I just started using vests about a year ago now and I 100% agree they are great for layering after the sun is out I usually just rock the vest un zipped over the long sleeve and it's perfect if I'm actually workin on moving and easy to through more layers over if needed
Wore a carhartt vest out cart pushing in negative 7! Genuine shock when that it kept me warm. Of course I had a nice set of gloves but that vest was a lifesaver and I was sold.
I live in Midwestern Illinois i wear a long sleeve shirt a hoodie and a Carhartt rugged shirt jacket..warm all winter

Long sleeve, hoodie, heated jacket, than a big lined duck coat is my combo surprised I still move? Me too lol
All I need is the carhartt Yukon xtreme maybe a Walmart sweater with hoodie underneath and underneath just regular Columbia self wicking water stain resistant clothes. Even just a Yellow high visibility winter jacket is warm enough and keeps you safe and compliant.
Man we wear the same type of combo that's crazy gotta have that Columbia too, regular cotton blends soak up sweat bad and take forever to dry out.

Really good informational video from someone whose worked outside my whole life. I might add a synthetic breathable layer against my skin and forgo that long-sleeved cotton T. Or better yet merino wool is my favorite base. But yeah great advise and good looking clothing you are selling. Been wanting to buy one of the carhartt FR jackets. Tried one on and loved how it felt
one thing I've learned is that you should never be "warm" you should be COOL.
why? because if you're warm, and you start working, moving stuff, etc. you're going to get HOT, then you will start to sweat, once you sweat a little bit and say "damn I'm hot" and take off a layer, there's no going back, you're gonna be chilled to the bone because you're now wet and clammy due to you sweating.
it is for this reason that I have never ever worn anything else but a regular tee shirt, and my carhartt J140. I'm that guy who will run around in just a tee shirt in 40 degree weather, however as soon as it gets below freezing, I put on my jacket. I find in doing this I acclimate to the colder weather and find myself more comfortable.
I don't wear hoodies because I just don't like them, I like the hood (hence why I wear a J140, instead of something like a traditional coat), but I don't like the pockets being in the front and "out there" as I've seen way to many guys get sucked into the late while machining something because their flabby hoodie pocket got caught in the work piece. this is compounded by the fact that most hoodies have strings that hang down to chest level or longer, bonus points if it's sewn at the top of the hood so it sucks your face into while it has you held by the neck as well. they do this so the strings don't come out in the wash, but it's a shitty thing to do because of the safety concerns, some work hoodies even have it sewn at the top.
TLDR: I'm weird.
Thank you Lil Chlamydia. You definitely have put some thought into this and it sounds like you have the experience to back it up. I totally agree that you should be cool to start. That's said over and over again in the hunting and hiking world too. Start out cool because you will warm up as you get moving. Thank you for your input!

Great video but I work on the docks and u also need something that wicks away sweat as your first layer if you get wet while you're working in the cold your in trouble

Which is the warmer jacket between the Ariat Workhorse and the Carhartt Full Swing? I see that Carhartt lists it as a warm level of 1 on their website which has me concerned. It gets cold in Northern Illinois.
No base layer to wick sweat away from skin?

What brand wool socks are best and what brand of rain gear would you recommend that you wont sweat in but would keep you dry out in rain all day
Darn Tough socks are probably one of the best, I would stay away from smartwool. Rain gear is another story, you can spend from $100 to well over $1000 on rain gear and tbh, it will all make you sweat at some point. I like Outdoor Research rain gear though it has no FR rating.
We would recommend any of the FITS wool socks. www.fitssock.com/ You will need to choose the FITS sock depending on the activity you are doing and time of year you will be using them.
As for rain gear, we would recommend Carhartt. They have different options from actual rain coats to their Storm and Rain Defender lines that is a water-repellant gear.

Hi Jules. Sorry about the late reply. The holidays slowed me down. You are not alone. The Carhartt Full Swing and the Ariat Workhorse jackets are the two best sellers in our store and we are always walking our customers through the pros and cons of each.
The Workhorse is made tough with the classic canvas shell which is great on those cold windy days. It is water repellent. Not waterproof but it will keep you dry long enough to get the job done. It does not have a hood option so if you want a hood go with the Carhartt.
The Carhartt Full Swing, which I will be doing a video on this week, has some great options too. This jacket is all about mobility. It has 150 gram 3M™ Thinsulate™ Platinum FR Insulation for warmth. That way you get good insulation without having to have a really thick jacket. It also has the Full Swing technology which means Carhartt put Gussets on the arms, elbows and on the back to help with mobility. It makes wearing a heavier jacket easy. I hope this info helps!
I would avoid the fullswing and get the basic carhartt fr coat. The full swings fit weird and design leaves a pocket below the shoulder blades for dirt to collect in. I have both.

How would you layer from the waist down?
One thermal if the high temp is 40 or below, two thermals if the high is 30 degrees. Pants, overpants if it's raining or stupid cold. Can't really take off the thermals, so you just have to plan it right for the day.
@@johnyracercat thanks! I have yet to find rain gear that keeps me dry for about 4 hours outside in medium to heavy rain. I’ve tried a couple of Carhartt Storm defender rain gear and I got damp / wet in about 3 hours. In fact I was wearing my Carhartt Shoreline set in a medium rain when I was called into work a couple nights ago and it was chilly. It felt like it soaked through not sure it was sweat but I started to feel chilly from the dampness inside.
Can anyone recommend reliable rain gear please! If this happens in the winter in like mid to upper 30’s it won’t be good in the rain or wet snow. Thanks!
@@MarcP5267 They have sprays you can "re-waterproof" your gear with, but I haven't tested it.

@@MarcP5267 I've had cheap gear work and new gear get me soaked. I don't work outside anymore, but I would try the spray or figure out where the water is getting in.
