I have been a long time viewer of this and a few other homesteading channels. And I too am plant based. I have learned to process chickens. I still cook for others. And don't force my ways on others. I believe in raising birds ethically. And dispatching animals on the farms and giving them a good life. There are more vegetarians who respect these homesteaders. We raise vegetables in a natural and organic manner. Why can't the animals be raised the same way? Keep it up. I have learned many garden tips from you.

Grew up on a farm. Always treated our animals like pets. Loved them, honored them, cared for them.....and when it came for their time on the farm to end Grandma always said "thank you" to each and every one. We were taught early on to respect life. To raise an animal for your own consumption is to raise them with much care. The only "bad day" they ever had was their last day.

I don’t think enough people are aware of what it actually takes to put food on their table. I grew up in a small rural town and while my family didn’t farm, I had aunts and uncles that did. At a young age I understood where our food came from, because I frequently was out at the farm and saw the animals and we always had a big veggie garden at home. I think how you live is admirable. We source all our meats from local farmers. And while we don’t kill and butcher our own meat, we know they were treated well and fed well. At least I’m cutting down my carbon footprint by growing my own veggies and sourcing meat locally. It also supports the local economy.

“It ultimately cheapens what I do share, because people know what’s real.” This, so much! I think a lot of us went through that particular and unique cloud of fear during that same time (regardless of any “platform”, just within our own lives and social circles), and I’m seeing a wave of refreshed people coming out the other side, willing to offer up what’s real and honest again. It’s really encouraging and I’m glad you are speaking to it. What a fragile world we are collectively building, if we all have to see things the same way for it to work! And also part of my growth here in sharing myself more authentically is that I am also flexing my own resiliency muscles with others who challenge me.
As a fellow homesteader I struggle with believing that like minded UA-camrs who have become more successful and suddenly and clearly have way more resources “really do it”. I worry that content creation becomes the main business and the story of the place and the mission gets abstracted as a result. I think maybe in some ways that’s inevitable- you are curating something, you are crafting a story for us all in edited snippets on a platform that ruthlessly mines for our collective attention. But I appreciate that you are intentional, so clearly well meaning, and, of course, honest! Much love and thanks for being brave in your sharing. ❤

We're planning to buy a farm in the next year and have been working really hard at navigating that mindset (by exposing ourselves to cute farm animals both online and in person, and watching videos about butchering to prepare ourselves mentally). I think it's really important to be honest about the process and the fact that if we eat meat, it, of course, comes from death. I get that people want to hide from that and I applaud your decision to confront it directly and honestly. Thank you for your authenticity. I really appreciate it.

@candacelandon4117- As I mentioned to Jess, we do not butcher our grass fed beef. You can pay someone else to process your meat. If you want to learn how that is done, ask to help out. I used to process my meat chickens, but I now buy organic chicken from a neighboring farm. This helps to support them and I stick to gardening these days. ~ Diane

Your opinions & lifestyle hold so much value, even to those who don’t feel or live the same. I relate heavily to pretty much everything you’ve said in this video. And because I grew up in suburbia with a family that always relied on the grocery store or fast food to feed us, my evolving lifestyle of farming & raising ALL the things that we eat is very contradictory to anyone in my family. So, hearing you speak on things so relatable to me makes me feel like I’m not alone in this farming/homesteading life that does at times feels very isolating when no one around you feels the same. Thank you for somehow always knowing what to say when I need to hear it.

I’m a country girl, yogateacher who grew up around hunters. Like you described in this video I’ve found that hunters and yogateachers both eat meat that’s been raised in a good way/ wild/ butchered with respect. I do raise chickens because my hens get to live their best life and sometimes they have little chickens who grow up to roosters. The roosters live their best lives free ranging in my garden until I butcher them for food. It’s hard every time but bad things happen to the hens with too many roosters around. I’m not affiliated with any religion but I always say a prayer for each animal where I Thank them for their life and that their flesh now will give us sustenance.

Some of the words I chose have become buzz words and are no longer genuine. But, I actually mean them in their definitions. Jess displays tolerance, inclusion, and acceptance of all people despite any ugly behavior they may display as she understands that it's not driven by anything that she has done. It's driven by their experiences and informed by their own trauma. I respect her for this because I do not have that super power. I started butchering this year. I don’t have a lot of space so we are raising rabbits. It’s certainly an experience. After a few butchering in a row my husband looked like he wasn’t handling it well and was saying the process was going to make him vegan. But we tried changing dispatch methods and it made all the difference in the world. I much rather go through this difficult process myself than buy tortured animals from the grocery store.

💯 raising animals correctly and with care is the priority on small farms and homesteads. People who live on Big Macs are often so disconnected from their food . What actually led us to raising most of our own food, animals included, was after watching documentaries on the way animals are raised, and killed in our food industry in america. It's tough killing animals after you've devoted so much time to it's care, and welfare, but they are treated well, cared for well, and have one bad day that we make sure is as quick, and as painless as it can be for them.
