  • The Škoda Kodiaq vRS was put to the ultimate test by the horrendous weather during the week I had the car. The vRS is the sporty trim level from Škoda an the 7 seat Kodiaq boasts 245PS and four wheel drive. Perfect for the weather I had to deal with !

Loved my 2018 Octavia vRS. It’s my second best car I’ve owned (behind the 2014 M135i). Skoda make great cars, which are ridiculously practical. If you don’t need 7 seats then an Octavia vRS estate is the only family car you need. £54k though is utterly bonkers. Car prices are insane.

Got a Kodiaq Sportline for the 7 seats as we regularly carry 4 teenagers and 3 adults. Wasn't expecting to be blown away just a utility vehicle for shifting family and loads to the tip (you can fit ridiculous loads in it's cavernous interior, I've even managed to fit king size mattresses in it & 3m long skirting!) but I've actually been really impressed by it's comfort, driving engagement (it's no sports car but it's better than an average car) and the clever bits Skoda include like the pop out door protectors, the ice scraper, the umbrellas, the parcel shelf storage, the pop out light in the boot...the list goes on. Never thought I'd be a Skoda owner, can be a bit of a badge snob but this car has certainly changed my mind on the brand and will include them on short lists in the future.

I find if I plug phone in with a cable, best to do it with the car switched off. Won’t lose CarPlay at all then, but if you plug in after the engine is running it sometimes losses connection.
Love the seats in my Kodiaq very comfy, even after 770miles in 11.45hrs. It’s a great car

Skoda's are just amazing cars. Totally practical, and perform well. The VRS is definitely the option to select. The name Skoda still has a bit of a stigma attached to it, but only by those who have never driven one. Always good to see a friend of the A272, Winchester to Petersfield, one of my regular commutes. Cheers Pedro

I honestly think Skoda have the best blend of functionality at reasonable price points. If you're playing with company money, then get an Audi or BMW. If it's your own money, you'd be hard pressed to justify anything other than a Skoda! Great cars.
Another fan of the A272 here (tried out my wife's new GTI Clubsport on it yesterday!) - but less so of the SPECS that have appeared on it :(

I have a 2019 Skoda Kodiaq Sportline. This was a factory order with a host of options, the only difference between my Sportline and the VRS was the Bhp, the alloys and the red stitching. Even the Skoda salesman at the time stated that anyone buying the VRS over the Sportline was a lunatic considering the 5 year road tax of £570 per year, year 2-6. My road tax is £180. My previous car, Skoda Octavia VRS estate - Road Tax £30 per year!! Today it looks like the VRS has an annual road tax of £1565 although this might be year 1 followed by 5 years of £570. Pedro you included car prices in your reviews I would like to also have you mention TCO and road tax.

Ready good point you make about performance going for an overtake. My folks chopped out their Audi a4 multitronic 2.0 tai for a mini countryma 1.5 litre petrol. The box is responsive but they both say it hasn’t got enough pole to get out of its own way - my dad just doesn’t bother any more in it. He loves his golf 2.0 tai dsg as if he wants to get past something, he’s got great grunt just where he wants it. They’re upgrading to 2.0 litre petrol as they reckon it won’t drink much more in real world as they’ll have plenty in reserve for when they need it like a short slip road on tools back!

  • @runawayronnie

great video. As per others. I opted for the Sportline as it was better value. Added the options I wanted so it's my perfect car. I'm one of those folk who motoring hacks refer to as living an impossible lifestyle - the car is used for carrying all sorts of sporting equipment, camping, and in addition to a fully loaded car I can carry my mountain bike upright, inside the car ( all you do is mount a front fork support on a piece of wood and insert it where the load cover stores underfloor). It's such a fantastic car for us. It's now 3yr old, this is when I usually change my cars, I've had a look around and believe it or not, I can't find anything to touch my Kodiaq at any price! Seriously. I'd have to compromise in some way if I changed cars. The infotainment? Yes, the newer systems are more buggy than the older ones but still, which system isn't? I can find flaws in all systems. The only time I use Sport mode is for overtaking otherwise I leave it in normal. Over 3yr I've averaged around 40mpg which is insane. Cars are obviously subjective but for me, I've yet to see a better car that fits my lifestyle. The Mk2 Kodiaq you recently reviewed? I can already see flaws in it over the car I currently own. I kept asking myself what exactly have they improved?

It’s been great, has most of the features noted here and, importantly, motorway driving on Economy at ~65mph returns me 40mpg ( according to the car!). When we fell out with JLR over my wife's beloved diesel Discovery Sport we went shopping for alternatives and ended up exchanging the Disco for a 2.0 petrol Kodiaq SEL 4x4 (the first of the "new badge" versions) which we have now had for four years and put 60k miles on. She loves it and uses it as her daily, I like it but whenever I drive it I have to put it in sport mode to get the kind of steering feel it needs. In normal mode the steering is, to my mind, too light for such a large vehicle and so my start-up ritual whenever I need to drive it is to a) put it in Sport mode and b) turn off start/stop. Only problems in 60k miles have been a sticking rear parking brake motor and a replacement battery. It did over 53k miles on the initial set of tyres which I have now swapped now for Michelin Cross Climates that are thus far brilliant. My wife trains gun dogs and is frequently driving through muddy fields and farmyards and has never got it stuck even though it is not an obvious tool for that job, many of her shooting friends are impressed with how it copes in the mud.
Thanks for a really good, informative video.

Great video Ped. I’ve had my VRS Kodiaq for 18 months or so now. The plastic hubcaps lasted about a week before they went into the loft, they are dreadful, and hide a pretty wheel underneath. Performance and mpg also significantly improved on mine after 10k once it loosened itself off a bit. I regularly use all 3 rows of seats, cart dogs around and tow with mine, it’s such a versatile car. The road tax is slightly painful, but I bloody love it. BTW, press and hold the radio power button for 15 seconds and it reboots and starts again. The issue is it’s an android infotainment system.

I like Skoda's alot, my wife had a Yeti and it was brilliant, however £54,000 is alot of money for a Skoda. In comparison I have just ordered a P250 HSE F-Pace for just a few grand more and I know people will laugh because of JLR reliability issues, I am on my fourth F-Pace and all has been well with them, call it snobbery but I would rather drive a F-Pace to a Kodiaq.

Did I miss the explanation of 'virtual pedal'?
I think it looks better than the VW and Audi equivalents. I don't mind the red, better than grey or silver in my opinion...at least it stands out.
On a different topic, what do you think about some insurance companies not going to insure EVs just now due to possible issues with batteries damage after an accident, not to mention cost and availability of new batteries? I was thinking of going EV in next car but this has made me think. Perhaps an issue for a Q&A session?

The ‘virtual pedal’ is the kick activation release for the boot.

I have a 23 plate octavia vrs diesel 7 speed dsg.
Lovely drive, comfortable and nice cabin.
    However, 2 things.
1: Very suprised how much oil its using, or should i say coloured water.
Skoda main dealer advised I log journeys and record oil usage!
2: The VW infotainment system is appalling.
I've lost count how many times it turns off and resets.
Seriously considering trading in, trouble is I'll take the hit on depreciation...

    Evening PP
I’m currently hitting 3 months on owning my Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0 petrol
    I do love it
But infotainment is awful, car play lags and does glitch like urs did in the video.
But I’d happily upgrade my Octavia for the Kodiaq VRS
And yeh I wish the VRS button was on the steering wheel

People say EV’s are expensive…..yet this slightly warm petrol SUV, which does 33 mpg is £54k - I really don’t see the appeal 🤷🏼‍♂️
I would take a Skoda Enyaq vRS or Tesla Model Y over this - same price, a lot more performance, a much smoother drive and cheaper to run.

I considered getting a car with seven seats but it was based on an almost forced need. Ended up with a 5 seater for the last 2.5 years and have only needed more than 5 seats twice. Would be easier to rent a mini bus for those occasions
