I think the difference between gold and lumber is gold is supposed to be the number of units, while lumber represents an increase in their power. So gold doesn’t increase a whole lot to prevent a game lag worthy amount of fodder units, but you get plenty of lumber to make the ones you have more powerful

Its just a two resource system basic units cost gold but upgrades can cost both lumber and gold at random there is no thought given to it
The prequels had bad writing and dialogue but I agree they were at least creative with many things unlike the recent ones that have bad writing and are unimaginative
I have to give kudos to Wtii for not building dedicated anti air and still winning against the death star
