It's not really the size of any particular force that matters, it's that force's capabilities. For example, the PLA is large but has not ability of operate away from its own territory - despite Beijing's endless bloviating, neighboring Taiwan presents a series of tactical and strategic dilemma they have no answer for (yet) because the party's forces are ill-trained, poorly led, unevenly equipped and except for a brief border war in the 70's (which they handily lost to Vietnam), they have zero combat experience since the human wave attacks of the Korean War.

The thing to note with all these is that Britain is the only one with nuclear powered carriers and China is the only one who is making one currently. They're horribly expensive to keep and maintain so most countries don't bother with them.

@@Sauce_Sensei Well, the carrier group has a dedicated supply ship so that is really it's only mild weakness. With Aegis systems (probably upgraded by now but that's the last system I remember them having) on cruisers, advanced anti-sub systems on the destroyers and the carrier air wing, along with passive and active enemy radar jamming, CWAS, and other classified defense measures it makes it a tough son of a bitch to sink. It would quite literally take China and Russia's entire navy to take out an entire carrier group. It can be done, but it would be done at a horrifyingly high manpower and ship cost. The only thing those groups MIGHT be a little bit vulnerable to is drone barrages.

I am an American, and a 30-year veteran of the United States Armed Forces. The United States of America (USA) desires to be on good relations with all nations as the USA has no "natural" or historical enemies. In addition, the USA is probably the most diverse population in the world. The proof of what I'm saying is in the reality that if the USA was intent on world domination, we relatively easily secure the north and south American continents and then move into Africa and southwest Asia. It's painful for me to even theorize this, as it's a complete contradiction to the foundations of the USA. The USA isn't, and has never been interested in world domination, but in promoting liberty for all people.

Exactly. The problem is that everything in this world can be perceived in alternative ways, and it's often other countries like Russia or China or Iran who take advantage and try and shape false narratives around these things and make it seem like the U.S. is "imperialist"... but meanwhile, in the late 21st century, the only countries who are _actually_ imperialist, are Russia & China who actively have ambitions on invading, occupying and annexing their neighbors, Russia having done this many times already, and currently doing it to Ukraine, whilst China dreams about doing so to Taiwan. And these are the same countries who call America "imperialist and aggressor".

      @@leslieallen7070two reasons:
      1) as a deterrent, to keep potential hostile nations in check. Hostile nations will think twice before invading any country that has US bases there.
      2) if we remove all military forces/equipment from a country, and that country is attacked.
It'll cost more to ship everything back, and the enemy forces will have time to get a strong hold.
Thus costing more lives to get them out.

@@leslieallen7070he majority of the land was used to purchase resources during the war and received in peace treaties.
The bases were initially placed to stabilize regions while Europe and Asia rebuilt. Then they served to assure our allies of our commitment to mutual defense. Now they exist to fuel our economy, the local economies surrounding bases, at this point its cheaper/easier to keep them, and our allies want them.
As patronizing as it sounds the bases are basically security blankets. Our allies could drop them and move on but they aren't because they like the comfort and security.

As % of GDP, US defence budget is on par with Russia, China and Pakistan. The US defence budget also includes housing, pensions and veterans benefits etc etc which is a huge chunk. Add in the Purchasing Power Parity and you will find that US spends less money on "defence" than you think.

That's not entirely true. In modern times, I would agree that the U.S. is not out to conquer, as in annex and take over other lands. Instead, in the modern age, the U.S. does a form of "soft conquest" in which they influence other nations through economic and political power. If the need arises, the U.S. is still capable of "direct influence" through force of arms (as in Iraq and Afghanistan) - but never to conquer or take over those countries, but rather put in governments which are essentially puppets.
Historically speaking, though, the United States has had no problem with conquest - the entire west was conquered through force of arms and subjugation of various Native American tribes. Hell, one could even argue that Hawaii was conquered by force of arms, as well as the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico.
I say these things as a patriot - I wore the flag on my shoulder and deployed with 3-2 SBCT. My point is, the United States would not be the country it is today without conquest. The United States has definitely conquered, for better or worse. It's ignorant and unpatriotic to turn a blind eye to the mistakes this nation has made, and the blood it has shed over the course of history.

when we left the country, the afghan army was left in charge of their own fate, and they crumbled as we left. If anything it is a massive waste of time and resources because afghanistan wasn't able to last a week protecting themselves despite the massive amount of training and weapons we gave them.

The sad thing is, that if the military did what you wanted and cut back on spending, you wouldn't understand why everything started costing more. You'd probably blame corporate greed or something.
Is there waste? Yes, of course. But it's also keeping the trade lanes free for us, keeping commerce flowing, keeping our military on top in a world with Russia and China, and pushing technology further and further ahead.
Many breakthroughs made for the military filter down to civilian use in time. You are literally investing in the future when you pay taxes to the military. Civilized people sleep peacefully at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Yeah at our cost of living, Healthcare and education! Military is big but the people suffer here because we don't get any benefits from our taxes that pays for all that !!
