Those things are awesome! I will definitely have to give them a try. I have three workbenches in my shop. At least one of the benches would benefit from them!
What an amazing idea! Brilliant Thanks..... In a side note if you are short of space in your garage come workshop and don’t have room for a large bench ( also wood is bloody expensive now) take a trip to Ikea and pick up two or three of their square shape butchers block units about 600 x 500 on wheels and made of solid wood to open shelves and two rubber locking wheels . They are around 70 gbp 80 euros and make a very good workbench . They are made of hard beech I think . I do have space but I have used several of these for independent work stations so use one as a drop in wind up router table, planer , sanding station for the up down sander can’t remover the name!! I’m currently converting one to make a small workbench for inside my den in the house and I’m going to be using the design of the dogs in this great video . They are a really cheap way of making a strong bench and by adding a vice and dogs you have an excellent small workstation add 3 more and bolt them together a huge work area.
Very nicely done! I'm at the research stage if building my bench and these little gizmos are a brilliant way to achieve a high-tech functionality. So kind of you to include other creators' versions of these type of dogs. John Heisz made some amazing ones, along with his whole bench. I look forward to your videos. There is an aire to them that is quite calming and peaceful. I'm glad these bench dogs didn't come at the expense of a little bug's life.
Keith, absolute genius idea! brilliant, so now my weekend is taken up with improving my vice and making pop up bench dogs! Have a good one, and thanks for the excellent vid.
Right now I'm building my first personalized workbench. It's not perfect but I'm learning what I like and what I don't. I made dogs like the ones you made here and they work great, made it even easier for me that most of the issues were already troubleshooted. Thank you
Even after your video about getting rid of your homemade MFT top I was still fixed on following your vid on making one, but now……I’m sold. These make far more sense. They look good, they’re functional and potentially can add as many as you need depending on the project requirements. I was a little concerned about the amount of contact the dogs would have with the bench and would it be relying on too little risking breaking the top of the bench but guessing that’s the sell for a thicker work too. Great work and thanks for sharing.
Nice. A bit like the bump-to-open cabinet door mechanisms. I wonder if the dogs will add to the concern you raised previously with torquing the movable jaw. Thanks for the idea!
Am I missing something here? Presumably the pop up part needs to rest against something underneath the bench to allow it to be push activated, or do you have a really thick bench and didn't drill all the way through??
Great video. I have a Paulk style bench with 20mm holes I bought a handful of 20mm socket head cap screws to go in the holes for stops and to raise work off the workbench. It was a really cheap way to get consistent dogs.
I really should have explained in the video, sorry. Yes, it's not a through hole. But if your top is not as thick as mine, a board underneath is another good option
hi Keith, great idea 💪🏻 I'm not sure, but I think these pop-up thinks can be purchased at IKEA 🤔 They are used to avoid cabinet doors to bang while closing. but I'm not sure if they are strong enough to push up your bench dogs. 🙋🏼♂️ Michael
Clever bugger, I think my workbench would have to be a little thicker than it is, but it’s certainly something I’m going to check out. Highly recommend your wax as well, it’s ace 👍
I knew you made this video, took me forever to find it again. Getting ready to build a new bench and utilizing these instead of doing the top with the holes everywhere. Cant remember what its called.
They're brilliant Keith. Definitely a must have In any workshop. I'm still using a workmate at the moment as I need to have a good sort out in my workshop to see where I can build a decent bench. Great video Keith 👍🏻👍🏻
great idea. what have you got under workbench top? or how thick is the top? . beast of a drill bit !! I thought you were going to lathe the 28mm down to 20mm. Did you space the depth to vice jaw opening ?
Keith, is there enough material behind the hole on the vice jaw? Did you think about moving the holes closer to the bench to give more support behind? I'm planning a similar vice and dog hole setup and been going round in circles with the locations of pretty much all of it.
They are push too open you can get sort or long and magnetic & different colours we use them for are no handels cupboards doors but l must say a dam good idea 👍
Nice vid Keith, with an MFT top (18mm) would there be sufficient depth to incorporate such a system and keep the dogs deep enough in the holes to be sturdy?
I fitted some ready made ones to my mft workbench. They're Ganwei ones that banggood sent me. They have a flat and round side to each pop up. Very handy. Veritas do them too but difficult to find.👍
Looking good. The only downside I see so far is that you cannot vary the height of the dogs to accommodate for very flat stock. Nonetheless an idea to keep in mind
Aha, the effectiveness of the micro-adjust hammer is often overlooked ... ;-) (There's also a lube joke here but I'm not going to make it ...) (also, check your emails ...)

"great fun to play with" is a highly underrated criteria 👍🙂🇦🇺
That is a brilliant idea. Thanks Keith. This is why I don't miss your video

Cracking idea, now I just need a thick enough bench to fit them. Great video.
a very clever solution indeed, Keith!
I'm so glad you showed how they are used. I had no idea what they were going to be for.
Pretty brilliant, whoever came up with it first :^) Thanks for a great video! I needed this for my workbench build!

I love this idea, Keith! Thank you for making the video.
Got mine ordered before they’re all gone. Just what I’ve been looking for a bench inspired by biro.
Thanks for the mention Kieth they are really useful and fun to play with
How deep did you make the dog hole in your bench? Im not sure if i just missed you mentioning it.
Plus, THEYRE FUN TO PLAY WITH! lost it, lol!! It’s the little things in life isn’t it? They look great Keith, as per usual!
Stunning idea!
Excellent solution to a common problem… Well done dude..
Nice work on the bench dogs Keith! Thanks for sharing the video with us!👍💖😎JP
Nice job and another excellent idea.
Great video! What did you do with the screw, washer and other thing that was in the KLYNGTSK packets?
Nice. A bit like the bump-to-open cabinet door mechanisms. I wonder if the dogs will add to the concern you raised previously with torquing the movable jaw. Thanks for the idea!
Great idea
Very clever!
Just ordered the push to open catches off Amazon, genius idea. 👏🏻👍🏻
Andrew Klein also makes these. Love the push to open mechanism. That's a great idea.

obvious question: I presume its not a through hole as the dog needs to push up on something. or did you add something underneath?

Bloody brilliant 😳. Very impressed with those dogs Keith. Particularly in conjunction with the vice dogs. Out of the top drawer, as ever 👍

One more addition to the wish list. Great ideas.
This is perfect. I am going to do this!

Thanks
What a fantastic idea 💡
Nice one Keith. Nicely explained. Great partner to the vice.👌
They're brilliant Keith. Definitely a must have In any workshop. I'm still using a workmate at the moment as I need to have a good sort out in my workshop to see where I can build a decent bench. Great video Keith 👍🏻👍🏻
Love the old workmate, mine now has an MFT style top on it, great bit of kit
I was wondering in the last video what those circles in the vice were :D
👌
great idea. what have you got under workbench top? or how thick is the top?
. beast of a drill bit !! I thought you were going to lathe the 28mm down to 20mm.
Did you space the depth to vice jaw opening ?
Great idea. So simple. Tony

Excellent, Keith! They work great! 😃
I'm definitely going to make some of those!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
So how do they stay, whats going on under ?
Id be interested to hear how you get on with the round version after you've used them loads!?
We shall see! 👌
So many double entendras! How did you keep a staight face, in fact I think I saw a smirk at one point!
They are push too open you can get sort or long and magnetic & different colours we use them for are no handels cupboards doors but l must say a dam good idea 👍
Ye more ideas for when I get round to upgrading my workbench. 🙂
Cheers Karl, they're brilliant to play with
Good job!
So useful.
Nice vid Keith, with an MFT top (18mm) would there be sufficient depth to incorporate such a system and keep the dogs deep enough in the holes to be sturdy?
If you check out the link for Mark at small space creations I think he did something very similar with a thinner top 🤔
I fitted some ready made ones to my mft workbench. They're Ganwei ones that banggood sent me. They have a flat and round side to each pop up. Very handy. Veritas do them too but difficult to find.👍
Lots of sensual visuals on this one. I like it… I think ? 🙂
Looking good. The only downside I see so far is that you cannot vary the height of the dogs to accommodate for very flat stock. Nonetheless an idea to keep in mind
Just put a board under the workpiece
Brilliant!
Great idea!
Those bench dogs fantastic, but those shorts are fantasticer 👍🤨🤣
Well done!
Thanks
excellent!
excellent.
Cheers David
Nice
Nice!
Thank you Janet
02:00 so THAT'S how you're supposed to sand dowels without sexy music starting in the distance...
Aha, the effectiveness of the micro-adjust hammer is often overlooked ... ;-)
(There's also a lube joke here but I'm not going to make it ...)
(also, check your emails ...)
🤣 thanks Tim
I’m assuming your holes didn’t go all the way thru hence giving the pop up a base
Yes that's correct. If it's a thinner top than mine, it'd be easy enough to mount a board to the underside 👍
4:52 out of context clipable
🤣
I need to build a proper bench first, then get a proper vice before I can worry about dogs. Why does lumber have to be so expensive? 😕😒
👍🍻
Another idea I will stole you without any shame :) !
Brilliant!
