I made a propane fueled outboard. No more fuel issues with crap ethanol in gasoline or water in fuels. I used two 40lb forklift tanks made from Aluminum. I estimate there's a slight decrease in HP but there is also a power decrease when using ethanol blended fuel,quite a bit actually because ethanol has roughly 20% less energy than straight gas. Anyway the benefits of propane far outway gas because of the inherent issues with gas on a boat. Ps...my engines are pre ethanol so this was a simple and viable option.
Did you stay with the the same oil injection or up the oil flow on propane! i thought ethanol gives more power, only when you are racing as its 113 octane and it cools as it goes. Etanal seem great for fun fuel but can be a hassle for every day use.
love it.. i would love the powerhead off them to mount to a base plate mounted mid section with a vertical impeller set up.. 8 remove flow controlled outlet valves and a single gate shutter valve probably a rotating disc valve with one opening, one area blocked and one grid opening for weedy areas this rotator plate would have external gear teeth cut to allow it to rotate remotely. . this could be mounted in the bilge with proper exhaust set up.. to supply all direction thruster water to sail boats.. and other power boats for in harbor and docking .. with diesel engines in the bilge.. no chance of explosion from gasoline vapors.. with sail boats.. no drag from a prop even a folded one.. spring loaded outlets also.. so they are self sealing with no pressure. envision how a PCV valve shuts off yet allows flow when vacuum is applied.
HOW...MUCH???? I've looked all over the internet..and the price (M.S.R.P. new) seems to be as closely guarded a secret, as the contents of the bunkers, at area 51!! How this guy did this test, without mentioning their price..is BEYOND ME!

Sounds like the idea of spark ignition diesel is an engine that will get some of the fuel economy of a diesel without all the weight or cost of the pure diesel.
Im sure its ok and these 2 stroke have fewer moving parts. Diesel suck at making power and for the same boost pressure a gas engine 2 stroke makes way mmore power than a normal diesel. Ethanol with dfi with 2 stroke turbo is the way to go for me. And this 2 stroke is a dry sump with a vro pumps and the oil burns adding energy to the 2 stroke and you dont thro it away ever unlike a 4 joke. i riiged up my 8v92 2 stroke detroit with total loss and shes doing grerat on 6 gallons of xd-100 etec oil! This optimax is loop chared and it kind of works like the sun which is a giant plasma loop chaed 2 stroke. every lightning bolt is a plasma 2 stroke and ball lightning is a loop charged plasma rotary 2 stroke.
Exactly. Anyone that thinks Mercury would showcase a motor making that noise is being foolish and another comment about ox being better is a joke. Merc. Has had these motors a long time. A 2 stroke and diesel are almost the same anyway and with direct injection and a beefed up head for high compression there u go. Merc. Engineers are some of the best in any field and thier tech. Is used on way more than just boats.
@@sdvten Dry sump oil injected 2 stroke. there were some German 2 stroke diesels in the Rotavator that were true 2 stroke diesels. One of my favorive is the Sachs D600, there is a separate oil tank and the the oil gets pumped to the crankcase, hits the bushing bearings and and the burn up.

It is in no way a traditional Diesel engine. It's just a 2 stroke gasoline engine that has been modified to ignite diesel fuel by atomizing the fuck out of it and then igniting it with a spark plug.

But that's hard to do reliably, and seems like a set up for NOx emission maximum...? IDK
Are they clean burn or do they give off much smoke. I mean, just look at the Rolling Coal and the amount of smoke they can produce is insane. I think the diesel outboard motors have been coming for a long, long time.

@@scottwingate1235 You could turbo it if you wanted to. Diesels do not make as much power as gas engines and for the same boost bressure a a gas 2 stroke will have higher BMEP and whence more power and torque than an equal sized 2 stroke diesel.
I wonder if this diesel two stroke outboard operates with very narrow air-fuel ratio curves just like the gasoline fueled counterpart since the compression ignition engine varies engine speed by adjusting air fuel ratio. Hell, can anyone say if these outboards still use throttle plates? I visited Mercury's website and found nothing on these outboards, not even the outboards them self.

I think I'm going to put my money on the guy that has made his living for the last 30+ years on a variety of boats/vessels, up to and including Coast Guard rescue vessels, Mercury Racing boats, technical skiffs, Bay Boats, 75 mph center console fishing boats. But what do I know, I was a qualified Master Helmsman in the Navy for ships up to and including Aircraft Carriers, have my own 35' Sportfishing Cat, a 80' Sportyacht, operate many of the same types of boats as Steven Lamp.... Pretty sure if I was going to find something to question him about, probably the last thing would be his . helmsmanship. But that's just me.
My guess is that they are trying hard to cash in on NATO's "Single Fuel Directive" which basically bans gasoline storage on diesel (Or really F-34) fueled vessels. The diesel outboards would be a good option for smallcraft attached to these larger naval vessels.
where i am diesels is generally cheaper than gasoline. the only problem being most ramps i am around do not offer diesel i would have to grab gas along the way

@@colwk Absolute crap, there are many 2 stroke turbo snowmobiles that are dry sump and turbo. A wet sump just runs dirty oil around and is a mess to deal with. dry sump with vro is the way to go as it allow the motor to burn up the oil and turn it to energy.
@@jlo13800 there is and burning oil dose make energy. But burning diesel is dirty and burning oil is dirtier emissions wise. Plus having valves give you more control for more efficiency and power through the whole rev range compared to ports at the bottom of the cylinder.
@@colwk Castor based 927 maxima, i want to get about 6 gallons for my 8v92 experiment, i filled and ran xd-100 through her and its cleaned the more well, seems to run cleaner and a bit cooler as its a ful synthetic mono-grade oil but its not very cheap though. I love the stink of castor 927 castor 2T. There is no dirty waste oil to throw away now. i like the optimax engine would love to have it in my truck if i could make it fit., A crate engine 572 CID DFI 2 stroke v8 would be nice but they are not cheap and sold as racing only motors. Rotary trapping exhaust valves on the optimax would help though. The 3.2 stroke with turbo would be a sick motor for something like a mustang. Some folks have run the carbed 2.5 Vl mercs in chevy nova's at the salt flats,pretty inpressive. i got a 4l omc johnson 2 stroke small block side oiler v8 siting around i need parts to rebuild it.
@@jlo13800 I love 2 strokes too, opti's not so much. I prefer Etec (direct injection over port injection) and caster oil might be able to slip by emissions but mixed with diesel I would doubt it. From what I've read this opti uses as much fuel as a petrol opti so the only benifit is it's less explosive, down side is they can't sell it to the public because of emissions. BRP has a "project X" hopefully it is down this lines. I'd be happy with another 2 stroke but a diesel would be so much better

Io think a real diesel outboard engine will be a better choice, at this point. Oxe offer now an engine with the BMW 6L Twin turbo, a very fine diesel engine... But I think those engines will remain a choice for few applications...

Since the intake air does not go through the crank case, the lubrication is done the same way as a four stroke.
It uses 2 stroke oil and crankcase reed induction just like the Optimax gas outboard. Mercury Racing has specifications on their website.

A 2 stroke diesel must have a blower, i think there isn't enough space to install. That's why they choose the spark plug.

@@colwk Absolute crap, there are many 2 stroke turbo snowmobiles that are dry sump and turbo. A wet sump just runs dirty oil around and is a mess to deal with. dry sump with vro is the way to go as it allow the motor to burn up the oil and turn it to energy.
@@jlo13800 there is and burning oil dose make energy. But burning diesel is dirty and burning oil is dirtier emissions wise. Plus having valves give you more control for more efficiency and power through the whole rev range compared to ports at the bottom of the cylinder.
@@colwk Castor based 927 maxima, i want to get about 6 gallons for my 8v92 experiment, i filled and ran xd-100 through her and its cleaned the more well, seems to run cleaner and a bit cooler as its a ful synthetic mono-grade oil but its not very cheap though. I love the stink of castor 927 castor 2T. There is no dirty waste oil to throw away now. i like the optimax engine would love to have it in my truck if i could make it fit., A crate engine 572 CID DFI 2 stroke v8 would be nice but they are not cheap and sold as racing only motors. Rotary trapping exhaust valves on the optimax would help though. The 3.2 stroke with turbo would be a sick motor for something like a mustang. Some folks have run the carbed 2.5 Vl mercs in chevy nova's at the salt flats,pretty inpressive. i got a 4l omc johnson 2 stroke small block side oiler v8 siting around i need parts to rebuild it.
@@jlo13800 I love 2 strokes too, opti's not so much. I prefer Etec (direct injection over port injection) and caster oil might be able to slip by emissions but mixed with diesel I would doubt it. From what I've read this opti uses as much fuel as a petrol opti so the only benifit is it's less explosive, down side is they can't sell it to the public because of emissions. BRP has a "project X" hopefully it is down this lines. I'd be happy with another 2 stroke but a diesel would be so much better

And it's a real 175 horse too, probably at about 1700 rpm, not like those gas motors that barely make their rating at 5500 rpm.
Chris Namelast that's impossible to have that HP at such lower rpm, unless the torque curve abruptly decreases after 1700rpm.
This kind of diesel can get to 5000 rpm range.
It's nothing like a real diesel engine.

Io think a real diesel outboard engine will be a better choice, at this point. Oxe offer now an engine with the BMW 6L Twin turbo, a very fine diesel engine...
But I think those engines will remain a choice for few applications...
