    blessed David. one method we used in Jamaica, where am from is, we cut the head from the yam, we never eat that part, and we use that part for growing. the head is the top part of the root, you can identify it easily, it has a darker shade and not as bloated and has more fiber than the bottom half. if you should go to our markets to buy yams, it would always seems like your buying a half of yam, thats because we always cut the head off.

    David and all, it's good to note that yams have a cycle of growth, dormancy, then re-awakening. If you buy a yam which may have just been harvested it will need some dormant time before doing the minisett procedure. A freshly harvested yam just isn't ready to sprout. So put in the closet or dark place it may take a month or 2 before you see small buds forming usually around the neck or top and then cut for minisetts. You'll have better luck especially with yams from the store whose provenance you don't know.

    Here’s a chuckle for you. We ordered 2 books from Amazon. One of them- Grocery Row Gardening received a couple days later. Create Your Own Florida Food Forest was a different story. It left Smyrna Tennessee, and traveled to Orlando FL, Jacksonville FL, Homasassa FL, Anchorage AK (😂), back to Jacksonville FL and finally made it to our house north of Jax. Our book travelled more this year than we did! How it got to Alaska is beyond me, but I thought it was pretty cool. Both books are really good btw. Thanks and many Blessings!!

    Termites yes and thanks David for the video, I'm in the Philippines and my wife wants me to plant the Ube she calls it and it's identical to yours except purple inside, she also mentioned it sprouts a vine... strange because I also plant Gabi (taro root) in the back and it sprouts huge green leaves so no worry on a vine.
    My problem is the soil I'll have to really dig because it's sort of sandy and has tiny shells, so I'm going to use the hoe, thanks again... Oh, should I also sprinkle more ash where I plant the Yam root?
    The Yam I'm planting is mainly used for treats or candies but most people here don't eat like Westerners so I'm wondering if you ever had this purple version of Yam? Learned a new word today "Propagate" bookmarked that on my long list of words I don't hear too often.

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  6 років тому +6

      Yes - I used to have the purple type in Florida. It's awesome. I don't have it now, though. You don't need to add more ashes, but some compost is a good idea if you have it.

Or does that also depend how cold it gets in your area, I live in St. Louis Missouri zone 7 or 7B.

    The yam looks matured enough that termites consider it as tough woods. The yam you dug out has irregular shape, maybe due to hardness of the soil where it planted. Is your place temperature during winter just as the winter weather in the west coast ? If not, then it's not a suitable place to plant with.
