I first heard this song and it reminded me of ax ex whom I screwed things up so bad with and I felt the need to write a poem about our relationship and this song just spurred it all
I know, I'm late af, I just thought It was funny that you mention finding fictional characters to attach the song to because, for me, this song and Mary on a Cross were so impactful that I actually ended up creating 3 characters of my own based entirely around these songs.
It's about a manipulate and abusive relationship. So in an obtuse way, it does relate to the themes of Heart of Darkness, as colonialism was a manipulative and abusive relationship. To me personally, it reminds me of waking up from the mirage called The American Dream.
