Brilliant writing from Julian Fellowes -- and perfectly delivered by the two most important romantic leads. Easily, the most mesmerizing scene in all 6 seasons of Downton Abbey......wow!
I think Jullian Fellows intended a comparison between this scene and an earlier scene when they’re preparing for the wedding. Where Matthew is irritated that he can’t walk up and down the aisle without assistiance and Lavinia tells him that he can lean on her coming down. It seems like it hasn’t even crossed his mind that he could lean on her, while here he immediately replies to Mary: “you are my stick”. I think it’s metaphor that he could always count on Mary.
Matthew was so, so in love with Mary. You can see it in this scene: he is drawn to her, can't stop himself kissing her. But despite all that, he was willing to stick with his promises and marry Lavinia anyway, spend the next forty or fifty years with the wrong woman, all for principle. Matthew's unwavering moral compass is admirable, and the show is lesser without it.
@@wendygrady1670 Of all the many great -- really great -- scenes in in all 6 seasons, THIS was by far the best. Classic. I watch it over and over and over again.
It’s absolutely the acting done more with their facial expressions, body movements, timber of their voices. When are Michelle and Dan going to act together again - we need it so badly
This scene blows me away whenever I watch it. The detail o the facial expressions- unbelievable acting. At the beginning when Mary is upstairs and is watching Matthew and you see her swallow- swallowing the regret, the tears, the might have been s, that one second - the emotion speaks more than a 1000 words. To me the thing with Mary is a whole season 1 she could not see what was in front of her - and when she did in episode 6, the kiss, the proposal- we never got to see them happy and in love together- those two months happened off screen - and then she dithered and Matthew had enough and broke it off without an engagement and went off to war. We only truly see how in love she is with Matthew throughout season 2 - when she can’t have him.
I still shiver. Dan is so perfect. His voice, his eyes... I stopped watching when he died because to be honest I watched Downtown for him. The first time I saw his face I was wow gobsmacked

Of course Matthew is finally freely admitting that he wants and loves Mary. Which I love. He was enamored with her the minute he laid eyes on her. I think in this scene he is finally actually realizing how much he loves Mary as his true love. I think it's been hiding under the surface ever since he brought Lavinia to Downton.
The cinematography and music in this scene just blow this scene away. It is so beautifully shot. It almost did not matter what they said. This scene was a whole season and 5 years on the show in coming. We know the entire season 2 that Mary is totally in love with Matthew. It’s in her face, her actions, conversations with violet, her father. Her whole family knows. But we are never sure with Matthew, he never has a conversation with anyone that indicates that he cares more for her than as a friend. You can see it in the way he looks at her in many scenes - but I think we are not sure until that moment when he admits he wishes he could throw over Lavinia and kisses her. Well done Julian Fellowes
That's interesting; I remember thinking about it the other way around. I felt it was so obvious and clear that Matthew was crazy about her in contrast to Mary's indecisiveness and uncertainty.
In series 1 yes - she seemed indecisive- he more sure. In series 2 - you see how totally in love she was with him from the moment she spots him in the great hall when he returns with Lavinia. He not so much.
Only through his terrific acting -- you could *see* and deven more, *feel* the intense love Matthew felt for Mary. He had to move on in his life and loved Lavinia, but it was abundantly clear that Mary was his *true* love. And it all came to a head when they danced in this scene. Breathtaking....
I can not say enough about this scene -the emotion is so intense- on both sides. But prior to that in season 2 - Mary’s looks were much more intense. Matthew appeared to move on. Also there is many a discussion between Mary and robert / rosemund/ Isobel about her love for him or trying to get him back. There are no Matthew discussions with Isobel or otherwise. Not until after Lavinia dies anyway.
@@helenhern893 Very true, Helen. BUT -- when Mary couldn't/wouldn't make up her mind to marry him because she was concerned whether Cora's child would be a boy and therefore, become the heir and not Matthew -- Matthew would have none of it. He loved her desperately, but he was nobody's fool and had backbone to move on. And that he did -- he met Lavinia and did fall in love with her, but of course, it was insanely obvious to everyone that he still had deep feelings for Mary. You see it all over the scenes when he arrives with Lavinia to meet the Crawleys. Mary is oh-so-polite but dying inside and Matthew's constant glances at Mary were so telling. And because he was so noble, even though deep inside he wanted Mary, he felt he owed it to Lavinia to stay the course. The *only* discussions with Matthew came from Cousin Violet when she goes to his bedroom late at night. Don't think for a moment that Matthew didn't desperately want to be with Mary -- but he was committed to Lavinia, and certainly after he was able to walk again, he would never, ever cast off Lavinia.
When they killed Matthew off that was the end of love on Downton Abbey. Matthew was part of the cast which should have stayed in the story. I know he wanted out but surely he would have reconsidered under right circumstances.

Matthew:- Actually I rather like it, it's from a show that flopped. Zip goes a million or something. (Offers hand to dance. They revel in each others arms. Mary breaks the comfortable silence) Mary:- Can you manage without your stick? Matthew:- You are my stick. (With a satisfying sigh she realises the silence isn't comforting as it only draws her soul closer and closer to his. With every step and every breath, her desire for him intensifies and she cannot hold her peace anymore) Mary:- We were a show that flopped. (They look into each others eyes. His is filled with regret and hers is a pain of loving another's love. Dignity and Respect be damned all she wanted was to lock her lips with his and never let go of his flame soul) Matthew:- Oh God Mary... I'm so so sorry. Do you know how sorry I am? Mary:- Don't be. It wasn't anyone's fault... If it was it was mine. (Her resolve returns, the uncertainty of losing him gripped her heart.) Matthew:- You know cousin Violet came to me, told me to marry you (Hope stirs her thoughts. With disbelief she looks at him) Mary:- when was this? Matthew:- A while ago. When they knew I would walk again. Mary:- Classic granny. (A pause. She needed to know more) what did you say? Matthew:- I couldn't accept Lavinia's sacrifice of her life, her children, her future. And then give her the brush off when I was well again well I couldn't could I? (Resolve in her heart. She was indeed a strong woman) Mary:- of course not. (He looks to her for a rebuttal. A cry from her warm heart, that many presumed to be cold- stone) Matthew:- however much I want to.. Mary:- Absolutely not.. (And they unite. Their desires take control of them. No more could their souls be apart. Their hearts as one they draw in on each other. Their kiss intensifying with every moment and every note of symphonies ringing in their souls at the thought of loving the one they truly love and belong in. Mary indeed opened her heart completely to love and nothing would stand in her way)
Absolutely perfect description of THE greatest scene in all six seasons of Downton Abbey. Great writing, great acting, great cinematography, great music. Cinema magic.
I have seen hundreds of leading actors with great looks, but it's been a long, long, long time since I've witnessed star power like Dan Stevens. I realize Mary and Lavinia are in this scene, but it's really all him. His presence fills the screen, and in addition to his absolutely dreamy voice, his facial expressions are achingly beautiful. Clearly, one of the best scenes in the entire 6-year season. This shows why his loss was so great and why, even though Downton Abbey is not about one person and the show certainly did go on for three more seasons, it was never the same without Matthew. Very reminiscent of his very first major project -- BBC's 2006 3-part mini-series, "The Line of Beauty", based on a Booker Award-winning novel. Would love to see Dan Stevens in other romantic dramas, such as the great 1945 British movie, "Brief Encounter"; Somewhere in Time"; or An Affair to Remember....but he's still a little too young for the latter. In this iconic scene, the photography is breathtaking and the change in the music from what's playing on the phonograph, "Look for the Silver Lining" seemlessly transitions into "Matthew's Theme", the lush but haunting music written by John Lunn. And the writing -- the writing!! Julian Fellowes, this was beyond brilliant.
Did his shadow really hang over the show? Seems like after the 1st few episodes of season 4, Mary forgot Matthew. And definitely in season 5 he was all but forgotten. Edith’s character and story became much more compelling in the latter 1/2 of the series
@@helenhern893 -- Well, we will have to disagree. Yes, there were other storylines -- there had to be or the show could have not continued. But his shadow most definitely hung over the show. And it culminated when Mary went to his grave in that unforgettable scene. Even though she wanted to live her life and move on, her thoughts were *always* and forever with Matthew.

How can be this two show us the real love ? It’s absolutely crazy !!! But it’s like real we feel the love in our hearts isn’t?! And this song I just love it seems like make by the angels ! We felt the butterflies in stomach too! And again of course I cry in this scene like in every chapter 💔🇧🇷
The song is "an ideal marriage"...they play versions of it all the time in matthew/mary scenes...the first time is when he first holds her hand in season 1...after discussing the entail...and love the violin version in season 2 episode 1 when she first sees matthew...
It was NEVER quite the same after he left! The whole romance between Matthew and Lady Mary was the center of the first three seasons and then he...DIES?!?! It ruined any other possible men for her and for me. Henry Talbot just wasn't ever enough!
Matthew is everything I look for in a man. But this one scene breaks me because even though I know Matthew and Mary were meant to be together, he should have waited.
I remember watching this show just before starting my first job ever, a few months before. I got to watch 2 whole seasons in a row. Then I stopped watching somewhere in season 3, just after Sybil's death (which broke me), so that was before I could watch Matthew die. I'm kinda glad I stopped then. It would have broken me to watch Matthew die. So in my mind, Matthew and Mary got married and then that''s all I remember. XD Happy ending. Better this way. Thinking of doing a rewatch / watch, this time for the whole show. But... seeing as I remember Matthew and Matthew & Mary together were kinda the main reason I was watching... Wonder when I'll stop, if I do decide to start watching it again. XD Ah, and then there's the Dowager Countess, who I absolutely adored. The music in this, the acting and the way it's so beautifully shot - I'll remember this scene forever. Easily my favorite one.
As much as I loved watching Downton Abbey, and I did watch all seasons, I couldn’t watch it again. I just couldn’t. Watching a few snippets on UA-cam is fine it takes little time.
It is actually MATTHEW'S THEME. While given other names -- Such Good Luck; Mary & Matthews Theme, etc., it is ONLY played when Matthew is in a scene and also when Mary is thinking about Matthew. John Lunn, who wrote all the music for Downton Abbey, saved his most beautiful -- and hunting -- music for Matthew, the heart and soul of DA.
Part of me will never forgive Dan Stevens for leaving Downton Abbey. Matthew was (and still is) my favourite character. He was Mary's great love.
I stopped watching it because of it. I was going through a hard time so I couldn’t handle another horrible thing to handle. But everyone loves the whole thing so yeah.

(They look into each others eyes. His is filled with regret and hers is a pain of loving another's love. Dignity and Respect be damned all she wanted was to lock her lips with his and never let go of his flame soul)
Matthew:- Oh God Mary... I'm so so sorry. Do you know how sorry I am?
Mary:- Don't be. It wasn't anyone's fault... If it was it was mine.
(Her resolve returns, the uncertainty of losing him gripped her heart.)
Matthew:- You know cousin Violet came to me, told me to marry you
(Hope stirs her thoughts. With disbelief she looks at him)
Mary:- when was this?
Matthew:- A while ago. When they knew I would walk again.
Mary:- Classic granny. (A pause. She needed to know more) what did you say?
Matthew:- I couldn't accept Lavinia's sacrifice of her life, her children, her future. And then give her the brush off when I was well again well I couldn't could I?
(Resolve in her heart. She was indeed a strong woman)
Mary:- of course not.
(He looks to her for a rebuttal. A cry from her warm heart, that many presumed to be cold- stone)
Matthew:- however much I want to..
* sigh * Matthew and Mary....❤❤❤
Never get bored of this scene
Best couple 😍
Without Dan Stevens, Downton Abbey was still very good, but it lost its major character and was never as compelling.
It was never the same without Matthew. He was the show. He and Mary. Wow.
@@wendygrady1670 Agree 1000%. It was still wonderful TV, but never the same. The shadow of Matthew Crawley hung over every episode from Seasons 4-6.
I’ll forgot about the show but when I see this I fall in love with Matthew all over again ❤
-Where is everyone?
-Not sure. Cousin Violets gone home
-What about you?
-Waiting for Lavinia and Mother
-Doctor Clarkson wants Lavinia to stay here. He´ll see her tomorrow
-I don't know this one?
-Actually, I rather like it
I think it was in a show that flopped. Zip goes a million or something
- Can you manage without your stick?
- You are my stick
-We were a show that flopped
-Oh god, Mary. I am so so sorry. You know how sorry I am
-Don't be.
It wasn't anyone's fault.
If it was, it was mine
-You know cousin Violet came to me; told me to marry you
-When was this?
-A while ago. When we knew I would walk again
-Classic Granny. What did you say?
-That I couldn't accept Lavinia´s sacrifice of her life, her children her future, and then give her the brush off when I was well again, well I couldn't could I?
-Of course not
-However much I might want to
-Absolutely not
-Hello?
-What are you doing up?
-Shouldn´t we be getting back?
-It's decided.
You're staying here.
Doctor Clarkson coming in the morning, so he can treat all of you together.
You can borrow some things until Matthew brings you what you need.
I´ll go and organize a room
-How do you feel?
-Like a nuisance
-You could never be that
-I mean it, Matthew. Don't ever let me be a nuisance. Don't ever let me get in the way. Please
Must’ve been a deadly kiss
Only love can hurt like this
I think Jullian Fellows intended a comparison between this scene and an earlier scene when they’re preparing for the wedding.
The way he looks at her is the way every girl want to be look at.
best dance scene + kiss EVER! #marymatthew
Peccato che uomini e poi mariti così ce ne sono pochi! Anzi improbabili!!! Matthew attore e personaggio splendido👍❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
This is one of my favorite films.
The song is "an ideal marriage"...they play versions of it all the time in matthew/mary scenes...the first time is when he first holds her hand in season 1...after discussing the entail...and love the violin version in season 2 episode 1 when she first sees matthew...
thank you!
It’s actually “Look for the silver lining”
@@kimnguyen1227 At he scene opening it is...but after Mary says, "We were a show that flopped..." the music changes to "an ideal marriage"...
Oh my god
I love ❤️ your episode ❤️❤️❤️💖
I hated the part where Matthew died. I literally cried 😭😭. Mary and Matthew were made for each other.😭❤️
I love this..they both realize they're still in Love
One of my favourite MM scenes…so romantic, they were made for each other😢it’s so sad
Amo a Mattew, por bello, caballero, honesto y brillante, que más se puede pedir!!!🤤
Not me watching this scene everyday for a dose of serotonin lmao
Best scene ever!
Agree 1000%.
It was NEVER quite the same after he left! The whole romance between Matthew and Lady Mary was the center of the first three seasons and then he...DIES?!?! It ruined any other possible men for her and for me. Henry Talbot just wasn't ever enough!
It's unbearable to want someone so much knowing you can't have them😒
Heat of the Moment is their true song.
Matthew is everything I look for in a man. But this one scene breaks me because even though I know Matthew and Mary were meant to be together, he should have waited.
BEST SCENE OF THE ENTIRE SHOW
This is a great scene
If I were Lavinia, I would have slapped tf out of Matthew after Mary left 😂
Pura magia.....
It is a touching scene.
my favourite scene in the whole show:(
Please could you put up more for season 4?
I think they’re going season by season. We’re most likely almost through Season 2 scenes
Thais scene is so much beautiful 😍
At least they got a little time to just be happily married.
La escena més romàntica de la història...😍
I’m not crying, YOU’RE CRYING. 🤧😭
No, you are 😭😭😭😭🤧
What song is the violin piece during the kiss????
Sometimes I wonder how awkward (and miserable) their lives would have been had Lavinia not passed away.
Downton is not the same without Matthew. Couldn’t bring myself to watch the crash scene and the series after that 😪😭
Same here!
I hate the way they killed off mattew i cant im dying crying its so sad😢😢
Does anyone know what this music is called? By which I mean the actual score that swells later in the scene
An ideal marriage is the name...it gets more high pitched in this scene though
@@mattdavis1735 THANK YOU!!! I've been trying to find this piece
@@Suedepants100 Oh youre very welcome...it's a beautiful, beautiful piece
It is actually MATTHEW'S THEME. While given other names -- Such Good Luck; Mary & Matthews Theme, etc., it is ONLY played when Matthew is in a scene and also when Mary is thinking about Matthew. John Lunn, who wrote all the music for Downton Abbey, saved his most beautiful -- and hunting -- music for Matthew, the heart and soul of DA.
Too difficult to continue to watch without Dan Stevens
Agree 1000%. Heart and soul of the series. Yes, it was still good after Season 3, but never had the same passion.
Downton lost its charm after Matthew... Now, it feels like just another soap opera...
So very true. Matthew was the heart and soul of the series.
One best scene♥️
