  • The Race 2 Mars is on! Kanajashi may have won round 1, but I think he's going to have some fun trying to beat this time :D
This is a challenge to see how fast you can get from a vanilla star system start on Earth-like to Mars
Time starts when you hit spawn on the respawn screen
Time ends when your powered respawn point is locked to the surface of Mars
    Rules:
Vanilla game settings: Progression is on, Scripts are off, PCU limit is on, basically don't touch the default settings
Mods that do not change gameplay but enhance the audience experience or accessibility are allowed (current allowed mods are Sneaky Sounds, Screen Gunk Be Gone and the one for changing the emissives to colours that are better for people with some forms of colour blindness)
no manually entered GPS locations allowed
    blind jump to Mars only
clang drives, weird glitches etc are allowed and are probably slower if you can't use scripts 😛
I am not the arbiter of speedruns. I just did this for some fun and mostly to learn the start of the game well enough to confidently teach it again.

By far my fastest start (given several speedruns) has used this technique:
Set up your base ON the ice, landing on an iron/cobalt/nickel deposit. Get your initial stone either from the shore (if you're close) or (more likely) from the stone layer UNDER the ore layer. Grab one suitload each of nickel, cobalt, and silicon fairly early.
    Build order:
Medium cargo on the pod so you can load it with stone. This is critical to a fast start. Once fully loaded with stone queue up components as below, and grab your nickel, silicon and cobalt lumps. You can just drop them as big rocks next to the pod until you have storage.
Refinery, turbine, basic assembler, 2 turbines, large grid small cargo (load those ores now), welder (all placed linearly), conveyor junction or second cargo (on top of first cargo), queue up 5-6 turbines in the survival pod, meanwhile assembler (attached to the junction so the welder can build it), second basic refinery, o2 h2 gen x2, hydrogen engine, 2 speed modules on assembler, grind down basic assembler, large refinery, large cargo, hydrogen tank (if placed correctly most of these can be built by the original welder).
Up to this point, all materials are hand mined (ideally iron is right below your base so travel time by suit is about 3 seconds).
From here ramp up o2h2 gens as fast as possible, since hydrogen accumulation is one of the bottlenecks (if going for a grand tour speed run), keep adding speed modules (since power is not a bottleneck when using hydrogen engines). Accumulate iron and stone with either a piston miner, or a flying miner, once you have plenty of iron/stone being processed, head for gold.
This gets me a large grid ship filled with hydrogen, charged batteries, and charged jump drive, somewher between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on how smoothly I can do it.

I love the idea of a survival series where you have to communicate using in-game comms, it would present some really interesting challenges to overcome. And if you have some sort of shared goal but no way to easily share what you're working on without the comms

You should do one where you have to race to your first resource depot, build a ship, go to next planet...repeat..race!
It keeps out the totally random crapshoot on what resources are available when you land, that can toss the race out of wack from the gate.

As an advice from my experience, maybe that will work for you as well. Mark your Home base with a gps and a very colourful Text, any unique colour. If you go mining it just takes one peripheral look to know where to turn to, when you head back. What I usually do when being on a 3 mineral spot with my home base, i dug down to the shallow minerals vertically and the dig up a 45° tunnel as an exit, headin towards the colouful home icon. So next time you can just fly in without stopping and fly out without the need to change direction.. with a little practice this is really safe and quick.
best greets ! love the *race to..* idea ! Edit : I build a small container pretty soon, even before i build the assembler and I use that as a square hookup point to spead my later conveyors.. Sorry second ecit, I just heard your opinion on containers, so I just keep my comment for the fun of it ! :)

Put a single drill on the drop pod as fast as possible. Five seconds of ship drilling gets you as much stone as a few minutes of hand drilling and unloading. Add drills engines and storage in small steps, between trips to get resources.
Use welders to cover the times when construction is throttled by parts coming from the assembler, and use that time to mine ore to keep the assembler fed. Try to keep the pipeline full at all times: refining ore, assembling parts, and building structures. Any time one of those stops, you lose time. Put speed modules on either the assembler or the refinery one at a time, depending on the one that's slower at the moment.

    • @Flipsie
      @Flipsie  2 роки тому

Building a drill on the drop ship required a basic assembler, to get that quickest you should have a basic refinery, you can keep the basic refinery working constantly with only a hand drill ergo the ship drill is not required till much later. At least that's my logic behind this, I'd be very curious to see someone work out a better way because then I'm learning something new about the early vanilla game and that would be pretty cool :)

Fist off... When you start your base... Build your refinery and assembler high enough off the ground that you can build your thrusters under them...
As for a fun note... Build a custom turret on the four sides of your ship with large thrusters on them instead of guns. Could possibly get away with only two thrusters for the whole build if they are on opposite aides of the ship... Set the turret control block to control the thrusters in a group and steer by aiming the opposite direction you want to go. Hehe it was just a thought

Just a couple of things that I think would speed things up.
T2 tools as soon as you get the basic assembler and T3 as soon as the advanced assembler is up and running and silver is available.
The effects of better tools compound so the sooner you get them the bigger the gain.
As soon as possible (before starting the miner mods) put a connector on the base.
The connector gives you storage and it allows you to connect the miner (while still converting it) so you recharge the batteries.
Put speed modules on everything as soon as possible.
Again speed modules compound so the sooner you get them the greater the benefit.

Regarding the comms thing, the Minecraft community managed to create a similar experience using a Mumble plugin - namely that of proximity-based voice chat, so as long as the Space Engineers modding API allows you to detect that, it shouldn't be an issue. I expect Mumble is going to be easier to mess around with since it's open source.

While I understand that you don't really want to get into the weeds with learning the entire map (and frankly I don't think it's really feasible - the earth-like planet has a surface area 2/3 the size of Tasmania with ore patches spaced something like 2km apart on average). However, while trying to find information that might help me to try and speedrun the game, I did discover that with the current ore-spawning system, Cobalt will _always_ spawn in Iron patches (and you have a 50% chance of finding gold there, too). There are some other patches that can have Cobalt, but they are rare. If you can't find the Cobalt, go to the opposite side of the ore patch to where you found Iron and just dig down a whole lot. It can be close to 100m down so you won't find it unless you either have a large grid detector or you know where to dig.
Hopefully that will save you some resets.

I still wonder about the flow of ores through limited conveyor port connections like are your left and right drills outputting their full potential through the center drill through the 1 small conveyor port through the cockpit? I feel like putting a cargo container between each drill to widen your drilling capacity and increase ore flow. Unless bottlenecking isn’t a thing… i feel like the drill just auto transfers out its total capacity to any available cargo hold.. i wonder if the cockpit fills up before the cargo containers did would that then dam up the flow? These are all things I never found any conclusive evidence to support either side.

It was pretty exhausting to do and in the end the time I got was about as good as I think I can get (without abusing physics glitches). The only thing that might allow it to be sped up is the presence of flat atmospheric thrusters, since you can build large ones of those relatively easily, giving you better power efficiency for the mining ship

Fun ride as always, Splitsie - I'm always so glad you let us tag along.
Not sure - but you might gain a few minutes building the jump drive before some of the other ship parts (like thrusters) as it can charge while you then build them - depends on whether you're waiting for gold/cobalt or not.
Tried to find the ship on the workshop but I couldn't find it among the absolutely HUGE amount of Static Grids posted there - any chance of a link? I honestly didn't expect there to be many Static Grids/Large Grids/Small Grids on the workshop, but there was over 700 pages of them!

I disagree. Look at any other speedrun community and you will see restarts are a fact of life. i think getting the refinery online from a small to large grid conversion would be a bit faster because that saves you a bunch of resources for the first turbines that must be made using the survivalkit.
also i believe while not at full speed refineries work when they have insufficient power. they make a lot of unhappy noises but still they should be faster and more efficient than the survivalkit even while running on a single turbine being able to throw in ores earlier will shave off a couple of minutes and because the refinery has a bigger inventory you can also throw in more stone at once and use the time inbetween for scouting ores

This picture in picture thing in the beginning was doing my head in. My brain keeps wanting to expand the video to full screen.
Given the number of restarts, it almost feels like you're just better off taking the time to find a world and just basing runs of that or have someone create a speed run specific mod that helps to randomly generate what you need closer to your starting point a la guaranteed ice lake in visibility range, the relevant ores in that lake etc.
I get that these runs aren't meant to be super serious but it really feel like it bogs down the momentum of the runs when over 22 mins in and you're still looking for a starting planet.

    • @Flipsie
      @Flipsie  2 роки тому +2

That all sounds like a lot of work for me when I can just respawn and let others do the same. As the speedrun isn't the true end goal for me it was never in my plans. Plus as mentioned during the stream I want the random, I want the variability because having all of us start from the same place makes things less interesting in my opinion

A single large grid hydrogen engine weighs less than 1 large grid battery, has an output of 5000 KWH, compared to 1 wind turbine at around 460 ish? And that isn’t factoring in fog. The engine takes nearly an hour to charge a jump drive to full just by itself. A large battery only holds 3 MWH total but the battery can put out its charge a lot faster at 12MHW.. i feel like all you need is one base battery so no 20% loss all the time from the constant automatic battery balancing, 1 wind turbine and 1 hydrogen engine, and just get a load of ice here and there. I don’t think you need a full jump drive charge so the combined 17MWH output of battery and engine would be enough to charge it to full enough if you lift off as soon as the jump drive is done by the time you reach space. So it might be worth looking into even if you don’t go drill rig for the ice.
ORRR put 1 battery on your base to leave behind. One battery on your ship set to recharge till you need to charge the jump drive that way you don’t lose 20% and then of course the engine.
Clearly I think 3 batteries is overkill haha especially if you plan to go full *hydrogen thrust* haha i have a whole idea for that as well but ill hold off on that till next run maybe haha
I have yet to make a successful speedrun myself but will keep you posted as soon as I have time to try it.
I’m more of an analyst than an engineer I suppose.

It's faster to get to the deposits but your drill's detection range is shorter so it's mixed as to whether it'll save you time since you may miss things that are there or spend more time flying over the deposit to determine what's there - I'm in two minds over it and can't decide which is better

You spend too much time mining resources by hand, and you don't take advantage of the survival kit being a secondary refinery once you get the basic refinery.
A stationary stone miner is pretty vital, and you preferentially want a refiner of some kind attached to your miner because stone compresses to refined materials better than hauling stone. Concentrated ores of the other types are nice, but as you learned with your silicon shortages, you need the distribution of resources most immediately.
You spend a lot of time in the back and forth of hand mining.
Also, cobalt and nickel are really really slow to process; they block the refiners from processing other things like stone and iron; early game you have few slots for refining whereas mid to late game you have vast refining complexes and you don't need to worry about competing processing needs because you can have a refiner for each material. I'd have to break out a spread sheet to quantify it, but stone processing is faster for getting silicon, nickel, and iron even if you get better yield for those individually from the dedicated ores.
Mid to late game, stone is garbage to be thrown out. Before you get your first proper refiner though, stone is the primary resource.
Also, understanding the value of stone at the beginning of the game smooths out a bunch of the start issues you've been experiencing. Find gold and cobalt definite start. Find cobalt probable start. No gold and no cobalt no start. Everything else can be filled in by stone.

    • @KAClown
      @KAClown 2 роки тому

To be explicit. A large drill is a huge investment of materials. Somewhere near to you getting the first basic refiner up, you should strap a small drill on your miner--not because it will fly and get all the other things but because it can mine around it without moving. The fact that you quickly get it flyable means you can use the miner to mine surface stone then hop when it exhausts or threatens to tip the miner.
For this reason, I prefer mountain starts with surface stone and ice; I know you prefer lakes and savanna, but I encourage you to try out mountain starts with snow plains. You'll want to rely on large grid detectors more than just visual acuity and luck for that.
