What I do when I HAVE to buy hardwood charcoal...open the bag(s) a little bit, put a tarp under it and slowly roll over it with your vehicle, back and forth, until it's powdery...small effort, big rewards!
My great grandma told me she used to do this to crush her black walnuts.

Material List for LF73 murky water filtration system:
1) two 5 gallon food grade buckets with lids
2) one bag of Royal Oak hardwood 100% natural lump charcoal
3) one bag of Vigoro small, round pea gravel
4) one bag of Pavestone natural play sand
5) one plastic spigot set
6) one barrel or bucket to grind and clean materials
7) a drill to make a hole for the spigot and holes in the lids and bottom of the buckets
8) old cotton tshirts or cotton pillowcases
9) dust protection (goggles, mask, gloves, etc.)

make your own berkey. filter! buy the filters during big sale. then look through several videos how to make using stock pots or even food grade buckets.

Ive spent a long time researching water purification. Filtration and purification are not the same thing and should never be confused as being the same. My goal has always been to remove fluoride because fluoride molecules are smaller than water molecules. So for me it's like, what the heck, how do you filter something smaller than water molecules? There are a few ways to do so, but this put me on point of trying to understand how to remove viruses and other impurities which are smaller than water. It's an interesting concept to ponder for sure and very challenging to say the least. I just stumbled onto your channel and you had me at hello.

Great video. I just discovered your channel and I've already binged watched a few videos. Have you done any videos on disinfecting water after filtering?
What I've learned in my few decades of living, also 😁, is to have a good supply of iodine handy. Place 5 drops of 2% iodine per litre of water and let sit 30 minutes after filtering if there is a possibility of pathogens that cause disease. Do not add any disinfecting agent before filtering because the pathogens can hide in the solids of the pre-filtered water and not be touched by the disinfectant.
Iodine should only be for short term use then switch to another method for awhile then back to iodine if needed. Children and pregnant women may be affected by it.
The other method is using Aquatabs which can be used continuously but have a much shorter shelf life of about 5 years.
Some people can't ingest iodine.
Bleach has an effective shelf life of less than one year. Elemental iodine can last indefinitely.
None of these are ffective against Cryptosporidium.
A rolling boil of the water for a few minutes is the most effective method.
Hey fren, you can purchase chlorine pellets used for disinfecting wells. They have a shelf life of about 10 yrs if you put the bag in mylar and vacuum seal. We keep one in the old freezer I use for dry storage.

Just some ideas, if you separate each material in the bucket it will be easier to clean and maintain and reuse for additional uses. Like cloth or pillow cases for each layer. This is very similar to an aquarium filter with mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration. Great idea and practical application!
Some people even incorporate UV as a final part for sterilization.
I'm thinking that since the gravel and sand could be reused, maybe adding a cloth or cheesecloth in between those two to clean later might be easier than having them all together since the carbon should be replaced.
Other than that, dynamic, good brotha!
I like your idea. I think I’ll add one more. Cut up window screen between layers to give rigidity with the cloth.

So, I saw that you can also use a clay pot with the charcoal, sand, and gravel which would be a much slower process but could be used to maybe filter water for future use? Also besides drops of chlorine what else can we use to kill any bacteria, parasites, viruses that might be lurking in the water. I know that Amazon has a filter straw.

I love it and your enthusiasm is so catchy. Here's a thought..since you saw it needs 5 runs to be super clear, then why not have 5 of those systems set up by hoses to feed one into the other in a step shelf system. Another thing, I believe it would be best if you poured into the mixture rather than above the closed pillowslip. And we forgot to boil it to get rid of the germs.

Thank you for all your effort. i hand drilled a pump off my natural spring. I've got about 20 years worth of test strips and equipment for testing the water.
I found an old pump in my grandpa's Barn years ago and saved it. I replaced the leathers in the hand pump.. Not myself I took it to a professional he actually looked up the instructions and did it with me. It works great. Test came back with the highest mineral content. Pure water with high pH.
There is so much info for all of us to survive you just have to find it because they tried really hard to make us forget all of it.

Lead, there are no words. Washing the pebbles and sand is like washing the starch off of rice prior to cooking. I am blessed to have a Berkey, but I see the importance of having a backup to the backup. SHTF happens and you do not have access to or cannot find filters, this would definitely be a plan! Thank you so much. I tried to explain this to my neighbor, because we are prepping for what looks like is about to happen. We have old time water wells and stock tanks. I wouldn't feel safe drinking either one without filtering the water.
When I was little we drank well water that wasn't filtered. But for years we have heard that isn't safe anymore because of ground water contamination.
My grandparents had a well that we drank out of too! We would drink it without a second thought. It tasted funny because we had city water where I lived. But, as kids running and playing in that hot sun, water was water, so cool and refreshing!
You can get your water tested to see if you need to filter it. During an emergency though it’s always a good idea to filter because an earthquake or something else could have opened up and changed how clean the water is. So personally I would filter in an emergency until I could get it tested again when things settled down.
Finally, somebody that explains perfectly the whole process. I tried, but it came out "dirty" not knowing the whole process.

Thank you Lead for sharing your knowledge and skills. I’m not suggesting you do this with your Berkey, but I’d be curious what the “mudslide” water would like like after going through the Berkey. Maybe Berkey will donate one to you to experiment with.
I’ve also heard of using food grade diatomaceous earth (to kill viruses) and bentonite clay (similar to the charcoal, but also ads essential minerals back into the water). Both the charcoal and the clay absorb chemicals, toxins...and can also make pond/stagnant water taste more palatable.

The charcoal is to me the most important part of the filter. It takes out the chemicals in the water. So I would use more when I make my filter.

Led this is Sooooo Awesome 🙌 I have a Berkey for about 5 years now and Love it. I clean the filters every six months and they're still like new and passing the dye test and everything 🙏🏼 We all know how expensive the filters are to replace so in a SHTF situation finding and using water from a ditch, pond ect and then pouring that murky water into the Berkey to filter would really tax the system and significantly shorten the life of the filters..... so building your system is still necessary when you own a Berkey system or any other system for that matter. Your system could clean out all the garbage and then the Berkey, Brita, etc can handle it from there! God Bless You and the Family for helping the Masses 🙏🏼❤

I live in the country and have my own well and it's so funny how some people react, when I tell them. They love the water because it doesn't smell/taste like chlorine. It's like they think I go out and pump it myself or something.

No folks! It has its own pump, and I've never run out of water in 8 years. Even when I filled up a huge above ground pool in the summer that was 32ft long by 16ft wide by 52 inches deep. It took 3 days to fill (I didn't run it at night) but it worked great and didn't affect my water pressure at all.

Awesome! Made these when I was a kid and the only thing you'd need different is adding more carbon. Remember you want two inches of carbon AFTER its cleaned. If there isn't then the end result is what happens. We used creek water for tests. Love it! Showing how easy it can be for those who don't know. Love your videos and personality. Love it fam!
I don't understand when do he need to add it before he put the sand
@@sharekkamoore the sand weighs down the carbon, and makes it smooth going through rather than hitting carbon first and moving it. Remember it's a powder and you want water hitting the big parts(stones) first so it doesn't get moved around and not work properly. If your sand and powder were all moved and uneven your filter won't filter it all out, and you'll get sand in your spigot.

Watching now, (on my 55" screen, commenting on this11"). An observation: When not a demo as this fine gentleman does here. conditioning the system, omit the product tank, set the filter on 2 cinder blocks, keep the filter topped off till end goal and reassemble in the garage or other for use. Here in the UK there does not seem to be the same drive for self reliance in cases of emergency. So called "Preppers" are somehow labelled as "Nut cases" which kinda put a lot of people of the idea. I am ex military and have always been someone who plans for the worst but hopes for the best, but with that mindset it still allows me to live a full and happy life knowing I and my immediate family will be ok. Berkey Filters are available over here, but costly, however last year we ordered the XL and love it. Making provision for water purification is something every person should consider and I thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Living on cape cod we are always loosing power.
I have a barrel gravity filter required no power ,I use what you used in video but I also have a layer of aquarium lava rock. I RUN THIS IN THE RAIN BARRELS IT CLEANS AS YOU STATED BUT the use of a cheap 15 dollar gravity filter barrel allows for aeration. When the well goes down this is amazingy tasty
It’s incredible how well this works. It’s even working 10 times better the next day of use. It’s just gonna keep getting better and better with time.

You can’t beat this easy system.
i think its worth pointing out that this only _filters_ water, it doesnt _sterilize_ it. if youre pulling water from a puddle, stream, river, pond, or lake, you will still need to boil this or treat it to make it safe to drink. even with after passing through the filter. the filter wont catch things like giardia. also, the sand and pea gravel are good for filtering out larger particulates like leaves, twigs, etc. if you dont have to worry about big stuff floating in the water youre gonna filter, and since he has a fine mesh pillowcase around all of it, you dont need the peagravel and sand as the bag will catch that (like a coffee filter) youre better off having an entire 5 gallon bucket full of charcoal in the pillowcase. and even better so if its activated charcoal (more surface area in your carbon) but you cant make that at home unless youre familiar with a fair bit of chemistry or have a way to pump large amounts of super heated steam through the charcoal. (codyslab here on youtube just recently did a video on this. the lemon juice or vinegar videos dont work) so for prepping, make sure you have a way to sterilize or boil all the water you are filtering.

Berkey has had to curtail making more of these, and may be in trouble, sadly. People are having problems getting them anyway. The expense is the stainless and the filters of biochar. Your video is a life saver!

You don’t have to buy the Berkey system… You can buy just the black filters and then rig up your own stainless steel pots, or food grade plastic buckets. There are videos on UA-cam that show you how to do it.

The water is clean but will need to be boiled or treated with bleach or iodine to remove bacteria.
You can set a glass jar out in the sun for a few hours. That will work.

Activate that charcoal! (I just learned how from your video on that). This is how the US Cavalry filtered the bog water they drank during westward expansion. It's not always pretty (and you can do some things to clarify your source water first, too), but it IS effective. Great video.
