He wanted to know what was so good about it that would made Ging never be there. So ig technically kite is the reason why cuz he told him about Ging but not really.

Honestly, on my first watch I never questioned his bond with Kite. I thought it was because he was the closest source to Ging, and that he was so near to his goal as well as finally getting to know someone so close to his father that having him taken away pushed him all the way back to square one and that was enough to spark that anger inside him. Maybe I'm an idiot because it doesn't seem many other people thought this way, but this caused me not to feel confused or lost as to why he was so passionate for someone he barely knew and it just made sense to me
Jacob Harris I think if you care about Gon enough as a character it hits hard no matter what. he's a young, innocent, reckless child who just found the closest thing to his dad after 12 years of not having one, I don't blame him for the pent-up rage one bit
I figured a Hunter was just something we were supposed to figure out later in the series, and in the beginning, not even Gon knew what a hunter was, he just wanted to find his dad. That’s what I got from the first time I watched HxH.
That's because the 2011 version screwed up. The 1999 version started with Gon's childhood and Kite's introduction and him teaching Gon what hunters are before he goes to catch the king of the lake.
Which is another reason I recommend watching the 1999 version over the 2011 version. At least up until after the Hunter Exam arc. Starting with the Zoldyeck Family arc, the 2011 is the better version. But the 1999 has some REALLY good filler in the hunter exam. Stuff that fits PERFECTLY. It also arguably has far better music.
@@Xeno455 I find more interesting the 2011 version's take. Not actually knowing what a Hunter is or does and gradually finding out, is more interesting. They could've solved the Kite problem pretty easily though by showing him in the first episode and omitting the explanation of what a Hunter is.
When kite died I was confused af why gon felt so connected to him. Dude almost took his life for a dude who we only knew for a few episodes. It bothered me so much.
I just finished episode one of HxH 1999 and it was much better introduction than the 2011 version. We could see Kite in the first episode already and he was the one who told Gon that Ging is alive and that he is a Hunter and what is a Hunter. Kite was the reason Gon began his journey and everything. So that's why he was so angry

I can see this hapening, but since I watched the 90s version before watching the 2011, I felt so shocked and emotional seeing Kite's head on Pitou's lap. I was so angry at Pitou after that episode.
Idk, Gon in the anime had the reason “he missed out on raising me, so being a Hunter must be really amazing!” and that was enough to get me to believe in his drive. So to say he “caught fish and decided to leave” is inaccurate because he had the drive to find his father because of his curiosity and being born an ingrain natural hunter. I think that it was a smart decision to move past it. Also Gon would have totally went into that psycho because Kite was the first person he is close to that he has ever lost. Thats huge for any child. Especially one with insane natural talent.
I believe so too, Gon kept saying 'being a hunter must be so amazing for him to leave me as a kid', and that really pushed Gon and the viewers to watch. It's not entirely lacking tbh.

6:13 Yeah, that's probably what bothers me the most about the Kite situation. It's not just the fact that they skipped Kite being the first character and real reason behind Gon's motivation, but also how they totally downplayed their reunion. The fact that Gon couldn't even recognize Kite by sight and that he didn't even mention him before made it hard for me to believe that his attachment to him was that big and deep. It's a shame because Madhouse truly knew how to portray Gon's emotions during the CA arc. They could have made it 1000x more impactful had they followed the manga more closely.
I also think that people who simp really hard for hxh (like aleczandxr) add fuel to the fire. In one of his videos he says that it doesn't matter that Kite wasn't at the beggining arcs because you can see Gon getting more and more depressed. I have no idea how avoiding the root of the problem fixes it but ok. He's also overhyping and praising it way too much for very trivial reasons, I think this sort of makes you feel bad for thinking that it's not perfect and you start to pretend to like aspects you previously had mixed feeling about. In conclusion it is absolutely necessary to watch the first episode of 99 before moving onto 2011 version.
Sky I think it's sad that you have to call his clear love and appreciation of his favourite show "simping". Just because someone doesn't see the flaw in a certain plot point that you might see doesn't make them wrong or an idiot, people just have different perceptions and that's okay. My first watch of HxH I never questioned why Kite was so important to Gon, since the series had already explained to me that he was the closest source to finding Ging, that was all I really needed to know. it isn't hard to figure out whether you watched episode 1 of the 99 version or not

Sky I'm speaking in the sense of people perceive everything differently, whether that's art, a storyline, moral views, everyone's brains are wired to look at things and consume differently to others. HxH is one of those stories that have plenty of subtle hints, foreshadowing, development and plot direction that can be taken in and looked at in several different ways. For example, when people claim the Chimera Ant arc was drawn out or poorly written, I disagree because to me the development and plot-thickening was insane and had me hooked for the whole experience. Perception is varied and the sooner people start to accept that the less we will argue over the inevitable nature of opinions. It starts to become a problem, though, when people state their opinion as fact and that anyone who disagrees with it is stupid
and yes, I cried watching episode 131, 116, all of Gon's pure rage envoked emotions from me. I was witnessing our first-introduced character who was seemingly pure and kind becoming an opposing version of himself
For me, the death of Kite made an impact through Gon in the 2011 anime. It felt like he thought that he'd failed Kite for not being strong enough to help out properly. As if his death could have been prevented if he'd been stronger. That's why he denies it at first, because he doesn't want to face his failure. He's a naive kid after all, so that made sense to me. BUT knowing what I know now about Kite, this would have made it even more impactful
I couldn't really decide who my favorite character was until I got to Kite in the 2011 version. I had watched the 1999 version, but he didn't really make an impact on me there. But in the 2011 version, he became my favorite character and then died 15 minutes after I decided that he was my favorite character...
They should’ve really spent at least one episode expanding the relationship between Gon and Kite to make up for taking out the beginning part. Would’ve really made Kite’s death more memorable and Gon’s decent more understandable. Still one of the greatest arc’s in all of anime tho
The Shanks comparison was an excellent way to highlight what Kite could’ve been. If Shanks died in front of Luffy like Kite did in front of Gon, then Luffy might actually forsake his dream like he did after Marineford. But the way that I saw Gon going into that place of darkness was because he was powerless to stop a friends death. It stopped being an adventure after Kite died on Gon’s watch. With this context, however, it makes the Kite death so much more meaningful.
To actually integrate Kite later on they could have had them recognize each other and Killua could have asked "you know this guy?" And Gon could have launched into the story of how he met Kite and that he's the reason why Gon started this journey. But instead they made him ~mysterious~ and it was very annoying. I love Kite, but like you I didn't understand Gon's motivations until I read the manga.
Kayla J its a good thing in i watched the 1999 version, then read the manga. i have a better understanding of who kite was and his relationship with gon and to his whole adventure
I liked the idea of maybe Gon Explaining to Killua why he is so driven to become a hunter during satotz's endurance run part, plenty of time to talk and walk. You could even have had a short more ambiguous intro for episode 1 where a shadowy figure is shown saving little Gon, and he does his little info dump on hunters(which informs the audience as much as Gon) and then he leaves the license saying, if you become a hunter, you find your father, I've been hunting him for years. I hope we meet again Gon. No more than 2 minutes, and the real encounter can be more fully expanded when he and Killua finally meet Kite. Seems easy enough to me. I also got a little confused about how quickly the pace with Kite went, but I chalked it up to how loyal Kite was to Ging and that Gon had respect and love for this man who was on another level as a Hunter and had a connection to Gon's past, and Ging, and that by looking for Ging, both were united and bonded by the goal.
Having not read the manga or watched the old anime, definitely blew my mind. I will say the reason the first impression of Kite is mysterious/hostile in the anime is because they appear right next a Chimera nest. He practically saves their lives just like he had when Gon is a kid. This realization is what is supposed to show how significant Kite is. BUT after watching this I also believe removing him from the first episode was a mistake. Though a rare one in the case of this show.
@Vegito Black That's exactly why it is the same. Yes, at the start of the series Luffy knows about Sabo, just like Gon knows about Kite. Sabo has the exact issues as Kite has in the HxH 2011... both are characters of paramount importance wedged into the story late. We don't have to imagine how Shanks would be diminished by such a thing, we just need to look at Sabo. He stinks of cheesy retcon.
Luffy might have thought Sabo dead, but that doesn't mean he isn't an inspiration to both him and Ace. Dead mentors are even better for that than live ones. So it's inspiration with Inspiration. But you're thinking on the wrong level. This has nothing with what the characters would do or say in story. This is meta-level... what the author and directors decided. Gon doesn't have to say "oh btw i met a Hunter that knew my father years ago" because we have two examples of it being simply shown up front, so it's clear it doesn't need to be told (and those do it right at the top of the first act, where these important hooks really belong). So Luffy doesn't have to say anything, because there's a million other ways for a creator to get that information in. With Sabo, though, his introduction is indistinguishable from an ass pull. Sabo needed to be introduced well before Ace died to avoid that... because doing this anywhere close makes it look even more like Oda's just pulling a switcheroo. And as I say above, Ace has the same problem... Alabasta might be well before his big scene, but it's still too late. Both these characters should have been somewhere in the first act to do them justice.
Wow. Thank you for this. I’ve always been baffled about the unexpected importance of kite and the impact his death had on the series. That’s one of the reasons this series didn’t become one of my favorites. Thanks for the clarification. I probably will give the manga a read now

Perhaps... Personally I didn't think that the pacing at the beginning of Hunter x Hunter 2011 was too negatively impacted by Kite's removal. A chunk of the story was missing, yes, but the rest of the beginning didn't feel nearly as rushed. The gripe I hold with FMA:B Episode one is that it spoils the mid-series twist by introducing large-scale geographic alchemy into Central City, where in the manga the reveal of an alchemy circle overlaying the country hits differently due to the personal scale in which all alchemy had operated on up to that point. I fully expect my thoughts on Kite to be much more contentious, however. As I see it Kite in chapter 1 is a smoking Chekhov's gun showing Togashi's intent to tie Gon's personal progress as a Hunter to Kite as a measuring stick. Removing Kite removes the expectation for the audience that Kite exists at all and that Gon will meet him again, which I perceive as a trade-off to strengthen the illusion that Gon lacks protagonist plot armour in the close battles and frequent losses the he faces. At least in Hunter x Hunter, I find perceivable benefit to the creative trade-off that it makes, even though it cannot be to everyone's taste. FMA:B fares much worse in my eyes. Although you may not be surprised to know that I read FMA's manga first, where Hunter x Hunter's 2011 anime adaptation was my introduction to that series. If you feel like that invalidates my feelings as some self-justification for my enjoyment of those series and of how I first consumed them such as I did, then you are free to do so.
hunter x hunter's first episode was definitely better, with the main characters being gon, leorio, and kurapika (maybe mito a bit), and it started the series off moving much faster. If they had later included kite in a flashback (maybe during the hunter exam when he was upset after getting hisoka's tag, when talking to his mom about ging, or in the episode where him and killua are talking to each other on whale island)
ok facts fma had stories where u actually see & go more in depth between the relationships of al and ed, how much they want to get their bodies back and what they would do for the other- without the distraction of love interests. like i remember there were more “filler” eps in the beginning of fma, where there was 2 brothers posing as ed and al & they mirrored their own relationship and like the relationship between alphonse heidrich & ed which shows ed’s love for al extends past the universe they were in & that he was willing to sacrifice both his alchemy, his entire existence and his future in that universe for the gamble of possibly getting his brothers body back and its so ironic how fmab has “brotherhood” in the title cus i swear original fma focused more on the brothers than fmab did
I'm an anime only fan, and felt the same when Kite was introduced and died. Like cool, he's was a badass heroic figure, but the show doesn't lack for them. The manga introduction as a "call to action" makes so much more sense plot wise.
The first time I watched HXH 2011, I didn't really feel the connection between Gon and Kite tbh. I was disappointed that Gon gave up his ability to use Nen for someone like Kite (I imagined it would be for someone close like Killua/Kurapika/Leorio). Kite barely had any screen time and got introduced so late into the story. It makes sense now why Gon lost it if we're going off of the 1999 anime and the manga. Madhouse dropped the ball with Kite by not mentioning him in the first episode

That's something I noticed with the remakes of some shows. Hellsing Ultimate pulled something similar and I honestly hate that. It's like the creators believe they're justified in omitting important details because it existed in the previous iteration of a show. It's annoying.
For My luck, I went to reddit to see which was the best hunter x hunter to watch it first, and some nice random guy said that the best option is to watch only the 1st episode of the 1999 HxH and then you begin the 2011 HxH, that really helped me a lot!

I finished HxH (2011) today, and I think my biggest confusion with the Chimera Ant arc was why they allowed Gon to just sit in an empty room for about 20 episodes. With this context I understand his sentiment much better. That problem was a bit downplayed for me though, since the Chimera Ant arc has so many POV characters that at times I found myself forgetting that Gon was even a player to begin with.
honestly, full prequel spinoffs of kurapika, kite, and hisoka would be amazing, but that's asking for a lot ooooor other authors doing the work, but considering sui ishida really knocked it out of the park with hisoka's backstory i really think he'd be a great mangaka to have for if that ever gets fully fleshed out

I do think that overall the 2011 version is better, but the 1999 version captures the dark tone of HxH way better. Similar to how they cut out Kite, they also cut out most of Leorio's backstory. In the 2011 version, they show him as nothing more than a funny comic relief character. But in the manga (and in the 1999 version), Leorio's troubled past is shown in greater detail. In the 1999 version they show Leorio's hallucinations which showcase his dark past, and they really drive home the point that he's not just some funny comic relief character, they really make us feel for him and grow more attached to him. But in the 2011 version, they completely cut this out.
Oh I knew Kite was introduced early but I had no idea it had this impact. Gon's reaction makes a whole lot more sense now. That guy was a rock in Gon's life.
Amazing how this world works. I just finished the 2011 adaptation yesterday and shared the same confusion over why Gon went absolutely berserk over Kite’s death. And today, this video shows up in my feed. Thanks for the explanation. However, I’m now a little upset knowing what the series could have been if they just followed the manga a little more closely. Thankfully I read the manga first because I had slow internet at the time and only fast enough to load up the manga. Them once I found out there was am anime I never did understand why they didnt have that at the beginning because that's what pushed me into reading it. When kite told him about pain of losing someone like that bear thing lost his mother being killed by kite. Really hit hard in those few pages and changed gon after that.
Many get this wrong, so i thought i spread the good News: You dont need Manipulation ot make Conjured Things 'do Stuff'. Cause things have 'natural attributes' and such. A Vacuum Cleaner is doing the Vacuum Cleaner Sound (you know the one) without your Control, ya know? Means: You can conjure a Tree that drops a certain Fruit once a Week. But you dont control anything; you just controlled that this is the Hatsu you wanted; you made the Nen-Ability. Controlling the Tree or its Properties needs Manipulation. But the Tree growing Trees is not your Control.
I’m so glad you made this video. I felt the exact same as you when watching the 2011 anime, I didn’t understand why Gon was so attached to Kite when he really only knew him for a few episodes. His death wasn’t that impactful to me and Gons rage didn’t seem logical. It didn’t sit well with me at all and I’ve been confused about it ever since. Now knowing about this first manga chapter everything makes sense now and I’m actually really frustrated that he was taken out. If the first manga chapter had been the first episode then I think the Chimera ant arch would have been 10 times better and made much more sense (I loved it anyways don’t get me wrong). Thanks for clearing this up.
Just started rewatching HxH with my friend who hasn't watched it before. I showed him the 1999 clip of Kite to hopefully make the future events more impactful than it was for me, hopefully it works!
@Lionard Kirsch hahahaha about that... he didn't like Gon's transformation full stop, I've never seen someone so against it 😅 I think even with the Kite stuff though, being convinced of their connection is tough when Gon doesn't mention him at all in the 2011 version. So while you can be told how important he is, without really feeling it through the series like you would in the manga, there's still that barrier and it's much harder to genuinely buy into
Although this is still my favorite anime, the sudden attachment Gon created was a huge problem for me. Never knew the source material actually had done this correctly. Wow. HxH could have been even more beautiful :(
Very good point, I had the same problem of not really "getting it" about Gon's obsession with Kite in the Chimera Ant art and becoming a bit annoyed and detached from him.
this is why i still prefer the 90's anime. not only it includes kite as the main motivation of gon, just the whole darker tone of the anime makes it a lot more menacing story, the slower somber music, darker color palette, and the slower more intense pacing makes the 90 HxH just sooo goooodd.. it's a shame that it ends after the york new city arc..
I absolutely get your point. When I was recommended to watch HxH I first search for a version with Latin American dub (I'm Latino) and the 1999 was the only one, so I saw all that anime until the end of the greed island arc, when they meet Kite and then continued with the 2011 one. This let me see the importance of the character, but I still think Gon's reaction to Kite's death was mostly due to his personality and not his relation with Kite. It makes more sense that way, but is still a ver Gon like thing to do.
Despite the lack of Kite screentime, he was still my favorite character and I didn't question the lack of screen time he got initially and Gon's reaction to it and didn't lesson my approval of the season as it was still my favorite. Then I find out about the manga and I grew so pissed about it because I could have gotten more of him. It's why I want to read the manga now because I get more of him. I knew the original 1999 version had Kite in it and later found out it only went to the greed island arc and not the chimera ant arc, i don't know how i didn't notice that. I plan on getting the manga soon though for Christmas or around it, and maybe I have low hope that they'll remake it again as it'd be a third time but it'd be nice to dream.

I started watching hunter x hunter late last year, and I started with the 2011 version since it was more well known at that time, so I saw nothing wrong with it. I didn’t know there was OVAS, or Movies, or even a 1999 version. All I knew was they had a manga and the 2011 anime. I remember watching it, and immediately when Kite was shown I felt some kind of thing between him and Gon. Yes it was more confusing since gon didn’t remember him from childhood, and at the time I knew nothing about what Really happened, But watching gon be just so attached to Kite like he was actually his father dug deep into my heart, there was obviously a blank spot for something missing there, but I could tell the 2011 version really did try and express their feelings. Now it makes so much more sense , and I appreciate it greatly. I’ve watched the 1999 version as well along with the two movies. I have yet to watch the OVAS but I am starting to read the manga. But I’m the 1999 version, i believe from now that it could’ve been portrayed much better then the 2011 version with Kite and Gon, if they made more episodes.. I’m a little disappointed they didn’t, but I understand rightfully so, As with this, Kite will always be my favorite Character from the series, even if he didn’t get much screen time. Now I know, and felt, perhaps he was a bigger person then showed. It makes me really happy that he’s getting recognition, I look forward to watching more content from you! ❤
This makes so much more sense! I always wondered why gon reacted so strongly to kites death, even going so far as to push killua and his other friends away[because in the 2011 anime it looked like gon only had a slightly stronger connection,seeing that he had encountered him once before] .but I agree that it was an unnecessary and even detrimental change to the story. The motivation seemed unnatural and even selfish, putting himself in danger and plunging himself into such darkness , anger and revenge for the sake of a man who he could not even recognize in the at first glance (thus not seeming that important or impactful in his life).
Hey man, if youre trying to expand your HxH content. I have an idea for you. You could pit nen abilities against their shonen counterparts to see which one stacks up better or which one would win in a fight. Im thinkin along the lines of luffy gum gum fruit vs hisokas bungie gum. Or shalnok vs lelouche from code geass. Something like that. It would be interesting to see the analysis of two similar yet different abilities going against one another. SECONDLY You could grab abilities from other shonen and see what nen categories they would fall into and whether or not they would need/ currently have any restrictions. For example Luffy gear 2nd ability shortened his life at the beginning of his use. That could be a condition of the ability like emperor time. Also he could be an enhancer. Etc... you get the jist.
To add to that. You can take other anime abilities and see how they would translate to nen. Like would Luffy stretching himself be enhancement or manipulation or a combination etc
I was mind blown once i read the manga. I didn’t think much of Kite because like you I only started with 2011. Someone told me why Kite was so important and Gon’s downwards spiral make so much more sense.

You might not like it but you really need to check yourself on this, Even if you hate the ever living shit out of the series it would still be one of the most important (if not the most important) anime for most of the shonen genre readers.

Thank you for doing this video. The first time I watched Hunter x Hunter, I was legitimately confused with the Gon and Kite stuff. I remembered liking Kite fine, but seeing Gon get so angry felt unearned, at least in the anime. Like Kite had only been there for like 10 episodes, yet Gon was ready to give up his life to avenge him. The fight with Pitou was still visually amazing, but I don’t think it hit the same emotional beat that it was supposed to.
I just want to say that I’ve heard a lot of people talk on youtube, in fact I’ve been one (not a very good one, but it was fun😅) and that’s why I wanna say that you speak very, very well. Your videos are entertaining, don’t get too bogged down in practicality even while factoring it in (after all, anime isn’t reality and it gets wiggle room there), aren’t too dialogue heavy, are visually appealing, bring something new to chew on, and I have been watching your videos in a binge-esque fashion due to the overall experience they provide. I think your nen user evaluation videos were pretty damn plausible, especially where Gon and Killua ended up in the rankings, and you made the most out of what the show gave ya to evaluate some great and lacking characters. This Kite video in particular really gave me a lot to think about in terms of the 2011 anime potential, because I am a watcher and reader of HxH and the opening with (and without) Kite never really stood out until you brought it up. I don’t subscribe much, but here we are. And now excuse me while I consume the rest of the entertainment you’ve uploaded for the general public. I don’t know how almost every manga writer is an absolute genius in story telling like they got the art talent and the writing talent like it’s amazing ong
I think a good place to fit the Kite episode would have been when Gon was knocked unconscious at the end of the exam arc. We would learn why he’d gone through all this trouble and pain, and then the next episode he wakes and finds out he made it to his goal, he got his license. The only problem with this placement might be that the episode he wakes up in is also sort of a flashback, with Satotz telling Gon about what happened to Killua, but I wouldn’t have minded. It would’ve allowed the show to jump right into the action, and then given the story a moment of important reflection within the same arc, and at a moment when it seemed natural for Gon to be remembering why he was going through this.
I'm rewatching and noticed that Kite is the central silhouette into the introduction to the world at the start of the very first episode, when it says "...as Hunters!"
I honestly think that they don't tell you anything in the beginning, to me it leaves this since of mystery and ambiguity which blends well with Gons childish optimism. It feels like your going on a journey with these people learning about a world they even they themselves know little about. I was also confused by his connection to Kite and the breakdown that Gon had, but I understood it as he just lost the one link that he has to Ging. Kite was the closest hes ever got to meeting Ging and it as taken from him. Not only was that taken, the closest thing his father had to a friend was taken,
The Kite return in the Manga weekly was took months because of breaks in the weekly release. He was more playful with Gon and not as harsh in the anime. The fight where Kite dies was took a month or so. Kite's loss of his arm saving Gon and Killua was far more significant in Kite's death. Reading the manga as it was released increased the anticipation of events. The Chimera arch was far more emotional all around. The story of the blind Go champion was fat more depth too. The chiameras butchery of the humans were far more tragic. I think the Show runner intionaly toned down emotional aspects of that series.
I binged the entire chimera ant arc in like three days just because I was desperate to see kite come back (I was certain he would be okay since we didn’t get to see enough of him)... I was absolutely devastated like straight up ugly crying when Pitou says he’s gone. AFTER ALL OF THAT HOPE !!! RIP my heart
I watched the 1999 version first so I knew who Kite was. I agree with what you said in this video Kite was like a big brother figure to Gon and really set a standard for what a hunter should be. Seeing him again was like going through all the trials of the previous arc and getting to show someone you looked up to how far you’ve come. I really wish more people had just watched that first episode of the 1999 version so they would have had that emotional connection during the war with the ants.
Yeah smh, it would have made a ton more sense if they integrated the kite and gon story in the first episode of the show. Also fixed their meeting after greed island. Everything would be perfect.
i finished watching the chimera ant arc 3 days ago and i felt the exact same way, i was really confused as to why Gon was so out of character (in a sense) when seeking revenge for a character he only briefly knew, to the point of hurting Killua. It makes so much more sense now!
When I started watching hunter x hunter for the first time, I really didn’t understand what a hunter was and I didn’t really think much of Ging. I thought as I go in the show I would figure out what it means to be a hunter.

I felt the same when I first watched the 2011 anime. I didn’t understand why Gon felt so attached to kite, who in my eyes, I didn’t even treat as an important character until the show started treating like that later on. I had another friend who started with the 1999 version and he told me what happened. I was very shocked to hear how the first episode went but it made a lot more sense to me. I wish hunter x hunter would’ve added an episode, if not in the first, then maybe during the hunter exams where we see flashbacks of Gon’s time with Kite
I like how you made the comparison between Kite and Shanks, because it's the first thing that popped on my mind when you were talking about how Kite appeared in the first chapter of the manga but not in the anime, and they both had the same impact on the protagonist of their respective series
Your mention of the parallels between Gon and Kite to Luffy and Shanks also serves as an example of how they SHOULD have done the Kite flashback. In the One Piece manga, the Shanks flashback was in chapter 1, but in the anime it was episode 4. This allowed for them to jump into the action but still have the flashback early enough for it to mean something. They could've had the flashback at some point during the Hunter exam and it would've been perfect.
I believe the 2011 version cut out Kite's presentation, because they thought it wouldn't be important and it was completely the opposite, by the time they realized it was too late. I agree with the statement that it was a mistake, but I don't agree with two things: 1- Gon's motivation to look for his father. It's true that the explanation of what the heck a hunter is in this world, Gon has literally a whole scene talking to Mito about why he wants to look for Ging. The removing of that scene didn't change or unclear Gon's motivation too much. 2-Gon going into darkness for Kite's death. It's true that it hasn't the same value as if the first scene of the manga with Kite would've happened, but Gon's rage is understandable, since Kite was literally the representation of all the efforts Gon did to find his father, everything lead to the moment where he meet Kite, when Kite died Gon not only lost someone he respected he lost everything he accomplished up til that point.

Being someone who has never read the manga but having watched plenty of NewWorldReview, I felt like Kite's absence at the start of the series was easy enough to be handled by my suspension of disbelief. After watching the second half of the video, however, I have realized how much a difference it makes to Gon's eventual fall into grief and the repercussions it has into the story as a whole. This was an absolutely excellent take on the variance between the manga and the 2011 anime adaptation. I want to thank you for your exceptional analysis of this series as it has not only been entertaining but has also brought a new life into this series that I never would have thought to explore otherwise!

Honestly, on my first watch I never questioned his bond with Kite. I thought it was because he was the closest source to Ging, and that he was so near to his goal as well as finally getting to know someone so close to his father that having him taken away pushed him all the way back to square one and that was enough to spark that anger inside him. Maybe I'm an idiot because it doesn't seem many other people thought this way, but this caused me not to feel confused or lost as to why he was so passionate for someone he barely knew and it just made sense to me

I figured a Hunter was just something we were supposed to figure out later in the series, and in the beginning, not even Gon knew what a hunter was, he just wanted to find his dad. That’s what I got from the first time I watched HxH.
That's because the 2011 version screwed up. The 1999 version started with Gon's childhood and Kite's introduction and him teaching Gon what hunters are before he goes to catch the king of the lake.
Which is another reason I recommend watching the 1999 version over the 2011 version. At least up until after the Hunter Exam arc. Starting with the Zoldyeck Family arc, the 2011 is the better version. But the 1999 has some REALLY good filler in the hunter exam. Stuff that fits PERFECTLY. It also arguably has far better music.

I just finished episode one of HxH 1999 and it was much better introduction than the 2011 version. We could see Kite in the first episode already and he was the one who told Gon that Ging is alive and that he is a Hunter and what is a Hunter. Kite was the reason Gon began his journey and everything. So that's why he was so angry

Idk, Gon in the anime had the reason “he missed out on raising me, so being a Hunter must be really amazing!” and that was enough to get me to believe in his drive. So to say he “caught fish and decided to leave” is inaccurate because he had the drive to find his father because of his curiosity and being born an ingrain natural hunter. I think that it was a smart decision to move past it. Also Gon would have totally went into that psycho because Kite was the first person he is close to that he has ever lost. Thats huge for any child. Especially one with insane natural talent.
I believe so too, Gon kept saying 'being a hunter must be so amazing for him to leave me as a kid', and that really pushed Gon and the viewers to watch. It's not entirely lacking tbh.

6:13 Yeah, that's probably what bothers me the most about the Kite situation. It's not just the fact that they skipped Kite being the first character and real reason behind Gon's motivation, but also how they totally downplayed their reunion. The fact that Gon couldn't even recognize Kite by sight and that he didn't even mention him before made it hard for me to believe that his attachment to him was that big and deep.
It's a shame because Madhouse truly knew how to portray Gon's emotions during the CA arc. They could have made it 1000x more impactful had they followed the manga more closely.
I also think that people who simp really hard for hxh (like aleczandxr) add fuel to the fire. In one of his videos he says that it doesn't matter that Kite wasn't at the beggining arcs because you can see Gon getting more and more depressed. I have no idea how avoiding the root of the problem fixes it but ok. He's also overhyping and praising it way too much for very trivial reasons, I think this sort of makes you feel bad for thinking that it's not perfect and you start to pretend to like aspects you previously had mixed feeling about. In conclusion it is absolutely necessary to watch the first episode of 99 before moving onto 2011 version.

Sky I'm speaking in the sense of people perceive everything differently, whether that's art, a storyline, moral views, everyone's brains are wired to look at things and consume differently to others. HxH is one of those stories that have plenty of subtle hints, foreshadowing, development and plot direction that can be taken in and looked at in several different ways.
For example, when people claim the Chimera Ant arc was drawn out or poorly written, I disagree because to me the development and plot-thickening was insane and had me hooked for the whole experience. Perception is varied and the sooner people start to accept that the less we will argue over the inevitable nature of opinions. It starts to become a problem, though, when people state their opinion as fact and that anyone who disagrees with it is stupid
and yes, I cried watching episode 131, 116, all of Gon's pure rage envoked emotions from me. I was witnessing our first-introduced character who was seemingly pure and kind becoming an opposing version of himself
For me, the death of Kite made an impact through Gon in the 2011 anime. It felt like he thought that he'd failed Kite for not being strong enough to help out properly. As if his death could have been prevented if he'd been stronger. That's why he denies it at first, because he doesn't want to face his failure. He's a naive kid after all, so that made sense to me. BUT knowing what I know now about Kite, this would have made it even more impactful

They should’ve really spent at least one episode expanding the relationship between Gon and Kite to make up for taking out the beginning part. Would’ve really made Kite’s death more memorable and Gon’s decent more understandable. Still one of the greatest arc’s in all of anime tho

The Shanks comparison was an excellent way to highlight what Kite could’ve been. If Shanks died in front of Luffy like Kite did in front of Gon, then Luffy might actually forsake his dream like he did after Marineford. But the way that I saw Gon going into that place of darkness was because he was powerless to stop a friends death. It stopped being an adventure after Kite died on Gon’s watch. With this context, however, it makes the Kite death so much more meaningful.
To actually integrate Kite later on they could have had them recognize each other and Killua could have asked "you know this guy?" And Gon could have launched into the story of how he met Kite and that he's the reason why Gon started this journey. But instead they made him ~mysterious~ and it was very annoying. I love Kite, but like you I didn't understand Gon's motivations until I read the manga.

I liked the idea of maybe Gon Explaining to Killua why he is so driven to become a hunter during satotz's endurance run part, plenty of time to talk and walk. You could even have had a short more ambiguous intro for episode 1 where a shadowy figure is shown saving little Gon, and he does his little info dump on hunters(which informs the audience as much as Gon) and then he leaves the license saying, if you become a hunter, you find your father, I've been hunting him for years. I hope we meet again Gon. No more than 2 minutes, and the real encounter can be more fully expanded when he and Killua finally meet Kite. Seems easy enough to me. I also got a little confused about how quickly the pace with Kite went, but I chalked it up to how loyal Kite was to Ging and that Gon had respect and love for this man who was on another level as a Hunter and had a connection to Gon's past, and Ging, and that by looking for Ging, both were united and bonded by the goal.
Having not read the manga or watched the old anime, definitely blew my mind. I will say the reason the first impression of Kite is mysterious/hostile in the anime is because they appear right next a Chimera nest. He practically saves their lives just like he had when Gon is a kid. This realization is what is supposed to show how significant Kite is. BUT after watching this I also believe removing him from the first episode was a mistake. Though a rare one in the case of this show.

@Vegito Black That's exactly why it is the same. Yes, at the start of the series Luffy knows about Sabo, just like Gon knows about Kite. Sabo has the exact issues as Kite has in the HxH 2011... both are characters of paramount importance wedged into the story late. We don't have to imagine how Shanks would be diminished by such a thing, we just need to look at Sabo. He stinks of cheesy retcon.
Luffy might have thought Sabo dead, but that doesn't mean he isn't an inspiration to both him and Ace. Dead mentors are even better for that than live ones. So it's inspiration with Inspiration.
But you're thinking on the wrong level. This has nothing with what the characters would do or say in story. This is meta-level... what the author and directors decided. Gon doesn't have to say "oh btw i met a Hunter that knew my father years ago" because we have two examples of it being simply shown up front, so it's clear it doesn't need to be told (and those do it right at the top of the first act, where these important hooks really belong). So Luffy doesn't have to say anything, because there's a million other ways for a creator to get that information in. With Sabo, though, his introduction is indistinguishable from an ass pull. Sabo needed to be introduced well before Ace died to avoid that... because doing this anywhere close makes it look even more like Oda's just pulling a switcheroo. And as I say above, Ace has the same problem... Alabasta might be well before his big scene, but it's still too late. Both these characters should have been somewhere in the first act to do them justice.

Personally I didn't think that the pacing at the beginning of Hunter x Hunter 2011 was too negatively impacted by Kite's removal. A chunk of the story was missing, yes, but the rest of the beginning didn't feel nearly as rushed.
The gripe I hold with FMA:B Episode one is that it spoils the mid-series twist by introducing large-scale geographic alchemy into Central City, where in the manga the reveal of an alchemy circle overlaying the country hits differently due to the personal scale in which all alchemy had operated on up to that point.
I fully expect my thoughts on Kite to be much more contentious, however. As I see it Kite in chapter 1 is a smoking Chekhov's gun showing Togashi's intent to tie Gon's personal progress as a Hunter to Kite as a measuring stick. Removing Kite removes the expectation for the audience that Kite exists at all and that Gon will meet him again, which I perceive as a trade-off to strengthen the illusion that Gon lacks protagonist plot armour in the close battles and frequent losses the he faces.
At least in Hunter x Hunter, I find perceivable benefit to the creative trade-off that it makes, even though it cannot be to everyone's taste. FMA:B fares much worse in my eyes.
Although you may not be surprised to know that I read FMA's manga first, where Hunter x Hunter's 2011 anime adaptation was my introduction to that series. If you feel like that invalidates my feelings as some self-justification for my enjoyment of those series and of how I first consumed them such as I did, then you are free to do so.

hunter x hunter's first episode was definitely better, with the main characters being gon, leorio, and kurapika (maybe mito a bit), and it started the series off moving much faster. If they had later included kite in a flashback (maybe during the hunter exam when he was upset after getting hisoka's tag, when talking to his mom about ging, or in the episode where him and killua are talking to each other on whale island)
ok facts fma had stories where u actually see & go more in depth between the relationships of al and ed, how much they want to get their bodies back and what they would do for the other- without the distraction of love interests.

I'm an anime only fan, and felt the same when Kite was introduced and died. Like cool, he's was a badass heroic figure, but the show doesn't lack for them. The manga introduction as a "call to action" makes so much more sense plot wise.
The first time I watched HXH 2011, I didn't really feel the connection between Gon and Kite tbh. I was disappointed that Gon gave up his ability to use Nen for someone like Kite (I imagined it would be for someone close like Killua/Kurapika/Leorio). Kite barely had any screen time and got introduced so late into the story. It makes sense now why Gon lost it if we're going off of the 1999 anime and the manga. Madhouse dropped the ball with Kite by not mentioning him in the first episode

That's something I noticed with the remakes of some shows. Hellsing Ultimate pulled something similar and I honestly hate that. It's like the creators believe they're justified in omitting important details because it existed in the previous iteration of a show. It's annoying.

For My luck, I went to reddit to see which was the best hunter x hunter to watch it first, and some nice random guy said that the best option is to watch only the 1st episode of the 1999 HxH and then you begin the 2011 HxH, that really helped me a lot!

I finished HxH (2011) today, and I think my biggest confusion with the Chimera Ant arc was why they allowed Gon to just sit in an empty room for about 20 episodes. With this context I understand his sentiment much better. That problem was a bit downplayed for me though, since the Chimera Ant arc has so many POV characters that at times I found myself forgetting that Gon was even a player to begin with.

I do think that overall the 2011 version is better, but the 1999 version captures the dark tone of HxH way better. Similar to how they cut out Kite, they also cut out most of Leorio's backstory. In the 2011 version, they show him as nothing more than a funny comic relief character. But in the manga (and in the 1999 version), Leorio's troubled past is shown in greater detail. In the 1999 version they show Leorio's hallucinations which showcase his dark past, and they really drive home the point that he's not just some funny comic relief character, they really make us feel for him and grow more attached to him. But in the 2011 version, they completely cut this out.
I did always feel like it didn’t make sense how much Gon cared about Kite. This makes Gons whole motivation make so much more sense

Thankfully I read the manga first because I had slow internet at the time and only fast enough to load up the manga. Them once I found out there was am anime I never did understand why they didnt have that at the beginning because that's what pushed me into
reading it. When kite told him about pain of losing someone like that bear thing lost his mother being killed by kite. Really hit hard in those few pages and changed gon after that.

I’m so glad you made this video. I felt the exact same as you when watching the 2011 anime, I didn’t understand why Gon was so attached to Kite when he really only knew him for a few episodes. His death wasn’t that impactful to me and Gons rage didn’t seem logical. It didn’t sit well with me at all and I’ve been confused about it ever since. Now knowing about this first manga chapter everything makes sense now and I’m actually really frustrated that he was taken out. If the first manga chapter had been the first episode then I think the Chimera ant arch would have been 10 times better and made much more sense (I loved it anyways don’t get me wrong). @Lionard Kirsch hahahaha about that... he didn't like Gon's transformation full stop, I've never seen someone so against it 😅 I think even with the Kite stuff though, being convinced of their connection is tough when Gon doesn't mention him at all in the 2011 version. So while you can be told how important he is, without really feeling it through the series like you would in the manga, there's still that barrier and it's much harder to genuinely buy into
Although this is still my favorite anime, the sudden attachment Gon created was a huge problem for me. Never knew the source material actually had done this correctly.

Very good point, I had the same problem of not really "getting it" about Gon's obsession with Kite in the Chimera Ant art and becoming a bit annoyed and detached from him.
this is why i still prefer the 90's anime.
not only it includes kite as the main motivation of gon, just the whole darker tone of the anime makes it a lot more menacing story, the slower somber music, darker color palette, and the slower more intense pacing makes the 90 HxH just sooo goooodd.. it's a shame that it ends after the york new city arc..

I absolutely get your point. When I was recommended to watch HxH I first search for a version with Latin American dub (I'm Latino) and the 1999 was the only one, so I saw all that anime until the end of the greed island arc, when they meet Kite and then continued with the 2011 one. This let me see the importance of the character, but I still think Gon's reaction to Kite's death was mostly due to his personality and not his relation with Kite. It makes more sense that way, but is still a ver Gon like thing to do.

Despite the lack of Kite screentime, he was still my favorite character and I didn't question the lack of screen time he got initially and Gon's reaction to it and didn't lesson my approval of the season as it was still my favorite. Then I find out about the manga and I grew so pissed about it because I could have gotten more of him. It's why I want to read the manga now because I get more of him. I knew the original 1999 version had Kite in it and later found out it only went to the greed island arc and not the chimera ant arc, i don't know how i didn't notice that. I plan on getting the manga soon though for Christmas or around it, and maybe I have low hope that they'll remake it again as it'd be a third time but it'd be nice to dream.

I started watching hunter x hunter late last year, and I started with the 2011 version since it was more well known at that time, so I saw nothing wrong with it. I didn’t know there was OVAS, or Movies, or even a 1999 version. All I knew was they had a manga and the 2011 anime. I remember watching it, and immediately when Kite was shown I felt some kind of thing between him and Gon. Yes it was more confusing since gon didn’t remember him from childhood, and at the time I knew nothing about what Really happened, But watching gon be just so attached to Kite like he was actually his father dug deep into my heart, there was obviously a blank spot for something missing there, but I could tell the 2011 version really did try and express their feelings. Now it makes so much more sense , and I appreciate it greatly. I’ve watched the 1999 version as well along with the two movies. I have yet to watch the OVAS but I am starting to read the manga. But I’m the 1999 version, i believe from now that it could’ve been portrayed much better then the 2011 version with Kite and Gon, if they made more episodes.. I’m a little disappointed they didn’t, but I understand rightfully so, As with this, Kite will always be my favorite Character from the series, even if he didn’t get much screen time. Now I know, and felt, perhaps he was a bigger person then showed. It makes me really happy that he’s getting recognition, I look forward to watching more content from you! ❤

This makes so much more sense! I always wondered why gon reacted so strongly to kites death, even going so far as to push killua and his other friends away[because in the 2011 anime it looked like gon only had a slightly stronger connection,seeing that he had encountered him once before] .but I agree that it was an unnecessary and even detrimental change to the story. The motivation seemed unnatural and even selfish, putting himself in danger and plunging himself into such darkness , anger and revenge for the sake of a man who he could not even recognize in the at first glance (thus not seeming that important or impactful in his life).
Hey man, if youre trying to expand your HxH content. I have an idea for you.
You could pit nen abilities against their shonen counterparts to see which one stacks up better or which one would win in a fight.
Im thinkin along the lines of luffy gum gum fruit vs hisokas bungie gum.
Or shalnok vs lelouche from code geass. Something like that. It would be interesting to see the analysis of two similar yet different abilities going against one another.
SECONDLY
You could grab abilities from other shonen and see what nen categories they would fall into and whether or not they would need/ currently have any restrictions. For example
Luffy gear 2nd ability shortened his life at the beginning of his use. That could be a condition of the ability like emperor time. Also he could be an enhancer. Etc... you get the jist.
To add to that. You can take other anime abilities and see how they would translate to nen. Like would Luffy stretching himself be enhancement or manipulation or a combination etc

Thank you for doing this video. The first time I watched Hunter x Hunter, I was legitimately confused with the Gon and Kite stuff. I remembered liking Kite fine, but seeing Gon get so angry felt unearned, at least in the anime. Like Kite had only been there for like 10 episodes, yet Gon was ready to give up his life to avenge him. The fight with Pitou was still visually amazing, but I don’t think it hit the same emotional beat that it was supposed to.
I just want to say that I’ve heard a lot of people talk on youtube, in fact I’ve been one (not a very good one, but it was fun😅) and that’s why I wanna say that you speak very, very well. Your videos are entertaining, don’t get too bogged down in practicality even while factoring it in (after all, anime isn’t reality and it gets wiggle room there), aren’t too dialogue heavy, are visually appealing, bring something new to chew on, and I have been watching your videos in a binge-esque fashion due to the overall experience they provide. I think your nen user evaluation videos were pretty damn plausible, especially where Gon and Killua ended up in the rankings, and you made the most out of what the show gave ya to evaluate some great and lacking characters. This Kite video in particular really gave me a lot to think about in terms of the 2011 anime potential, because I am a watcher and reader of HxH and the opening with (and without) Kite never really stood out until you brought it up. I don’t subscribe much, but here we are. And now excuse me while I consume the rest of the entertainment you’ve uploaded for the general public. Could be retconned with a good OVA adaptation in preparation of the anime's return, only God knows when.
It wouldn't be a retcon since its from the source material.
I think a good place to fit the Kite episode would have been when Gon was knocked unconscious at the end of the exam arc. We would learn why he’d gone through all this trouble and pain, and then the next episode he wakes and finds out he made it to his goal, he got his license. The only problem with this placement might be that the episode he wakes up in is also sort of a flashback, with Satotz telling Gon about what happened to Killua, but I wouldn’t have minded. It would’ve allowed the show to jump right into the action, and then given the story a moment of important reflection within the same arc, and at a moment when it seemed natural for Gon to be remembering why he was going through this.
I wish they would re release this series with an extended episode 1 inserting the original kite stuff

I honestly think that they don't tell you anything in the beginning, to me it leaves this since of mystery and ambiguity which blends well with Gons childish optimism. It feels like your going on a journey with these people learning about a world they even they themselves know little about. I was also confused by his connection to Kite and the breakdown that Gon had, but I understood it as he just lost the one link that he has to Ging. Kite was the closest hes ever got to meeting Ging and it as taken from him. Not only was that taken, the closest thing his father had to a friend was taken,

The Kite return in the Manga weekly was took months because of breaks in the weekly release. He was more playful with Gon and not as harsh in the anime.
The fight where Kite dies was took a month or so. Kite's loss of his arm saving Gon and Killua was far more significant in Kite's death. Reading the manga as it was released increased the anticipation of events.
The Chimera arch was far more emotional all around. The story of the blind Go champion was fat more depth too. The chiameras butchery of the humans were far more tragic. I think the Show runner intionaly toned down emotional aspects of that series.
I binged the entire chimera ant arc in like three days just because I was desperate to see kite come back (I was certain he would be okay since we didn’t get to see enough of him)... I was absolutely devastated like straight up ugly crying when Pitou says he’s gone. AFTER ALL OF THAT HOPE !!! RIP my heart

I watched the 1999 version first so I knew who Kite was. I agree with what you said in this video Kite was like a big brother figure to Gon and really set a standard for what a hunter should be. Seeing him again was like going through all the trials of the previous arc and getting to show someone you looked up to how far you’ve come. I really wish more people had just watched that first episode of the 1999 version so they would have had that emotional connection during the war with the ants.

i finished watching the chimera ant arc 3 days ago and i felt the exact same way, i was really confused as to why Gon was so out of character (in a sense) when seeking revenge for a character he only briefly knew, to the point of hurting Killua. It makes so much more sense now!

I felt the same when I first watched the 2011 anime. I didn’t understand why Gon felt so attached to kite, who in my eyes, I didn’t even treat as an important character until the show started treating like that later on. I had another friend who started with the 1999 version and he told me what happened. I was very shocked to hear how the first episode went but it made a lot more sense to me. I wish hunter x hunter would’ve added an episode, if not in the first, then maybe during the hunter exams where we see flashbacks of Gon’s time with Kite

Your mention of the parallels between Gon and Kite to Luffy and Shanks also serves as an example of how they SHOULD have done the Kite flashback. In the One Piece manga, the Shanks flashback was in chapter 1, but in the anime it was episode 4. This allowed for them to jump into the action but still have the flashback early enough for it to mean something. They could've had the flashback at some point during the Hunter exam and it would've been perfect.
And they literally had a chance, because Gon mentions Kite every arc in the manga.
I believe the 2011 version cut out Kite's presentation, because they thought it wouldn't be important and it was completely the opposite, by the time they realized it was too late. I agree with the statement that it was a mistake, but I don't agree with two things:
1- Gon's motivation to look for his father. It's true that the explanation of what the heck a hunter is in this world, Gon has literally a whole scene talking to Mito about why he wants to look for Ging. The removing of that scene didn't change or unclear Gon's motivation too much.
2-Gon going into darkness for Kite's death. It's true that it hasn't the same value as if the first scene of the manga with Kite would've happened, but Gon's rage is understandable, since Kite was literally the representation of all the efforts Gon did to find his father, everything lead to the moment where he meet Kite, when Kite died Gon not only lost someone he respected he lost everything he accomplished up til that point.
That logic doesn't follow because the manga was past the Chimera Ant Arc. So Madhouse knew good and well how important he would be

Being someone who has never read the manga but having watched plenty of NewWorldReview, I felt like Kite's absence at the start of the series was easy enough to be handled by my suspension of disbelief. After watching the second half of the video, however, I have realized how much a difference it makes to Gon's eventual fall into grief and the repercussions it has into the story as a whole. This was an absolutely excellent take on the variance between the manga and the 2011 anime adaptation. I want to thank you for your exceptional analysis of this series as it has not only been entertaining but has also brought a new life into this series that I never would have thought to explore otherwise!
