Thanks. I bought a used medium big green egg with a broken fire box. After watching I saved myself a whole lot of money. Finished the repair per you youtube. It is great. Thanks much,Mike
I will try to do something similar with the my cracked fire ring. I do think that the fire ring will be simpler but I will follow the steps demonstrated here especially using the galvanized stainless steel wire, thank you for sharing your experience and expertise with us
Properties of materials (i.e. metal expansion and contraction and eventual failure) does not bode well for this complex fix in the long term. Might work for a period but high heat will eventually cause it to fail. It could also act as a vice and crush your egg more. That said it's been 5 years nearly how is it holding up (i.e. I'm willing to accept that it could hold up). That said I use my egg at least 2x a week and take it up to 900 degrees on a number of occasions so I'm curious if you also do high temp cooks.
Great video! Thank you so much! What gauge and type of wire do you recommend? The video said electrical but it doesn't look like cooper and I can't imagine it's aluminum. I heard J-B Weld works but I think this would be better.
Thanks for the idea but I strongly recommend no to paint this firebox for the high temperatures can release the chemicals of the paint mixture turning your food into a toxic meal. That explains why this part comes unpainted.
or you could get a new one sent to you through warranty, even if you bought one it has to be cheaper than the cost of tools and time it would take......just me though
yes, good point. After all, everyone is exactly like you and is an original owner with a full warranty option. A comment about this being a waste of time from someone that clearly found this video, watched the content and then went to the comment section to discredit the need... at least there is humor in that.
It's not a waste of time if you bought your Kamado grill used. Those lifetime warranties are not transferable. I bought a used Vision Grills Kamado - a new fire bowl is going to cost me over $80. With that in mind, spending an hour to fix a cracked one seems like time well spent. Thanks, grandkvisten!
Will - I contacted Vision Grills customer service (help@visiongrills.com or 877-917-4273 (dial 2 for customer service)) about getting the firebox replaced as the one in the used grill I purchased had cracked and separated into two pieces. Their reply was "Without a receipt and registration within the first thirty days, we can offer you a fire bowl at 50% off at $50.00 plus shipping of $32.99". I did not purchase a new firebowl but decided to try another repair method that I had seen on youtube. Reid Susmark posted a short video in 2015 entitled 'Big Green Egg Firebox Repair' which shows an adhesive called Flexbar Rocksett. Flexbar claims temperature resistance up to 2000F for this adhesive and that it is 'Non-toxic - odorless - non-flammable'. I purchased a 2-ounce bottle (way more than enough for the repair) for $15 on ebay and tried it on my firebowl last week. I glued it, let it dry for a day, and then test fired it in the grill (without food), taking the temperature up to 750 degrees. So far it is holding fine. I plan to use the grill several more times to see if it continues to hold up and then post a comment on Mr. Susmark's video.
i have the vision grill problem as well. Wanting to see how the adhesive is doing. I'm looking into doing that or just ordering another firebowl...thanks
The Flexbar Rocksett did not do too well. Held up through the curing heat run and a couple cooks but then the joint had separated again. I cleaned up the joint and glued it back together again this time using Rutland Furnace Cement. I got an 8 oz container for just a few $ at the local hardware store. It's only been through 4 heat cycles but is holding fine so far.....
I just trashed my ceramic and took a friend's advice, who owned ceramics for years...the red ones and the green ones. Anyway, I bought a Goldens' Cast Iron Kamado, made of 3/8 inch ductile cast iron and powder coated exterior so no rust ever. It will literally last forever. Great heat retention, superior cooker. I highly recommend it. I'll never own ceramic again.
@@ToddMcDurmont The Goldens' Cast Iron Kamado was very appealing to me but doesn't care iron crack, and rust off the paint comes off? I had painted iron grills and in all of them the paint came off with time and high heat. I wonder if this will happen to the Goldens' grills.
But if the fire box cracks again then another $98. I want to know if the Kamado Joe fire box will for the Kamado Vision. The Kamado Joe Firebox is sectional; no worries about cracking.
For years there's been one vertical crack in the firebox of my BGE. It's about 1/8" wide and hasn't changed at all but... I'm wondering if it is changing any of the cooking characteristics of my Egg. I'm having a harder time controlling the temp during a long smoke (12-14 hrs). Years ago, I could get it to 225, go to sleep and it would still be there when I woke up. This solution here looks great for a unit that is pretty much shattered but, it's a lot of work. I'm going to try filling it in with potters clay and see if that works well enough. That will be a 2 minute project. Any thoughts on that??? thanks much.
@@baccaratbob Annealed wire is what I used. It's hard to find except very thin, so I triple wrapped everything. Give it a good heating without food the first time to burn off any residue from manufacturing.
Why waste your time doing this, if you buy a Kamado Joe, the firebox comes with a lifetime warranty ! Lol ! Just go to your retailer and have it replaced !
Not everybody has access to kamado grill stores or are covered by their warranties. Maybe they live in the country side or outside of the U.S. Perhaps they are not the original owners of their kamados. This video definitely helps more people than your close mind comment. By the way, I live in the capital city of modern Kamados (Atlanta) with plenty of these stores everywhere and have a Big Kamado Joe. Good Day!
Good comment. I live in Canada and just realized mine (only owner) was cracked after years of use. Waiting to hear back via email, but a co-worker had a free replacement shipped free of charge after a similar email. Kamado for life! Ribs baby.

Or you may have a Primo XL Oval like I do and while the firebox is covered under warranty, the shipping is not and where I live it was $50. When I put the new firebox in, it cracked the first cook. So I could keep paying $50 and replacing them or do something like this.

Good demo. We used this method to repair a kamado primo firebox that was badly cracked.
How long did this repair last? I've got a broken one now, and I'm trying to find the best repair method.
A Very professional repair, Thank you.
Good repair!!
You can use waterglas as a high temperature resistent glue too!!

Cleaver stuff has it held up 2022 nice to watch hope you still kicking
Won't all those holes with the high temperatures achieved cause even more catastrophic cracking?
Doesen't fixing cement work as well?
@grandkvisten -- how did this hold up over the years?
great idea. Will try it myself tonight
Awesome work

You should not be using galvanized wire. When heated it emits toxic fumes.
