    Not sure if you know this but the attack times are reversed on this unit. Fastest to the left. Slowest to the right.

    Thanks for this. I think the level of Bluey is slightly higher than the UAD...I'm picking that as a main reason it sounds 'better.' Better matched levels would have made this a closer comparison.

    Thank you for this. Do you use one mono bluey on the vocal and after some reverb and delay stereo or stereo widener or how do you get to this result on the voice? Whilst recording or mixing? Thanx for any answer and best regards

    Dude, you're using way too much compression on the plugin. Are the compression levels exactly the same with the hardware?

  • @realjoeljohnson

    I have to say based on your video, and some of the others about CLA 76 Bluey mode vs the Bluey, I can see the usefulness of owning a Bluey for tracking while you can blend in instances of the plugin. I would use the Bluey to color my tracks going into pro tools and then the plugin to do more passive compression to my tracks to glue them together in the end. So recording through the bluey and then using CLA 76 on my buses. I don't think plugins suck compared to analog gear, I think they work uniquely different and there is an argument to have both. I know I want to get one of these units for my studio just based on all the audio samples, reviews, and knowledge of the history behind this unit. Being an exact replica of the CLA unit, that interests me for sure. I was deciding whether to buy any more outboard gear after I sell off what I have, I definitely see the value in having one channel for tracking through for doing vocals, guitar and bass, which is all I am going to do. If I was to need to process MIDI instruments I am going to want the cleaner CLA 76 plugin. That way I can adjust my settings in the box and automate if needed. I still want a bluey for tracking but the plugins are useful especially for people who mix live or do live recordings with high track counts which are unrealistic to print one by one. I do think some hardware is good to have vs a plugin, like a real preamp or 76 style compressor for tracking. But there are a ton of great plugins. I'm realistically going to use Rbass and not a hardware MAXX BCL unit from Waves. Just my thoughts. I felt like they both sounded good, but there is an argument for a hardware bluey for certain things. I liked your examples.

      @@OliverShillito Yeah exactly, most people listening to our music wouldn't know the difference between a track done with plugins vs analog hardware, and then there is the whole vocal chain thing, but what normal music listener knows what a vocal chain is or cares what an artist used to get their sound, it's the artists and producers who want to get that sound who care. While I am sure the manufacturers would love us to all agree analog is better, some software just works and I'm not going to argue with it. Haha.

      @@OliverShillito there is always a chance I may win my dream vocal chain from one of the mega music stores, but if I have to buy it which is most likely, I am on a budget with being a full time student; not working while attending school, financial aid is scarce so getting what I need to record is possible in a certain budget, this fits that budget and is also a great piece of gear that works in a certain way that shines on rock, pop and rap vocals which is most of what I record, I also hear it shines on guitar and bass which is the other half of what I record and that is what I am most excited to hear. I am curious to put electric and acoustic guitar through it. Most of my other material is MIDI and works well with a plugin CLA 76 Bluey mode and I have a ton of analog modeled plugins that do things really well. Hardware wise I think if I was to add a compressor to the studio, this thing is the secret sauce I am most likely to add. Thanks for the recommendation. I have been researching what a ton of people say about it and audio demos too. My first interest in the unit was the plugin, I know the hardware works different. Well talk soon man I may ask you more questions.

    Hey man, thanks for your helpful review... Interested to buy this unit... but I'm quite confused about the attack and release values mentioned here by Chris, as it seems this unit knobs are in reversed behaviour from the original unit. Anybody could confirm this please? Also I heard several users had "bursts" and hiss problems with their units, and Black Lion Audio gone dead silent on these issues and/or not providing proper after-sales customer service. I live in EU. I'm really hesitant. Any thoughts?

    • @OliverShillito
      @OliverShillito  4 місяці тому

      Sorry for the late reply. I’ve used 3 of these units now and never had an issue and yes they are reversed. Well the attack knob is reversed compared to a normal 1176 but this is by design to mimic Chris’. They are fantastic units and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend one!

    Bro I love this loud and proud analog approach you have. Everyone's always afraid to say the truth on how much hardware blows plugins out of the water.
    How I like to explain it is, plugins sound like an effected vocal/track where hardware just sound like.. "the track", even after it's been processed it still sounds organic. It's hard to explain but it's very obvious IMO
