I like how this ad doesn’t just say “be safe around trains” but gives people a mythbusters esc demonstration and explains why trains have the right of way.
After over 4 years of railroading I've had a lot of close calls, and one that got more than just close. Seeing this video shared on Facebook by NS and people reacting with a "laugh" reaction makes me sick. There're no words to explain the feeling in your stomach the moment a car jumps out in front of your 20,000 ton coal train and you see a toddler's face pressed against the window in the rear seat, mouth agape in awe of the freight train, as you come a few feet from killing him and his reckless guardian. And then when the day comes that it isn't just a near miss, and you do hit that car with someone inside. Those are moment's I'll never forget.
I am retired Metro North Railroad and I can tell you how many close calls I’ve seen…I think of my locomotive engineer friends and conductor friends often
Train vs. Car = Train and 3000 pounds of metal confetti. Train vs. Human = Train and 150 pounds of splintered bone and shredded meat. Moral: the train always wins. So let it.
This isn’t even close to accurate though. In reality, like Oddish said, the car absolutely explodes on impact and instantly kills any occupants. If your car gets stuck at a railroad crossing, even if you can’t see a train, put on your hazards and walk as far up the road as you can while calling the tow truck. I can tell you, as the grandson of a railroader, they never EVER forget the incidents that lead to injuries or deaths. It’s absolutely brutal, and there is nothing that the employees on the train can do about it when it happens.
well im kind of a little expert on trains and depending on a trains speed it can take a train a mile or more to come to a complete stop even if the emergency breaks are applied!

It saddens me that we have to actually run safety ads like this because there are people who dont try to understand the physics of the world they live in.. To those who think about crossing railroad tracks, this PSA from NHTSA, the DOT, and the FRA, makes a great point about railroad crossing safety. So when a train's coming, *STOP!* Trains can't.
This needs to be played in every Driver’s Ed classroom. Sure, it would be a traumatic sight to see the car totaled this way, even if it is just a simulation for TV, but at least it’s a visual that gets the point across. I’m sure that such an accident would also be traumatic for the railroad conductor and engineer, knowing that someone died because the train couldn’t stop in time.
This is money better spent as here 7 years in the future some guy spent 50 grand for a animated music video thats wasn't even good, so yeah money well spent.
This message is so simple and great. Stop, Trains Can't. You may be at the crossing before the train is, but you can only go an average speed of about 10mph while trains can be going between 75 - 125 mph!! Always remember, not every crossing will warn you about an on coming train.
There's a pretty large percentage of people who commit suicide by train. It leaves the engineers traumatized. I can't even think of what it would feel like to try and stop a train while they're just standing right there
An engineer feeling guilty about running over a suicidal person would be like a business man feeling guilty about someone jumping off a building they worked at.
5 years later and now the Local News Station "Local 10, WPLG" are blaming Brightline for their failure to not stop instead of blaming the Driver to NOT go around the train tracks. Kind of stupid if you ask me. This is a great message from the FRA, NHTSA and the Department of Transportation "aka, DoT for short"
Problem is it isn't always the idiot driver who pays the price. Sometimes hitting something like an SUV or Van can derail the train putting others at risk. Even then, killing someone, even though it is not there fault, is really traumatizing for the train engineer.
The one shown in this video, yes, because its going a lot slower than the speed that would require a full mile to stop. One mile to stop is hyperbolic given the speed the train is shown to travel at in the ad, but a high speed train will in fact take 1-2 miles to emergency brake form its top speed. It takes a train ~300 meters to come to a full stop from 50mph. Dont stand in front of either. Its a bit of an irresponsible comment to make OP. The average citizen might get the wrong idea. Theres no no magic tech in Fillmore & Western trains that makes them stop shorter than other trains. Physics is physics. The distance traveled depends on the speed of the train at the time the brakes were applied.
