors.
3rd party browser from China, called Lotus Secure Browser, full Chromium based browser that supports desktop mode, which is only available in Chinese AppGallery for Chinese HarmonyOS 5 ROM. Global HarmonyOS ROM will have global 3rd party native HarmonyOS browsers on global AppGallery.
Yes they do, they are integrated with universal apps, for phone only apps, you can stream your phone screen to it like before with Windows back in the day via Super Device.
It is clear now that this is built on Linux with Gnome, which offers an excellent user interface. Good job Huawei 👍

Will Huawei matepad pro 10.8 (2019) also get harmonyos next update? If so, when will it happen?
China side, around 2025, Kirin 990 and up. For global 2023 and up, with Kirin 9000s tablets and Kirin 9000s/9010 phones
Any news on the pc os?
