Would like to see 4 teams of 4 doing this. With sabotage and impeding the progress of other teams allowed. Would be an exciting competition. If too much time passes you could give each team something to speed it up.
Maybe if you increase the player cap you can get a couple spectators to film everything from a third-person perspective and make a show out of it. Preferably 4, 1 for each team.

I finally get to see the other perspective! This was a fun challenge. I hope that this concept catches on.
Hmm, possible variation to this speed run. Start time with selecting drop pod to the earth like, end time with said drop pod landing on Mars intact. The added challenge of keeping the pod intact and moving it as a second vessel instead of canabilizing it for the faster start. Add in the requirement that you have to be in the pod and can only have the same stuff that would be in the starting inventory when landing and you can call it the "Oops, I meant to start here instead" speed run.

Good fun as always; would have been closer if you'd both had good starts rather than Kanajashi's flipped pod and you playing hide-and-seek with ore deposits.
Perhaps next time one of you can spawn into a pod, quickly save the game. Then you can both load that game and have the same start point? With the same drop any oddities - like flipped pods/hiding ores, will at least be suffered by both of you.
Suggestion for a team race - survival pod (both together, so just one pod in the team, the other members spawn at the Leader's pod.) To space, and then on to destroy a Shield Vengeance Drone - The Pod to Wreckage Race. Might be more of a mini-series, though.
I'm still slightly happy with how much I managed to bring it back after my disaster with ore deposits 🙂

Splitsie, This was so good, would love to see a challenge like this with you, Kanajashi, Capac, DE, Nab, Wasted, Shack and any others I have missed. All chatting, and release all the vids at once so we can play them all at once and change between them to catch all disasters and successes. It was great to do it on this one to see the different ideas and problem fixes. Nice work!!
I think most of the future ones will be solo, I'm hoping to have another crack at this on Thursday and see if I can manage to substantially improve my time :P

That was a great idea running 2 single player games so no lag issues.
Solo runs will still be cool, but I did enjoy the chat and sharing hints between you two.

Shame about the jump drive, but Kanajashi's time was still impressive.
Going on the shields conversation that happened around 2:30:00. Everyone is looking at super beefy shields like Starwars when, if shields where ment to be implemented they should be more like Halo. Low health shields with quick recharge speed (in comparison to current shield mods) that are good for stopping big alpha strikes but don't offer much more then that and don't stop physics from happening and only start recharging while the grid isn't taking damage. That way, you get to see parts fall off and blow up still fairly quickly, but doesn't let the player on the receciving end of being attacked get gimped completely from an ambush.
Would also add some tactical approach needed with warfare 2, strip shields with a Gatling gun or auto cannons then go for an artillery or railgun shot to your enemy, same principle in halo with plasma and ballistic damage in how it effects shielding in halo
That is how the shields work. Well the mods that I have used, did this. You had two options, you could increase the strength, but the regen would take hours to get back up or you could reduce the strength and have faster regen speeds.
It worked out good. I would have my main base with the highest shields, but my ships would have fast regen. Depending on if the ship was HEAVY or LIGHT armor as that makes it really different. When you play PvP, you need to think about this. You don't put things that go BOOM near the cockpit :P

Only halfway through and finding this a cool challenge, what might take it a step further is TEAM speed running, I'd like to see Splitsie micromanage Capac (or attempt to!)
I've often wondered if w4sted and I traded sidekicks and raced to something, just how much better capac would play simply because then he could beat me 😄

Man when splitsie put that passenger seat back into his mining ship I lost it. You're not saving ANY time by having to remote control the ship while you're in it. In fact, eventually you'll be losing more time by going into the menu to grab the remote control. Even so, fun video and concept!
There were soooo many things I did wrong, that one is tiny compared to the many other things
I had two tries at the race to mars. First attempt, the landing pod failed to lock the landing gear and fell off a cliff and destroyed the survival kit. It was all over in a few minutes. Second attempt took me 5hrs 20min, but I did a silly thing and took the entire base to mars instead of just a flying jump drive.
Hah, nice, I havn't watched Kanajashi's POV yet. Now I can sync them in split screen

Got both streams side by side lol. If i did this right then Splitsies stream is about 26 seconds ahead of Kanajashi's. A whole new perspective watching it like this.

Far from being a bad concept, this would make for many great streams for all SE streamers if you do it as a league based challenge in which everybody has to be go against everybody else at least once.
It would be interesting to see how much progress each player would make by doing it repeatedly.
true but also not.
Reason for it is that as soon as you make it competitive (like a league or a leaderboard based challenge) the viewers have a easy way to compare and sh1t talk other streamers ("streamer XYZ made it in X amount of time with less gametime than you, therefore you suck" etc) wich can bring a lot of stress into a otherwise relaxed and fun stream.
Happens in games(also real life) all the time, as soon as you make things competitive, toxicity happens.
And yes, i know, viewers and players always gonna compare such things(and probably already are) anyways, but makeing this an "official" league based challenge is like throwing oil into a fire to stop the fire.

But i think a league is not the way to go, rather a chill and fun challange to bring up to your fav streamer/creator and hoping noone makes it hardcore competitive. :)
Not everything has to be a stressed out, competitive league and leaderboard game with the streamer constatly arguing with chat because they are insulting/toxic to each other or other streamers.
I saw friends fighting over challenges and even as far as ending collaborations because of competitive crap in a rather "non competitive" game that is suppoused to be fun, and all that because of a challenge taken way to serious.

I watched this video and loved it. Decided to do the challenge. I got very lucky and dropped directly on an ice lake with all needed ores right there. Was doing very well. Was about 3 hours in, just waiting on superconductors and coming back with the last load of gold.
Wasn't paying attention and the miner ran out of power on approach. Smashed into the base at like 40m/s, trashing the miner and base. I just kinda rage quit.
I try again tomorrow. :)

Splitsie, as a work around to the jump drive issue, use the client plugin mod and enable the jump selector plugin. That will make jump drives work and it's far more user friendly than vanilla controls for jump drives.

lol Yeah, you need the slightest bit of filter, I like to think I use mine to vaguely organise my thoughts but to be honest it doesn't really work :D
I will place downward thrusters on atmospheric ships for two reasons: if I expect the ship to fly inverted at some point or if I intend to use the autopilot. I've had bad experiences with the autopilot when I omitted downward thrusters.
My first protocol in a drop pod is to turn on the Hydrothruster to keep me level in the air so I can quickly do what I need to.
Now that both the streams are up I can open them both and sync them.
Arrival is also a good movie about learning new languages with a sci Fi backdrop

I heard tonight (2/8/22) that there is indeed a jump drive bug. Last night mine was not working in creative (I have the Elite Tech Drive) until I clicked on the control panel of each jump drive.
Yeah the Railguns in Wrong Way Up would be OP, you already have random shots blowing up exposed hydrogen tanks! No need to do that with a weapon.
An idea for a Series for ya Splitsie: a mobile base space ship. Build a defined hulk for the episode, you can repair/replace the outer shell and change the inside as you see fit, but the outside profile can’t change (changing from light armor to heavy or adding plates is ok). Inside the hulk is the only place you can refine and produce new parts. You build a planetary lander in large grid but other than that everything else is small grid. To have something to do maybe you need to find extra system Jump Drive parts from each planet before you leave.
I think there are some aspects of what w4sted wants to do next that you'll quite enjoy 🙂

In my experience since the update, the Jump Drives are glitched, but I think the cause is actually from the gravity influence of the planets being incorrect. As even after hitting 0g and being 50km from any planet's surface, I was unable to jump until I was 20-30km further away.
Makes sense as there was something related to that which was supposed to be fixed
To be a fair race, I think you should start from the same place each time. With the survival pod already landed. Go ahead and include a pile of tablets with GPS to nearby ore patches. This would make it the build practices and abilities of the player vs a set environment. Makes sure you're on the right side of the planet, distances would be "known" between the planets.
In short, someone should make it a scenario. Just the two planets involved, no NPC or pirates to worry about. Might have more control over the race if the world "settings" like inventory size and weld/grind/assembler speeds are locked.
If this would start a real speed running competition you will probably see that, but doing the random start adds its own charm since the distance to different ores will have an effect on how you go about harvesting materials, do you go with a bigger cargo capacity or a faster to build miner?
The way we're approaching this is very much about how interesting it might be to watch. I think it makes for more interesting viewing if things are intentionally random much like random start Minecraft speed runs are done. Less control and more reaction 🙂
@@Flipsie Yeah but with this game it's like generating the same minecraft world and dropping you in it somewhere new each time. After modding some planets myself, if you can find a spot on a planet you recognize, or if you manually enter the same gps coords every time, you could get really good at a specific spot, or treck out for the same set of resources everytime. It's _almost_ random seed, but if you were motivated, you could exploit it.
I would love to see a version of this with Purgatory or Omicron, or a different planet with similar gravitational and weather hazards
FYI: Currently, while I cannot access my recent Industrial Overhaul save, the new one I began a few days ago is running fine, heavily modded, but no water.
2 things i would have done differently: more turbines earlier and building a connector early

If you can get to space in the starter ship you can get to mars in 5 hours from that point normally. It takes 5 hours to fly at max speed.
I used the spotlight set it track everything and then it would follow me as i mined by hand lighting up the area vereh noice

Honestly, that's probably not going to happen. The cost involved with editing these streams is too high for the number of views that they'll get (having posted edited versions before) :(
What about clang or gravity drives? i assume no but gotta go fast!?
So.. New turret control block... + hydro thrusters on turrets in a group. + target the direction you wish to go away from..
And on another point... Beacon + batteries + parachute. Attach to a landing gear... Get to planet drop Beacon without having to land and get back out...
The goal isn't a beacon, it's a respawn point but sure you can do that. Pretty sure a powered landing is faster than a parachute though (and a lot less prone to failure)
I would like to see capac vs TFE vs Splitsie vs Kanajashi vs Andrewman. And then a collaboration to escape mars but with assertive.

4:08:38 - idk now a days i play only heave modded. I don't have the patience anymore to keep looking for the ore veins. I add a modd that allows me to produce the ores.
I think there were and end goal that KSH lacked to achieve on the game. And now there's a possibility that the game will be left in the limbo because they are planning SE2.

@@Flipsie I managed to learn it by testing , also I added comparison with Kanajashi's Time , to give a try and for first time i will try OBS and record a video ... we will see :D
Just a thought, adding a medium cargo to the survival kit allows you to dump more stone at a time and also to store other items, would that help in the beginning

@@Flipsie I tested and I think I need to do multiple runs to know :) but the idea is that you build it directly and fill it up before going for the lake, and have it build interior plates for the wind turrets and tower while on the way.
By the way, while I had a lot more luck with finding the right ores, I had the full assembler and refinery up in just under 1 hour.
Going to try to make a run where I capture the run when I have time to make the whole run in one go.

Suggestion for a series.... You pick you enemy NPC mod(s) and 2 mods of your choice. Let your discord pick 5 from a selection of say 20, then game on.

think when i get back from my travels tomorrow im going to time myself to a random single player to see how fast i can do this game play to mars see if i can beat your time. and id put my lvl of experience to space engineers to be less then or close to capac.
Capac is potentially a dark horse with this stuff, given the right motivation I think he could surprise us all 😄
Just a thought but if you used something like starlink for connecting to a server wouldn't the delays be very similar?
The cables the internet spine makes for big differences in lag or latency depending on distance which translates to hops packets make between the server and router at home but I imagine that the number of satellites won't be very different and not make as much difference in lag and latency.
Definitely worth investigating before dropping the hundereds of dollars on a fix that might not work.
If you both used starlink I meant. Then the lag would be comparable, also starlink came to mind but any space internet would be similar

You had so many hiccoughs at the beginning it was unreal, still, a great time all considering.
Might sound a little sour, but I did have some trouble watching this due to the way Kanajashi would speak to his chat. I suppose that I'm just used to the humility and respect with which you treat everyone...
Still, he deserved his win and his ship did look real good.
Hoping for more races... A possible one for Capac to join in with, you need to reach a planet he is on while he builds a base with enough weapons to stop you landing at it.
I'm just glad I've got such an awesome group of people in my community nearly all of whom are just trying to help when they offer input. One thing I've found that helps take things in a positive way is just assume everyone is speaking English as a second language, since written tone in English is really quite hard (doesn't work all the time, but does help). I also love a good discussion, something to challenge me to think through a problem, it's something I'm not sure kana is as used to.
It probably wouldn't surprise you that capac and I spend a lot of our time off stream debating and discussing all sorts of political and controversial things, challenging each other's ideas and biases.
@@Flipsie I bet Capac is a great person for debate, he has such a great sense of humour and is clearly intelligent and knowledgeable, you are lucky to have him. I know from my university years that finding a good partner for a discussion is really hard, as a lot of people get so defensive over their views.
I find the fact that you are not afraid to learn new things and admit mistakes another attractive thing about your content and makes it a lot more comfortable to watch.

There's a badge for completing the tutorial (I think) and the rest are DLC. I'm not 100% on that, but pretty sure

Are the maths multiplicative like 2 speeds and 2 yields means you have the speed of 3 refinerys so does that mean you have effectively 6 yields?
I think yields is more efficient power wise than speeds but if power isn’t an issue speed would be quicker in the end.. UNLESS it takes you longer to go get gold than it does to refine the previous batch because the refinery would then be idle while you are still digging… which would in turn make having yield net you more quicker.
Also i retract my first statement in this comment.. i think you would just get higher total from yields but receive it slower because you used yeilds instead of speeds.
Speed modules are additive, while yield modules follow a multiple where 4 yield modules doubles refinery ore output. A speed module acts like 1 whole new device for speed, so 1 speed modules doubles the output speed at cost of double the energy, 2 speed modules triples base output at a cost of triple the energy. The Yield module increases yield by an amount that causes 4 of them to output 200% of normal ore yields: (You get 4kg Nickel for every 10kg Nickel Ore you put in for example (.4), 4 yield modules would double that to .8, but 2 yield modules will top Iron out at 100% from since you start by getting 70% to begin with).
Most people start with and mix and match speed modules and/or efficiency modules (efficiency reduces energy cost by half) which can be built with mostly early game resources, and don't worry about yield modules until they are trying to get late game stuff refined like uranium magnesium or platinum.
Also speed modules and efficiency modules can affect the assembler, making 5 assemblers for the cost of 1 and 4 speed modules, or reducing energy consumption (good for low energy starts). Yield modules are only good for the refinery, so breaking down speed and efficiency modules to replace with yield and moving them to change out upgrades later on isn't usually a big deal.
I could break the speed limit and make it to Mars in no time without a jump drive or thrusters
I didn't watch the entire video. It's probably, potentially, faster to mine in space. I would craft a couple of hydro tanks for the suit. And just go to space with only the suit to quickly scout for ore and ice. If it looks bad I would just restart with a new seed. And when I would find a good seed I would go back to drop pod and only build the minimum to get the survival kit in space and build and mine the rest in space. Or, maybe you had already ruled out mining in space?
Very unlikely to be faster in space, there are larger distances between asteroids, random generation of what's in them could mean you never find what you're looking for. Much quicker to find the stuff you need on earth (unless you get as unlucky as I did which is rare)
@@Flipsie I thought that maybe because you can spot ore from far away and practically always mine exposed ore and no need to go back to base because you could always bring your base with you. All those things could save time. But yeah, you would also have to spend a lot of time searching for ore.
@@TiriPon Yes, just a bit of bad luck not finding one of them will set you back significantly, even if you find them but 15 km away will have an effect.
And you need to get the starting materials ready, going up just in the pod is not going to be a fast space start, you have to little thrusters to scout around gathering ores, and flying just with jetpack will quickly eat up time due to distances. You really need a bigger miner to capitalize on the easier to mine patches.
For large amounts of ore, especially the harder to mine like gold, mining a patch in space with a big miner is way faster.
The question is if you make up the time you need to spend to get to that point.
But the answer is only an 4 hour test away :)

While looking at the planet when you guys were talking I couldn't help to notice. That it looks like someone took a long peace of tape and took part off the clouds out in the left middle ish part of the planet.

mhh.. getting to space is not realy the problem , the starting pod is perfectly capable to go into space, the problem may be actualy to survive to get there , as it take some time and you need oxygen but i think a couple of bottle could actualy make it happen... did i miss some rule?
OH..... they want to use jump drive , mmhhh... it would take alot of time to get to mars.. i would have just took what i needed and started the travel, hoping the adversary can't get to the jumpdrive in time :D
Jump drive is dramatically faster, to slow boat your way there takes at least 5 hours and both of us got our first runs done in less time than that
@@Flipsie yes , my new plan now is to go space, and work over all asteroids i come across while i make my way to mars to try and build the jump drive , for pure masochism.
How about attempting a no suit survival to Mars?
- build spaceship
- build spacestation or lunar stadion
- establish a survival ready Martian base.
I think this one could be an interesting challenge.
That probably will turnout to be a pre build spacestation to launch and deploy it it will be very difficult to build in space without a suit.
But i like to see splitsie figure out to keep himself pressurixed in space at all times
