- I went to see the Britney Spears musical, "Once Upon A One More Time," last night! I was skeptical at first, but it was really fun! The show isn’t about Britney’s life but fairy tale princesses. It’s in previews now and opens June 22, 2023, at the Marquis Theater. Justin Guarini as Prince Charming was amazing, and the dancing was spectacular.
The music was good, though I wish the vocals were mixed better. The audience was so excited, and the LED wristbands were a nice touch. Despite my anxiety, I had a great time. Have you seen it? Share your thoughts!

So glad someone is reviewing this show. I saw it over the summer and while it was definitely not my favourite show that I’ve seen, I thought the singers were very impressive. The actress who played the step mother has an incredible voice and gave me chills during “Toxic”.
Saw this in DC and Bway…
I was more excited in DC.
There is still so much work to do to get this show Bway ready.
There are some major lulls in the show and transitions (when they do exist) are rough.
I want this to be successful but it’s just left me wanting so much more.
I loved it, too. I was crying laughing through most of the first Act.
I agree that the new practice of screaming whenever a singer hits a high note (or sometimes just gives a jiggle onstage) is incredibly annoying. I caught the tour of SIX a few months ago, and it was the same problem, fortunately not with every song. Pre-COVID in the West End I caught a performance of DR. FAUSTUS with Kit Harrington. I had no idea who he was (I've never seen Game of Thrones), and the hundreds of teenage girls in the audience kept squealing and taking photos. Sigh. I'm in the West End in another couple of weeks to catch the newish production of OKLAHOMA!
I think with shows like SIX they invite the cheers as it helps the queens get that energy. They do ask us to cheer at multiple moments and interact with them. However I do agree that moments the cheering went on for too long and was hard to hear some of the vocal moments but the queens on stage were loving the energy they were given!
YEEEEESSSS!!! OMFG!!! 🤬 I live with my grandma who watches those shows and she gives me weird looks cuz i'm always yelling at the on screen audience to shut the hell up!! I'm a teacher and teach my students how to be a respectful audience which includes waiting till the end of a song or scene to clap or cheer. I also remember learning this when I was little. I guess it's just a new generation of theater goers we have to put up with 😒
It's worth noting this is a Britney Spears jukebox musical, so inevitably, patrons are going to sing along to EVERY song in the show. This will distract the performers and other theatregoers who have paid hundreds, if not thousands to come to NYC specifically for what promises to be a smash hit. I say what I say, because I fear that what happened at "The Bodyguard" in Manchester, which has songs written and recorded by Whitney Houston will be repeated here. As much as I love seeing people have fun, especially at live theatre performances, I do NOT want that to happen here. Fingers crossed and thumbs pressed, folx will remember to do the sensible thing and behave.
During the first previews we were very loud cheering after great comedic lines or vocal moments. For this type of show it does work and I think the actors appreciated it for the first preview. however I do see as the show continues how that can be annoying but they really blast that music loud so even over the cheers we could still clearly hear the lines and vocals! Jukebox musicals definitely advertise for a different audience, its more of a party show than say Hamilton or defiantly Parade lol.

@@dukeofrodtown1705 entrance applause on the first preview was a little awkward because no one really knew when people were coming in but when they did for sure people were cheering for folks!
Thanks. I just got back and need to start filling my list for next trip and this is definitely on it. Highlight of my trip was probably Shucked, just because I knew nothing about it, wasn't expecting much and had so much fun. It has a lot of low brow humor that somehow works and Alex Newell is just phenomenal.
Saw Sweeney and saw you deleted your video on Josh Groban singing the lead (naughty boy) but I'm assuming we agree on the choice of lead. Great production, though.
You have lots of stuff to see. Really looking forward to your reviews and reactions. Get your butt back to Broadway! I saw 8 shows in 7 days and there were no mass casualties at any of the shows, so that was good.
Was debating between this and Parade last week and decided on Parade at Jacob’s theatre - Ben Platt was amazing - but now I wanna check this out! -Thank you!

You should check out Shucked, Life of Pi and &Juliet. Life Of Pi is a Play but they turn the entire stage into the ocean. Shucked is a funny show with quick jokes and good music. & Juliet is fun and like Once upon a one more time it has a lot of music from Britney Spears as well as other Pop artist from late 90's early 00's.
Yes I enjoyed it too but I do agree that there were tons of missed opportunities

I have a friend seeing this in October, and I'm so glad to hear a good review of it! I saw Parade, Kimberly Akimbo, and &Juliet in March. Loved them all. &Juliet is very much like OUaOMT, and an absolute delight. Kimberly's music was not its strongest suit, but was an *amazing* show nonetheless. And Parade, was, well, Ben Platt. and JRB. I appreciate what the show did, but it was definitely (intentionally) uncomfortable.

Yes to it all. Audiences don't know how to be audiences. Anxiety for shooting and Covid. Ugh. Glad you were able to enjoy it, though.
