  • Lyme disease - symptoms, treatment, and prevention. Board-Certified Emergency Medicine Physician, Dr. Jordan Wagner, explains the leading causes, symptoms, treatments, and preventative of this tick-borne illness.
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection you get from the bite of an infected tick. Untreated Lyme disease can produce a wide range of symptoms, depending on the stage of infection. These include fever, rash, facial paralysis, and arthritis. At first, Lyme disease usually causes symptoms such as rash, fever, headache, and fatigue. Approximately 427,000 new cases of chronic Lyme disease are diagnosed every year in the United States. Scientists believe that 2 million people suffer from post-treatment of tick-borne illnesses. So what causes Lyme disease? Who is at risk for Lyme disease? Can you die from Lyme disease? What are the symptoms of Lyme disease? How do I properly remove a deer tick from my skin? How is Lyme disease diagnosed? What are the treatments and medicines for Lyme disease? Are doxycycline and other antibiotics effective in treating Lyme disease? Don’t worry, in today’s episode of Myths About Medicine, I discuss all the leading causes, symptoms, treatments, and preventative of Lyme disease. Also, if you have any other medical questions that you want answers to, please leave me a message in the comments below! Thanks so much for watching!

I contracted Lyme in 2015 and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I couldn't walk, couldn't even lift my arm and I couldn't sleep because of the severe pain 24 hours a day. Lyme is horrendous. After a few weeks in hospital the doctor's told me that they couldn't do anything to help me and that my body would have to heal itself. After 3 months in in hell I was on the verge of taking my own life just to end the pain. What saved me was reading a book by Professor Buhner's called 'Healing Lyme' and followed his protocol to the letter. When I told the doctor's what I was going to do that they laughed at me. But what else was I supposed to do?
It was a very slow process because first you have to reboot your immune system and second you have to fight the bacteria of which actually hides from your immune system - known as 'pathogenic bacteria'. What is different about the Lyme bacteria to other bacteria is that it eats the magnesium in your body whereas most bacteria eat iron. Without magnesium your muscles can't work. Little by little I began to improve but I won't lie, it was the fight of my life. All in all it took about one year for all the symptoms and the pain to stop. Only then could I begin to build up my strength again. Today, 2024, I play golf and I am a 8 handicap. If I ever contracted Lyme againI don't think I could go through it again and would probably just end my life. That's how vicious it is.
For anyone reading this who has Lyme - don't give up - your body can kill it. It takes a special diet, special herbs and sheer will power. It will be the fight of your life but if you want your life back that is what you must do.

I went to ER on Thursday they never looked at my red blotches. Just treated me for dehydration and took chest X-ray to make sure no pneumonia. 2 days later went to urgent care and they diagnosed me with Lyme. Two days earlier would have helped! 7 people talked to me during my stay for 4 hours.. no one cared.

Hi there, I'm so sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. This June will mark 4 years for me. From what you are describing it sounds like a Herximer reaction. Totally common after antibiotics. The things I wish I didn't know now.. In "a club" nobody ever wants to belong to. It's never cool to be the smartest person in the room - when you are at you doctors office!🥴💚 For me particularly, I still suffer pretty gnarly head & neck aches, it's constant actually. It's weird how your brain 'levels up' and you almost, dare I say, get used to living in an inordinate level of pain. Also, I hope a nurse or someone told you that you must never donate blood or after death, you cannot be an organ donor.

Im a taxidermist and was bit multiple times throughout my life not knowing tick bites were a big deal. A few yrs back i was bit while working and within a few days went way down hill. I had a fever and dropped weight until I was in the double digits (20+lbs) I was covered in a rash from chest to torso. I went to the ER and she refused to test me for tick disease and said it was mono. I had to beg for 6 hrs before they tested and that's when it was discovered I had rocky mountain spotted fever. They said they had no idea what to do and sent me home crying. I went back to a different ER who also had no idea. My neurologist also said sorry and sent me to a Infectious disease dr who called game and fisheries who told her there was no such thing as rmsf in rural va so she said I must have something else. Its been a few years and its gotten so much worse I can't stand it. I haven't been tested since they discovered rmsf but I had the bullseye and can't eat meat. Its a struggle day to day. My bones, muscles nerves.... everything hurts. It is nice to when folks understand though. Thank you. So much.

You may have 3 or more different infections. Rocky Mountain spotted fever can actually kill you. Lyme disease can cause a host of problems. The meat allergy is caused by the bite from a lone star tick, which injects saliva into you that causes you to become allergic to one of the proteins in red meat. I believe you can still tolerate fish and chicken because they lack the protein. The meat allergy will most likely go away in a few years.

As was doing survey work adjacent to a highway when I was overcome with "Brain Fog".I kew my name, my wife's name and her cell number. I was every appreciative when the ambulance arrived and then transported me to the hospital. During hospital three day stay, I was tested for stokes. My son demanded a Lyme test. BINGO. 1. "brain fog" - can't remember such facts where you live, date of birth, current day of week, current date,

First blood test came out negative, but, I’m being put on an antibiotic, because I now have, arthritis in the ankle joint, wrists, extreme fatigue, and headaches.

I live on a short dead end road in the Borough of Swissvale which is a 10 minute drive from the center of the city of Pittsburgh. You don't need to be walking in the woods or a field to get it. Two people on my street have tested positive for Lymes this year alone. I have even tested positive my PCR which you do not mention. You do not mention that even though Amoxocillin can be used, it does not cross the blood brain barrier. The infectious agents of Lymes do cross the blood brain barrier so if you want to limit the potential of neurological complications doxycycline is the preferred choice. It is often given for 28 days. You also do not mention that an individual may not be cured even with antibiotic treatment as the bacteria can remain in you for the rest of your life. It grows slowly so additional symptoms may take time to appear. Not the mention the long term damage this spirochete can do to all the organs of your body as the infection disseminates.

Though its great to have info about such things. The reason i have chronic lyme is i believed that no rash no tick disease. Tick bites can and do itch...especially if attached long enough to get a good latch. It was like a misquito bite but itched much longer and swelled more. Anyone that gets a bite should put date on calendar and if symptoms usually will start appearing after that time and if test doesnt show and and still remain or get worse check again. Tick bites with reactions should be pro. Treated asap but tell me where you find a dr who will? I think no one knows enough about these diseases and there co infections that cause different symptoms that might throw off the norm. But anyone who can pinpoint a tick bite with illness should get help. Sadly it depends on who you go to and where you live. Dont waste time if someone wont take you serious. Find someone who will take it serious and good luck!

Because you will still suffer largely and no doctor will test you for Bartonella or Erlichia, Barbesia, Anaplasma, Chlamydia and so on. And Bartonella can also be transmitted by sand flies or cats.

Typically you treat Lyme disease at any stage with antibiotics but when it becomes tertiary Lyme, then you end up treating the symptoms ( not necessarily antibiotics).

so I don’t wanna sound stupid, but I feel pretty stupid. I got bit by a tick like three years ago and I have no idea how long it was in or anything like that. I found it in the shower and pulled it off.
I did go to my doctors, but they said I don’t need to be tested because it’s probably fine but over the past three years, I’ve had a mystery illness that nobody can figure out. I don’t think I’ve ever actually been tested for Lyme disease, but is it something to bring up to my doctor? the symptoms are very similar to lupus, but I do not have lupus. Although my rheumatologist continues to tell me that I’m probably going to develop lupus and rheumatoid arthritis because I have joint inflammation and symptoms that almost mirror lupus. The rash I get is mostly on my face but also will show up on random parts of my body like my calves and arms and even sometimes on my back, stomach and chest.
I just got back from my Rheumatologist, and they basically are stumped as to how to help me. they have put me on a lot of different medication‘s with a lot of very negative side effects but nothing has worked if anything the symptoms have gotten worse over the past three years. I don’t want to overwhelm my doctor, but do you have a video of what the symptoms would be for somebody who did not treat this for many years? I could name all my symptoms, but it would take a very long time because I have so many of them now that I can’t even keep up with how much just goes wrong randomly.
Also is there anyway to treat it? If I have it, its been there for over 3 years now.

Sure is sister! I never saw a tick, never had the "classic" bullseye or EM rash. Nothing.. I didn't even know I was sick. I 'just' had a headache and a stiff neck the summer of 2017. It was super hot that summer and I chalked these neck & headaches up to needed to increase my water intake. Finally after 3 months my husband is honestly the first one who asked me if I'd taken my temp. It was 104°!!😵😳 Next stop, coma town! For 6 days. By this time, Lyme and their creepy cohorts had set up shop in my brain. They will choose a spot wherever they wish to set up their creep shop and continue to go to town. I'm a 43 year old woman who some days seems more like an early onset dementia patient. My head feels like it's too big for my neck, like it could fall down into my neck/spine? My skull feels like it's going to crumble into a million pieces at any moment. Went from a vivacious, healthy Burlesque dancer to a heat intolerant statistic.💚 Lyme is found in all of our 50 United States and in over 80 other countries. ~ >30% will actually present with a rash.

This reminded me when I had that issue. I had a bullseye spot on my leg which grew to the size of a Softball. Ended up going to the ER late at night (long story). The RN working on that shift just looked at it and said it wasn't Lyme disease. Next day I told my doctor and he was LIVID. He treated me for it right before stepping into the other room, calling the RN and yelling at the top of his lungs. Just to show how rare this was, his voice had the demeanor of Ben Stein so hearing him yell like tat took me back. Sorry for the long story though.

And it would take a while for it to stop dropping blood.. ER doctors put her on 3 antibiotivs for seven days. But how long does it take to know if she has Lyme disease. Does she need the blood test. Please note he didn't say "she should be fine.." I believe my husband has chronic Lyme disease. 2 years ago, he was diagnosed with Ehrlichiosis and the doctor said his blood test also showed he had had Lyme disease in the past. For the past 6 weeks he has been suffering with extreme weakness, feels like he has swollen glands and occasionally, has had a fever. Now the past 7 days he has had a continuous fever and cannot get out of bed. I took him to the ER where he had numerous blood tests, MRI, and chest Xray. They said they found nothing. How would we know if they took a Western Blot test and/or Elisa test? They gave us 2 pages of codes listing the different blood tests. How can we confirm he is suffering from chronic Lyme disease to get the help he needs?

Aww! I am so sorry to hear this. I believe you are right. Because of our testing, it's damn near impossible to get a correct diagnosis. Igenex is place in Texas where your husband can send his blood in and have a complete workup done, and It's only $150! Lyme is such a blanket statement, much like cancer. Well, you want to know where and what kind so you know how to treat correctly, right? The things I wish I didn't know now.. And a club no one ever wants belongs to. It breaks my heart to hear you describe him in this condition. Unfortunately, as his wife, I think you are right. 💚☹

    • @miss.conduct8083
      @miss.conduct8083 3 роки тому +1

To answer your last bit; how can you confirm it? Either having the ELISA & the Western Blot test come back as positive. Igenex in TX? I am so fortunate both actually came back positive. On that note, I'm not sure who or where I could get healed. Sure, there are plenty LLMD's (Lyme Literate M.D.'s) who will gladly treat him🤑🤑 P.S. They don't accept insurance (and it will be a solid grand or more, "due now" to hold his spot.) Treating and being healed from this are 2 very different stories... and healed? I'm don't believe I will ever be completely healed from this. The multiple co-infections are just disgusting. From my own knowledge I've been forced to learn myself, I can legit say I know I'm playing host to Bartonella, Babesia and several other parasitic bastards. Yes, you read that correctly; multiple. And it's not because I'm special.

If there's 4 strands of the bacteria that cause the lyme disease, could that be why some people recover and some dont...the different strands react different to treatment so your not actually getting it all out before you stop treatmnet. Vs another strand that is very treatable.. kind of like how some infections in hospitals are resistant to antibiotics?

    @elithepitbulldog2209 2 місяці тому

Tick bites do in fact itch. Way worse than a mosquito bite. But if the rash spreads slowly outwards, they part may not itch. The itch is at the immediate bite location. Oh yes, and one of the worst symptoms is with the digestive system . 70% of patients that get Lymes will have potentially debilitating gut issues, and that can include the bladder, where the bacteria likes to hide

Antibiotics don't work in chronic lyme.
Not all people are fortunate enough to find the rash.
I was not. 15 years later I was treated. The damage done is a lifelong problem.

    • @DoctorER

Sorry you are dealing with the consequences of Lyme diseases. Hope you are getting the best care.
      Just fyi:
CDC “In general, infected ticks must be attached for more than 24 hours to transmit infection; prompt tick removal can prevent transmission.”
Most of the time it is hard to know how long a tick has been there so you treat it as if it could have transmitted the bacteria, especially if you live or were in an endemic area.
Also a single dose of antibiotics can be used if tick identified early.
And yes the rash doesn’t happen all the time.
Lots of skin checking if you live in these endemic areas.

Get a tick spoon and have it on hand. Mine are in set of 3-one at home, one in the car and you can add to keychain etc. it is a little bowl-shaped spoon with a slit in the side. You pull any hair (ie on a dog, etc) aside and slide the spoon slot around the tick and gently until it’s all the way in the crack of the spoon. The tick will back out on its on - just be patient. This is what you want, so you are not alarming the tick and making it thrust its mouth contents and thus the disease into your wound. Using the hot end of a match to hold against it does make it retract, but it will spew the disease and other liquid into your wound and that’s the last thing you want.
The tick spoons are a great little gadget if you’re ever in the woods or have lots of trees and leaves in your yard or where you go. Leaf litter is where they love to breed and live in the winter.
