TIP- the best yellow for mixing all kinds of beautiful greens is azo nickel yellow. In mass tone it’s warm and when you dilute it transforms into a cool bright yellow it’s magical for mixing.

I personally use split primaries (warm and cool in both CMY, and RYB) and a little zinc white for tinting because water doesn't desaturate to the tint I want sometimes. I find that unless I use a split primary I run into ugly secondary colors, especially with green and purple. None of us NEED to buy lots of coloring but for me I liken it to our hunting and gathering phase as humans - it is so primal to be addicted to color.

I find having a warm red and a warm blue doesn't make a great purple, so I'd next add a cool blue and a cool red. I don't know that you can find one of either that's neither cool nor warm.

Its because red is not a primary. Red is a mix of magenta and yellow.
Magenta yellow and cyan are the primarys

You’d actually want a cool red/magenta and a warm blue to make a more vivid purple as each color is leaning toward the violet part of the color wheel.

I find that colour is secondary to tone. Tone creates form which leads to structure, but colour is emotional value. A B&W photo could be more powerful than a colour photo. Like imagine a portrait of a famous musician, say Jimi Hendrix. If you painted that with just one warm red and one cold blue then you can get that to work, even better in some cases. People we just except the colouring if the likeness is correct. And the colour can be reasoned in our heads, as we don't know what the light was doing in the scene, he could be on stage with blue and red lighting hitting his face. But if the tone isn't right then the portrait would look weak regardless of a good likeness or realistic colour work.
