- Francis Ford Coppola's new epic Megalopolis has screened to critics at the Cannes Film Festival, and the reactions have varied, some people thinking the movie is terrible, with others seemingly thinking it is a masterpiece.
Let's take a look at the reviews of this movie, made by the director of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.
#megalopolis #francisfordcoppola #cineranter
Even the most negative reviews make me SOOOO hyped for this.
It’s your money.
It's a Coppola movie. It interests me more than some other movies, even if the other movies are crowd pleasers or box office succeses. A man who has contributed to Hollywood artistry with a personal vision and financing most of it himself taking a big risk, I'm in 🤷🏻♂️
"he would sit in his trailer for hours on end, wouldn't talk to anybody, and was often smoking marijuana" - my man.
he’s just like me fr fr
I respect his process
are you insulting me or describing me?
That sounds like Wesley Snipes shooting Blade 3.
"I did all the things other people just regret that they didn't try."
Holy shit that's baller
in the 70s upcoming directors had the balls to make movies in their vision without much studio interference..Coppola should be a example for other directors in the current rotten hollywood system
I think that depends on how many idiots pay to see this pos.
Even if I end up hating the movie, I know I'm gonna have a much more fun time with this than I would seeing any of the committee-designed studio schlock that film executives were berating Coppola for not wanting to emulate.
Well said, people need to be free and unafraid to express even bad artistic ideas, but hopefully it will be good.
Kingdom of the planet of the apes is much better than this. Coppola is no longer able to make movies.
Good point about Dracula. It wasn't loved when it came out, but it's gotten better over time.
I remember being a bit confused by Dracula. Keanu and Winona?! But yes, over time, and multiple viewings, I have come to frickin' love it. I'm a big Rome nerd and I've been reading about his plans for Megalopolis for ages, so I am beyond stoked to see this movie.
I loved it since day one, then again i was 8 years old and loved horror and boobs
Peak Sadie Frost.
all i need the hear is the word "unique" and im sold to watch this movie
I fucking NEED to see this movie!!!
Lol no. No you don't.
@@nathansands71 Yes I do. Wether good or terrible I will be entertained as fuck.
You have to fornicate to watch the movie? What are you talking about about? Just go see it and leave your pants on.
@@AnneHathawayRulesIf you get entertained, it means the movie is good. I'll see it, too, as soon as it is released. Coppopola is the man. Period!
@@mirazusta2002 I owe him the $10 admission for Apocalypse Now
Love it or hate it, this is what filmmaking and art is about, putting some wholly unique and crazy object out into the world to provoke a response, and even on your own dime, big respect, art needs way more Copala, cause most Hollywoodians these days are straight up soft
According to the professional critics at the time, in their initial reviews of Blade Runner and The Thing, both films were considered failures. With little exaggeration those movies were considered to be terrible. Is that true of how these films are considered today? No. The pro critics at the time were wrong!
The Hollywood press ridiculed Coppola during the production of Apocalypse Now. The film was an indulgent waste of money insiders said at the time. What is the view today? Apocalypse Now is considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made. The insiders were wrong!!!
The original Blade Runner had the same type reviews and later on in years became a beloved classic masterpiece. The same can be said about Megalopolis. Broaden your mind and widen your scope of perception.
The first theatrical cut of Blade Runner was VERY different from the movie we know now. It had a terrible voice over and tons of scenes were cut, but eventually it was tweaked into a masterpiece
Shut up and take my money. The responses and the teaser have me excited. I dont need to know anymore.
I am going to see this movie no matter what
I'll definitely see it. Time will still tell...
Its like Neil Breen, only with money and talent!
;=8)
COnsidering the junk we have been getting, we should be greatful for something that might be different.
I think a lot of people will want to see it simply for the pleasure for watching the movie fall apart while simultaneously re-inventing movies. That's quite a stunt.
I have a deep admiration for Coppola and I will be watching this
I dont care about these critics!
It had the same as Damien Chazelle's Babylon it got mixed reviews mostly negatives, but I enjoy it!
It's all a "Circus Maximus", and besides, joy is found in repetition.
Definitely fascinated to see a film, Coppola defines as his ultimate vision. Unmissable.
The casting is nutz! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I can't wait to see Shia LaBeoufs character , he knows how to be box office
The last thing you expect from a Coppola movie is an orderly production. Does no one remember the "Heart of Darkness" docu about 'Apocalypse Now'? Looking forward to this.
I read that Coppola sold his winery in Sonoma Calif to finance this film
Take it easy, Coppola’s not making a western here!
Junior Soprano ? :))
Apocalypse Now is a film i really have to be in the mood for and is tough to sit through no matter how many viewings, i hope this movie fits the bill though
Excited to see this in IMax
First minute is unnamed sources complaining about a guy. Strong opening😊
For every “Godfather II,” there’s a “Jack.”
Mr. Coppola does not usually fail to impress
The only movies I see are those you can rent on UA-cam. If this gets there, I will rent it. Given Coppola's age and the possibility he has lost touch and that the actors are the same group he used decades ago (not a positive), this movie could very well be bad. But it also just might be ahead of it's time. For that I would check it out, but I would not go out of my way to see it, for example I would not go to a movie theatre. That is in part because I feel like the chances are far greater the movie is a disaster.
‘The Materialization of the Psychotic’s Dream Deciphered By A Clear Voice…Hangers!…It’s Hangers, Pats!’😂😂😂
Still, can’t wait to see it👍
What an honour to sit on Mr. Coppola's lap. I would pay for that ...
I very much intend to see this movie. After the conveyor belt of trash that Hollywood has churned out. Maybe not a conveyor belt, it's more like a treadmill that just recycles the same old trash. I wanna finally see something that's new and challenging. If it's garbage then fine I can live with giving up a few hours of my life in hopes of something new and exciting.
exactly my thoughts too
It's funny. Hollywood was dead in the toilet back in the late 60s when the American New Wave artists like Coppola, Scorsese and Cassevetes (inspired by the Euro New Wave) came to its rescue. Well Hollywood is dead in the trash again.....
Critics are often times so far up their asses that they can’t see art when it’s presented to them
If this man sat with a video camera capturing hanging clothes in a closet for two hours, I would pay to see it.
Well it can't be any worse than the dross the big studios have handed out for the past 20 years
Very well done video!
How many of these critics also disdained Coppola's Dracula on release, a movie which is now recognized as a classic?
Super great video
Been wondering for years if this was ever going to come out.
Can't wait
His best movie, "The Black Stallion," hardly ever gets mentioned.
Letting a Shia LaBeouf get anywhere near his movie set tells me he may be suffering from dementia. If it's good, it will be less good because LaBeouf will have desecrated it like Travolta desecrated "A Thin Red Line."
If all the reviewers liked it I would be suspicious. The fact that they are divided is promising. So many films that are now recognized as masterpieces were originally trashed by critics. At the opposite extreme, films that receive universal praise end up in my view to be pedestrian or boring.
I'm in.
I have a hunch that I will both dislike the movie, and love it at the same time.
I am still interested in seeing it but directors can certainly lose more than a step in their old age. Or grow arrogant ahen they have had their work praised and ass kissed for years.
Basically as a fan of actual cinema im hoping this is good. But lets be honest how many movies has Coppola directed in the past 20 years?
He peaked in the 1970s and has only made a few good films since then. And that was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away
grandpa over there squendering the inheritance money.....lolz
He earned that money himself!
Youngin' over here squandering his allowance.... lolz. (Coppola EARNED his millions that he freely spent. Just sayin')
talk about the film not the gossip mate
It seems that the definition of 'art' is just so subjective. I say that not all art is meant to be good, and some of the best art is bad.
So the first minutes of this are negative hearsay.
I still want to see it...
Since when do critics have good opinions tho?
I kind of want to respect this more, but there's nothing revolutionary about an established director hiring Hollywood stars to make a film that basically has been made many times before. Coppola is okay, and his films have good competent technical merits, but he's not a deep thinker in any way whatsoever.
Dracula took my breath away
There have been no "official" complaints made public, so we're going to have to leave it at that for now. But that doesn't mean I buy the producer's explanation. And I must say, if anyone has ever given a "creep" vibe lately, it's been FFS. To be fair, when you get to be that age, it's not unusual that inhibitions begin to relax. Sadly, it's yet another Adam Driver BOMB!
Movie making is half your vision & half your viewer's vision. Some of these geniuses don't get it. When they go at it alone this happens.
Clearly Mr. Coppola is attempting a new method of making a film. If the stories are to be believed, he deliberately kept everyone in the dark, IMO. Forcing his cast and crew to exercise their own professional experience and judgement filming the scenes. Risky. Regardless, I'm eager to watch this movie.
When we watch the last " Palme d'or" , " anatomie d'une chûte" I don't see how it is even possible to do worse.A terrible movie without a single directing idea, with no interest whatsoever for the cinematographic art. Coppola's movie has to be better.
The man is a certified genius. I'm sure he'll make his money back . I can't wait to see it. Reviewers, what do they have know.
Here’s the thing for me the man has directed some amazing movies and he’s also directed some seriously seriously bad movies and I’m pretty sure this is gonna be the latter he’s not a good writer. You mentioned the conversation one of the worst movies I’ve ever ever seen.
rehash of leavin the bronx
I'll wait for the steaming release.
These producer & Director are creeps....
Numerical ratings…..ludicrous..
I don’t even want to see this garbage.
They got a man in a dress, that's already a sign of a bad movie.
It looks pretty shit tbh
Coppola's only good works were mired with studio interference. Maybe its not such a bad thing to tell these bloated ego directors to chill out a bit. Did you know Coppola wanted to make a page-for-page adaptation of The Godfather novel? That book is dime store trash. The restraint financially and otherwise is why that film is so tight even though the runtime. Now try to watch Twixt...i dare you. Jack is a masterpiece compared to this Mega fake word w.e. its called.
I wonder why people have such a hard on for this film to flop 🤔
There is 0 chance I'll like this movie
It sounds like a self-indulgent pile of crap to me.
This movie is so doomed
Agreed
Can you guys explain why? I'm seriously out of the loop I don't know how much about filmmaking I don't know really anything about Francis.
@@joshuamurray6580 a few reasons. The trailer looks like a cheap B movie. The cast is full of has-beens and never-will-bes, including Shia Labeuof and Hoffman, and Esposito who is one of the worst “actors” around. The guy is literally the same, dull character in everything he’s been in. Listening to the production stories was like listening to a bad comedy, between the utter confusing of everyone to Coppola’s childish and predatory actions. Finally, the only good reviews it’s getting are from those notoriously wrong sources. The same ones who champion everything, only to have the movies bomb. It just looks like some bad crowning project that completely misses the mark.
@@davedice4688 Thanks for the reply
@davedice4688 What's clear is this film is not for your TikTok adhd generation. I'm sure Disney will put out something more appropriate for you.
I can’t believe I’ve just watched a video of someone reading reviews…
Open your mind and learn something about perspective and points of view. There are umpteenth versions of the past, none of which might be sound but are certainly worth consideration. It just struck me that most of those commenting in this thread are young men.
@@dolinaj1 The simple fact that you had a judgment about a comment I did about myself tells me everything I need to know about the person you think you are and the air of superiority you seems to be attached to. I would humbly suggest you let go of that, it’s a very bad look. Now about the young men comment, I would again humbly suggest you learn about “reading a room”, this a UA-cam channel mostly about gangster movies…and you have no idea who you are talking to. Hope you get better, sincerely.
who tf has 120 million worth of wine?? thats dirty money for sure
It's not the wine; it's the real estate.
Haven’t given anything by Rotten Tomatoes a tint of value since they bent their knees to Disney and Captain Marvel.
Trusting them is akin to using Wikipedia as an academic source.
I often go through the audience reviews to determine if I’m going to like it or not. They paint a pretty accurate picture
But ok, Rise of Skywalker has a suspicious 86% audience score
I'd rather watch the marvels and madame webb
Since the creator is a liberal and one who would vote for JB.....I would suspect that I, like Jon Voight, may possibly gain some insight through this film, as to how and why liberals feel as they do.
Damn fine channel sir. Much respect
To you.

the actors in it suck so it'll suck.
Violently mixed reviews are the surefire sign that an artistic work is worth checking out.
Amen to that
Yep, the same was said about "Apocalypse Now" for sure.
It's become quite clear certain industry entities want to sabotage this film.
He’s always directed from a trailer. Read for whom god wished to destroy about the making of apocalypse now. It’s brilliant.
False. That's what happened for barbie too.
Fuck the critics I am going to see this movie!
That's the spirit. Don't let anyone tell you to watch or not watch something.
Agree I loved Van Helsing even though the critic's hated it
@@joshuamurray6580 Van Helsing was campy fun the kind of movie you see on a Friday night.
Good luck
Watch his movie "jack" first to get you in the mood.pretty sure it's the last movie he made about 26 yrs ago.
This starts off as a video to personally attack Coppola rather than Review the movie. He's obviously a strong supporter of cancel culture. Almost appears like it's a vendetta inspired video. I think I'll stick with what Mike Friggs said instead of "some person from the set said..."
My god you lot are so fkn fragile 🙄
I can truly respect that Coppola quote at the end; very few have the bravery to live life that way, but will be the only few to die with no regrets.
I don't know if I've ever been this intrigued.
Why do people hate fun.
Because they're jealous
I am eager to see this film, so that I can judge for myself!
Low score on RT maybe a good thing... doesn't sound overly woke or pandering to "modern audiences".
I agree. Not in the mood for eye-rolling wokeness.
Besides the fact that this COPPOLA: in this day and age, ANY movie that took artistic risks is automatically worth watching in my opinion. Whether I enjoy the film, or not, it should at least be an interesting, thoughtful and inspired piece of work.
Bravo, yes
There are some who say that Coppola is an extremely inconsistent genius and that for every great film like _Godfather II_ there is a deeply flawed or meaningless work like _Jack._ But I would counter that with the statement that some films are neither a _Godfather II_ nor a _Jack_ but something totally unique and different, something odd sitting in a totally different neighborhood and that cannot be quantified or compared to normal films, one that is strangely fascinating artistically but still considered a failure by critics and the mainstream at large --- one such film is _Rumble Fish._ That is why those who love Francis will always give him the benefit of the doubt --- he films what he _feels_ and not what anyone else wants to see --- and for those whose tuning forks resonate to that same frequency, an aesthetically rapturous pleasure is what awaits them. I can't help but feel that _Megalopolis_ will fall into that category. Flawed but magical and deeply heartfelt and personal Coppola. A true artist works for himself, not his audience. We who love his work are simply a case of fortunate synchronicity.
my exact thoughts but put so much more eloquent
@droppeddogs Not too bad, only takes a minute or two to read. On the other hand, the religious books of the world have infinitely more words and probably spout a lot more nonsense. Everything is relative.
@droppeddogs Hey, thanks. Glad you noticed.
In some of the questionable behavior Franciws is acused of, I have alwys heard that he is a real genetleman, from people who are not famous and have met him.
Everybody and their uncle gets accused of something these days. It's tiresome.
Some old men appreciate young flesh, but are impotent and can only grope - never okay regardless of which old man does it.
Finally someone takes the "America is literally the Roman Empire" trope to the screen. This needed to be done, no matter its flaws (supposed flaws)
Especially if you know nothing about ancient Rome I can see how it'd be appealing
Rome was truly incredible, many countries tried and try to be Rome, and end up similar in some aspect, proof that Rome is the most influential and incredible civilization of all time.
It’s Francis Coppola it definitely will have major flaws
America isn't literally Rome. It's an empire though, and is beginning to have its hegemony challenged as many of the nations that are exploited in order to maintain the empire, including the republic that birthed it, are beginning to be fed up with living in misery and destitution in order to fund both the constant maintenance of empire and military expansion, as well the elite class of the hyper-wealthy*
America is absolutely not the roman empire. If you finished high school you'd know that.
Sounds a lot like the production of Apocalypse Now.
A great take on a great artist, I must see it.
No other film maker has given me the personal courage to approach the art form like Coppola... "Do not ask the world's permission to make a great art work... They will say no."
10 points on your initial review.
“Personal courage?!” What constitutes your œuvre to date?
I intend to see the movie if I can. I think he has something important to say, thought I'm not sure I'll understand what it is.
I doubt that it's about a specific message. True art isn't like that.
A profoundly humble comment, ES. Bravo!
If only this film didn't have the name Coppola attached, we might be able to judge it on its own merits.
How much hard is!
Can't wait to see what he did with Grace Vanderwaal.😊
The critics reviews now forces me to watch it
All the reviews make it sound good, but the reviewers think they're making it sound bad.
Sounds like Apocalypse Now part deux... inspired by Martin Sheen.
