This episode is a detailed way of saying that Toei's writing staff was more interested in continuing the franchise with the base elements rather than telling a good, organic story.

As I don't believe in existence of good or bad writing this epsilde was enjoyable enough for me. At least it's not a tournament arc, plus some funny shenanigans are better than being too serious like most of Z. Them having Pan act like Bulma is pretty gross, especially if she's 9, but considering the episode of Jojo part 3 where an Orangutan assaulted a minor in the shower, this isn't the worst I had to sit through in a shonen, not that it makes this good.

People like Rildo mostly because he's really the only traditional DBZ-style antagonist in the show before Baby. A powerful guy with several forms that takes a long time to defeat, and it helps that his powers are memorable too. Even I found this raising of stakes refreshing when first watching.
Also probably because the GT dub is borderline fanfiction at times and changed his generic rants about Miu's plans to some totalitarian fanatic speech, so that probably made him stand out a bit more to the 90s kids watching.

It's weird how Toei included a scene of Cell using the Special Beam Cannon, a move that only Piccolo knows, but Piccolo is FAR more surprised by the significantly wider known Kamehameha. If anything, the Kamehameha should've come first, since that scene was in the manga and has to play out, but then he could've been more surprised by the use of his own technique.

Considering the Terminator influence on the Cell Arc (Trunks’ design matching John Connor’s somewhat, the date in which the androids are predicted to arrive being similar to when Skynet takes over, etc.), the clear influence here seems to be T2, what with the molten metal/changing forms/passing through objects. Obviously just a small surface level observation but still cute.
Additionally, Nut seems less like the comparative Raditz of the group and more like Ghurd/Guldo. Dies to show the strength of the hero(es), and outclassed by the other posing members of the group.

I have a theory on the whole "Sexualizing a child" thing, it coincides with the whole "10 years later" myth too:
Notice how on GT itself, the Lood Cult says it's been 20 years since Dolltaki had made a public appearance. However, when you read the GT Perfect Files, it states it's been 15 years instead. Me thinks the series was originally written as being 10 years after Dragon Ball, which would make Pan 14-15 years old. Only for them to retcon it later on to 5 years later, which made Pan go to 9-10 years old. Of course, that doesn't make the character's sexualization any less okay, but it does make it less disgusting.

Re: "This guy is stronger than Boo!" Normally I'd be right there with you that it really isn't worth caring about this comparison the way Fans do, but in this specific instance I actually do think it's a bad choice for the needs of the story. Not because Boo's honor has been, like, impugned or whatever, but rather because it's just so obviously unconvincing. Like, do YOU buy, at ANY point, that General Rild poses a greater threat to Goku than Boo did? Because I sure don't! And as a result Goku making that comparison feels distracting and cloying, like a sitcom introducing a replacement character for a suddenly-departed actor and insisting that you will totally love them just the same for realsies! Obviously, the effectiveness of the story does not turn on whether Goku compares Rild to Boo or not? But I do ultimately think all the comparison serves to do narratively is shine a spotlight on how boring and uninteresting Rild is as an antagonist and the show would have been at least SOMEWHAT better off if it hadn't bothered to make it in the first place.

I wonder if this subplot was inspired by Getter Robo? It’s an older Toei anime which featured a giant robot composed of 3 parts, that can take multiple forms for different occasions, such as flying, fighting with a drill, and having extending arms, sorta similar to Super Mega Cannon Signa. Getter Robo also had a revival a few years before GT came out, and the manga version of that revival introduced a new robot with some powers similar to what Rilld can do, like absorbing a planet into itself. So, if it’s a deliberate reference, that’s kinda neat. Would’ve been better if it was a less lackluster reference, but I guess it’s the thought that counts.

12:55 the exception to “I’m not using my full power” not being just a shift in intensity but actually flipping the battle entirely is when the villains do it. And that just makes narrative sense. Dragon Ball often thrives on seemingly unbeatable villains who the heroes must find a way to overcome. Having the HERO do it, on the other hand, just robs the fight of any narrative stakes. Plus… at least in the past, even that isn’t usually jumping from one extreme to the other, when they did this with villains revealing their true power. It’s usually a fight that seems more even, which we then realize the hero is far more outclassed than we knew, often with the hero already seeming like he’s still the underdog even when you thought he had a chance.

Hell they could've just attacked Frieza while he was still alive and killed him and take over his suppose Universe owning Empire, even if they were half as powerful while Frieza was still alive, Frieza would still be an ant in power levels compare to Myuu’s nobody minion’s. Here's the thing about M2: I always want to like it due to my general affection for robot characters in science fiction, but whenever I visit this portion of GT I'm reminded of how boring and frustrating it is.
After a decently ominous introduction, the Mega Cannon Sigma quartet turn out to be utter chumps, never really demonstrating any interesting fighting tactics or techinques. Nutt only stands out from the rest because he dies first. They opt to combine to combat Goku despire knowing for a fact that his battle power is exponentially greater than theirs (incalculable, even!) so what's the point? Goku remains chipper and unfazed throughout, and it turns out that he could destroy them by simply transforming into a Super Saiyan. Meaning that the dreaded Mega Cannon Sigma put up less of a fight than Ledgic!
And don't even get me started on General Rilld. He has multiple transformations, but they all feel abritrary and thus lacking in any kind of impact either to the narrative or the fight. As though the writers hope to distract from his lack of personality by swapping out his toy every so often. His behaviour once he gets out in the field is just baffling; he's supposed to be the top of M2's pecking order, but all he seems to do is pull his punches and waste time. The reveal that he can encase people in metal AND teleport them away means that he could've just done that to Goku and Trunks whilst they were captive and saved himself a lot of bother.
All I wanted was some cool robot fighters, man.

Maybe it's because I watch the English dub, but I personally found General Rildo to be a decently developed character, at least compared to most other Dragon Ball villains.
Most other DB baddies will kill even their own subordinates over the slightest provocation, with maybe the exception of original Piccolo. General Blue kills a guy just for picking his nose. Vegeta kills a Saibaman just because he was slightly holding back against Tien, and then kills Nappa simply because he's no longer useful. Frieza kills the guy who announces the arrival of the Ginyu Force just because he's in a bad mood, and Babidi kills Yamu and Spopovich for literally no reason at all.
Rildo, at least in English, is actually loyal to his subordinates. He rewards Giru with a medal and holds a ceremony in his honor because of his incredible achievement (which, were it not for the fact that he was a triple agent, would indeed be an incredible achievement). When Giru offers up the saiyans' fighting patterns so they can be defeated, Rildo commends Giru again, calling him "useful beyond words." When the Sigma Force is defeated, Rildo is furious, and his subordinates are shitting their pants around him, but he assures them that they have nothing to fear, that only Goku should be afraid.
Also, during that last scene, he speaks with a calm, collected presence, even when he's literally sparking electricity with how angry he is.
His loyalty to his subordinates, and his ability to keep his cool in even the worst situations certainly elevates him above the one-dimensionally evil baddies from the manga.
But again, that might just be the English dub.

Like, the villains all seem extremely bland. It feels like it tried to split the difference between the shorter fights of early dragon ball and the more serious tone of ‘Z’ fights, but just ended up with super unmemorable villains.
And the villains, I’m convinced, are the only reason people remember anything in Dragon Ball. There’s a reason more people like the Cooler Movies or the Tree of Power than Bojack or Bio-Broly.

13:18 I love it when the whole ‘cel sliding in’ thing happens. Off the top of my head, there are at least two instances in Z where a character slides into frame:
The Seigasha episode where the gang is waiting for Freeza’s ship to land on Earth. Tenshinhan slides into the shot when he senses Freeza’s ki right before Vegeta scolds him and Yamcha for not suppressing their own ki.
The Studio Live episode where Cell makes his worldwide TV broadcast. Trunks slides into the frame when he tries to calm down the argument between Vegeta and Yamcha.
But yeah, GT-era Last House is somehow generally harder to look at than their work in the back half of Z. Other than the few wonky-looking Doga Kobo episodes, Last House’s work in GT sticks out for all the wrong reasons.

As with Pan yeah they kept dropping the ball with her character. If you are going to try to depict her as sexy at least find an in universe reason to spontaneously age her up by a decade or so which would have tied to her original motivations and upped the creepiness and guilt factor by a few degrees. Not only would have Giru betrayed and used her but he would have also taken away her innocence and childhood in this theoretical scenario which is just inexcusable.

Then again, maybe you were the one who cited that interview and that's where I heard of it. Alternatively, it could've been SomeCallMeMark. On a different note, Rild kinda reminds me of Metal Cooler in his last form.
On the topic of Rild, I suppose it's a question of which version of Buu he's stronger than. It's kinda weird to have some guy out there stronger than the guy who terrorized the universe to the point the Kais felt the need to step in, but Pure Buu/Kid Buu was the weakest form and gave Goku a good run for his money. The idea that someone could be stronger than that while not necessarily being stronger than Super Buu w/ Gohan and Pals absorbed isn't unreasonable I guess.

Rild being stronger than Boo hurts because it puts a nail in a coffin of any attempt to say that Goku being a kid scales him back. Instead he's violenty thrusted forward powerwise past his greatest feat in his adult life after some silly goofing around.

As bland as it was, I did sort of remember the goku vs. Rildo fight. What I didn't remember was the creepy stuff they did here with Pan... ewww
