Sam Bell, Elvis's childhood friend who was black.. said when they went to the movies it was blacks on one side & whites on other. Elvis would sneak over to Sam and they sat in the middle of the isle together. Elvis broke alot of barriers. Soul doesnt have a color. Great reaction!

I have been a fan of Elvis since the 50s when he came on the scene. He was not only a fabulous entertainers but he was a compassionate and generous person who never forgot his roots. He was loved by everyone who knew him. Thank you for your great reaction. 👏👏🇨🇦
Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1935. He and his mother and father lived there until he was 14. They moved to Memphis in his early teens. In Tupelo he lived in the black community and was very, very poor! He was accepted by the blacks much more than his own race. When he talks about THE GHETTO. he is talking about HIS ghetto too. You don't have to be from CHICAGO to live in a ghetto! He never forgot his roots! I am from the same area, just 15 miles away in Mississippi. I just wasn't as poor as he was! He was the most generous human ever born! He paid hospital bills for children whose parents couldn't pay them, he boughts homes for hundreds of people, and his favorite thing was to buy cars for people who could not buy one! He was, is, and always will be the KING OF ROCK AND ROLL. Not only because of his fantastic music but because he was such a wonderful humanitarian. He recorded 850+ songs and made 33 movies! Jump down that rabbit hole and find out all you can about the king, his life, and his music! He was fantastic! No one before or after has done what ELVIS PRESLEY did!!! Elvis was steeped in black culture from his childhood environment. Skin color aside, the culture had just as much influence on him as anybody else growing up in similar surroundings. By the testimony of those who knew him best, I'm convinced he was genuine in his appreciation for not only the culture, but the people. There are countless stories of him helping people from different walks of life. Kudos on the reaction.
Beautiful reaction. The racism claims started from the magazine “Sepia”. An anonymous “Person from the Street” alleged that they heard Elvis say “the only thing N*groes can do for me is buy my records and shine my shoes” on a tv program earlier that year. They claimed to remember him saying it on the Boston program called “Person to Person”. Jet Magazine did an investigative report on the claims and the learned that 1.) Elvis was never on that show and 2.)At that point in his life Elvis had never been to Boston. It was also discovered that the owner of Sepia magazine had been openly racist himself. Many believe that Sepia magazine was trying to put a wedge between Elvis’ fans and destroy Elvis’ career in the process. Unfortunately less people saw the Jet magazine article that proved these claims were false, so people still believe that Elvis said these things.

@Renee Bush: everyone who says that about elvis is an idiot. no one loved black culture as much as elvis. no white artist had as many friends and fans among the black population in the 50s, 60s, 70s as elvis. elvis presley regularly donated to 50 charities. among them were several aid organizations that help poor black families. the presley family has built two houses in elvis' hometown alone where poor black people can live cheaply.
It's maddening to think that one racist comment that was completely false still follows Elvis around to this day over 65 years later !!!

Quincy Jones is guilty too. He made a general statement that he didn’t want to work with Elvis because he was a racist. He didn’t back it up at all. The brightest lights attract the most insects!

As for Elvis, I believe the many, many statements made by other famous black musicians, artists and civil rights activists (black people) who have met Elvis in person: Everyone has nothing but good things to say about Elvis Presley. The connection between Elvis Presley and that of black artists, musicians and his black fans is very well documented. Everyone always says good things about Elvis. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar or just trying to cause trouble. Since the 50's until today there is only one or two who say this nonsense and lies.
To put things in perspective as far as the era Elvis started his singing career, Emmett Till was still alive and would be for the following two years. This is what he was up against and I have mad respect for the fact that he stayed loyal to who he was and refused to turn his back on the black community even if it meant he'd lose his career and very possibly his life. He was a truly genuine remarkable man.
He grew up in Tupelo Mississippi ghetto in black community. He went to the black church from a child. He moved with entire family to Memphis when he was 14 in hopes of his daddy finding work. The Presley’s lived in a few different projects in Memphis. In Tupelo he lived in a two room house. No indoor plumbing or electricity. Sometimes food was not there. Elvis never forgot his roots. The community of Black in Tupelo would share their food sometimes and his mama did too. They all helped each other. Elvis’ mama scrubbed floors and anything she could do to help. She was very protective of Elvis as his twin Jesse Garon was still born. Jesse arrived first and Elvis minutes later. They had no money for doctors. He was born in the shack his daddy and uncle built. Thank you for giving Elvis a fair evaluation. There are many people who accuse hum of stealing music. He always said what influenced him: Country, Gospel, and R&B.

Elvis was part of that culture. That’s all he knew. Him & his parents were Baptist. Everything he did was as much of him as anyone else. He was completely colorblind & knew it was ONLY the ignorant that felt that way. Like Elvis said

The Astrodome in Texas needed Elvis more than he needed them. Elvis was huge at the time, in a way even bigger than Michael Jackson in his day, because Elvis had a gigantic presence that made him very loved as a person.
Nothing can compare Elvis Presley. Elvis was and is simply too big for anything else. There will never be anything greater than Elvis Presley. By the way, most of the famous black people of the time also said that. Probably still today. Elvis the greatest king!

Elvis loved Memphis, he never moved away from it. As for the title "the King" that was not something he claimed, like you said, it was what others said of him BUT if he was ever asked about it his reply had been "there is only one King and that is God" he had extremely deep religious roots.. I love all of his gospel music, his emotions and beliefs come through his voice clear as a bell.

Elvis grew up in the ghetto. One of his best friends was a black child in Tupelo. He was just amazed why these artists weren't being played on all stations. Elvis felt his brothers should be acknowledged. Elvis didn't like being called King - he said there is only one King and that is Jesus Christ. He never once introduced anyone in his group as "they worked for him." He would say the "people who work with me " and then called their name out. He let me have time on stage to show how talented they were. He loved his group - all of them and did everything he could for them.
There are countless statements from people from the black population who met Elvis personally (including actors, musicians, artists, politicians, civil rights activists, etc.): Everyone says nothing but good things about Elvis Presley. this is also well documented. Elvis Presley regularly donated to 50 charities: including several organizations that help poor black people. the Presley family still does today. Little Richard: "Elvis has done more for us than any politician in the world"! James Brown: "Not only was I an Elvis Presley fan, but we were brothers!" B.B.King: "Elvis always came to us when we made music. He was one of us!". Chuck Berry: "You want me to say something about Elvis Presley? Elvis is bigger than everything else, Elvis will always be bigger than everything else. There will never be anything bigger than Elvis Presley!" Muhammad Ali: "Elvis Presley was the most beautiful and friendliest person I have met in my life. Elvis Presley is the greatest!"

Wow what a great reaction to such difficult subject matter -- subscribed!! One thing of note. You were right it was the people gave Elvis the title of King. He despised the label. It embarrassed him. Evidence of this was made public by Elvis himself. Elvis was called the King on stage one by a fan and he was recorded as stating that " THERE IS ONLY ONE KING, Jesus Christ." Elvis was HUMBLE. He was PART OF the engineering of Rock and Roll which CAME FROM the Blues and Gospel. THAT is what causes the confusion , so anyone with an agenda can use the evolution of the Blues and Rock music as "stealing" when it was just music and musicians and creative people taking music in a new direction. ELVIS WAS PART OF THIS MOVEMENT IN THE EARLY 1950s AND IT STARTED IN A BLACK CHURCHES, black southern Baptist churches.
Elvis never created Rock and Roll or black music, but he was instrumental in getting black music, the Blues, Gospel music, Jazz and Rockabilly music heard on a grand stage during a period of segregation and racism. Elvis was synergy, he was fusion, he was totally non-racist.
He provided a platform for this music and wanted ALL of America to get a taste of it like he did growing up in Shakerag (Mississippi ghetto) and Memphis. He created a whole new style of dance and clothing and hair and the way he performed on a stage was even more unique. When someone tells me Elvis STOLE black music... I reply back NO, he came up WITH IT as a kid and was responsible for fusing it with other genres and that brought a LOT of new faces and wallets to black music that no other artist had ever done (As Rufus mentioned in the video we just watched). I think the reason so many black figures of the day loved Elvis was because as BB King said Elvis TRULY MEANT IT. He took the music SERIOUS and shared it with the whole world.
As the great Isaac Hayes stated, "Elvis was a giant and influenced everyone in the business."

Keep playing Elvis and your subs and likes will go up. To think these people today don't stand up for their artist like that because it'sall about them. They all tried to tear him down, but he became the biggest, hottest artist there was. Even until today, 46 years after his death. He's just as big today as he way then. Even UA-cam is blowing up with Elvis and it's good to see him get his accolades and have racism finally removed from his name thanks to the documentary. I heard that rumor when I was young but I never believed it. It was something good in him that made me refuse to accept it. His looks, stature and jokester ways didn't hurt either. Ironically Elvis never liked being called the King & often responded that Jesus Christ is the only King. Elvis was basically "a bridge" that challenged the norms of the times. He also apparently received death threats besides financial cohesions for the principles that he stood for, but still he persisted. On a global scale his movies and music had a major impact. Being from the South Pacific originally & subsequently migrating to Australia during the 1960's & 70's , I like a lot of peers, were raised on Elvis. His messaging was always 'inclusive' and in a time when racial differences were prevalent, this was a refreshing new wind for change. RIP dearest soul! Great reaction video, thanks for sharing :D

Benny Goodman was a New York Jew that fell in love with the Dixieland and improvisational jazz music coming from African Americans in New Orleans during the 1920's. When Benny hit it big in the 1930's he hired the best African American musicians, writers and arrangers while demanding they be treated with respect.

What I'm suggesting is a very interesting article that explains more about why Elvis felt so connected to the black community, how MLK, Jr.'s death devastated him, and there are video clips throughout the article with interviews of people who knew Elvis. Here are a couple quotes at the beginning of the article that I hope will entice you to read it: Michael Ochs (a photojournalist) said "...a lot of people in retrospect attack Elvis for stealin' the black music and making it white. I say Elvis had a black soul with a white face". Elvis said "The Lord messed up on me in two ways - He didn't make me black and He didn't make me a bass singer".
Charlotte Observer June 1956 interview, "The Rock and roll phenomenon cracked Memphis's segregation laws." (Memphis World News June 1956) T he Ernest Withers photos of the1956 and 1957 WDIA Goodwill Revue and the Louie Robinson interview with Elvis "The truth about that Elvis Presley rumor." (Jet Magazine August 01, 1957) as well as other events all silenced by a anonymous rumor from Sepia Magazine. Early musicians could have been recognized back then.

It details Elvis' life from birth through the beginning of his career and dives deeper into his musical influences which included much more than the black church. His life story is as unique and fascinating as his talent. Also could you react to the director of the movie "ELVIS" interviewing a childhood friend. You'll get a kick out of his stories about Elvis. Baz Luhrmann interviews Elvis Presley's childhood friend Sam Bell (24:52).

You can't blame Elvis....He was in the black tent revivals starting when he was a little boy living on the wrong side of town in Tupelo, Mississippi. He didn't steal anything, he was taught how to let the feelings move him. Elvis didn't call himself King, everyone else did.
I like your reflection and that you appreciate the truth about people that would have wanted really know him and their reaction as compared to third parties that put their spin on it, some good and some not so good. I like your uptake and your reflection on Elvis's character and appreciated your reaction. As a matter of fact it is my understanding that he did not like being referred to as the king. He didn't get mad but he would either point to his black artist friend whoever that may be at the time of the interview and I believe one time he was on stage and he pointed his finger up upwards in the air the and he said there's only one king! Elvis was very humble and wanted to give credit to where credit was due he was influenced and inspired by black music and nearly exalted it more so it's a negative take when people said he appropriated he may have but it was not like stealing which has a negative connotation. And artists are supposed to be able to take what they want and crafted the way they want and put it out there the way they want. That's how art gets produced!

Most of the racist rumors about Elvis. Were actually started by his promoters and agent believing it would make him more acceptable to certain demographics of people. But the truth is when you have that level of talent and charisma you cross boundaries with no need for manipulation.
Elvis was so humble that he rejected the "king" label and said Fats Domino was the true king of rock.

Any time someone rises to the top, there are those who feel the need to tear him or her down. He didn't steal anything. What he did was make a way for the wonderful music on which he grew up and the wonderful performers who otherwise might not have been heard to be open to a broader audience. He never claimed to be anything more than a singer. He didn't even like being called the King (because the ONLY KING is Jesus)...He didn't create the adulation...but he definitely earned it. I will never forget when he died...as a West Tennessean, it was huge.

Yes, it all started in the black church!!
During that time, racism was very strong, especially in the south, and Elvis was only a kid.
He snuck to the "blacks only" seating section in the movie theater to sit with his best friend, who was black. He went to black churches, not caring about what whites would say about him, and he joined a black choir, just to name a few things. Can you imagine the courage it took for him, as a boy, to do that in those times. Yet, some still want to paint him as racist.

Was indeed Baptist. East Trigg Baptist Church in Memphis...
One other point here. Elvis was born in 1935 right in the middle of the "Great Depression". There were no jobs available no matter what color your skin was! When Elvis was born the Presleys lived in two room shack built by his father, Vernon. They lived in a poor black neighborhood in East Tupelo, MS. Elvis' house didn't have electricity, running water, heat or a bathroom. Elvis was raised in this poor neighborhood for the first 13 years of his life. There were only four white families in this entire area and the Presleys were one of the four. One of Elvis' childhood friends, Sam Bell said that they didn't see black kids or white kids, they just saw "kids"! Point here is that Elvis was a product of Black Culture, he didn't steal anything!
Elvis was the biggest star in the world and could insist on things no one else could. Sinatra too.

No, that Church was in Memphis. First he belonged to a black Baptist Church in Tupelo Mississippi when he was small. Elvis didn’t know he wasn’t black and he never saw a difference. He wasn’t popular in the 50’s for standing up for equal rights but they never stopped him.
Elvis knew about the Ghetto, he grew up in a place just like a Ghetto in his day. Elvis is in 4 different Halls of fame for Rock and Roll, Blues, Gospel and Jazz. He recorded over 200 Gospel songs and they are what I listen to now. The world needed much more of Elvis, I often think if his twin had survived if they would be similar or if Jesse could sing. One of his backup singers was Cissy Houston, Whitney’s Mother.
