i love the way the irish can sing about decay and corpses and graves and the like with such incredible lusciousness. brings to mind sinead o'connor's, "i am stretched on your grave." buzzards, insects, foxes, ravens. so nice.

How does this not have 15M views?
One of the greatest songs ever written, the subdued harmonies interweaving with the sheer depth of the text.
And to see them do it in real time, no post, no editing, just raw performance.
    Two voices, one guitar.

It's awesome that Hozier is able to leave echoes of his music and voice swimming around in my head, even after I've turned off the video. His music is haunting, enchanting and apparently, my brain likes it enough to keep replaying it over and over. Not that I mind. :)

I have a theory that the sonorities Hozier selects are beneficial to the brain and body. This particular song not the best example because it is about an uplifting subject, accepting the harmony of nature; however, many of his other stories are about people who are wronged and who do wrong, and yet the effect is uplifting because of how he uses voices and how they interact with the instruments and percussion, which also has a meditative effect. I have read a bit about these things but don't know enough to analyze his music. Still, I think that's what's happening when I listen.

This is the most tragic yet lovely song I've ever heard. I love how the lyrics tell the grotesque side of death yet when two people love each other there's still something beautiful to be found in it.

    I have never known peace
Like the damp grass that yields to me
    I have never known hunger
Like these insects that feast on me
    A thousand teeth
And yours among them, I know
    Our hungers appeased
    Our heartbeats becoming slow
We lay here for years or for hours
    Thrown here or found
    To freeze or to thaw
So long we become the flowers
    Two corpses we were
    Two corpses I saw
And they'd find us in a week
    When the weather gets hot
After the insects have made their claim
    I'd be home with you
    I'd be home with you
    I have never known sleep
Like the slumber that creeps to me
    I have never known color
Like this morning reveals to me
And you haven't moved an inch
Such that I would not know
If you sleep always like this
    The flesh calmly going cold
We lay here for years or for hours
    Your hand in my hand
    So still and discreet
So long we become the flowers
    We'd feed well the land
    And worry the sheep
And they'd find us in a week
    When the cattle show fear
After the insects have made their claim
After the foxes have known our taste
    I'd be home with you
    I'd be home with you
They'd find us in a week (Lay here for years or for hours)
When the weather gets hot (So long we become the flowers)
They'd find us in a week (Lay here for years or for hours)
When the cattle shows fear (So long we become the flowers)
And they'd find us in a week
    When the buzzards get loud
After the insects have made their claim
After the foxes have known our taste
After the raven has had its say
    I'd be home with you
    I'd be home with you
    I'd be home with you
    I'd be home with you
    I'd be home with you
    I'd be home with you

I know everyone is saying they look pissed or tired, but to me it almost looks like they're taking on the characters that they're singing about. Probably not what they were actually going for but in my mind that's what it's like. They look sort of haunted. I love it ❤️ an of course their voices together are absolutely unmatched 🖤🖤🖤

I interpreted the chorus as not a week but a lifetime: A couple stealing away to a hillside and talking about growing old and eventually "wasting away"/dying of old age together. It's hauntingly beautiful nonetheless. The imagery of the lyrics in my head is vivid.

That’s not the way he is, he wouldn’t be so impolite if that was the reason. I think something happened before.

I've been a HOZIER fan since take me to church got popular thats how I found him really, but his music has inspired me and gotten me through the hardest times in my life since then. When I was admitted inpatient to the hospital 2 years ago in august after my suicide attempt..we had no access to the outside world. No phones or any electronic devices of any kind. Just one small TV on the wall inside a protective casing all inpatients had to share. I was severely depressed even while there. It was awful..and all I could think about was how much I missed hearing my music. Especially hozier, I was obsessed with Sunlight at the time. We were only allowed 1 hour of fresh air outside which was basically a bird cage (so people couldn't jump off the balcony). The trees moving in the wind and the birds chirping quickly became heavens noise compared to the crying and banging Id constantly hear inside our hospital wing, some of it came from me I'll admit. When i was finally discharged I was assessed for any more suicidal thoughts or urges before being walked to my grammas car by staff in case I tried to run into traffic. I got in and we drove home. The FIRST thing I asked her to do was to play Sunlight by HOZIER. It was on repeat the whole way and i cried and cried my fucking eyes out. His voice, the guitar and melodies, his complex simplicity and lyrical rythym....everything just filled my being with that Sunlight. The windows were down and the air rushing by felt so goddamn good on my face and skin. To this day I still haven't seen HOZIER perform live but it's on my to do list. He saved my life literally, and now I teach myself how to play his songs so when I'm depressed I just grab my guitar and start singing!!! His song "In A Week" feat Karen Crowley is one of those songs I never thought I had the ability to play. I believed it was too difficult to learn...but I just kept at it practicing and practicing and giving up and trying again and getting frustrated and feeling victorious when I get through a verse without a mistake. Well last night I played the whole song straight through AND sung it as well. Two things that have always been hard for me (I'm actually a classically trained Violist and have played in the orchestra since 4th grade so learning music itself wasn't the challenge, it was HIS music specifically that was), since he is professional and has played guitar all his life. But I just play and play because HOZIER is such an inspiration to me ): I hope I can perform his songs as covers someday to an audience...and maybe inspire somebody else going through a really dark time. My name is Canary, I'm 23 now and I'm an Artist from Chicago and thank you to those who read the whole thing. Maybe mr Andrew Byrne will see this one day!

This is how good Andrew is: He’s making this beautiful complicated melodies while he looks around, watching people walk by, not even paying attention to his guitar!
Sure I bet he’s played this song hundreds of times, but a mere mortal would still have to look down, where do I set my fingers, etc. Not him. I could listen to him play for years.

What does it matter if they are mad at each other or if she wants him but he doesn't or anything else you're guessing? Did you enjoy the song? Where you captivated by their voices? That's all that's important. Hozier is an amazing artist who is also very shy and reserved so the lack of smiles or eye contact doesn't really say anything. Besides he never cared about rumors or the image he is projecting. So let's just enjoy the music.

Oh gosh, I thought I was the only one who noticed the awkwardness. I feared I've been watching too many live performances of his and I'm just reading into their expressions too much but ha, I'm not alone!
    - he looks like he's avoiding eye contact, he legit looks above her head and behind, but not at her
    - although he looks at her at some point, he averts his gaze before she turns and in 2:09 gosh, he just looks pissed...
    - the way she looks at him is kinda weird, like she's waiting for something/him to look back at her
    - he looks detached from his playing, like he isn't into it/feeling it - he usually is. heck, he doesn't smile one bit or react the way he usually does when performing (when the music literally feels/sounds/looks like its emanating from his soul, yknow what i mean)
    - the end, he doesn't look at all, im screaminf even when she's been glancing up multiple times throughout the performance (see 5:13 ! they look like a fighting couple)
    - slightly furrowed brows at the end :/ (and lots of awkwardness)

Usually when he sings u can from his expression that he is super in to song and feeling it and thats what is missing here i think

Beautiful song, but it’s unnerving to watch their expressions on this performance (especially Andy’s). Andy looks displeased. Alana looks nervous (and sounds nervous-all that quivering).
Around 2 min or so, he fucks up his playing a little and the atmosphere is even worse haha. Throughout the whole thing, she keeps glancing at him nervously. I find this entire video so awkward. The other live version with Karen Cowley is a much more comfortable, natural performance.
Even so, the song itself is probably one of my fave Hozier songs. It’s beautifully written, yet perfectly morbid.

    • @laurak1697

unnerving is exactly the word. the psychology of situations like this kills me. are we all just super reading into this, or were they both having a horrible time that day for some actual reason? guess we'll never know...

could be a bunch of different aspects. he could've made this song in someone's honor and it brings up memories. he could have feelings for someone but they don't feel the same. music can bring feelings and moods out of a person. it's why it's such a big part of humanity.

I do not have esp, so I can't get in their heads, but goodness, I thought the same thing. So I had to see if Alana had joined him at future shows. And she had, and personally, I like her as much as Karen.
What I DID notice in all the other videos I watched is that he is playing an electric(?) guitar. I wonder if their was a problem with his other guitar.
      So unnerving, though! Spot on!!

This is not the same harmony from the album, The album was done with Karen Cowley who has a lower pitch than Alana Henderson. It fits the song a bit better but it seems she was unable to perform the song with him on tour so he sang this song at Lollapoolza with Alana instead. If you compare the album version hozier to the live hozier his voice does not differ much at all.

Reminds me of an episode from Cold Case Files titled "Sweethearts, Silenced". Tim and Kelly were murdered after attending a friend's wedding in the 80s. Both their bodies were found in a place in Wisconsin similar to that depicted in the song. Similar except they weren't found in a week--- Instead they were found 70+ days after their disappearance. That homicide case was solved for more than two decades after. Here's hoping they are "home" together now. ❤️
