This a paving crews dream job ,1 pass ,no manholes ,no curbs . Just a lot of backing up for the truck driver !
Crew my dad drove for wanted to go nonstop. 3 trucks minimum waiting on paver....it was crazy in the early 90s. Loved it tho. Sometimes they'd let me ride along on the paver. They had a blast that a teen was livid to learn about it and the engineering about road design.
How do.they.manage around manholes?

My dad worked for the Department of Highways before he retired. He started from the bottom and worked his way up to Acting District Manager (After the previous District Manager passed away). At one point when I was a kid, my dad was part of a crew that paved asphalt on the Highway. The asphalt is extremely hot and dangerous if you're not careful. A crew was putting pavement down on a street in front of some houses many years ago. A little girl saw them putting it down and thought it would be nice to be the first to step on the new road. One of the guys saw the girl running towards them wearing a dress...barefoot. The man yelled for her to stop, but she either didn't hear him or didn't care to listen. The guy ran through the asphalt to try and stop her. The girl jumped in with both feet and sank to her ankles. Thankfully, she was quickly snatched up by the worker. He ran full blast towards the small kiddy pool in the front yard to soak her feet. About this time, the mother, I believe, heard the girl screaming and went outside to see the guy dunking her feet in the water. The damage was done, her feet were red and covered in blisters. Some other guys in the work crew ran over with some kind of soap stuff that's designed to eat through the tar in the asphalt in case it was stuck to her skin. The asphalt is bad because it burns like lava. It adheres to your skin and continues to burn.

@@saukraya3254 She sank up to her ankles is what I was told. Though it may not have been that deep. She ran out where the guys were leveling out asphalt fresh out of the dump truck. It was still hot enough that the tar hadn't set the aggregate in place. I heard this story from my dad, who used to put asphalt down for the Department of Highways in West Virginia. He was acting district manager when he retired (previous district manager died of an aneurysm.) Fresh asphalt straight out of the truck is soft because the black tar stuff sets once it cools.
Here's a video of a crew pouring some asphalt for a driveway. It pours out like typical gravel, but it has whatever type of tar they use that coats the aggregate. If you jumped on that pile with one foot, you'd sink in quite a bit. Also, notice the steam coming off it. Not dust, steam. It's like a hot breath in the cold of winter...but you can see the guys are dressed for hot weather. It's got enough heat and moisture for steam to rise off of it. Extremely hot.

Nevertheless, asphalt is usually a mixture of peable aggregate mix with binder (tar). A freshly laid can even support a steamroll, much less a human child, but still can burn the skin at 300 degrees.

Looks like a decent job.
I think the base is the most important part. Same thing if they do a lousy job in milling the old surface. If it has humps or dips, or unevenness side-to-side, the paver will just follow that surface. It's just like painting or wallpapering over unfinished drywall. You will still see (or feel) the defects as they will "telegraph" through.
When I was a kid, my dad worked for a paving company as a second job to his steel mill job. He drove a tri axle mack and a roller, in the summer I used to ride along with him, dang that was fun!!! I was going to comment before you said it, that was probably just a little better than a base mix, usually used as a non DOT road mix (no inspections) and doesn't have to be as pretty as a drive way for Mrs Joan Q Public. Cool to see it again, I could smell it through my computer screen, it brought back some great memories!!

I did enjoy that! I worked for a company, many years ago, that laid road's, footways, driveways, and on at least one instance, an indoor basketball court for the Police Service in HMS Ganges, a land-based 'ship' at Shotley, in Suffolk!
Watching the crews work with a Blaw-Knox paver, and a mix of Bamford and Ingersoll-Rand machinery was an almost magical experience. I only used to do the measuring.
The smell, and the waves of heat were almost evident in your video! :-)

i really enjoy watching this type of video. laying asphalt to me is like putting the finishing touch on a project, or almost finished. it just seems like a huge upgrade from the county dirt/gravel road.

HMAC actually stands for Hot Mix Asphaltic Concrete. If you have a swell in front of the the steel wheel, aka breakdown roller, the operator needs to slow down he is moving too fast. In this condition he is actually stretching the mat and not compacting it. You are also correct that August in Texas sucks for laying mix for me, I'm the QCQA and have to walk on it all day. Paving contractor aren't always happy to see me. I love this stuff though, lab and roadway certified for testing and Level II certified for mix design, opposite of you I don't like concrete even though I am ACI Field and PCI Level 1& 2 certified, those wheel barrels are heavy.

I give it a year tops and the edges will be falling apart. Some asked about tack and yes it does no good on a dirt or base road wet. Now if the road was primed a week or so in advance it would help with the bonding of asphalt and road.

I love to watch paving! When they were paving my name thoroughfare in my neighborhood I had never seen so many dump trucks. There was one for raising the storm drains,they had five for milling, and six for paving. My road was not big enough to require a buggy, but they had mostly cat equipment except I think one roller was a Hom. It was red so I don’t know what company that is made by.

Dirt Perfect I work for one of the biggest asphalt companies in the country. So I see em everyday. No Volvo’s though. We LOVE our CATs, Vögeles, HAMMs and Wirtgens.

You need a minimum of 7 crew members really . Paver op ., 2 screw men 1 lute and 1 shovel person and your breakdown and finish roller
Road paving is a piece of cake.
Driveways etc. labor intensive work!
In my county... some roads are paved with hot mix... especially those that run by the county officials homes and businesses. The remainder are chip and seal.
The next county south of us is mostly dirt roads... some don’t even get gravel! Nonetheless it comes in handy when you are navigating... if you’re headed south, you always know when the road turns to dirt, you’ve crossed County Line highway!
You know... there’s always something good mixed in with the bad!!!
Where I live in Maine I've worked as a flagger on some very big highway/state roadways here we don't use shuttle buggies we use a mix of triaxle dump trucks and live bottom tractor trailers when I was flagging in the fall my favorite place was to walk beside the paver holding my slow sign allowing traffic to go by slowly from a 1 way rolling construction zone it was warm. Been there done that in the dead of summer 90° plus following by the pacer
Does this ever bring back memories when I sat in the operator’s seat of a Cedarapids paver, followed by a Huber finishing roller. All was good until we rented the roller to a town’s DPW. They managed to strip the gears coming down an incline. Given the amount of traffic I’ve seen in past videos, I thing the current wisdom today is the chip seal the road, but I really don’t know how long that lasts.
I did this job, screed operator for 18 yrs, I was also a foreman, started on the tamper,then the finish roller, then breakdown roller, then screedman. I miss it but don’t miss it at the same time. Lol

My parent's neighborhood needs this asap. I always wonder about the cost and process to get a dirt road paved in a non-pubic road.
Brilliant. I watched another channel showing a resurfacing in some fancy asphalt in Sweden. There was nothing to learn since not one word was spoken of the machines or the people. Not even a close up of the machines, I take my hat off to you for doing what the swede could not, make it entertaining.

they used to spray down hot tar to seal the gravel base then apply the asphalt top of that to bond the two together

I ran the steel drum roller for 10 years and the paver for 1 year on a paving crew and worked winter repair at the asphalt plant for 5 winter's asphalt temp in north Carolina 325 to 275 I do miss working with it but most of all I miss working winter shut down at the plant

You may have noticed while watching the roller that they have steam coming off the rollers. They actually use the steam to help with rolling the asphalt. Those rollers take on a lot of water to do this and they are amazingly efficient at it.
The steam from the rollers is coming from the water that sprays them, the water is to stop the hot sticky tarmac (asphalt) sticking to the roller

Here in Nebraska on a large job contractors will use belly dump trailers, windrow the asphalt. And then use an elevator to pick up windrow and feed paver. Keeps paver moving, no stopping for truck to back up.

We use shuttle buggy's on state work, it's the same idea just the truck dumps in the shuttle buggy which hold roughly 25 ton heaping full and has 3 conveyers that feed the paver. Generally run 20 trucks give or take.

Out here when they got miles to pave they skip using dump trucks and use tri axle belly dump trailers, the paver pushes machine that scoops it off the ground and feeds the paver.

looks good, and looks like its probably a "c" mix, we run a similar operation, except we are running roadtec paving spread and cat rollers. when i'm not doing the testing I'm on top of the shuttle buggy you mentioned!
Question about thickness and potholes.
I heard that if pavement is less than 6 inches after compaction and cooling, it will allow potholes to form, if it is 6 inches or greater then there will be no potholes. Is this accurate?
I can understand city / town not wanting to pay for the extra thickness of paving material, that would easily double the cost of the job.

@@jaquigreenlees no matter what you put on top it all goes to what is under it. Most holes are from poor soil or water infiltration. We have to use ground stabilization here because our soil is so bad and our roads show it. Freezing and thawing is especially hard on roads as well.
Always interesting to see the difference in how things are done across the various states. One thing I’ve noticed from your videos is that your roads seem much narrower than what I’m accustomed to. Is that an artifact from the camera or are they actually as narrow as the look on the videos. What is the protocol for passing by someone, who takes the ditch? I’ll have to go back and check but I don’t remember seeing many center lines in your videos. Anyway thanks again for the interesting video.

Bituminous concrete is the correct name. They put binder down as a base coat. Done asphalt for a few years and didnt like it. The guys on the screws are your money makers. You are paid by sq ft not tonnage. If they can save an 1/8 inch on the whole job that's alot of money. I would definitely say stick with concrete, I did lol. Great video!
No they don't put a binder down. The binder, or tack coat is only used if you are putting hot mix on top of existing asphalt. I work for the county so we don't make money on jobs, but each job is cost driven. If you break it down, the cost is per ton for us. When we contract the work out, the costs are broken down by both hourly and tonnage since the equipment and labor is based on hours and the material is based on tonnage. When you go to the batch plant you don't tell them you have 60 sq ft to do, you order your mix by the ton. One ton of hot mix will cover 80 sq ft at a depth of 2 inches.
@@mikel9567 binder is not a spray coat. Binder is a bigger rock asphalt to build the road up and give more stability to it. It doesn't seal as well, look as good, or drive on very well. Surface coat has smaller rock, seals very well when compacted correctly and makes a great driving surface. As far as being the one buying or making the the asphalt yes it is by the ton. When it is bid thru the feds and my state, it is by area. Same way concrete and most other things are bid. They don't care if you use 50k tons of asphalt for a job that only pays for 40k ton. State, county, and cities buy what they need by the ton and is alot different than bid jobs.
Driver's job is to stay in the center of the paver box and follow the operator's hand signals, so I'm busy with that stuff and the operator pushed me through a overhead power line,was many years ago but I Remember!!! Operator's fault,not mine!

We live in a very rural area with mostly gravel roads as it's mostly seasonal camps except for a half dozen of us year rounders. The Township got some Gov't. money they needed to spend so they paved our 4 mile road. The first year there were 3 fatalities as the young ones used it as a drag strip. Since we have no local police there was no one to stop them. The paved road was nice but not worth the loss of life.

Its the roller that makes it look good. The paver jhst lays it down and the roller does the beauty work. Tea im sure it does roll out in front of that one because ut probably weighs 10 tons

Did this for a summer btwn my soph and jr yrs of HS.... hot as hell asphalt will melt the soles off of high quality steel toe boots and the hot steam from the straight from the dump-bed product can easily burn your exposed skin.
Where I live, they do 2 layers of 2 inch asphalt, a few months of delay between applying the 2nd layer. This helps prevent cracking and dips and whatnot.
No, it does not help prevent anything.
Asphalt it thermoplastic, cold in 1 day, you can do the 2nd layer next day.
but you must keep ca. 180-160°C temp. from mixed to process.
and you wait too long age with oxide.
and the mix must be correct.
therefore, you wait on second day.
the most important: you cannot build over mud.
even worst the second layer has more time on air.
age with oxide.

there isn't only one thing standing in the way
If you leave one layer for months then surface then you have to clean it and tack coat it, which costs more money. Also if you are doing two layers they could well be different mixes, first layer for strength second more for durability and skid resistance.

My city only has 2 seasons, dig and pave... because of that, they love to take their time and waste money on that stuff. There has never been a time where there wasn't several roads under construction. Also, I doubt slightly different mixes make that big of a difference. After all, it isn't like concrete.
Sometimes there will be a rubber tire roller in between the steel rollers. It just depends on the specifications by whoever paid for the work.

Asphalt is considered a type of concrete. Concrete just means various materials that form together into one material. Some times you will see it called asphalt concrete. vs Portland cement concrete. Just a different binder
Mark G Yip, most of what I mix is Asphaltic concrete. Just a bituminous binder instead of cement powder binder.

That was prob binder mix. Base has a lot of 57 gravel or 56 depending on what y’all call it in your area. Surface is just river sand and man made sand and the oils they use for blacktop. This is what I do for a living. Drive a Tri axle hauling blacktop

It's a lot prettier than concrete, and nicer for painting road markings on. It would have been interesting to hear a bit more about that big roller. How much does it weigh? Does it vibrate? I looked real hard when it passed close to the camera and we could see the edge. It might have been a second pass, because I couldn't see any compression. So that would have been their crew's equivalent of Jerry? I wonder if he can curse as well as Jerry, and if yes, what he was saying under his breath to your drone? I suspect it would have been totally priceless. 🤬 A nice video though Mike, and I appreciate you adding variety to your channel.

They say that it bonds better with the gravel.

luis santos They do the same thing in the UK. It’s a bond coat of thinner sticker bitumen that aids tar on tar cohesion.

paving & roofing 2 of the toughest jobs, roller operator makes good or bad job, if you have one that doesn't wait till the roller is at a complete stop before changing directions, he's going have divots all up the down the road

The road I lived on was so rough you couldn’t go more than 5 mph, my dad blew a shock and everything, this is in the adirondacks in upstate ny, they tore up the road and had it dirt for 2 years because I was better a smooth dirt road than what it was, when they got the money, they paved it over, already some cracks though haha
Places in the south where I've worked the local government requires tack to be put on the rock before its paved.

Could have used 2” of fiber reinforced asphalt with the same result, crack elimination and longevity.
Ifn' them boys have a paver like that, they musta be havn' an Ashphalt Grinder with a discharge conveyor to load directly into a 10 wheeler, end dump and/or transfer rig.

What is the cost per foot or yard or 100 yards and is there a minimum? I have seen pavement that didn't cure right and on a hot day people were driving thru it like it was mud.
That's like asking how much a house costs.
How far from the plant - more trucks if a long trip, trucks can not make multiple journey
The more you buy the cheaper.
What material - there are a lot of mixs, different ones if more layers. Mix depends on traffic, the weather that the road will get in winter and summer, how durable you want it for your money etc.
Can you close the road and for how long.

Are you laying by tonnage per mile as I assume in this video or are you laying to a designed profile that will be checked.

There is no minimum but the paver and roller will still have to be paid to be delivered. A half load on a truck may not be much less than a full load. You can lay small amounts of most mixes without a paver spreading the black with an excavator. But the excavator driver has to be good and the end result will not be as good as produced by a paver.
If the pavement was rutting on a hot day the wrong binder (tar) for the weather conditions. You can get binders that ar good in hot weather but if it gets well below freezing they just crack. Or good below freezing but rut when it is hot. Or you pay for very expensive binders that have been chemically modified for hot and cold, the greater the temperature range the more money.

First the road comes through, then the settlers. Next thing you know you are living in the city. I'll keep my dirt road.
And they need a by pass...more paving.
They get in the country and start complaining about the roads. They want them like they were in town. Stay in town. we don't need or want you.
