I listened to this on the radio as an 11 year old United fan and remember crying when the commentator said " and he's put it into the back of the......north bank" when Mcclair missed 😂 I had been to the league game weeks previously when he scored the winner at Highbury in a 2.1 win
People talk as if football was born when the Premier League launched in 1992. Arsenal v Man United has always been a big game in English Football, even before the Premier League began.
In away end that day. What a game and great atmosphere. If it happened now VAR would take 10 mins to decide if it was a penalty and then 10 mins to decide if it should be re-taken!
United must have taken 25k that day, with over 5k locked outside who never made it in. This was a pay on the day game for United fans and I remember United officials requesting Arsenal make it all ticket as they anticipated thousands travelling to the game, though Arsenal refused to make it all-ticket, I dont think they anticipated such a large away following which was strange as United's away following was always second to none.
17000 seats. Couldnt get 48.000 on the Terraces then. Walkways more Crush barriers lowered Capacity. 57.000 back then. 20.000 Northbank. 16.000 Clock End. 4.000 side enclosues. 17.000 seats
This game really shows how there was real needle in games back then and even the crowd sounds totally different as in way way way more atmospheric. That’s when football really was a great game. But not anymore.
I went to this an utds end was closed by around 2 an the queue was up Highbury hill with coaches being turned away. The same was happening at the northbank. This game could of had 10 to 20 .000 more easy
All time favourite Arsenal kit, wish we had Adidas again. Over 54.000 in Highbury that's 6,000 less than Emirates. The penalty shot over the goal was the highlight of the game and when Winterburn gave it to McClair
Not a United fan but me and a couple of mates went as neutrals just because it was such a big game. Ended up not getting into the away end - loads were locked out - and watching it from the top of a tower block until the old bill cleared us out. Massive away following that day - only one I'd seen bigger was Newcastle at Spurs in the cup the previous year.
Coming from man utd fan yes i miss those days went true arsenal fans can watch anyway they want and man utd fans like myself watch where we want. Yes like you i miss the good old it fun exciting and at least i got on with you arsenal fans you like us true football fans.
This was the game that started a arsenal man utd feud that lasted two decades Nigel winterburn, and brian maclair at the end of this game, and thats the reason why arsenal and man utd hated each other for nearly 2 decades, not because man utd were rivals, as back in this time man utd were a cup team that were not much good. This game was the reason for arsenal man utd hatred for nearly 2 decades That rivalry was not because of man utd later under fergie, it started here when man utd were rubbish, and because of that penalty at the end of this game, and maclair missed it, and that hatred by maclair that he missed it played out in later years against arsenal. This was an example of arsenal being arsenal because of the north bank, and the highbury stadium Arsenal will never get back what highbury and the north bank meant to them. Hear the noise of the north bank that day, amazing Must be so hard to take a penalty under such pressure in front of probably 12 thousand on the north bank at least that day.
Loved to know what Winterburn said to McClair after he missed his penalty.Just wondering, did they find the ball afterwards?Did it end up at White Hart Lane?10>1.Amen.
+masstransit2 I laughed my hole off when McClair ballooned his penalty way off target, such a hoot!man u/fa=the greatest bunch of thugs/cheats/scumbags that I have ever seen on a football pitch, totally destroyed English soccer and didn't deserve to 'win' any of their league titles and CLs,pure flukey team.10>1.Amen.

Went to this with my Dad..still one of my favourite games.
The clock showing 4.40pm towards the end no doubt a Saturday as well. Nowadays it would be 12.30pm Sunday or 8.00pm on a Monday night.
I was there in Utd end...was gutted when Choccy blazed that over but it was still a good day out
This video show just how special the F.A Cup used to be, fans celebrating that penalty miss as if it was a winning goal.......
Highbury as it was then could easily hold 65,000 never mind 54,000.
early 70s it held up to 63
Shame they tore it down

Fuck you, I think only Dennis Wise has a more slapable face than winterburn.....
mcbrando Fuck off u lowlife
I note you don't disagree about my point about Winterburn....
Hi Raj your wish has come true! Arsenal x Adidas❤️
4.04 - practice run for Michael Thomas ‘charging through the midfield’ a year later ;)
He had a practice in THAT actual game as well - Amen
The roar when he missed the penalty was unreal
I love how Nutty did an in-your-face exchange with McClair. Revenge is sweet!

Nice how some people watch the match for free from the local tower blocks

Still not as what happened in 89 or as funny as Gerrard slipping and losing a 3 goal lead at Palace now is it.

So much forward passing unlike these days all backwards/sideways
Good old Arsenal.
Winterburn at RB.Tell that to the posers playing in the current squad.
